He wouldn't even be doing that. When surcoats become popular in the early 13th century, they were one-color garments (rarely banded or halved) in a few stock colors (usually red or blue) and if the wearer did have heraldry on his shield or his mount's caparison the surcoat would always contrast that. So Philip would most likely be rocking a red or maybe green surcoat. However by the 14th century heraldry was applied to surcoats so the OP image is good on that front.

Aside from and the artist going a bit overboard with the strap/belt studs the rest of the image the most autistic scrutiny (including some nice details that are often overlooked) if we assume it represents the last 15 years or so of his life.

What made the helmets become like that? Was it firearms or what? Isn't it too early for mass produced firearms?

From what my fencing teacher told me about them, it was pikes. Apparently that's a good shape for your common pikeman in a block if someone slips (or dies) and drops a pike on your head.

I heard the crest would deflect stones and other things being dropped on your head, useful if climbing up a siege ladder or being pelted by stones from the walls.

I would really appreciate similar types of art for non-european, or at least not ancient greece/rome/medieval/renaissaince costumes and equipment. Shit like this for Chinese, Indian, Middle-Eastern, South/Mezo American, Scythian, Cretian, Mezopotamian cultures would be amazing.

I'm working on world-building that is fairly anachronistic settings most heavily inspired by cultures and environments of Central Asia and Middle East, but with some Byzantine, Ancient Mezopotamian and South American influences, and coming across good reference materials is a bitch.

Much appreciated. Seriously, thanks for taking the time off to post this stuff.

>>53027897
Yeah.
I tend to draw inspiration from existing fiction inspired by the subject matter (Central Asia seems to be a surprisingly popular subject matter in Manga, oddly enough), but the reality is that fiction is never stranger or more interesting than the real world, and classic or didactic art is generally much more inspiring than stuff produced for genre fiction.
So I'm always grateful for any either historical reconstructions, photos, or works of classic art that display more oriental and exotic cultures.

Does not even have to be war-oriented. Anything displaying humans, costumes, places to live in, every day situations: I love all that shit.

Not that I'm complaining or anything, but did Assyrians really ride horseback, with saddle or saddle-like equipment?
I might be entirely and utterly wrong here, but I thought that stuff was only popularized by Scythians and really gained a place in warfare around 400 B.C.-ish, and that before, war-chariots were used almost exclusively.

I've got the book open and according to Osprey:

"Cavalry first served in the Assyrian army under Tukulti-Ninurta III. Those illustrated date from the reign of Ashurnasirpal, and show the cavalry still employed the 'donkey seat' when riding the horse. Tactical employment of this period shows how, by riding in pairs, they were envisaged as 'charioteers without their chariot.'

Hope this helps.

I already did take a few looks, but my research has not been in any way exhaustive. This as well as quite a lot of anthropological photography and first-half-of-20th century traveler journals and photocollections helped me a lot in modeling my ideas for at least some of the cultures and their appearances.

Once again, thanks for all the materials and suggestions, though.

>. People are too afraid to show new/unknown stuff.
I honestly think the problem is not in the fact that they are afraid of visiting unknown stuff, as being the problem of encycled genre clichés, which is to say: a lot of fantasy is based on existing fantasy and fantasy art, and not enough is actually trying to drive inspiration from the original, real world stuff (history, mythology, art, folklore) where fantasy started. I remember how the TW games made everybody shit their pants, despite it being as generic european medieval fantasy as it gets, simply by the virtue of TW artists actually researching actual historical costumes, architecture, as well as reading folklore stories, fairytales, myths and classic literature for inspiration.

Fantasy works best when its a reflection/re-interpretation of reality. The more it becomes a thing sui generis, the more fantasy is fueled by other fantasy, the more generic, impersonal and eventually dull it becomes, I belive.
It's also true that we tend to ignore amazing stuff like Middle-Eastern or Asian and Indian sources. But honestly, its hard for me to find even medieval-europe-tolkien-based fantasy that would be actually interesting.

Tolkien himself did so great because he worked with old Scandinavian and Germanic mythology, history and folklore. His stuff was rooted in the complexity and variety of real world. Miyazaki, who sadly did not do enough fantasy world-building, did something very similar with Mongolian, Tibetian and central Asian cultures and legacy.

When you start making fantasy based on other fantasy works which are based on something that is based on Tolkien, its where things start to fall apart.

There are a number of things which all taken together make for a pretty bad representation of what a Varangian guardsman would have looked like. The other Vang images also contain flaws, some pretty major (>>53028947 is just a barrage of wrong) but I chose this one as one of the worst. I only brought it up since it didn't seem fair that the BOTN guy was singled out for inaccuracy, as I'm sure no one wants an entire thread of me yelling that "your art is bad and you should feel bad".

In no particular order:
Helmet is plain fantasy, like a mash-up between a spectacle and Great Polish helmet. The seperate coif/aventail thing is also anachronistic.

Lamellar over mail: no evidence that the V. ever used it at all, least of all in combo with mail.

Sword in back-scabbard: utter fantasy. Handle is too long although that is perhaps a nitpick too far. Pommel looks to be a Type N which is mid 9thC compared to the sorta late 10th/early 11thC feel of the rest of the kit.

Shield: Ideally the rim would be sewn but there is a weak argument for nails instead. Those mushroom sized things are way too big and too few compared to historical shields even if pretend they are meant to be nails.

I have no clue what is going on with the hilt and sheath of the knife on the belt. It might be some Rus thing I've never seen but considering everything else I suspect not.

The axehead at least is a good depiction of a period type, although it's a dane-axe rather than a single-handed weapon which is implied by both the pose and short haft.

The leather vambrace is made up. As is the shiny golden dragon strapend, which is way too big anyway.

Finally I don't know where the stripy trouser thing came from, but I've never seen any evidence for it.

Some of those things may seem minor, but it's the sum total that makes it less than ideal.

Ok, if you really want me to. I really, really like vikings and knights- I have an interest in other periods and cultures but those are ones of I can quote the finds reports backwards. All that means is I can call out BS with confidence whereas I have no way of knowing if a Sassanid cataphract drawing is accurate despite how cool I think that period is. Vikings and especially Varangians are particularly prone to BS depictions so at some point I'm going to have to shut up or I'll be here all night.

I'd also like to know more about this Rus knife, as it doesn't really resemble anything found in the North Sea area.

I'm working off the assumption that as with most of the historical guard, these are Scandinavians rather than Rus (of which I know some but less detail). If something is actually Rus fashion that slipped me by then stop me as then I won't be wasting peoples time the next this image is posted.

3:Our standard bearer has a nice long-shafted handed axe, with which he needs two hands presumably keeping the standard aloft with a prehensile tail. That axehead in way resembling any remotely contemporary dane-axe, especially with the reverse pick.

The Type M sword is only 50 years out of date in 1020 so we will let that slide. The knife and sheath are both setting off alarm bells though my book on Byzantine swords (to cross-check the hilt on 1) is in the attic. Thursting the blade through the Birka-style pouch is just fucking stupid.

Helmet is an ok but not great spangenhelm but the aventail is wrong on two counts. Firstly the profile is that of a 14thC bascinet's aventail rather than a curtain only extending to the ears and not below the jawline. Second is that it is entirely latten/copper, where it was used goldy rings were a decorative trim only one or two rings deep.

Mail is good, the bright orange "Varangian Bra" is less good. Osprey cites a singe description which is not terribly conclusive although I hae been unable to trace the original. There is no evidence of the Varangians using splinted arm or leg protection.

Big poofy sleeves are totally wrong (shout if this is a secret Rus thing). The classic Viking baggy trousers have gone out of fashion by the 11thC.

Awesome. That's dedication to the bit.

Is there any point continuing with the exploration of costume inaccuracies or are we about done with pretense of discussion?
>>

WEW! holy shit lad you are right sad
>>

Better than exploring biology inaccuracies.

Still about 90 posts away from autosage, might as well fill up the thread to make it archive

There's been a complaint. Last round was 22 vs 21 in Ukraine's favor. It could be a failure of the referees, communication, purposeful, etc.

Fucking sad, because Russia was winded, and Ukraine clearly won in round 2.
>>
>>53032265
Christ, that's incompetent on the ref and marshall's parts. Russia definitely could have made up for that extra too, which I mean fuck, 22 v 22 would be fun as fuck to watch.

2: More bloody lamellar, even more because this is an Akolouthos (commander) so if any single V. could be in mail (instead of all of them) it should be him. The helm is clearly meant to be a gjermundbu spectacle helm but the eyes are 4 or 5 times the size they should be. Also more over-sized aventails and the white linen coif is a late 12thC fashion.

That axe is a decorated version of a period Wheeler Type II. Shame it's a carpenter's axe rather than a weapon. Shockingly the Type S sword is actually mostly correct except the fact that it is tiny.

I have no clue what is going on with the blue shoe coverings, the patterned trousers or the seriously snazzy cloak but am prepared to defer to a passing Byantine costume historian. I am very sceptical though.

Both 2 and 3's shield are the right shapes but are a pretty cartoony vision of gem-encrusted gear (gold-decorated swords very much yes, shields wit rubies the size of your eyeball not so much). Animal designs are really a thing yet, most have crosses or spirals etc.

1: Bolli's dress does mostly match his description in his saga which is nice. As with the dagger on 3, I'm pretty sure the hilt is wrong by a few centuries. Even if not, he'd be more likely to have a Frankish/Scandi-style sword (even the Byzants tended to use imitations thereof). Scabbards also tended to be plain and suspended on a seperate belt to the one holding the tunic up.

The green knotted cloth seems pretty random with no basis. Same as 3 flouncy trousers are out, especially in that crazy patterned fabric. I again have no clue about those white gaiters. Shield design is accurate to the saga, but that was written centuries later and conflicts with contemporary shield art trends in available sources so I suspect it was a later addition to the story.

It's not like everything is wrong, but you do have to go looking for the accurate stuff.

>>53032541
yeah but i bet you cant draw worth a shit and guess which guy gets picked to do a book like this
>>
>>53032541
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that, fampai. I don't even remember where I found those images, but I'll keep them anyways, I use them for inspiration for fantasy afterall
>>
>>53032872
Not him but I can draw and all I got for it was severe depression every time I open the drawthread to find a trove of mediocrity and no cool knights or warriors with lots of interesting armor and clothing.
>>
>>53028228
How do you kill something so big?
>>
>>53032984
*requests, the word requests should have been in there somewhere.

Because I used to take a lot of those
>>
>>53032950
It's from the Osprey Varangian Guard book. About half of the rest of the images in the thread are Osprey scans from one issue or another. /hwg/ has links to a mega full of them in the OP. As history they are decidely mixed and the drawings are especially bad (even the writers have admitted that the artists have a loose connection to reality) but they are good forstealing costume ideas.

>>53032872
>>53032984
I am him, and you are right my doodling skills don't quite cut it.

Other anon, if you want to draw knights draw frickin knights and don't let shitty threads get you down. There are plenty of places to learn about the kit, and you can constantly improve as you learn more.

From one anon to another if we had a similar thread and someone said "I drew pic related, it's meant to be X, how can I improve" then I and others would post images/links and suggestions.

>>53029022
Women in armor are in both Warhammer and Dark Souls, dweeb.
>>
>>53033569
Well obviously since they're fantasy.
>>
>>53029765
>LIGHT cavalryman

Okey then.
>>
>>53033746
Light is a relative term and primarily denotes role rather the amount of armour in absolute terms. In 15thC terms a horsemen in full armour but on a smaller, unbarded mount was indeed light cavalry.

Things get screwy when you compare across cultures and eras. That Italian light cavalryman is wearing more armour than a Norman knight but also an 18thC cuirassier (breastplate and helmet and other types of heavy cav would not even wear that).

Nigger you don't even understand logic.

Which, you know, you believe in ladyknights so it kinda makes sense that you're completely stupid.

But your mom licks my asshole clean for me.
>>
>>53036744
You don't understand jack shit you stupid faggot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Hatchet. Women did fight on the battlefield sure it was not common but it did happen.

You need to open you eyes when you are getting you smelly ass cleaned so you would see that it's your dad doing a shitty job.
>>
>>53036859
Watching you white knight for ladyknights just proves how nonexistent they are. Ceremonial at best.

Maybe if you had a dad you wouldn't be this pathetic.

You're too autistic to process actual human emotion, don't try to fake it.
>>

And?

Nope, you have not shown that women fighting is fantasy in anyway, you have jack shit for proof. A Wikipedia link is way more than what you have or will ever have.

except it says that the order is ceremonial
>>
>>53037123
If you read all of it you would see that they got the order by defending the city.
>>
>>53037160
The city which already had a guard and wasn't assaulted regularly.

Which makes them the participation trophy of knightly orders.

Ergo ceremonial.

You didn't fucking read it.

They are not physically there but spiritually. They don´t directly intervene in the battle but influence the minds of the people that are taking part.
