I have been thinking of running a DnD starter set with my friends. None of us has any experience in tabletop roleplaying, and I have never DM'ed anything. Is this a legit thing to get started with?

Yeah, but it's very pick up and play. Players pick from a selection of pre-built characters and that might rub some the wrong way.
The adventure's not bad, but you should read it all the way through before running so you can keep consistent.

Any chances I could work away the pre-built chars? For example, keep the classes and stats the same, but let players do their own character and aligments?

It's perfectly fine to run it with your own characters. Only "issue" is thinking of plot hooks as to why your characters are doing the job. Default can just be "They're looking for work" but it's a bit boring. Gives your players some encouragement to think up story, though.

yes, that was the whole purpose of this set.
I ran it for beginners and they all loved it

How about I let the players work their own backstories for their characters, but the bottom line is they are all part of some Adventurer Guild that landed this job. Its up to them how they ended up there, and it would also help the characters to be familiar with each other.
Now, since its a ok campaign to run, any pro tips on how to be a good dungeon master?
I plan it so that it would be fun for everyone, but I also wanna stress that the possibility of dying is real, and how should I handle death of a PC?

Specifically for this adventure, plan ahead. If you run combat well and make use of the goblin's bonus action to disengage/hide, you can easily kill someone at level 1. When you first get to town, there's just a list of possible npcs and side quests dropped on you. I suggest picking one or two at a time for each time the party visits the inn. Past that, the rest of the adventure works pretty nicely, though the main villains seem pretty weak. You should be able to hype them up through npcs spreading rumors, though.
As far as death of a PC, iirc any of the factions that they can join should offer one free revive, and there's a few opportunities to join them through npcs if the players don't want to join one during character creation.

Think of the first few levels as a character's origin story

Thanks for all the tips. But I have to admit, I will not be actively trying to kill the PC's. I am the Dungeon Master, not the Antagonist, this aint the Labyrinth. I will try to avoid killing their characters, and give them fair fights, but if they do indeed fuck up, death is not avoidable.
