So me and a few pals are getting together for a 5e DND game, I was wondering if there are any mistakes I should avoid seeing as its my first time.

Truly, the first post is best post

Expecting the game to play as you anticipate it will.

>Contrarian shitposters ctrl-F'ing just to be the first to whine about people playing the game that triggers them
You guys need to just fuck off already.

Before anything happens, talk things through with your group. Your expectations, what you want out of a game like this, your preferences in terms of tone and content.
It's a lot better to figure out differences beforehand than stumble across them in play, since you have time to figure out a compromise, and it gives the GM ideas for how to best work with you all as a group.
In general, keep an open mind, focus on having fun but keep the fun of the other players and GM in mind too. You're all there to enjoy yourselves, if someone isn't something is going wrong.

I mean, d&d isn't a perfect system, but it's easy enough to learn, it works, and there's a community for it. 5e is an excellent system for first timers, or people that aren't autistic.

I would recomend running a pre made game the first time and then try going off the rails. I'm assuming this is your first TTRPG because this is your first time and its D&D.

Sorry, not OP just retarded

5e is far from excellent for beginners. It is merely (barely) functional.
The only actual advantage it has is a history of successful marketing and the resulting size of its playerbase.

Homebrewing.
5e is literally perfect, do NOT fucking bring your retarded imba """"homebrew""" to it.
Same appliesto UA.
