Budget Wargaming Terrain

So I want to make some Terrainpieces for my wargaming group (since they are all dumb as shit, still being busy building their huge ass army because of course you should spend 400+ Bucks at once just to play 1000 points anyways because thats all they build so far)
I dont have the kinda money to buy all these fancy terrain models (eventhough I like what GW and other shops have) so I will make my own.
Thing is, there are a lot of templates out there, right?
Some free, some paid.
Can someone recommend me some good free once or share some paid once?
Like, /tg/ literally shares tons of books and stuff that cost money every day so...

Spaniard? also what terrain are you after and how much are you willing to spend?
>>
>>53075256
>Spaniard
Dont know what that is.
We play 40k and I in particular have an interest of getting the guys into Shadow War, so some Imperial and Industial (specially Industrial) Setpieces would be cool.
In terms of money, I don't have much. I basically was looking for a way of making most out of cheap craftmaterials and/or papershit I already have available

Pringle cans silos, cardboard mouldings, fruit cup huts, bendy straw pipes, lightbulb-paper sheet metal. You can make literal trash look good with a half-decent paint job.

These are pretty neat. Simple and functional terrain. They are tall enough for infantry to hide behind them completely and they provide good shooting position on top. Easy to make and can't get any cheaper than cardboard.

Its got some good advice, normally the 40k general has links.

In general most recyclable household waste is good for making terrain from. Only real cost is time, glue and paint.

I don't know if it's really that cheap but I use modular panel based terrain (like GW's or Pegasus Game's) and stretch the panels with bits of textured plasticard with currigated/slat/stamping textures.

I'm going to base them on squares and make a modular industrial ruins board. I'm not going to have a main board with ground texture, just the bases of the terrain touching. Might be cool dunno.

yes.
Just don't use superglue or aresol driven things like spray paint.

If you Do want to use superglue on it then prime it with a few coats of Gesso to act as a barrier between the foam and the glue.

Nice man, I got one of these when they were common in UK Poundshops so I have plenty of greebles. Now you only seem to get them for like £8+postage from dodgy Russian ebayers, I think the original company is Tehnolog and Airfix licensed some of it as "Robogear".

I've just realised I gave away all my transfer sheets to some random guy on a FB trade group. The IG tank ones could have been useful I'm realising.

It's cheap and you can build whatever you need from it. You can also paint it. In fact you need to paint it.

>You can also paint it. In fact you need to paint it.

But if you're going to use any kind of spray on it, you have to base-coat it first or the spray can melt the foam.

depends on the foam. Some stuff I've used, had a plastic coating on it and I was able to spray it.

This kinda terrain could work for some xenos shit, like eldar exodites or maybe just very old eldar ruins or even ruins of some other, more primitive civilization
>>
So I recently started painting up some Mantic Deadzone terrain, my plan was to salt mask it but that hasn't worked. No matter what I do I just can't get the technique to work, I dunno if it's the paint I'm using or what but I'm abandoning that idea as it's driving me fucking mad.

Anyway the long and short of it is I have about 4'x4' worth of terrain thats been painted a rusted brown and I don't know what to do with it. I really don't want to just paint over it and I sure as shit don't want to strip it and start again, at the same time I don't want it to just be rusty brown either.

Any of you lads have idea how I can salvage it or am I completely fucked?

I was wondering if I could make sponge stippling work in reverse, you usually stipple on the rust the main colour, what I'd be doing would be the opposite. I guess I'll just have to try it and see.

Foamcore. Cardboard. Chipboard. MDF. Really any rigid material could be used as a base, and you're most likely going to be covering it up anyway so it really doesn't matter.

Pic makes it look a bit lighter than it is in person but it's pretty much all like this at this point.

The failed salt masked stuff has already been stripped so no pics of that. It was just some crates so all the buildings are just primed brown like this.

Are you trying to get a pattern where you put down a first color, then a protective pattern (the salt), and finally a 2nd color - then remove the protective material and reveal the 1st (base) color? If so, put down the first color, and then stipple on pic related with a natural sponge. Once this stuff is dry, it'll be easy to rub off and reveal the under coat easily.

As for your current brown buildings, you could put a few washes and highlights on them as well as streaks of rust and they'd be table top quality pretty easily.

Damn this are nice. It makes me sad that White Dwarf went from having all these awesome terrain tutorials to just being an advertisement for overpriced premade terrain.

Look at Wyrd Chronicles. It has lots of really good terrain tutorials.

If you aren't averse to buying premade terrain, there are lots of really cheap MDF terrain manufacturers on Ebay (The GBP being so low helps) and Andrea castings can be nice. I personally like TT Combat because of their good price to quality ratio, but they aren't quite as cheap as the Ebay guys. Also look out for people dumping Pegasus Hobbies gothic buildings on Ebay. Good hard plastic stuff that everyone and their uncle uses for 40K.

Look at real objects, and think what smaller things can be that shape. For example, the round tank in the OP pic? Cheap ball. Cover it in paint, add bits to it, stick it to a base.
Silo? Pringles can.
Foamboard covers a lot of shapes, and it's fairly cheap and beefy.

It's all toilet paper tubes and cardboard. Took about a night to throw together ten pieces with some Elmer's Glue. Even the ladders are pretty quick to make with some balsa wood. The flat grey covers ok and then black ladders contrast well. I would like to drybrush this stuff a little but it's not a big deal.

Let me say again how easy this shit was to build. And if you live with women they use a lot of toilet paper. Materials accumulate quickly.

I use the thin wooden coffee stirrers to make floorboards for my bases - works nicely.

And fuck building terrain out of it - I'd need to do four times as much measuring and cutting.

You can make stuff literally out of trash with a good imagination. Made this a day ago.

Take a trip around local trash dumps and look around the house. You'll find stuff you can use.
>>
I love thread.
>>
>>53094278
That's the easy part - print out your designs FIRST, score / pre-fold as needed, and then measure the size of foam parts you need to cut. A sharp utility knife or X-acto knife, a ruler, and a steady hand are all you need.
>>
>>53096034
Heh! Hive World VHS! I've seen people take them apart and use the flat plastic surfaces as wall detail by gluing them to cardboard or foam surfaces, along with the interior bits as roof-top details.
>>
>>53080042
The flipside is that it looks harder than it is.
>>53078614
It is more difficult but not quite as much. Literally just glue something to a cardboard base to use then paint it. Run on instinct and don't second guess yourself. The most valuable part is the paint really but the paint job can make darn near anything work.

Once you've done it once you will see what worked, what didn't, and you won't be daunted to try again. Also you will have a piece of terrain.

Then again, I'm a jackwagon who needs to get off his ass and make warmachine terrain. Stupid industrial era ass specificity. 40K was easier. Literally ANYTHING goes in that setting, and that made terrain easier for me.
>>
>>53098384
>The most valuable part is the paint really but the paint job can make darn near anything work.

The nice thing about paint for terrain, especially buildings, is that you can do it with a solid color + drybrushing, then pick out little details. You actually don't want to over-paint, because then it'll be too much of a distraction on the table. It should be good background that you can pick out your minis against.

I recently made the grass mat seen here. Components to make it were a sheet of teddy bear fur, some cheap craft paint (get the more fluid type rather than push out of tube stuff) light green and yellow paint (and a little bit of extra brown in places) a comb and scissors. After trimming the fur to get the overall length more appropriate, washed it, then after drying, lightly brush a mix of the two paints on them comb it through. Work in small sections. Do any additional trimming as you go, and you will probably want to go over sections more than once.
>>
>>53099467
So, did you essentially dye it, or did you paint it using acrylic paints? If you used acrylic I would imagine that the fibers are stiff / stuck together when it dries?

> Grass mat
I never understood that. It stains, it's uneven and tips models over, and it's got to be dyed and nailed down.
Why not just give the baseboard a coat of green paint and leave it at that?
>>
>>53099527
Nope, not dyed, painted. As I wrote: lightly brush paint on, comb it through.
Fibres are fine and flexible because it's only a small amount of paint and combed in so they don't clump.

>>53099786
>Why not just give the baseboard a coat of green paint and leave it at that?

Because I wanted a nice grass mat? Also it doesn't stain because it's acrylic paint. The optimal method is to use an airbrush but, well, that requires owning an airbrush. No use of dye. Also why nail it down? It's a sheet, you can just roll/fold it up when you don't need it.
As for models tipping over: not a concern. Trimming down the fur helps a lot with that and I don't play anything with plastic models on plastic bases which are prone to tipping over.

I suspect it's the paucity of game stores per square mile relative to gamers, or some such similar metric.
Certainly there are pic logs of American tournaments out there that I'd be embarrassed to have in the public domain if I were the organiser, but there's also often a far smaller 'local' population of gamers to generate or demand much terrain in small-town America.

If your game store commonly has no more than ten concurrent occupants including staff, hosting a thirty-person state championship or something is naturally going to stretch your terrain stock to the very limits.

Dont have a picture of mine, but you can make some pretty neat leaking biohazard/nuclear waste towers for cheap.

Take some empty coke cans and get some air drying clay, hot glue, and sand. With your hobby knife (or an old one, the aluminum can dull your blade), cut a little slit by the upper rim, just enough for the can to be able to tilt if you want the towers to tile. Straight towers work too.

Remove the tab and stick the can upside down. Bunch up some air dry clay to build a base and give the can support to stand. Bond the two pieces together underneath with hot glue/super glue to make the base level and secure. Put a small bit of clay to glaze the dome in the top of the can. Just enough to level it out.

Now you can give it dimples and pockets while it dries, adding in some dripping lines down the side/spilling out over the sides and top. This is the leaking waste.

Cover the clay on the base with sand/ballast/any terrain junk you want.

Paint the base like earth, spray the can biohazard yellow, add some drybrushing of steel and yellow for damage, and make the leaking ooze a nuclear green/purple/whatever, and give it a coat of 'ardcoat or any gloss varnish for effect. Or leave it flat and use an airbrush for some glowing effects.

My tyranid creep and terrain tutorial is up next. A little more involved, but still pretty cheap.

May take a post or two, but here's my tyranid creep and terrain.

Objective markers are done the same way, but the glowing crystals are just bunches of straight sprue glued together and cut at angles. Works remarkably well.

Base of the ruins is a 1x1 piece of cheap mdf board. Ruins themselves are just foam poster board from Wal-Mart. Cut to the shape you want, then with a hobby knife distress the foam inside so it looks like its crumbling. Added some coarse and fine sand to a can of black primed I had in my garage and textured it up. Alternative is to glue corkboard to the foam/poster board to get a great stone texture.

Get a can of spray insulation foam from a hardware store. I used some brand, can't remember, but it had a red can with a yellow cap. A little goes a long way with this stuff, it really expands. Insert your crystals midway through the hardening process. Too soon and they'll be forced out, too late and the goop will be too rubbery to break. Or you can try starting a hole when it dries with a small drill bit.

Once it dries, cover it with hot glue to make it goopy. Add tendrils, droops, and all sorts of freaky shit here. I ran through countless glue sticks for this, I really had a ball.

Drybrush it up like your favorite goopy or sticky flesh and 'ardcoat the goop. Makes it look slimy when done right.

You can use this method to make spore mines, mucolids, and other crap too out of plastic golf balls and fake grapes.

I like the expanding foam insulation. A lot of it is by 3M. You can go in later with green stuff to make more fine veins on stuff if you so desire. The hot glue is a bit more difficult to control.

food and water-based paint is not a good idea
prepare for getting rotting bases in a few weeks
>>
>>53122080
I'll take "What is varnish / sealer?" for $1000 Alex Trebeck. Hell, even sealing the pasta with PVA glue before painting would likely do the trick. I've seen Shellacked bread loaves used as center pieces and they lasted for years.

(Not to mention that the terrain in question isn't actually made of pasta.)

Interesting. I assume those roads are 6" in length--smart. Solves the issue I was having with vehicles easily.

Thanks a ton, Anon.
>>
>>53123548
Yeah, the roads are probably 6" wide and 12" long if their standard terrain tiles are 12" x 12". That would make it very simple to lay out different setups and still have everything line up correctly.

not anymore. most places and people recycle their plastic filament now.

runishinrubishout is another good youtube channel for terrain.

he has a guide for making mass amounts of flock cheap from sawdust and paint.

cheap and easy walls for zone mortalis.

Bags of cheap foam bricks are easy to come by, use ebay if you're really not sure where to get any.

Cakeboard is an amazing hard and durable base for light terrain.

Pic related is an early attempt at a ruined building. I later cleaned up the PVA and when it dried it dried cleanly with no dollops of glue anywhere. After, I put a couple of light PVA coats over it for protection, and it's ready to be sprayed now.

Speaking of DIY wargaming terrain - what are other generic pieces would you reccomend to do?

You know, the ones that are damn easy to do and can be used in every game?

I'm thinking like the:
> crates
> styrofom fences
> wooden stick fences
> ruins of any kind

I would put othe obvious trees on the list but IMHO they are not an easy piece of terrain if we want them to look half way decent.

>they are not an easy piece of terrain if we want them to look half way decent.

But they can be. https://youtu.be/ntmEP46g40Q

Also:

Hills
Linear obstacles such as hedges and embankments
Plantlife areas such as flower beds, bushes, crops
Roads (should always have roads)
Craters (if appropriate)

>>53131782
Corrugated plasticard, cut to about credit card size and paint metalic to make rough fences.

Can also be used to make shanties and patch up more intact buildings

Its probably better for smaller scales like 6 or 15mm, but I really like it because it blends really easily, so you can easily match your terrain to whatever mat you're using, and its durable as fuck, you can also get much thicker coverage with it than you can with static grass.
