>Story begins with another planeswalker staying on Ravnica to lead an uprising against the guilds. To do this, she constructs an army of angels. But the first and strongest of the angels finds out some pretty bad shit about the resistance. Driven to the brink at one bitter revelation too many, she ends up killing her own creator by consuming her soul, gaining her spark in the process.

Good flake idea or shit flake idea?
>>
>>53031853
>she constructs an army of angels.
Seems like a nigh-impossible feat for a neowalker.
>>
>>53031853
If it's constructed, it can't have a spark unless through incredible circumstances they are given one.
>>
>>53031853
Shit idea.
Why does the random angel possess the power to absorb souls?
Why does random unnamed neowalker #302 decide the best way to invade Ravnica is to create an army of extremely visible creatures that are known to be strong allies of justice, when her goal is to overthrow the current (working) regime? Why not just recruit the discontent and downtrodden, like, you know, actually organizing the fucking Gateless?
>>
>>53031853
Constructing an army of permanent angels is something only oldwalkers are capable of and Ravnica was off-bounds for planeswalkers before the Mending.
The only entity capable of forcefully taking a spark is Memnarch, who engineered an entire plane for that single purpose.
Why would a planeswalker choose angels as their soldier of choice? I mean, why would you go with the magical construct most likely to feel empathy?

Too many holes, I'm afraid. Bad idea.

Glake concept: mono white walker with several decades of experience who will save the multiverse from itself, and bring order to the galaxy. Do we need another UGB walker? Was thinking of making a guy who took the whole 'Destiny is real and you all have to play your part' thing from green, adding some black "Man my destiny is shit" and blue "and here's how I'm gonna fix it"
Any good, or should I just BUG and make a SPIDERS SPIDERS AHAHAAH walker?
>>
>>53036422
I'm not sure. My way of going about it was "my destiny is fucking awesome and fuck anyone who is going to stand between me and it." Green demands some respect of destiny and the way that you're using blue and black makes it sound like they don't like the destiny they're given and are trying to avoid it.

Maybe have green be 'destiny's real and you've got to play your part,' while black is 'but I'd really like it if my destiny was awesome for me,' with blue going 'so here's how I'm going to reinterpret it to make it awesome for me.'

Fixing destiny sounds a bit anti-green. Finding the perfect interpretation of destiny that benefits you the most is just blue, black and green enough that it works.

So his motivation is to disrupt the course of destiny and save his people from destruction? The former is not green whatsoever and the latter is most certainly white.

I'm having a hard time seeing the self-interest and ambition that would make him black, or what makes his green beyond his use of leyline magic.
>>
>>53040679
>self-interest and ambition
Maybe he wants to save his people not because he truly carea about them, but because he wants to satisfy his ego by being the hero everyone worships? Maybe he has a compulsive desire to feel important.
>>
>>53038782
Sounds mono blue, maybe blue-black to me. Scholarly and spacetime warp-y spells from blue and leeching spells from black.

Just because a character is somewhat related to tradition, destiny, or past stuff at all, it doesn't have to be green.

Just because a character can get angry, doesn't mean it has to be red.

Just because a character has a personal goal, doesn't mean it has to be black.

Just because a character has some modicum of intellect beyond being a slobbering retard doesn't mean it has to be blue.

Just because a character has some adherence to law or religion doesn't mean it has to be white.

In most cases, sentient beings have some intellectual interaction in aspects from all 5 colors, and would have to be extremely single minded not to. Using a color to identify a character means it's a crucial part of a character's identity. It's not just a matter of it being present, but a matter of a character being made invalid for its absence.

Glad you like it. I imagine she's tried a few times but doesn't really get her hopes up. Being in the audience of a theatre where Rakdos had a temper tantrum tends to end poorly.

There probably is a good story in her restraining her use of magic on Kalades, seeing as how she seems to almost exclusively use aether magic and machines now. Even the more obviously magic stuff, like Auger Spree and Mizzium Mortars just mostly look like machines.

I imagine she was there before, during, and after the revolution. It'd be the perfect time to get her hands on some more exciting toys and test what she had, hence why she now has Gearhulks in her arsenal.

Man, between you and pornfag up here >>53027166 we're halfway to the worst posting of the first snowstorm already.
All you need is some digimon fanart and to be friends with one of the major villains that'd otherwise hate you and you can be this storms Arakis.

>>53063799
So I'll explain in pieces.
First: Snowflakes are not supposed to warp canon. Ever. You might as well say your flake gave an impassioned speech that made Liliana turn Orzhov
Your flake shouldn't have enough influence among minotaurs to push them white enough for Mogis to be influenced. There's already a WR force on Theros in the polis of Akros, and if they don't listen to Akros, why would they listen to you?

That's off the top of my head.
>>
>>53063799

I was told that a plane consisting of only two-/three mana would be highly unstable and unravel the moment anything not those colors shows up.
But what about planes that are dominated by one color?

Like let's say it's red.
There's like one huge mountain chain and the other colors are represented like in dual colored lands. So you'd have like a cliff like coastal area for blue, a constantly active volcano for black, dunno what would be red/green or red/white but you get the idea.

Would this be possible?
>>
>>53070266
I'm pretty sure that's Innistrad, except with swamps.
>>
>>53070365
That would certainly explain a lot.
>>
>>53070266

I am 90% sure that it's only artificial planes with unbalanced Mana that end up unstable and need maintenance from an old-Walker. Serra's Realm was stable until Urza accidentally brought Black Mana to it, and OG Phyrexia was unstable being only black Mana. But that's only speculation because those are the only two artificial planes I can think of at the moment. We all thought Amonkhet would be artificial, but it turn out that Bolas just raped the Plane into near death instead.

The "Soul of <insert plane name here>" creatures represent the main color of mana for several planes, with Soul of Shandalar being Red, while Innistrad is black (>>53070365). So I assume that planes can naturally exist with their mana being uneven favoring one color or another or even omitting them.
>>
>>53070524
I wouldn't exactly call those Soul Plane cards cannon though;
Wasn't there one for Theros? A plane where essentially all colors and combos get a representative God?
>>
>>53070580
Well all planes have a color they lean to. Theros is heavily White/Green, and since Soul of Zendikar was Green, Theros got White.

Theros is heavy on Faith and Destiny, hence White/Green

Tarkir, for example, is constant war and dragons, so it's probably red leaning. Appropriately enough, Mardu, Temur, and Jeskai were the clans that mattered.
>>
I'd argue that new Tarkir is probably more white aligned; exemplifying some of the more negative aspects of that color.
>>
>>53070635
Right but if there were cannon they might have made an appearance -somewhere- within the story.
Nissa is out there talking to planes; you would think that during the Eldrazi corruption of Zendikar and Innistrad she would have pulled those out. But she didn't.
I mean heck, her elemental friend for Zendikar actually disproves their existence.

I'm not even sure what an Avatar is in MTG...
>>
>>53070753
>I'm not even sure what an Avatar is in MTG...
Clearly. Joking!

But an Avatar is basically a freaky amalgamation of mana that embody an aspect or thing. In MTG it's basically a projection of power.
In Ashaya's case, Zendikar has a lot of power to manifest, so in addition to the Soul of Zendikar running around, it had powerful Elementals like Omnath being pissed at everything, and even made Ashaya to help Nissa since she was the one that could control Zendikar's leylines, and thus, was important to the plane.

She didn't try summoning an Innistradi Ashaya because Innistrad almost immediately tried to eat her when she tried. The Avatars are separate from the Elementals though.

The best way I can explain the difference is that you have a "Fire Elemental" and an "Avatar of Heat"
All cards outside of Time Spiral and Khans of Tarkir are canon
>>
>>53070753

It's one of the more vague creature types, it's true.

Is there a major appreciable difference between an Avatar and an Incarnation?
>>
>>53070887
An Avatar is an embodiment of the whole plane, an Incarnation is the embodiment of something specific within the plane
>>
>>53070862
So Avatars are more... conceptual? Like your Avatar of Heat example and the more abstract like Avatar of Woe and these planar Souls?
Then what are kami?

Planes naturally have a certain "weight" of mana analogous to their position in the multiverse. Innistrad and I assume Amonkhet are black-mana dominated, while planes like Kaladesh and Ravnica, representing a form of order, are white mana dominated (although argument could be made both of them are white/blue dominated). Tarkir is red-dominated, Iquati is blue-dominated, phyrexia is fucking insane, and dominria is maybe the best balanced plane.
Basically, each plane will vary in the relative "strength" of mana on that plane, which seeps into all the other colors with it, through the connected leylines. That's why even the islands and mountains of innistrad are dark as shit, forests are only mostly sinister and hazardous to any kind of order, and plains are sparse.

Kaladesh is basically a really Izzet or Gruul plane. Everything is built around aether which is a naturally occurring weather phenomenon there and a little bit of regulation is all people need to get pissed off and go full "My Revolution!" there.

So Red because it's more "muh freedom" than America, followed by either Green for the natural resource of aether, or Blue because everyone present has a boner for the perfection of invention.
>>
>>53071071
Kaladesh is colorless.
>>
>>53071086
No, Mirrodin was the colorless artifact plane, because it was itself a giant artifact. Kaladesh is a natural plane, and therefore has color.

It's a white/blue artifact deck. Red is heavily suppressed by the nature of the plane, it took the jacetice league to fuck up the natural order for things to change.
>>
>>53072591
>Aether spirals in patterns across the land
Green
>Imagination and creativity
Red and blue
>People are disposed to making artifacts, it's played as a creative pursuit of innovation
Red and blue again.
Ignoring what you said by the aetherborn, since calling them "organized" is a really, really liberal use of the word, it's very much a red/blue plane, filled with everything trying to innovate and create, where everyone was focused on creativity and freedom, and the white/blue order of the consulate didn't mesh with most denizens and was easily hijacked and corrupted.
Appropriately enough most energy counters, which are the aether of the plane, are focused in red and blue, and it's major mechanic in origins, thopters, was in red and blue in Origins.

"Structure the land" doesn't mean anything, that artifacts "Work well" doesn't mean anything, and calling the aetherborn "organized" doesn't mean anything.

The only thing suppressing red was the consulate
>But muh Jacetice league has to be wrong!!!
There was an entire revolution brewing without them showing up, they just became power units to counter everything Tezzeret brought to the consulate and Chandra's pretty much allowed to interfere with her homeplane as much as she wants anyway. If Sorin can lord over Innistrad, Chandra can riot against the consulate

I think it is a fact though that before the actions at the Inventor's Fair the rebels on Kaladesh weren't going to actually overthrow anything.
They were just being... well criminals. It was Tezzeret's actions that caused the rebellion in the first place.

Pretty closely. He's a lot more crotchety. however. Pink had curiosity, and a goal to grant understanding to people who were curious about planar mechanics and better his surroundings by spreading what he uncovered. Kherto's much more, "It works, so don't cause a fuss." He's designed to be a pretty okay grunt for a BBEG, since he's based off of stax <And to a lesser extent, low cost voltron> and favours order over ideals.

>R/U can't create a stable government.
It possibly could, but it won't. Government is a white thing period. At most RU would create a science, or in this case artifice, meritocracy where the best inventors lead

That's beside the point though, since the Consulate isn't integral to Kaladesh's identity as a plane. Kaladesh is the "energy and artifice" plane, which is why it's RU. Ravnica is the "Government of guilds" plane, which is why it's WU

A majority of renegades are either the Aetherborn crimelords and their connections, or greedy artificers who believe that they deserve more Aether then they get, or believe they know best.
>>
>>53078079
Because aether is apparently an abundant natural resource on Kaladesh that replenishes faster than the artificers consume and yet the Consulate decided to regulate and control who gets what anyway instead of letting people take that aether and expand economically to the point where the big draw of the inventor's fair was "unrestricted aether access"

It'd be like only major cities being allowed to have electricity because they "need" it more.

Unregulated technology leads to increasingly dangerous devices finding their way into the hands of civilians.

I mean, look at today where billions of people own armored killing machines that can plow through dozens of people or where you can easily purchase a drone that can be adapted for the purpose of mass murder.

Some technology is meant to be regulated and controlled, rather than be allowed to leak out into civilian hands.

As opposed to some artificer inventing an atom-to-aether machine and accidently destroying a city block, or deciding that their construct needs more aether to power it and steals from my reserves.

>>
>>53088057
Dovin's magic is basically just super powerful editing skills. He notices problems that can be fixed.

Saheeli's magic is being magically good at artifice. She can warp metal with her hands or something.
They're basically okay because they're powers are controlled and geared toward artifice instead of Chandra the living flamethrower.

Trying to remain as objective as possible, he is pretty red and green.

He's devoted to reversing Obama's changes and making things the way they should be and he's very interested in preserving the culture and lifeblood of the US through exclusion of outside forces. That's all quite green At the same time, a lot of what he does is very spur-of-the-moment, impulsive and reactive and the way he whipped up the support of little America until they were in a frenzy is pretty red.

Trump is an example of RG without being a luddite, just through putting a lot of value on tradition and sticking it to the man.

>>
>>53088191
All planeswalkers have magic.

It's just that Dovin's superpower that the creative team focuses on is his super sight because the creative team is too fucking lazy to have their characters use a diverse set of spells and just have them use their signature superpowers all the time.
>>
>>53088141
Objectively speaking, your also portraying RG and Trump in a positive light.
The negative light would be that he's eliminating progress and systems that have been put in place over the course of decades because he doesn't like them, and is determined to hold onto traditions that are slowly becoming irrelevant due to how the world's changing due to global marketing instead of adapting to it and is determined to isolate the US in a very "foreigners get out, REEE" sort of way.
>>
>>53088191

I mean, depending on what tools or spells he has other than that, his power could also be fucking broken, because he always knows every weak point in the person or thing he's looking at. If Gideon's aura has a vulnerability, Baan knows what it is just with a cursory glance. If a structure has a weakness, he can find it, immediately. If there's a phobia or psychological weakness in his enemy, he knows what it is.

If he can do martial arts he could probably be like that Inhuman guy from Marvel Comics who has a similar power and uses it to break people.

>>53088218
It's not even super sight really. Like I said, it's super editing. He can tell when shit's wrong and fix it before it goes wrong.
This can be the mundane, like when he casually rearranged Jace's library after Liliana fucked it up for shits and giggles, or the abstract, like when he cut out a lot of the consulate's red tape and reorganized it to be more efficient.
Basically his superpower is "If he ever met the Azorious, even their bureaucracy would disappear overnight."

>>53088244
I'll admit he himself is possibly not a luddite, but he definitely put some kind of idiot in charge of america's schools and his travel ban only really hurt colleges, since they profit a fuckton from educating immigrants. So accidentally luddite if that's possible. He hasn't ordered infrastructure be destroyed yet though, so that's something.

I'll say Trump is Jund. He's still a greedy businessman on top of everything.
>>
I'm surprised we had a discussion about Trump in the context of MtG without summoning... that board, or the tumblrtots.
>>
>>53088300
He can also exploit flaws in a structure that he wishes to take down. It's not just defensive, it can be offensive too.

Also, the point of the example is that an individual that crusades for the preservation of tradition and defense against outside forces can be RG without being your typical Gruul caveman - whether or not you agree with the traditions and the culture that they're defending and the methods that are used. So through this, you can have a Gruul character that isn't totally fucking awful.

If this statement is made in an attempt to assert that control is out of the character's hand and it is the natural course of destiny, it's green.

I don't see the white in it.

He waits and watches, as is his wont. Though, he has spent some time as of late in preparation for an expedition to New Phyrexia, in search of artifacts.
>>
>>53089462
I find it hard to believe that some chump in a lab could engineer a spark when a world of phyrexian engineers couldn't
>>
>>53089462
>>53089501
Yeah, maybe change it so he tried to make a spark, and ended up just switching his own. Seems a bit too special snowflake if you know what I mean.
>>
>>53089462
There are a couple issues with this. For one
>Created by a planeswalker
Created being cannot naturally hold sparks
>Preferred Decks
>Nonsense self-mill
Deck name doesn't fit WU
>Angel
>Male
Angels are female in almost every plane.
All in all, Nice job, Vronak.
>>
>>53089462
Shit! What was the name of that angel again? The one who's portrait you used
Also, yeah >>53089501 has an absurdly valid point. The only way this guy could come about is if the creator gave their own spark to him
>>
>>53089530
Crafted beings can hold sparks as long as they aren't phyrexians as well
>>
>>53089552
Crafted beings cannot be born with a spark, it must be given to them by another planeswalker, ad even that is rare.
>>
>>53089462
Vronak, leave.
>>
>>53089562
Actually it'd be more accurate to say that such an event is unique since there's only been ONE crafted planeswalker
>>
>>53089781
What about all these flakes :^)
>>
>>53089327
Honestly I feel like Fuar might just let him go on his way. I mean, he's already doing what Fuar wants essentially.
>>
>>53088711
>>53089327
>>53089904
Straight up, he is a prime target for Fuar Linn. He's either going to let him go so he can get stronger, or he's going to capture him immediately and try him out on other planeswalkers before dueling him directly.
>>
I'm thinking about making a mono red vampire flake. Which clan is more interesting/got fucked less in Shadows? Falkenrath or Stromkirk?
>>
>>53090752
Definately Falk. Storm lost their shit and went full Cthulu because they were directly under Momma Ems when she came out, while the Falks fought with Sorrin against her.
They're close to extinction though, both of them.

Writing experiment:
Pick a spell, instant, sorcery, ect any kind, and describe how your flake would cast it.
Do they do it completely by the book? Or do they have their own style of wielding their mana that doesn't match the card's art very well?
>>
>>53092115
this seems like a really neat idea.
>>
>>53088009
You know I don't think that this character would fight Nissa after thinking about it.
I mean all she does is see leylines and make elementals. Presumably with the Plane's okay seeing as how she can talk to them.
Unless he's also going to hunt down everyone who can see/tap into a leyline as well and then commit suicide because guess what, he can see them to.

He'd probably fight Nahiri though. She can find leylines and manipulate them to serve her purpose.

If everything and everyone takes colors to their logical extremes, then why does Dovescape exist? What's blue or white about this spell other than it contains the words "counter" and "flying"

I am not good at magic
>>
>>53094333
It over-regulates the use of potentially harmful magic (aka any magic) by transforming any magical spell into a swarm of doves, the symbol of peace and prosperity.
>>
>>53094333
Irrelevant, but one of my favourite games of EDH was when someone cast dovescape and I had Atraxa and Arcbound Reclaimer out, and Engineered Explosives in hand.
>>
>>53094565
I've only been playing for like two weeks, but it's one of my favorite cards so far. I don't have one yet because playing kitchen table modern with my roommate means one Dovescape would cost as much as about a quarter of one of my decks.

What's the best way to get into MtG lore? Preferably stuff that would be relevant to whatever's going on in the lore lately because I heard something about a huge soft reset that made a bunch of awful stories from before it obsolete

Is everything from the point of view of the space wizard avengers from the Origins stories in Duels?
>>
>>53090752

I think Avacyn destroyed the Falkenrath bloodline entirely during Shadows and the Stromkirk became cthulu cultists. Combine that with Nahiri stoning the entire Markov bloodline to death and I think ONLY the Voldaren bloodline survived EMN.
>>
>>53094333
It's an extreme force of Azorius-style WU inaction, coupled with a weird W token-spam effect.
>>
>>53095080
Only till about four or five years ago. Previous to RtR the stories were much more diverse, and the Avengers thing only picked up at BfZ.
>>
>>53095382

There were Falkenrath vampires in Eldritch Moon, but they seemed less of a family and more of a roving Horde. Some of the Markov survived, atleast until they assaulted Markov Manor (no idea if they made it after that, possibly). The Stromkirk went all tentacles and hentai for Emrakul.
>>
>>53093381

Well, they are Snowflakes...
>>
>>53095080
Best way to brush up quick is scans of booklets in clued in more recent fat packs and mtg salvation articles. Wizards also has a story archive, if you want more minute details, but all of what I mentioned only goes back so far, barring mtg salvation.

Only real "big reset" was þe mending in time spiral, which happened 11 years ago. Pre-mending, planeswalkers <franchise's most prominent characters> were all functionally gods who existed in between worlds and projected bodies out, making 'em ridiculously powerful and pretty much immortal. Post mending, planeswalkers are just normal beings who are a little bit tougher and can teleport between different planes.

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/columns/magic-story is where you can read story told at its current natural pace. All recent events center around amonkhet, so "Impact" going forward.

>Like all Kaladesh/Izzet "mages" Petra has quite a suite of hardware on her person at all times. Though unlike either of them, since she uses artifacts powered by aether instead of electricity, and she can supply the aether as a mage and save herself the need of carrying big heavy storage tanks of the stuff.
Or to put in a simpler terms via example: Petra would have an aether pistol that casts Galvanic Blast as long as she remembers to put aether read: mana into it.

>pic related

>Vosmir
A vial of mutagen. Likely to turn you into a frog or something, if you don't get it off.

>Tristain
Throwing dagger to the skull. Helpfully enhanced by wind magic.

>Loren
A wave of sonic energy.

>Hazaur
Hits you over the head with whatever that Clue he's carrying is. (A scepter? A pendant? Who knows.)

>Rezarek
A magically-enhanced claw to the face.

>Heles Car
A punch backed by ~250 pounds of muscle. It's gonna hurt.

>Sorca
Pure mana, applied directly to the forehead. Enough to overwhelm your senses, normally, but not enough to kill you.

>Graves
She's not actually going to do anything. Maybe one of the shmucks below her can do it for her.

You know, now that I think about it, most of my flakes aren't really all that good at traditional magic.
>>
>>53099108

>>
>>53092115
>Salum, casting Silence
A stern statement, with a wave of his hand, as white light glows from it and appears over the target's mouth.

>Salina, casting Twiddle
A gentle, curved hand motion, lightly shifting something.

>Costin, casting anything
A nervous build-up followed by a feeling of dread as the spell manifests somewhere around him, sometimes accompanied by a thin, black haze.

>Tyral
With physical motion rather than words. And followed by physical motion. Probably at a pace quick enough that you were caught off guard before you had a full grasp of what just happened.

>Karrok, buffing his size
Chanting of some tribal words, and a grunt or a roar as he gets bigger.

>muh jappo lizard references

Akmogenos's last line of cards (brainstorm, epiphany storm, vanquish, light from within) represent how he's stumbled onto stoking the vibrant, innovative and inspirational aspects of one's soul to such an extent that it destroys their body. This is a feat he is terrified of ever using because it seems to him morally wrong to ever hurt someone with their own potential, and is putting great effort into trying to figure out how he can flare their inner fires to their brightest and most beautiful without hurting them.

Ka'koarm just does crazy fucking shit, and probably cast all his spells different ways each time, the absolute madman

Changed his story a bit, to make it less WG and more UBG.
Tried to focus on the idea he was certain his destiny was a good thing, and when it wasn't, tried to rationalize where it might have gone wrong and go back to that.

> Describe how your flake would cast their spells
> Planeswalking
Decouples himself from the leylines of the world he's on, causing mild plant growth, plant death, or visual shimmers depending on the mana he's connected to at that moment, and then just just lets himself fall through the Blind Eternities. Can't stop himself stumbling when he lands, since he's not used to planeswalking.
> Casting Fate Foretold
Not really 'casting', I imagine it more as a force of will thing, drawing on the memory of some of his former visions (or having a vision) that gives him a clue as to what to do next.
> Fate Transfer/Undying Evil
Uses the Sharing, which requires physical contact and creates a visual distortion in the physical forms of what he's touching.
> Casting Life From the Loam/Vigean Intuition
Aggressively forces two leylines (UG or GB respectively) to pump their mana into eachother to supercharge the growth cycle. Requires a bit of handwaving and a mental visualization due to the complexity of making opposite colors work together, but it's mostly instinctive rather than a 'spell', like most of his repertoire.
> Anything else
Uses the spells he picked up on Innistrad, and Ravnica, usually quite clumsily and with aggressive leyline drain that takes more mana than he really needs.

tl;dr, he's mostly self taught (badly) and on his leyline-linking quest he was told he can use whatever mana he wants, even if it's really scarce and he's still not over that.
>>53103660
