It's actually easy to understand how/why. It's the faction where you can have proper fun, where for it to be good, it has to be fun.
The others can quickly turn into writing solemn warrior/smug wizard #8417. They require a lot more actual effort to pull off WELL, although they are the easiest to write at all. As I said, you can make them fairly easy, but writing them well requires effort and talent. There'sa reason Tarkus is so appreciated. He's a simple concept, the typical space marine. But he's done well, and that's a lot harder to do.

People like Stubbs because if he won the Karuva campaign, he did so after taking over a severely depleted Guard while under siege from the Sisters, Marines, Eldar, Necrons, Orkz, Tau, Dark Eldar, and Chaos. The normal Guard strategy is to throw men at the problem, but we're explicitly told most of the men are already dead.

The Baneblades thing is just funny, because 100 Baneblades appearing at all in the context of the game mechanics is insanity. Pluasible with a mod, but otherwise so overkill that if he'd kept the stupid things, he'd never lose. Not so crazy in context of the universe - but players don't get hands on with the universe, they understand that statement in relation to the game. It's like if the Eldar said, "We don't have the Avatar of Khaine right now, we already summoned him to a hundred other territories!"

If Stubbs didn't win, then he's just the guy who finished losing the battle of Kauruva.

And I like Gorgutz far more; Because the mother fucker is everything an Ork should be. He is a loud, brutish, stompy bully thats brutally kunnin. At the beginning of the game, he is almost a joke. He stomps those Tau flat, steals their dakka, and blows the Spikey boys to oblivion.


After thousands upon thousands of years of waiting, and despite the schemes and strategies of intellectually superior and better prepared enemies, all of their best efforts are ruined by one green barbarian hell bent on havin' a roight good time. It's really not. Go find any description of the HFY trope, HFY is all about 'hurr humans breathe rocket fuel n shit'.

If you think DoW2 > DoW, you definitely won't because for the majority of time, it is a game built as a sequel to DoW.

First off, that entire situation was engineered by Vect and caught the nobility of Commoragh off guard.
Secondly, the Nobility had no desire to just kill the marines. They wanted to fucking capture them for their slave arenas. If they wanted to just destroy them, the whole mess would have been a lot quicker.
Thirdly, the efforts of the Nobility were covertly sabotaged by Vect so that he could rise into the supreme overlord of Commoragh.
Fourthly, the only reason the marines escaped from Commoragh was because once they had served their purpose, as in, fuck over the nobility, Vect had no further use for them and basically let them go.

Ok guys, so I am really on the fence about DoW 3.
I think I could have fun with it, even though I'm not a MOBA guy, and I really want to see the story. I've looked at varying opinions about what is good and what isn't, and what I take away is that while it is a bit disappointing, it is by no means a bad game.

I guess my question is, is it worth it?

How the fuck do you even play Soulstorm? Its absolutely boring, what incentive do i have to do anything apart from rush the enemy hq with my honor guard? The buildings and points don't get saved like in Dark Crusade, im a newb i admit but i just don't get it. It could be a pain to fortify in DC, capturing points and getting them up to level 2 outposts, but it was worth it. In Soulstorm its just annoying, i don't feel like i need to build anything apart from a barracks and rush. Am i missing something?

I thought Dark Crusade's persistent buildings was a completely dogshit feature. It just made me want to pen the AI opponent in their base and hold off on finishing them off while I built a shit ton of defensive structures. Then when an enemy attacks in future turns, they are instantly buttfucked by my turrets and by the units coming from my barracks/factories right outside their base. It made defensive battles completely trivial.

Soulstorm at least had the right idea by removing most persistent structures, but again, defensive battles are usually too easy because you can still rush the AI base with garissoned troops.

Honestly I think the campaign skirmishes were bad in both games, and that the only enjoyable maps were the two Tau strongholds. Everything else was either dull or too easy. If they'd gone with a simpler campaign map where everywhere was a tough stronghold type mission it would have played better.

The only enjoyable maps in DC were the Strongholds and maps like Pavonis that give you some kind of benefit, because there was always something interesting to do, gather servitors, or use energy, as retarded as that soudns, without wargear, or the prospect of honor guard all the other maps were just single player skirmish maps. They could have made it more linear, by giving you objectives, basically every map was a tiny campaign in itself. The wargear is really cool but to me, the best DoW game will always be the first, followed by Winter Assault.

Also a gripe i have with Soulstorm is, that the Alpha legion is just a regular Chaos legion despite the Alpha Legion being so unique, the Chaos Lord is dumb as fuck, but Alpha were known to be pretty fucking smart. It would also might be cool if they did a DoW game without the fucking blood ravens, any other chapter would do.

My personal theory on why the alpha legion acted like dumbfucks in DoW vanilla and Soulstorm is that they deliberately rounded up all the utter spastics in the legion and sent them out to do as much damage as possible.
Sindri was either the only one in on the plan, or got wind of it and used them to his advantage, which was why he wasn't an utter retard

Personally i disliked the campaigns in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, i liked the strongholds(obviously), but everything else to me just felt like boring filler generic skirmishes against the AI, it was just dull and boring and at some point it felt like a chore to play the campaign just to make a path to the strongholds.

I'd rather have scripted linear campaigns in all honesty and i would say in the DoW series my favorite campaigns are the ones from DoW 2 and Chaos Rising, specifically, Chaos Rising's campaign is awesome. DoW 2 suffers from a similar thing to DC and SS imo, there are a lot of missions that are just boring filler sidequests.

I felt the opposite. Every time I got to a stronghold, I groaned, because nearly all of them are a long series of heavily defended points, so all you can really do is turtle up to a full strength army of your most powerful units, and then attack, taking away the significance of map control, resource management, and tech path planning. Strongholds just felt like big grinds, while every other map was just a straightforward match, except with honour guards and commander upgrades to make things more interesting.
