Tau have better long range vision than humans, and better hand eye coordination, but inferior reflexes. Moreover, they form a good gap bridge between Tau and Kroot. For this reason humans are used in 'fill' rolls in the Empire, or more often, as police and militia. This is because humans are VASTLY better suited for close quarters and urban fighting than the Tau, and aren't cannibal savages like the Kroot. Also many of the Tau's newest acquisitions are human worlds, and they like to have humans policing humans, as they find it works better and comes off less 'oppressive'.

As a result (and due to the fact they refuse to let humans fight the Imperium), Humans usually aren't on their front lines, more likely to be found defending outlying worlds from Orks or working as military police in secure sectors. If Tau military doctrine and engineering had a place for it, Humans would probably also be their go-to species for boarding enemy ships in void combat in order to provide close fire support for Kroot assault troops.

In a game? Depends on what rules that are agreed for them.
Seen people use them more or less as regular Imperial Guard, and others use them as substitute models for Fire Warriors.

i basically edited all the drives to be hyperwarp so FE, AE and crisis also get Hyperlanes, otherwise the fun ends when you research jump drives and the game becomes the regular clustefuck.

Space marines have a universal and absolute disdain for non-humans. Shit, most have absolute disdain for non-space marines period. Even the most scraggly, desperate and renegade marine would rather spit acid in the face of an alien than work with them. More pride in themselves than they know what to do with, which is why you only ever see them turn when magic or parasitic control are exercised. And even then that doesn't always stick because of how horribly broken they are, mentally.

As for why the tau don't copy them? Their technology is focused on robotics and artificial intelligence. Cheaper to mass-produce puretide engram chips and deal with the fact that it's going to make your pilots brain dead eventually than it is to work out what sort of magic is behind the enhanced human soldiers.

Are chaos weapons not xenos in origin? What manner of weapons do chaos marines use? It is directly addressed though. The CSM maintain their own equipment from when they fell from the Imperium by scavenging things from themselves and loyalist marines. They also have their own forge worlds ran by Dark Mechanicus who make their ammunition, maintain their equipment and make new machines with daemons in them in exchange for favors and slaves. the luckier ones get some primo toys from their patron gods. This is common knowledge.

Gene seeds are hard to extract and you only get a few organs from the dead. Implanting them into a space marine is such a closely guarded secret, so only the chapters know how to do it properly. Even then plenty of initiates reject the organs and die.

My first exposure to Tau was DoW Dark Crusade and I loved them especially visually, but at some point they're just like any appleproduct: Uniformly clean, expressionless, get the job done but really without character.

Guard is more like a costum tower PC: Sure there's prebuilds, but you can mess with every single bit until it's just what you want from it and although it looks unclean and blocky (in some cases just too much LEDs), it's your powerhouse and yours alone.

I've always imagined the Tau Empire as a twisted, Orwellian version of the Federation from Star Trek. On the surface it's great. The average civilian of pretty much most races get good education, good healthcare, all their needs and many of their wants are taken care of. Thinking of starting a Tau army. What should I get other than the start collecting box? My LGS has a pretty small group and nobody plays them, mostly Marines, so I want to change things up

In Taros campaign it was stated that air caste pilots are better than imperial navy pilots but navy had the experience to even the odds. Also just like with the tau tech, the whole fire caste is selectively breeded to be bigger, stronger, faster and generally better.
