Any colour theory anons know what's a good non-metallic colour to contrast with beige/tan?

Purple, dark/olive green, blues.
>>
What's the best rattle can primer? I'm using Tamiya enamel and Vallejo paints just peel right off it.
>>
>>52962984

I used a $3 can of Krylon grey from Walmart and had superb results. Then, I sprayed chaos black over it because I needed the dark undercoat for my Night Lords. I wasn't spraying metal, but I have resin bits and weapons.

If your shit is coming off, I think you need to clean them, though. That's probably the release agent.
>>
>>52962984
enamel paints and acrylics don't really play nice together, so perhaps that's the problem here?
>>
>>52963021
I had that thought, been told by multiple people that it should matter. I however an still skeptical.
>>52963010
Naw, I clean the models and wash my hands before priming and before painting, The worst was a metal F-86 where I was rubbing the paint off with my thumb, the day after it had been painted. Now to be fair. I also pressed some of the engraved details off, so I guess I have retard grip strength or something.
>>
>>52962588
what size do you use? I'm thinking of getting one myself.
>>

How long are you waiting to handle it? I've heard some primers can take a while to actually bind.
I usually give mine 24 hours.

Krylon's been sort of hit or miss with me over the years; a couple of years ago I would have said nothing to worry about, but they seem to have changed their formula recently. Last time I used thir gloss, it alligatored my acrylics. Kamar might presumably be safe (it's for art), but test on something first.
>>
>>52963021
>>52963139
Acrylics and enamels play fine together, but whatever you're spraying on to has to be fully cured first (not just touch dry).

I've been trying to find a way to make my terain look more intresting by making it feel worn and old.

But I can't for the life of me figure out a way to make metal and industrail yellow like pic related.

What can I use to model an Onager Gauntlet onto my Tau Commander, /tg/? I was thinking of attaching the arm mounted siege drill, minus the drill part, from the assault centurion kit onto my Commander's arm. Then stick a giant spike in the front of it and make it a pilebunker.

I unfortunately only had a Paladin force stave, and given my poor experience with power axes in the past I opted to keep everything as one piece and deal with the big, meaty claw on that side. The left hand's actually a little small from other angles, it's from the Mk3 sprue. Foreshortening just makes it look huge.

>>52966413

Depends how complicated they are.

I tend to partially asssemble mine, like leaving the bolters off my marines or shields off my fantasy models.

Huge models like Coven Throne should be painted in several sub-assemblies if you want to be able to reach all areas of the model.
>>
>>52966413
With any dude holding a gun in front of him with both hands, I'll usually glue everything but the front supporting arm. Dry-fit the arms, blu-tack them to get an idea of where they go, then glue the arm holding the gun grip on, while using the tacked supporting arm as a guide. Then I take the supporting arm away, prime the dude, paint him fully and paint the supporting arm separately. Then stick it together after. Why?

Because I hate knowing that there's un-painted bit on the chest that almost no-one will see, but I know. I know it's there. And it will haunt me for all eternity.

It should come as no surprise that I've painted a total of ten Fire Warriors in five weeks. But the rest of the time was spent assembling the rest of the force and playing some test games before I take it out on a tourney spin.
>>
>>52966697
I would live in fear of that model falling over.
>>
>>52966413
Depends on the model. My Knight is in about 10 pieces and will likely stay that way until it's fully painted (I intend on magnetizing its carapace and carapace weapon, the arms lock in on a rotating lock, and I magnetized the waist). Infantry with pistols get painted as a solid piece. Infantry with rifles get two pieces, the gun and everything else. Bikers are two piece, rider and bike.
The only exception is Devastators; I use the FW backpack-connected weapons, which are impractically fragile enough that I fear trying to keep them detached. So they get fully built before I even prime.

I haven't played since 5th Edition and am considering starting with space marines again.
All my models are horribly painted so I'll need to repaint them, but I'm wondering what scheme to go with.
I was thinking of Iron Hands, but they're quite dull, so I want to find a way to liven them up a little.
I tried these two schemes (admittedly with little variation).
Does anyone have any advice on livening up the Iron Hands colour scheme.

>>
>>52967198
Go nuts with weathering. Have chipped paint flaking off everywhere, edge highlight every single bullet hole. And of course, put some cyborg bits on them. Go tear up some Mechanicum kits for bits, grab joiners from space marine centurion weaponry and throw pipes and cables fucking everywhere.
Don't do all of that necessarily, but kitbashes are the best way to give Iron Hands some visual flavour.
>>
>>52967198
Is that supposed to be a light metallic, or white?
I don't think too much white would look good on them.
What makes Iron Hands look cool is all the metallics.
Both silver/steel ones and bronze ones.
That and the cogs and augmentations.
You'll want lots of cyborg arms, legs and heads.
>>
>>52965383
>trusting your minis structural integrity to cork
>even if pinned its still shit

Id rather have a secure plastic on plastic bond
>>
>>52965383
Why do people use cork bases? They never look good, unless you spend an inordinate amount of time and effort chopping it into shape, and mostly they just plop it on top of a cork plate with torn off edges. I don't get it.
>>
>>52967198
In addition to what the other anons said, you could go for a dark metallic black, not flat black. If you look at some of FW art and painted models, they made theit IH like that and it's much better in my opinion. The easiest way to do this is to use Vallejo Air Gunmetal, which gives a nice dark mettalic colour and is easy to wok with.
>>
Help. It's too humid where i live to use spray primer, is paint on primer acceptable and if so should I thin it before applying?
>>
>>52967369
This. I am slowly learning to base around my models after gluing them to the base, with plastic glue. I superglued some orks to bases with crackle paint on it and it's an absolute pain in the ass.
>>
>>52967442
>0 effort (perceived)

>>
>>52967495
How do you do metallic black? Dark metallic, and glaze over it with black?
>>
>>52967512
Vallejo Black primer is good, thin it just a little bit after shaking it well, and let it cure completely, i.e several hours (I leave it a day just to be sure) to make sure it's good. 2 coats are enough before you can start painting on it.
If you want to paint bright colours/white, use their grey primer. The white primer is shit.

I recently picked up a pot of Citadel's dry paint (Lucius Lilac) for highlighting my Emperor's Children. It's certainly useful for drybrushing, and does have a nice effect (not in pic, it's from months ago). However, does anyone have tips for using it effectively? While it does work, I feel like too much paint is getting spent on the paper or sponge I brush it off on to get it to the right level of paint. Or is that just how it is?
>>

Recently got a Monolith, and wanted to add old damage scars to it, Was thinking blast marks of missile impacts that failed to penetrate, which should be simple enough.

Yeah, me too.
Incidentially I recently was somebody being temporarily banned from a forum for posting the templates for Space Marine Droppods, that GW France made at one point.
I remember there even were events in the GW stores to come and build some of your own.

Kind of funny to see somebody being reprimanded for posting templates that GW published themselves for free and for personal use.

I'm relying more on their camo to show off their Veteran status then their gear, so besides a few purity seals here and there it'll mostly be bare.

back to the hobby after a few months haitus, I'm stripping my dudes and I think I'm going to go back to trying to get a brotherhood of darkness warband going again.

pic related was a WIP but I fucked it up because I was trying to paint yellow over some of the red runes to make him like the guy on the right. problem is, they looked like shit every time. what should I do about trying to paint small yellow lines over such a dark surface?
>>
>>52971184
if your confident in your brush work, stat with lines in grey, go over in white, then follow up in yellow, the layering will help them "pop" out and give em a slight glow, as well as not require the need for a billion layers

Buy a micron pen in yellow and then just use it to carefully draw in the lines.
>>
>>52971341
Nah, they're assuming that you're Meme-ing because there's no facial detail. Needs washes, then some highlighting and work on the detail.
>>
>>52971184
Use a pen
>>
>>52971341
/tg/ is indeed a toxic shithole at times because nobody even bothered to actually give you constructive criticism. if you're not baiting then you need some washes and highlights man, you have lots of flat colors going on there. you could put agrax earthshade on the gold parts then highlight back over the raised parts with a brighter gold, then eshin grey highlight the black plates like people often do in black power armor tutorials. the hair and the face need definition too, you could do a simple kislev flesh wash on the face which would improve it a lot. as for the white hair, a simple diluted black wash then going back over the raised parts with gray and then some white would help.

I bet you're the same asshole who's been posting those shitty fett marines in the last couple threads.
But if you're not, work on thinning your paints, milk consistency is what I heard here often. Use some washes, a thinner line for those high lights, and when you get to the face again, look up basic makeup tutorials, they're all about blending and highlighting to make faces more attractive/feminine, unless you're ok with tranny SOBs

They're not a chapter heavy on the dragon theme.
I'm undecided on who their founding chapter is, but they're supposed to be based on a planet that had only recently come into the more modern age, kind of like nocturne when vulkan first got there. the families are still big on family heraldry and heroic legends of ancestors, which has influenced the chapter. I kind of stole the idea from deathwatch. I'm not planning on playing, only painting, and I like to individualize each of my marines.

do you have a picture of your failed attempt?
Sounds like you might have been using too big a brush or something?
So just use a smaller one.
Sometimes when I try to do something super small and finnicky I take a toothpick, sharpen it, then let it quell in water for a minute or two and use that to apply tiny lines.
You can get really miniscule paint brushes in any artstore though. So if the problem you were having was with brushcontrol, while using something bigger, switching to a smaller size might help.

>Is AOS on a larger scale than 40K?
officially no. But since GW only produced superhuman stormcasts and khorny beefcakes the defacto scale of these minis is more around ~35mm. They are supposed to be big though. Since GW hasn't released no actual human sized models for AoS yet the jury is still out on that verdict.

Anyway, if you wanted to you could use the slaughterpriest models from the khorne faction as giants for any other generic 28mm skirmish.

How goes it WiP?? this is my first attempt so pls no bully :^)
I got my cultists,(you guys suggested to round out my proxy CSM Fruition Force 5) and SWA set in last week, and I just finished my 1st fully assembled guy. I had difficulty getting the autocannon to stay attached to a piece of sprue without using to much glue when I went to prime it.

What do you guys attach small bits to for priming? I see people on youtube using corks and pins but I currently have neither at this condo, anything that is usually around a house that will work well? Can I super glue the sprue to the bitz without it melting too bad like the plastic glue?

Also how can I make my tabards look better? I was mostly following the Duncan guide I think it was base with celestra grey, then drakenhoff nightshade, and then ulthuan grey but I feel like they look really eh. Should I shade them again?

Any thing else stand out I need to work on before I start painting my squad leader? I plan to make his crest have red stripes, didn't realize giving each guy a different color crest would make them look like power rangers until it was already too late but I'm happy with it.

Starting bikes for the first time. Seeing as I am running Blood Angels, it only seemed right that I add wings to it like some people do with other BA bikes. So I am converting parts from this Ravenwing Command Squad to a regular Space marine bike, kinda silly but wanted to challenge myself. Also I hate how static the bikes look on their bases so I am gonna try and make it look like the wheels are turning with the bike leaning.

This bike will be my Sargent so I will try and get it built and painted first before moving onto the others. If I like it, will see about maybe picking up a regular Ravenwing Bike Squadron to do the other two bikes.

Also I want to save the Apothecary bits from the Command Squad and use them to make a Bike for a Saguinary Priest. Idea is that the priest will be swerving around on the bike in appearance while chugging back some blood from his chalice drunk like.

First time doing anything beyond gapfilling/basic nurgle conversions with green stuff.

Got the basic shapes down over a frame, gonna let this cure and then define the shapes a little more, then let that cure, then put an extremely thin layer of green stuff "skin" over that and try to tear it up and make it look wounded.

Hopefully it turns out okay, this is the most ambitious conversion I've ever done.

Variation is excellent but you need some unifying elements. For example, if you're going with different colours try and keep the saturation of the colours similar and maybe give them matching crests and underbelly colours.
>>
>>52980073
Do them based on that guy, if you pull it off right it'll look fantastic.

Can always do your characters in different colors if you want to mix it up.

two things:
1. use a wash
2. never paint straight white or black, you start with a light grey and highlight it or a very dark grey and highlight it respectively.

overall: it's not horrible, cherish that picture, you'll love it in a couple of months.

Use paper clips to have little bits to attach pieces. I drill a hole in a part that will be glued (and therefore non visible) out some superglue in it, put the paper clip in it, and you have a nice piece that you can handle without touching. I normally cut a straightened clip in 2, to get 2 long enough bars that I can use.

Your biggest problem is that you actually highlighted with silver the wrong way. Basically xhat you did is pick a piece of the model, usually the end of a form, like the top of a flame, and painted it silver. What you should do is only apply paint to the edges, not the flatter areas.
The simplest example is on the assault canon. You're meant to catch the edged on those circles that hold the barrels, whereas you simple put some silver on the flat panels. You end up with highlights all over the place that look odd.

I made an example of what you should have done, with my big meaty fingers on my phone so it's not perfect.

Don't takr this the wrong way though, it is still some very good work, especially for a beginner, the brush control is good, so if you fix those highlights on this one (remember to angle you brush to catch the edged with the side of it, not the tip), and do the same for the others, they'll be lovely models.
>>
>>52974771
Yeah that was the plan. After anon recommended Victoria miniatures' heads that are copy pasted from the artwork, I'll use these instead of the originals. I just need to find something to cover the embles I can't cut.
>>
>>52980151
>>52980157
All I would suggest is to take your time more. It can be boring but it's best to build up green stuff in smaller layers, letting them partially or entirely cure between layers. This gives a more solid base to work off and therefore more control. I appreciate this can be really boring and slow the progress down but it does give better results.

Thanks for tips, was away from pc for a while. I honestly have no idea so I appreciate the criticisms. There's no local scene here and I haven't actually seen one of these models in over 10 years but I'd like to get a killteam or two together for me and my brother to play this summer.
Would the silvers look better if I was able to drybrush? I have a brush for it but my Sigmarite came in all fucked up and solid ( a couple of my paints didn't seem to survive shipping either) or can I still make it look good if I take my time and aim for the inside edges as you said?

Asking here, maybe that thread is better suited for it than the aos general:

Anyone with a good tutorial for painting flesheater courts? I can only find one long one thats like 7 years old and has no sounds, the GW short tip that can only make tt quality or other ones that look like shit (hurdur let me show you on 240p how I dip this ghoul in wash, doesn't it look great?).

I already have nightmares how much I'll have to paint once the new edition hits and chaos will maybe get better (lol) or atleast different units that will have to be used. Maybe it will take another edition before my main army is ready then.

Drybryshing silver over gold, especially o tiny edges, flat edges like that is a big no no. You'd end up with a botched result and silver all over the place.
Better to take your time (which is really everything there is about miniature painting, of you rush it, it'll look like shit), do it neatly and you'll be much more satisfied with the result.
Watch the tutorial again to see how Duncan does it, and off you go.
Those models are known to be annoying because of all the gold details that have to be highlighted, but it's what makes them so lovely.

Looks alright, fellow DAngel. What you also might work on is making your highlights smooth and continuous. As it stands I'm almost seeing morse code along your edges.

And, as an aside, do something with all those doors and hatches. Painting large wings, swords and other DA iconography is fairly simple and makes vehicles 1000% more interesting.

I'd leave it 'as is' for now. Yer' thick paints and spill-over from one part into another suggest that you need to put a lot of practice in before trying anything fancy.

>Since GW hasn't released no actual human sized models for AoS yet the jury is still out on that verdict.
Silver Tower has two regular humans - the Warpriest and Barbarian, and both of them are fairly large, only slightly smaller than the stormcast. They are oddities though.

Otherwise, the new dwarf models are the same size as the old Dwarfs, which confirms the scale is still the same, Stormcast are just huge.

First up, my Lieutenant with a bionic arm. I've posted this a few weeks ago and got some good feedback from anions. I've removed his left shoulder pad and raised the arm a little.

Another angle. I added some more rivets to the shoulder, for a more machine-like look. The shoulder itself is from the Tempestus Scions; it's the media-pack arm. And the bionic arm itself is from the Cadian command squad.

It's hard to capture in photos, but I feel that the model has a cruel, grim, determined look. He knows that he's about to burn some heretics or xenon alive, and he's looking forward to that though.

thanks :) 15mm, mostly Battlefront miniatures, one of that rusian company that makes the cheapies.

>>52984991
They are good enough for tabletop sure, you are puttin in the effort of painting unlike a lot of people.

Well you should work on your neatness of course, once you have your neatness down you can learn other techniques to make them look better, but just neatness is key.

You should work on your colour choices too, yellow and red can work together, but you need to also add in some neutral colours there to break it up, black and brown leather for example, belts and boots.

I don't know why your models are so shiny, are you using too much wash?

Otherwise, keep up the good fight dont be discouraged pait and paint and read and watch tutorials and practice.
>>
>>52985104
I put a finish on em and it was gloss :( but I'll hit em with a dull one once they dry.

Was going for that 2nd edition look, but yeah I agree, some neutral colors would help a lot!

Thanks! First painted figs I figure with an Ork army I'll get LOTS of practice.
>>
>>52984991
I made this same mistake a long time ago. It looks like you are using testors paint or something like that judging by the glazed appearance of the model. Only use specific acrylic paints like Citadel (my favorite), Vallejo, and army painter. The one compliment I can give you is that the ork skin looks good.

>>52984142

Oh I see, hey for first go it's good, looks better than my first attempts and i'm happy enough with my painting these days. It's all practice.

For plastic models don't worry about a coat at all, paint only really rubs off on metal figures. Keep on trying though, you'll see your improvement rapidly.

>>
>>52985351
No worries bud, also useful cause you can see it uses red and yellow, but with the netural colours it works better visually.

Concentrate on your touch ups, you won't be neat at first which is fine, but you can tidy up any mistake later, the basecoat is the most important part because it's what everything is built on.
