Only a story in the making, but my latest character in some cyberpunk game is an ex-military big tough guy (that somehow ended up as the party's moral compass after a truck-of-whores-related incident) who ended up working as additional security for some idol's concert. And I'm strongly considering making him a fan.

With your powers combined:
>Kobolds
>Kobold warriors, scared of bigger creatures but not so scared that they wouldn't charge in to fight in defense of their friends
>Nasty, bitter little creatures with a huge chip on their shoulders, hating the bigger people and carrying a grudge, being kicked around by them all the time, but ultimately mellowing out and becoming a sort-of grumbling semi-reluctant hero type that gets shit done
>Goblins are okay too

My favorite character concept, bar none.

Playing one even now. He draws a lot of enemy attention, but with his armor and shield he's actually really hard to hurt, and hits surprisingly hard for his size. Tends to be easily insulted and easier still to be spooked by undead, dark magic, and other superstitious stuff.

>>
>>53097475
While it is Black an White good/evil, Dio is 100% a sympathetic villain (even though he quickly became a giant asshole). He grew up dirt poor and abused by his alcoholic Dad, and he hates Jonathan, who was born wealthy on easy street.

>Lawful Good Paladin hooks up with Chaotic Neutral Rogue

This was basically the story of my NWN character. Lawful Good paladin of Kelemvor, but he took a couple levels in rogue and was really snarky when he got the opportunity. I didn't sacrifice a bit of Good for it either - he was an all-loving lug with a sharp tongue and while he became a paladin after his hometown got wrecked, he spent his childhood as a total brat, and it showed.

In a sense, an antihero. But without any kind of edge at all. Very spiderman.

Also, hot tiefling sex. Lots and lots and lots of hot tiefling sex, because he never was really a proper paladin with vows.

Had that happen once, guy was just some guard but he started rolling almost nothing but 20's and 19's for about five straight rounds of combat against five seasoned adventurers.

It was to the point where the party didn't even actually kill him. They let him go because of his badassery. Of course, her returned to the BBEG, who offered him a promotion, and now he actually IS a miniboss.

Let me tell you about Altusholt, the best character I ever played from the worst campaign I've ever been in. This guy permanently altered the way I roleplay, for the better.

Altusholt was a Tiefling heavy metal skald who rode around on a motorbike and wielded a fire-spewing Urgrosh that doubled as his guitar. In a campaign set in fantasy medieval Japan.

In hindsight, the fact that the GM approved the concept and let me do this with no strings attached should have been the first warning sign of the shit show that was to come.

This was a 4E game, and the one that convinced me that there was actually something worthwhile in the combat engine. It's also the game that made me swear off 4E forever, because combat was the ONLY thing the DM knew how to do well.

We spent most of the campaign escorting the DM's pet NPC on a plot that was barely explained to us, leaving us no real reason to care. I didn't want to leave the game and knew that I'd have to find my fun somewhere else, so I threw myself into this character. Over the course of the campaign, he went from being a personality-free joke to the group's conscience, voice of reason, and face man. He'd powerslide through a demon's legs and impale it crotch-first on his guitar, then go tend to the wounded and make sure the village was in good shape before moving on. He'd literally melt faces with a solo, then go play with the children and make sure they weren't traumatized by the attack on their town.

As he leveled up, I decided that he wasn't just a musician, he was becoming the very embodiment of the concept of heavy metal. And not only did that allow him to be a healer, it actually required it. The logic was that, as dark and violent and aggressive as metal can be, it exists because it makes people happy. It's an outpouring of passion and energy and cathartic release that brings people together to share in an experience and have an awesome time.
>>
>>53105903

Alt's legacy lives on in pretty much every character I've played since then. I've made a bit of a habit of coming to the table with totally off-the-wall characters that, to new GMs who don't know how I operate, make me look like I'm trying to be the next Henderson or Mr. Welch. And then I roleplay the living shit out of that character, trying to find the humanity in them and really think about how they'd change and grow over the course of the story, how they'd deal with the events of the campaign and the problems they keep running into. I've been a reality-warping steampunk Don Quixote who rode around on a flying carpet with gatling guns on it. I've been a pro wrestler in a giant robot who ended up leading a revolution. I've been a barbarian college professor, a Klingon medic, and a navigator that's basically Gaston in the 41st millennium. And with every single one of them, I've tried to find ways to grow them beyond the joke into a memorable, multidimensional, and genuinely compelling character that people want to have at the table with them.

So here's to the bard. May he shred eternal in the elemental plane of metal.

Sir Bearington was total shit anyway. The fact that /tg/ kept reposting that horrible story is eternal proof that /tg/ has terrible taste, and a lot of trouble telling reality from fiction.

Bearington most likely never happened. And if it did, it was practically a circlejerk, because none of that shit would fly in any way. "Rule of cool" handwaving since the beginning. I mean, bears aren't a fucking player race, are they? Which means the DM needs to be in on it. Which means every "clever" bit of comedy was just the DM saying "I guess this happens" with the manchildren laughing about how funny it is that it's actually a bear.

If I ever encounter anyone in real life who will try to pull a Bearington, I'll never play with them.

I played a game like that, once. They ended up not growing closer at all, with PKing being the leading cause of death for PC's. The only person of the cast to survive was my character, which is surprising, because half of his skills were in piloting, but he was such a psychopathic freak that the rest were afraid to mess with him.

In hindsight, it was a really cringeworthy game at times. But man, it was a lot of fun. The DM really knew how to sell his shitsack of a futuristic space world, and none of us felt any guilt about being completely irredeemable human beings. In fact, some weren't human at all.

But coming out as the scariest dude in a group with space marines, killer androids, a guy possessed by an alien intelligence, a murderous 15 year old etc. when your guy can barely fire a handgun is a kind of twisted badge of honour.

Tell me about it. I somehow made choices that led to me me marrying the Red Wizard companion, and even though her storyline was cool and all (hell, the whole of Mask of the Betrayer was really awesome and epic (heh), especially if you chose the evil ending/playthrough with One-of-Many etc.), I didn't want to do that, especially considering you learn Neeshka is still alive.
It was doubly annoying because the exact same thing happens in Planescape: Torment and I pretty much played them back to back.
I just want muh tiefling rogue romance, fug.

I ran an entire bank robbing campaign with a collection of incompetent criminals, not all of whom were even criminals before the first robbery, not that they told eachother that.

Instead, the players played it out really well, and each of their characters totally bought into eachothers stories because they didn't want to cause reason to start investigating their characters stories too.

It was glorious watching them make excuses for fuckups in character to eachother, "Sun was in my eyes" during a night-time robbery was one of my favorites.

It was basically Shitty RPing Practices: The Game. Kind of a glorious trainwreck. It was a pretty popular game, and the single biggest game on the forum we were playing on in terms of post-count. Especially early on when everyone was stoked, it moved rapidly. So a lot of people wanted in, and there was always a lot or two. One guy tried to get in twice, only to have his character brutally murdered each time. Maybe he thought we were picking on him, but that's really just how the game went. Second time he thought it wouldn't happen because he had a spaceship. One of those irredeemable human beings ended up cutting the hand off his corpse to unluck the ship, and I believe the ship itself ended up crashed or self-destructing.

All the shit you ever heard that ruined a game happened in this one, and somehow only made it more fun. Edgelord rapist character, someone playing the underage girl, the biggest retard of the group playing the captain while no-one actually listens to him (he tried to get us to steal a ship without engines), another edgelord smacking people with a weighted cane, a dude who went "yo, can I play a Space Marine with a demonically possessed hand" and got exactly that, said inept captain coming back with a combat monster after finally getting offed and holding old grudges, the GM actively stoking the fire, constantly adding to his setting with more crazy shit, and pulling shit like demanding "fisticuffs" between two characters because he felt like it. One time when my character was buying some shit off a shady character, the GM basically told me to just shoot the bastard, get the gear and keep my money. Which I did, and he was delighted that I was being a skeezy motherfucker, describing how I blew a chunk the size of your head out of the guy's shoulder with my hand cannon.

We were total That Guys, every one of us, all of the time, and it's still one of the most hilarious rides I've ever been on.

Well, originally it was just my brother who started the trend. He was a fuckup of a criminal, but he panicked a bit when he was tapped for a bank robbery, so he made himself sound hard as fuck despite never having even fired a real gun. The other characters follow suit and make like this is totally going to be a standard gig for them, despite one literally only doing this from a mid-life crisis.

They actually started playing off of movie tropes because that was the only experience they had, including a full standup on the spot performance of the speech from Heat, moments before one of them shot out a window trying to intimidate someone, sounding the alarm and alerting the patrol at the diner across the street.

I think there are a few things that made it work for us: First off, the highly lethal nature fostered a sort of social Darwinism where characters couldn't be too stupid, or they'd end up removed from the board within the first few posts. Even Possessed Hand Guy barely lashed out at the crew, and mostly just murdered NPC's in secluded spots to boost his power level. Being dumb got you dead, either way.

A lot of us were also bro's on the forum, so there was no real resentment outside of the game, except maybe on the part of the guy who got killed after entering twice, and the dumb captain dude.

Lastly, most people knew to not take shit too far. For instance, the GM occasionally did that "lolrandom" kind of stuff. But he wasn't going to demand some inane roll to breathe or whatever at the drop of a hat. One of the times he did it was when a min-maxed space marine was looting some random person's house (we were shit criminals, really) and the GM went "lol you're so stupid, roll to put on socks". Naturally, he failed, and put a sock on his dick. But yeah, the character was astoundingly stupid, by the rules and in play, so it worked. It's a harmless roll, too. For us, that just added to the flavour, we had a good laugh, and ribbed the guy for being too retarded to put on socks. Until he was inevitably killed.

Ah well, sorry for filling your ear with this. It's been a while since I even thought about this game. It's one of the first proper RPG's I played, really. I don't usually talk a lot about it, because somehow "we all played That Guys, and mine was the sociopathic rapist and pedophile" never sounds good.

The GM had done a Fantasy/Medieval game before this, by the books, where I also played a normal non-rapist dude. So I guess most of us were aware that it was more of a letting-off-steam game. Dude was a good GM. Which is impressive, given most of us were still in high school at the time.

I did that in a campaign. I had an old man NPC recruit each of the PC's into the party, telling each of them separately in and out of game that they were the "Chosen One", but this was a dangerous fact and they should never reveal it is them.

None of the players knew I did this for ALL of them.

At their first gathering, the Old Man said something along the lines of "This group travels with the Chosen One. Each of you is tasked with protecting one another, and the Chosen will reveal their self when it is time for their destiny to be fulfilled".

I had it laid out that the Chosen one couldn't be right out killed without someone knowing who they were and using a specific method. This led to an entire party of heroes willing to protect each other sometimes doing crazy shit a character wouldn't normally do, but each of his bro's running in behind him because they all think the worst thing that can happen is they can be knocked out. I had to be creative in saving a couple of them once or twice, but it was the most action oriented and risk taking group I had ever played.

In the end I had them meet the Old Man at a wellspring type setting and declared the Chosen One must now step forward, cut his hand, and a single drop of his blood would fuel the Wellspring and protect the nation for another hundred years.

Almost exactly all four of my players grabbed their character piece and put it next to the wellspring and then all looked around confused.

The old man explained the "Chosen One" need only be a brave soul who protected others, and the more of this type of being gave blood to the ritual the more powerful it became in protecting the kingdom. The Old Man had convinced each of them they were Chosen so they would ultimately be what the ritual needed at the end, but prior were just ordinary men.

Was a fun end to the game and the group went on two more adventures before we had to disband.

I still think the character idea is a bit cheesy, though.

Yuck. Mary Sue's have ruined the "comes from a hated race trope "
>>
>>53128593
Drizzt doesn't even count because he was somehow a good guy from the start: if you ask me, that's what makes him a Mary Sue.

If the character was precisely as villainous as all others, only to turn around after a long personal story arc, then it'd work much better and have no inherent Sueness at all.

you're almost describing Dwarves Grudge Bearers but kobolds.

I'm fucking hard how about you?

can our begrudging hero ride one of these?
>>
>>53097297
This, honestly
Also, sometimes the story isn't so muddy and depressing, but there's another issue.
When the antagonist gets too understandable or relatable, you fragilize your players' motivation for dealing with him since they can no longer rely on "I hate this bastard".
Worse, sometimes parts of your groups will get into long heated debates with other parts of your group about whether the guy is justified or not, or whether it's worth trying diplomacy or not, or whether he can be redeemed or not. God! I know this is a matter of taste, but to me, what a waste of time!

Magnificent Bastard good guys. Guys where you think they might just be heartless assholes but they never actually turn out to be.

Heroic rookies

Any hero that with an angry will, stubborn defiance, & will sacrifice himself for the world, even if it isn't one that was kind to him.

Tavi (Gaius Octavius) from Codex Alera. Favorite character ever.
>>
>>53128665
This is a really strong point because it applies to almost all cases of Mary Sue characters. Just be less lazy with the writing and establish their unique traits as part of their background with decent justification.

You can remedy that weird power gap by just explaining how or why a character gained that advantage or unique trait and it becomes a method of character development rather than wish fulfillment. It's kind of insulting to the reader to show them a character and expect them to think he's cool without asking questions.

Not quite the same but this reminded me of a character I once played. It was a svirfneblin rogue who's best friend was an ogre. The ogre was scarier but my rogue was the more dangerous of the two. The ogre would hold enemies still while the gnome backstabbed them. Good times.
