In surprise twist, being a wizard is kinda shit.

I would personally pick either the space ship or watching humanity prosper. None of the others appeal to me, the universe described in space ship doesn't sound all that exciting whereas the prospering one does.

I wish /tg/ would get IDs.

Anyway, I posted Branching Hearts couple threads ago and people wondered about it being almost 30 pages. This one is shorter, only 15.

However, Branching Hearts was EASY. Just read until you find your waifu and then it's just half page of text, maybe the library bonus. This one tells you refer to different pages for rules, has you picking skills multiple times for different states of childhood and have potentially RETROACTIVE cost reductions for skills.

No waifus tho, some q3.14s but not a word about how much they love you no matter what.

Brace ur butts.

>Character

Loptr was a relatively studious child, but an adventurous one. Tales of the past instilled within him a deep passion for magic of all kinds, one furthered by the discovery that his magical aptitude allowed him to wield both divine and arcane magic with surprising skill for a youth. Loptr is surprisingly eloquent for a young child. His manners are impeccable for one so young.
Naturally lucky and charismatic despite occasionally seeming a little off, Loptr made three fast friends during his youth-the flighty Orin, met during a foreign diplomatic meeting hosted by the Church, Pitus, who met him during a meeting between the king and the master swordsman, and the witch Sienna, who once abducted alongside Loptr and helped the prince escape. He is also close with a young Flame Draminth that he once aided. It has the loyalty of a hound, but the temperament of a cat.

The prince's greatest challenge was the Trial of the King, where he encountered monsters who would have surely taken his life were it not for the aid of his tireless protector, the enigmatic Knight of the Red Thorn, who allowed him to move through the ruins without loss of life. The experience left the prince a little wiser and more cautious, although he seldom shares specifics of what he encountered there.

End childhood with 10 neutral fate points and 10 positive.

CYOA WIP 55 Wonderful Choices.jpg
2MB, 1400x8130px
Here, first attempt at modifying the venerable "choices with a sting" CYOA. Over 2 hours in GIMP, though most of them coming up with ideas for a choice I've eventually scrapped. I wanted to remain true to the old "style", without too many frills or additions. Most of the choices are basically the same, sometimes with a little rewording. Others I've modified, added or removed as need be. The theme I've tried to keep to was that the drawbacks should be natural consequences of the essential wish between each choice itself. Ideally, at least with some of them, when someone decides not to make a choice because "the drawbacks feel too severe" it should be possible to point out them that it's effectively the same choice they've made in any number of other CYOAs, hopefully getting them to really think about something.

I mean things like part 2/3 of vampire king (everything between wife and ambassadors), item section of harem island or last parts of angel/demon roommate cyoas (no items but the same priniciple). There is very little interaction between those parts and waifupicking
>>
>>52992252
No, according to the wording she'll DO HER BEST to. She's clearly not superhuman, she's a probably miserable person who at best has no free will and more likely is programmed to obey your every selfish order. Even the whole sex part is described mechanically. She's not into you, she's programmed to be forcibly aroused by you.

The point of the choice is asking you whether you're okay with having a wretched fuckslave so long as they make a good enough show of pretending to really like you.
>>
>>52992009
>Ideally, at least with some of them, when someone decides not to make a choice because "the drawbacks feel too severe" it should be possible to point out to them that it's effectively the same choice they've made in any number of other CYOAs, hopefully getting them to really think about something.

"The Genius" and "The Artiste" fail that criterion hard: plenty of CYOAs allow you to get smarter or more artistically talented, but I've never seen one that tacks on "your work will never really help anyone" or "your art will never be popular in your lifetime." (If it was me, I'd take The Genius, use my insight to anticipate the deadly consequences of certain fields, and actively steer humanity away from them via fraud--effectively creating anti-science to improve the lot of humanity.)

"Nobody will ever truly love you" is also somewhat overused in this version of the CYOA.

Ah yes i never bother with those parts i just pick my waifus and be on my way if it does not mix well might as well not be there
>>
>>52992318
The only time that's implied is when it says they'll never say they have a headache despite potentially having one. Otherwise, there is almost no indication that they're a miserable person putting on a show instead of a robot that happens to be made out of meat. If that is intended to be the dilemma, then that should be what is emphasized.
>>
>>52992337
Hence the comment about the essential wish behind choices. It's kind of the old "Well, you've wished for _____, so surely you'll be happy with this, right?". The wish behind the Artiste is to become a great artist, presumably for some lofty purpose, not gain riches and fame. If you read it and the fact you won't makes you hesitate, it forces you to consider whether you really wanted to be an artist or just a celebrity.

Same as for the Genius. When you see choices like that in CYOAs, it's very common for people to say they'll choose them for the chance to "advance humanity" or "for the science" or something along those lines (which is what's being referred to in the CYOA). The choice asks you just how truly pure is your dedication to science as an ideal, and how much of it really stems from some other motivation, like wanting to enforce your own particular vision of the future on humanity. After all, you are offered the choice to limit yourself to small discoveries that won't get abused. But then you won't get to develop AI or fusion power or whatever it is you so dearly wish to see the future revolve around.
>>
>>52992009
The Innocent. Becoming a cute girl to live a fun and positive school life with caring family and friends would be amazing, especially if it lasted forever. It would be perfectly comfy and pleasant, as fulfilling and exciting as I could ever want.
>>
>>52992411
Not the guy who made this, just my interpretation. It's a pretty common argument of antiwaifuers in general, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was used.
>>
>>52992411
>instead of a robot that happens to be made out of meat
I'm not sure what's more disturbing, that you're implying you WOULD be fine loving a "robot which happens to be made out of meat" because it's pretty good at going through the motions of loving you or that the alternative never even crossed your mind.

Fucking hell here is the CYOA...
>>
>>52992318
>>52992411
^that was my intention. The Beloved's "waifu" isn't exactly a robot and I won't go as far as to explicitly compare her to someone who's been brainwashed (or for that matter, threatened) into going out with you, since that would be contrary to the atmosphere of the CYOA, but it's supposed to be pretty strongly implied that what you're dealing with here isn't true love but the shallow act thereof. It's the same question that's been brought up in a million waifu shitstorms: how much *unlike* actual love is having a tailor made robo girlfriend who'll do nothing but fulfill your wishes.

It's pretty late now so I'm going to go to bed. If by the morning it seems like too many people have missed the point I'll look into maybe rewording the option. It seems to be a 50/50 so far, so no point in fixing what might not be broken.
>>
>>52992497
Oh, sure, I wasn't trying to attack you or anything. Just discussing the CYOA in general. It's where the emphasis is that makes the difference in terms of considering the dilemma.

Let's use the example of Innocent. The dilemma seems to be that your life is really comfortable, but you will never really grow or change. But that is exactly what people want out of that sort of life: stability and freedom from pain. Now, what if instead of just presenting that as a potential negative, we look more into the implications? Maybe you personally don't want to grow or change, but what about every other person in your fantasy life? Did they want to grow and change, to move on? Is the father frustrated at his job that he never seems to advance in? Do all your friends feel anxious to move onto a new stage of life that never comes? Now there is a real conflict: how many people are you willing to sacrifice for your perfect life? Because if they're all perfectly content, the choice basically becomes "are you sure you won'the be bored?" which is a much simpler question. For the waifu, more indication that she doesn't have a choice despite wanting one, rather than that "she" has been engineered to make choices that conveniently slot into your desires, would make it much more of a moral dilemma.

A. the cyoa is enough of a wall of text I really wouldn't do it
B. There's making a pretty unsubtle "reconsider your life" cyoa then there's just spoonfeeding the reader guilt. You've just proven it's perfectly possible for someone to come up with all those questions without having to have them spelled out by the text. Assuming the point was to get you to think, it's done its part.

>>
>>52992702
I think that is pretty much it but he wants to find something else too because apparently it is too good
>>
>>52992461
That seems silly, actually.

I suspect that many people who want to be good at art have an expectation that people will look at their stuff and say, "Hey, you're good at art!" This is not the same thing as wanting to be rich or famous.

Most of the people who actually do science-- I'd guess maybe 80%-- do it because they want to improve the lot of humanity. The other 20% have some mysteries they really want to crack; they're the people who think that learning about the universe is intrinsically good, and they usually don't do stuff with practical applications. It's generally acknowledged that we don't know how things are going to play out, but the emphasis really is on helping people, in the long run.

In other words, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of actual, practicing scientists wouldn't take The Genius, and they'd excoriate someone who did. I pretty much assumed that most people who took science options in CYOAs had the same motives.
>>
>>52992702
Right, so "are you sure you won't get bored?" But for the kind of person who would ever pick that option in the first place, the answer is probably an immediate "no" because boring stability is what they're looking for in the first place.
>>
>>52992009
Correct me if I'm wrong about the "question" of each choice (since you want to know whether they're clear and all):

The Genius: Do you have a true desire to advance humanity for the sake of advancing it or do you want to control its future?

The Artiste: Do you really care about your art or is it more about the perks that come from being a successful artist?

The Paragon: Do you hate your current body/want a different body enough you'd be willing to trade your whole life for it?

The Socialite: Do you want to get popular without effort even though that popularity is shallow?

The Degenerate: Would you really be happy doing nothing for the rest of your life except NEETing it up?

The Innocent: Would you really never get tired of living the exact same saccharine fantasy every day for the rest of eternity without any chance for change or growth?

The Hero: Do you really want to live the life of a superhero?

The Predator: Do you really have it in you to become a completely amoral badass?

The Terminator: Pretty much the same as the Predator desu so far as I can see

The Magician: Do you want knowledge that much you'd be willing to accept knowing something painful, i.e. that your actions cause misery

The Explorer: would you be okay never seeing home again if it meant seeing something wildly different

The Adventurer: basically the same thing with an added layer of paperback fantasy wish fulfillment

The Stranger: Do you really want a life that's perfectly stable and predictable?

The Beloved: as discussed

Did I get it right?
>>
>>52992731
>I'm pretty sure the vast majority of actual, practicing scientists wouldn't take The Genius, and they'd excoriate someone who did
To be honest, most people who actually want to love someone would never pick a standard waifu option, most people who want a "stable life" would never pick something like the Innocent and most people would never pick something like the Predator or Terminator under any condition. /cyoag/ is kind of a bubble filled with a very specific kind of person.
>>
>>52992731
I read it more as the Artiste asking people whether they want to be remembered/affect a great change in culture. It certainly seems to be something a lot of wannabe artist teenagers like to talk about until they realize how demanding and unfulfilling the life of an artist really is (just like in the option)
>>

Loptr's magical studies progress impressively, supplemented by a new interest in physical combat. He takes to swordplay well, now wielding a blade in tandem with his diverse magics.

He stays close to all his old friends, who joined are all doing well at the school. Pitus' encouragement was at the heart of his decision to take up the blade.

He makes two new friends at the school-the cocky illusionist Dainslef and the carefree Haylie. He's also become very close to Charlie, daughter of the Arch-Mage Oberon. They knew each other as children but were more rivals in magic than friends. At Aquinas their relationship has blossomed into mutual appreciation-although their opposing elemental specialties and Loptr's 'brutish' swordplay cause no end of bickering.

Both expected to win Matia, and only the immense prestige of Prowell kept Loptr from a meltdown when Charlie beat him to the medal. Even so, Loptr jumped quicker than anyone to answer Charlie's call for help when she was revealed to be the bastard heir to the Pallidian Empire, managing to release her from an arranged marriage through clever statesmanship.

That's what I figured too. It might take a hundred or a thousand or a million years but eventually all the strawberry cakes and cute tea parties and blue summer skies in the world are going to get old.

Plus, you'll never again get to enjoy whatever stuff you really might be enjoying about being an adult. I think the choice actually could benefit from adding a subtle comment about how unfortunate it is you'll never again get to watch an R-rated film, never have sex, never get a license, never drink, never achieve independence and never even accomplish anything (since your skills are only good FOR A NORMAL KID, not an adult. Even if you really munchin'd the wording and went "there ain't no rule saying I CAN'T break into the town library and teach myself quantum mechanics every year until I'm eventually good at it!" the very act of doing something like getting a job would break the "perfectly normal childhood" fantasy, so it probably won't be possible)

One thing I've just noticed about the Genius and Artiste which is kind of neat is that both of those give you to the option to just about completely circumvent the drawback if you're okay with giving up the Big Prize. With Genius, you have the option of never inventing anything earthshaking, in which case you'll STILL BE A GENIUS, WHICH ISN'T ALL THAT BAD OF A DEAL (how many people do you think can name 3 Nobel Prize winners in chemistry from the past twenty years? Just because these guys aren't part of Joe Redneck's tiny reference pool doesn't mean they aren't freaking celebrities in academic circles, WHICH IS EVERYWHERE THEY GO ANYWAY). For the Artiste, yeah it sucks to dedicate your life to art and never see any of the rewards but if I'm reading it correctly you aren't actually any worse off for it if you choose not to. You pretty much remain yourself, except with good ideas.

Don't know if it's intentional or just a fluke, but it does seem like it might prevent some of /cyoag/s usual "ALL THE OPTIONS ARE SHIT SO I CHOOSE NOT TO CHOOSE AND EVERYONE MUST KNOW HOW MUCH I DISLIKE IT" shenanigans.
>>

Observation: with the exception of Hero and Paragon, all the options actually come in pairs based on what fantasy they examine. Genius and Artiste both share the theme of "do you really want to improve mankind or just get the perks", Terminator and Predator are about "will you really be okay killing people if you had the power", Innocent and Otaku are both about getting a perfectly safe leisurely life in return for never getting to live a full one, Explorer and Adventurer are about getting to see amazing things in return for never seeing anything familiar and Stranger and Beloved are about asking yourself whether it isn't sometimes the work you put into things that makes them worth getting.

>>52993527
>innocents
>implying there aren't only degrees of guilt
>>
>>52993509
True, but the whole realizing your genius after death thing is an unrealistic romanticized fantasy in itself. Many artists would be fine if their influence was only on a very small scale or unconventional, wordwide renown isn't the only way to make an impact with art and not necessarily every "true artist"'s goal. Some people get off to "sure, no one recognizes my genius now, but when I'm gone they'll see, they'll all see." I'd say the desire for something like that can just as easily be a narcissistic power fantasy as it can be pure artistic aspirations.
>>
>>52993527
Supposedly the point now is you think why you've even wanted superpowers in the first place (e.g. "if it was so you can lord them over other people and do whatever you like, is it really all that different if someone else torments them for you?" or something like that)

>History

So Loptr has inherited the throne. He proves an effective and popular king, although he's a little distant. Even so, he's able to make crucial alliances with the Kosan Empire and Detia, giving him global influence both political and military. Alteria's military is numerous, versatile and efficient-whilst Loptr avoids expansion, he is capable of facing off most attackers, especially aided by the Kosan.

Loptyr's abilities are more impressive than ever. with both magical and physical abilities almost unparalleled and command of divine magic allowing even death to be undone. The power of the Essence of the Void renders magic meaningless against him and diminishes the effect of physical attacks such that his skills and Battlefield Protection render him unstoppable. Creation is very useful both for utility and creative use in combat. The undying Knight of the Red Thorn remains a deadly asset.

Loptr remains close with all his inner circle-Orin, Pitus, Sianna, Charlie, Dainslef and Haylie. He chooses to take Charlie and Dainslef's quests due to considering them the most world-changing. He and Charlie uncover the secrets of time manipulation together, and he learns the secrets of true illusion magic with Dainslef. He also works to uncover the mysteries of rune magic alongside a new friend, Faeron, causing Loptr to gain armor empowered by ancient rune magic.

Loptr's Fate, the battle with the seven escalating assassins, will almost prove his undoing but the myriad magical abilities he's accumulated, the powers of his many companions and the unique magics he's uncovered should see him through. His Fate concluded, he'll spend his time trying to challenge the Fate of his companions so that they might share immortality. Once he's done his duty to his kingdom, the group will travel together. I can see him eventually settling down with Charlie, the pair researching all branches of magic and bickering with one another for all eternity.

Finished.

The problem with this is that even if you did something nice, like cure AIDS, then only the rich will be able to have access to it, so very few people will actually prosper from it; then think of all the misery that's created by "Well the cure is out there, but I'll never get it" that most people who have AIDS will be thinking.

Honestly, removing my hunchback would be sort of strange at this point. I'd prefer to just not have to worry about being a burden on anyone to getting rid of it.

Isn't that already true though?

Old horror game on the Gamecube. Would probably be considered a gimmick now but at the time was revolutionary for fucking with the player both in-game and out as their sanity meter depleted. Those got so good. There was the one where the game pretended to end suddenly with a screen advertising the sequel, and the one where it threw up a message about a controller malfunction while your character was mauled to death... I really liked the one where the character with flintlocks could accidentally shoot himself while reloading and die, too.

The best effect was the one where the game pretended to delete your save file when you tried to save. That got me.

Do people prefer drawn images or photos? I'm thinking of just going around and snapping a bunch of pictures of hobos, but if people wouldn't enjoy it there's lots of drawings, western and eastern, that I can use.
>>

>>
>>52996389
>Do people prefer drawn images or photos?

Drawings, generally.
Part of the entertainment value of CYOAs is escapism, and for me that is drained quite a bit by photos of people.
Objects and items? Not a problem. Just photos of people.
>>
>>52996220
>Having to mix and match leaves you acutely aware of how limited your options are.
That's where the fun comes in. Power fantasies that let you become an omniscient and omnipotent godlike being are a dime a dozen. The fun doesn't come from being given the powers, the fun comes from figuring out how you can fully utilize what you have to get what you want done. Then going back and thinking it over even further. Working out the details, knowing what you can and can't do, and realizing that the limit you initially placed on your group of powers slowly gets pushed farther and farther away from where it began. And all that's only for one batch of assorted abilities. If you swap x with y but keep the rest your options change even more. And shit, what could you do with a set that's totally different from what you originally went with? The more options for customization, and the more restrictions there are, the better.
For me at, that is. Everyone does escapism differently. Keep on keeping on.

You sound autistic. I never said I wanted omnipotence. I just don't like having to stitch together half a dozen abilities to come up with something functional. I don't appreciate any of the minmaxed characters such cyoas inspire either.

Instead of making me buy "enhanced strength + enhanced agility + enhanced durability + etc. " tie all those together in one "superhuman body" option. If you want to have anon have varied builds, then offer multiple broad options. Picking classic powersets apart to create the illusion of choice is meaningless.

>years of practice

went to a cooking school. Not as skilled as you would be had you specialized and took on a mentor, but you're well balanced. Gives a bonus to three different regions of cooking, starts with zero experience in a high paced kitchen environment and a significant amount of debt
You browsed /ck/, watched cooking shows, and followed internet recipes. You're self learned, and quick to adapt. You lack any experienced in a high paced environment, but you pick up on things fast. You start with minor bonus to six regions of cooking and the adaptability perk which allows you to gain skill faster.

> It doesn't make sense you can give away attributes through Envy

Use the Envy ability to remove abilities from people and then give them to people who were envious of the people you took the ability from.
Suddenly, even bigger Envy.
Then swap them back.
Even BIGGER Envy.
Then take the ability again and give it to someone who doesn't give a shit about the ability.
Envy explosion and probably a murder.

Wait, so if I'm the Artiste I never gain any wealth?

I mean, it's not like I'm in it for the money, the description makes that quite clear, but what if I choose an art where the materials needed will be prohibitively expensive (for example, sculptures that are really big, music with lots of fancy instruments and production equipment, film with lots of sets and actors you need to hire, etc.)?
>>
>>52998048
Looks that way. No wealth and no recognition. Your work is looked down on and considered absolute trash, so good luck finding a wealthy patron to support your more costly endeavors.
>>
>>52996389
I generally prefer drawings, but the idea of anon sneaking around, taking pics of hobos, is too funny to pass up.
>>
>>52994973

The Broken Facade option in the Genie CYOA was slightly unsettling. Not so much for the 4th wall breaking aspects, but the implied eldritch horror/possession.
>>
>>52998095
>implied eldritch horror/possession
You mean the genie takes over your body or something? I've been wondering just what the result of that option is supposed to be. It's obviously not meant to be chosen, but it isn't really clear on what it means.
>>
>>52998179
From what the author said it's just something left to your imagination, with the only thing for sure is that it's pretty fucking terrible. On one hand that's kind of a lazy cop out, but it would probably be less creepy if he actually defined it.
>>
>>52994074
The essence of waifu choices on cyoa's isn't "being loved' and most certainly isn't "loving someone back", it's getting the shallowest benefits of a relationship without having to put any work into it. It IS disturbing, because people become borderline religiously attached to a fantasy that pretty much consists of having a personal fuckslave.
>>
>>52998371
I've said it before but I don't think anyone gets religiously attached to you average CYOA waifu. They read the description, think "she sounds fun to date and/or fuck", maybe have a quick fap, and then move on.
>>
>>52998371
That's a lot of projection. Why is is that you think you know every single other anon's mind and motivations?

Honestly, I get the vibe you either just hate waifus in CYOAs as a concept, or someone shit on some bad waifu character you made so you got all autistic about it. Which one is it?
>>
>>52998371
I'm sure your relationship with Mary Jean is very fulfilling, anon.

>>52998076
You could still gain wealth, just not from your art. Technically there's nothing preventing you from paying for art materials using wealth gained from other sources but if you want to get the Big Prize of writing an immortal masterpiece you'll have to dedicate so much time to it you couldn't have a demanding job, so it's going to take some balancing.
>>
>>52998425
More than your relationship with Sakuracoco chan~~
>>
>>52998179
It has to be one of my favorite CYOA options. The bit I like is the way that "Broken Facade" takes the generally accepted premise-- "Wow! An amazing thing has happened to you!"-- and adds a "Wait, this makes no goddamn sense. What's going on?" (The implication, of course, is that the answer is Not Good.) Ever since I first saw it, I've been trying to think up a way to create a CYOA that can be read in a least two different ways: cheery, if one interpretation of the events and choices is taken, and nightmarish, if you discern the other interpretation.

No great ideas on how to accomplish that yet, but it does make me want to play with codes and hidden messages in a CYOA...

>>52998254
It would definitely be less creepy if the nature of the option was explained, but it'd also be nice if there was a very subtle way to make a "Broken Facade" build, under the assumption that you're now playing a horror CYOA and everything you've selected has a clever secondary use for survival in a supernatural hell-world.
>>
>>52998501
Well you can use your 10000 points to get all the perks, cosmic power and multiple extra genies, so that's something.
>>
>>52998371
Well, I get where you're coming from, certainly. Maybe I'm just prone to elaborate daydreams, or more lonely than I think I am?

For example, there was one CYOA about giants arriving on Earth, and one of them was a huge mute Godzilla-like girl who could do a lot of damage despite her generally peaceful nature, and it was fun trying to figure out a way to teach her to explore a city without hurting anyone. (Start with a graveyard for ships or airplanes-- she can examine those all she likes, and even take them apart. Then it's don't-step-on-the-humans training. How can I do a test run on a city? A dense urban core is what she wants, but you can't just evacuate one of those for a day, and we don't have any spares-- aha! Take her down a river like the Thames or the Seine! In fact, the Champs Elysees might just be big enough for her, if we could get France to cooperate...)

Do other people do that? Construct convoluted waifu-related storylines in their heads?
>>
>>52995096
>obligatory "How's the update coming along?"
Also how have things been in general for you recently?
>>
>>52998561
Well, yes, in this CYOA that's how it works, certainly. I suppose I was thinking of it in terms of the hypothetical "dual reading" CYOA I mentioned; there, options X, Y, and Z would look like normal comfy waifu CYOA options-- but if you discover the horror interpretation, it becomes clear that X, Y, and Z have possible secondary uses as options that might help you survive in the nightmare world. (Lousy secondary uses, akin to using a beach ball for floatation as you flee a sinking ship, but better than nothing.) As it is, taking "Broken Facade" doesn't involve much of a strategy with respect to the rest of the CYOA.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd consider an AIDS vaccine or cure for a specific type of cancer to be a minor advancement compared to AI/fusion/FTL. Those three have the capability of radically and fundamentally changing society. Since an AIDS vaccine isn't as groundbreaking as true AI, the abuse or unintended consequences is less severe.
>>
>>52993960
If that was true, there would be no pvp either.

As written, it sounds like Dante's ironic punishment for scientists.

>Years and years of work developing new DNA synthesis methods, studying nuclear reprogramming, and slowly refining our understanding of IPS cells... but it works! We've overcome stem cell exhaustion! If the rat results translate well, we'll double the human lifespan!
>But... every attempt to get it to work in vivo fails miserably. This is an intermittent treatment, and an expensive one.
>Fuck, I've just handed civilization over to hyperwealthy overlords, haven't I?

>At long last: practical fusion! A century of dogged labor has finally paid off-- all the energy we need! Too cheap to meter!
>Huh. Turns out energy that's too cheap to meter screws over the global economy. Dammit.

>Hey, this should make for really cheap means of cleaning up heavy metal contamination! A bunch of Superfund sites could use it.
>Oh, wait, it's also a really cheap, simple method for uranium enrichment. Eeyup, nuclear terrorism ought to be pretty straightforward now.
>Fuck this, I quit.

The trouble is that science really is an altruistic endeavor, so the "sting" addresses a nonexistent ulterior motive. It has a certain "Oh, you donate to an orphanage, so you? Well, it burns down! With all the kids inside!" quality to it.
>>
>>52999171
You could also not be a bitch, dedicate your life to inventing something that will let you conquer the Earth, rule over it with an iron fist, and have those jocks who said science wasn't cool anally raped by sex bots.
>>
>>52999171
>"Oh, you donate to an orphanage, so you? Well, it burns down! With all the kids inside!"
I think it's more like "you donate to the orphanage, but this just affirms the greedy manager's intents so he cuts costs everywhere and makes life miserable for the kids so he can ask for more donations".

Aren't your examples pretty straightforward thought? In all the ones you've given, it was simple logic/the nature of the invention that made it "actually bad". Which actually seems to be the intention of the CYOA. It's not some devil ex machina that makes all your well intentioned projects backfire, it's the fact that for all your science you can't change human nature.
