I have a dilemma. I have bought 2 Spire of Dawn boxes so I could split the cost with aelves player some time ago. Skavens are not my favourite AoS faction but they were cheap as fuck and I hoped for some skaven releases.
With 8e hitting the stage soon I'm not sure what should I do. Death Watch is basically confirmed af a faction in 8e starter set (it's not but we saw the pic on gw site and teaser) so I could mix it with nurgle daemons and use this a a shared army for both AoS and 40k. I like their aesthetic and fluff in AoS but my 40k favourite faction are Tau.
Right now I'm torn between
- Buy a start collecting for skavens to build a cannon and bell and sell monks then spend the rest of money on small tau army (I will end up with "meh army" and "I love it army")
- Sell rats and buy 2 start collecting of nurgle daemons and a half of 40k starter set so I will end up with "ok army" usable in both games

I want to play small games in both systems (1k pts) so I know I will not go into huge armies in any way

My primary hope for GHB 2.0 is to make magic more interesting. At the very least, giving the Grand Alliances a pool of spells their wizards can draw from. Only having 3~ spells per wizard, most of which being pretty dull, is disappointing.

I'd also like for them to modify the Rule of One in Pitched that prevents you from casting more than one type of spell per round. I would like it to instead be changed that you can only cast one kind of spell on a singular unit one per game. IE, you can only cast Mystic Shield once on a single friendly unit.

I've been following the teasers over on the warhammer community site and so far it's looking like 8th 40K is going to be an improved copy of AOS in almost every way. So much so that you could probably read the warscrolls for your 40K units and play 8th without even reading the rules so long as you know the rules for AOS.

I hope that AOS 2nd will incorporate the improvements they are making to 8th.

I want to see the new scrolls first but I will probably be jumping into an elder army once it drops.

Also AoS is supposed to be the intro game while 40k is it's more complicated cousin so I doubt they'll fold all the new rules into AoS.

On principle I don't mind double turns, plenty of games have double turns. My problem is it uses Games Workshops oldest and most favourite resolution mechanic: the random dice off.

If initiative was based on something, a stat your general has, the size of your army, the scenario being played, etc, etc.

Literally anything is better than just being a random roll off.

My dudes are a Blood Knight-heavy soulblight list converted from Bretonnian and Empire cavalry with spooky bits liberally scattered here and there.

The theme is a mortal templar order of Sigmar who, for flaws of character and virtue, believed themselves to be deemed unworthy of being taken for the Stormhosts as they lay dying and thus denied eternal life. Salvation came in the form of a pact with the servants of Nagash, who granted them the strength and immortality they so coveted, but at a terrible cost.

It's inspired very heavily by (mainly German) Renaissance woodcut art like pic related, particularly the bleakness and the juxtaposition of horrific and chivalry imagery against a bleak landscape.

Green's my favorite color, so I wanted my Ironjawz wear bright green armor. Their skin colors range from pale white to charcoal gray to black. I want to base their iconography and the tattoos/warpaints (I've left a few Brutes without shoulder pads specifically to paint tattoos) to be based on the Celts.

The Savage Orruks I'm making tend to follow them around from place to place, often mucking up their (poorly-planned) battle strategies, but always serving to make a good fight. A lot of them loot armor from the Ironjawz, too, so there's a tiny bit of communication between the two clans.

I play Seraphon. But not the new fluff seraphon, the old stuff, where they are actually lizards and not fucking memories. They escapes the death of the old world in a space ship/temple and now float around. No slann involved, and a new breed of skink was spawned (because they have spawning pools on the ship) that can control all the old god tech and fly it.

Main influences are things like stargate, the cuotl from rise of legends, and anything where there is a lot of high tech thats made out of stone, or looks like it.

I like to have some logic behind my dudes. For example my wanderer, after fleeing Ghyran and telling Alarielle to kindly eff herself got "cursed" by her in return to always be reborn whenever they die until they manage to spread enough forrests/waystones in the realm of metal.

Starting my Barak-Mhornar test model. Just got a basecoat on it right now, so nothing worth posting.

I am not using the blue they suggested though, I am using Kantor Blue instead. After a Nuln Oil wash, it more or less looks identical. I don't even know why they suggested to go with Stegadon Scale Green to begin with. If I had to guess, I would say it is because it is easier to highlight, although Kantor Blue fits the shade they use in the skyport pictures earlier in the book.

I have noticed that most grown men do not play space marines in 40k, rather grew out of them at an early age and moved on to the Imperial guard (a much more interesting faction).

So my question is, since Stormcast are almost exclusively played by children (and if you play them, you are a child or man-child), at what age do you think people will grow out of them and move on to a proper faction?

Well you can't do pure Troggoth as they don't actually have a Battleline. However, an army with a Troggoth core might work pretty well if you have some good fast units to capture objectives and/or threaten shooty enemies. Fellwater Troggoths look especially hard to shift and have nice synergy with the Hag, but yes, it all seems very similar to Gutbusters/Beastclaws who also have very low model counts.

I roll Gnarlroot Wargrove as a Sylvaneth player and heavily use the Sisters of the Thorn's save modifier spell on Alarielle, Drycha, Treelord variants, melee Kurnoth variants, and Dryads.

I'm not active in competition or anything, but it's a fierce list.

Sorry I don't know much about your Wood Elves, but if the Sisters of the Thorn are still viable (speedy, good for objective grabbing), I don't see why not. Put a Celestial Hurricanum with them for some added punch maybe?

The Sisters would be the perfect help for your Dryads shielding all those archers. The Treekin should be able to hold up on their own. The meat of your army is in ranged so I'd keep that Shield of Thorns on your Dryads, get another wizard for Mystic Shield giving your Dryads a 3+ re-rollable save, 2+ if in cover.

Points-wise, if you need another wizard, Starpriest is good, but if you're keeping with fluff, get a Branchwraith or Branchwych, both of those are 100 points.

I like decorating my bases. Sure, it may look a little funny to have a grass base in the desert or desert base on a snow mat, but I don't always know what I'm playing on and I like the way it looks for my models.

Some events require the bases to be in a finished state.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend you picking up an army that doesn't have a battletome currently.

Some of the units are good, but they really do feel dated when up against the newer armies with synergies between units.

Depends. Do you intend on playing WHFB at all?

If not, then it is up to you really. If they don't update the dispossessed army at all, then you can have an entire army on square bases and it will look fine, but if they DO, then things could start to look weird.

Also, some people may not like playing against square bases. We call these people "cunts", but the less you give them to sperg about the better.

You are lucky, Waywatchers and War Hawks are some of the better Wood Elf units. Glade guard are ok if you have a big unit, since their ability lets them do a lot of damage to a single enemy unit before they can attack back.

Otherwise, Sisters of the Thorn are a strong unit. If you have some Eternal Guard, buffing them with Sisters of the Thorn and Mystic Shield basically turns them into an immovable object.

Gunhaulers would be an instant take in my opinion if they were able to use their Bomb Racks when they charged as well as when the enemy charges them.

I can't see why they didn't do that. It wouldn't make them OP, since their actual attacks are kinda shitty, and it fits the model concept well.

Switched up my list a bit. Went for Barak Mhornar. Endrinmaster and Khemist rock up in the Ironclad with the Skywardens and get an early charge in, taking advantage of the command ability, and hopefully causing a lot of damage with buffed skypikes and earbuster effect on battleshock. Navigator and another unit sit at the back to buff speed, riggers heal ship, ironsky command keeps heroes alive.

Quick newbie question about Kharadron and Allegiances.

You can only claim an allegiance if all units in your army have the same keyword for it, right? So if all of them are "Kharadron Overlords", you can claim their allegiance, but if you include some other dwarfs for example, you can only claim allegiance Order.

Now, the Battletome states that to pick an Artycle, Amendment, and Footnote for an Army that is not from one of the 6 official Skyports, you need to have Allegiance Kharadron Overlords.

Does that mean that if you decide to come up with your own Skyport, you can either only take Kharadron units in your army, while being completely locked out of all other Order units, or you take some other units, but basically don't have any of the army defining Kharadron rules?

Technically, that is correct. A Soulblight allegiance is not a Death allegiance, so should not have access to their rules.

In practice, nobody seems to care about it, since GW has never clarified that is how it works, despite it technically being the rules as written, so you should be fine to use both.

I would stick it on the the Khemist. He has so many shots, he is pretty much guaranteed to get one through.
That way, he can just sit with an Arkanaut Company, buff their melee weapons when they are in combat, then shoot at the enemy in the shooting phase to take full advantage of the battleshock.

I sure hope you have a solution on how you are going to make those Mortars.
Otherwise, it seems like a good all-round list that should fit into most scenarios well.

I think it may be worth changing one of the Autotinkerers with the Earbuster to force some battleshock tests though, since the Khemists wont be near enough the boats to use them every turn.

Any glaring weaknesses to this list? My army is based on fyreslayers who've set up a lodge in the realm of life as the local sylvaneth keep revealing buried ur gold when they uproot and come to life. Its 1020 points but my local FLGS is pretty chill about that considering this won't be competitive for tournaments. Battlesmith has that ironbark artifact as it's the only one he can have (+1 to wound)

You melee with the drop alpha strike from a frigate with riggers instead of wardens. 6 Riggers with the Khemist buff on their chainsaws do 13 3+/2+ -2 D3 attacks. Its like 16-17 damage with the reroll plus another 7 from their rivet guns with zon buff.
