Point-buy is generally much harder to do but it offers much more complex mechanics, especially when you go with universal point-buy across the whole CYOA. Things get exponentially harder to balance that way, though.

Go with the amount of work effort you're willing to invest. I find that point-buy CYOAs in general, when done well, receive a lot of responses and are favourably-received.

Stats and resource management is fucking fun and I believe is necessary for something technical like a Transformers CYOA. Especially if there's going to be a lot of customization options.

Ultimately, it comes down to the dedication of the author, but I'm saddened by the lack of CYOAs with engaging resource management potential. It's why I'm going all out with Apocalypse. Don't care if the majority of people don't like it.

I feel like not all of these choices are completely equal. Sea Monster loses intelligence, Giants too but at least they can regain it, Guardian gets to sit on some treasure pile for next millennium. It's like being a dragon except without the cool parts of being a dragon.

Incidentally, I would dragon. For the perk, the artifact. Not going to conquer the world tho, because the problem with conquering something is that afterwards you are expected to rule it and I really can't be arsed to do that.
Instead I'll flood my lair with golems, Doors will be golems. Walls will be golems. Floors will be golems. There will be golems made from smaller golems.

This way if I get bored, I can leave my hoard safely behind and wander around and if someone out there has something that I want, I can send my golem army to seize it.

That depends on how it's done. You can have a shared resource but you have to have very good justification with why the player would want to spend on both. Do it wrong and everyone will spend all their points on the more appealing option, which is usually in favour of items than companions.

Battlemage had this problem when you used the same resources to spend on companions and mounts. Many people spent all their points on the most expensive mounts and never took companions. It wasn't a good balance. That's why they're separated resources in the current version.

Star Dust is kind of different because people are obligated to take crew members for their ship. Even though there's no real functional aspect to companions beyond module requirements (pilot for a second ship, gunner for guns, etc), people often load up on crew anyways because of the context of companions in this case. Flying an empty ship sounds boring to most people.

Shared resources are not easy to do and there aren't many CYOAs that do this.

This is my /pol/ build.

With this build I have zero intention of fighting any other magical girls. If attacked, I would just escape. I have S rank agility that will allow me to fly incredibly fast. With C rank warp I can spam teleport as well, which will let me go even faster. With A rank mind, S rank mana reserves, and the ability to pause time to think carefully about the next spot I am going to teleport to I can spam teleport incredibly fast and seemingly without limit.

If I do sustain damage, I have S rank defense combined with B rank life magic that I can use to heal myself.

Blood magic would ensure that I live a comfy life - for example if I need money I could simply command a rich person to give me money or command others to deliver goods to me.

Blood can be used offensively if needed. I could command people to kill themselves or turn people into assassins. This would be an incredible weapon against the ruling elite. If for some reason I could not approach the ruling elite myself, I could turn their own servants into assassins.

Swapping from blood to astra will allow me to go full /pol/ on large populations of people that I do not like.

Astra also allows me to reduce the mana cost of my spells so I can make my seemingly unlimited mana reserves last that much longer.

Pip & Pop would be tools that I use to thoroughly scout areas before I attack them.

The Disguised, due to their scattered nature, should offer you plenty of disparate opportunities and connections.
