Part of the 40k charm is the gritty, dark setting. The photorealistic graphics of the previous games helped to bring this out. This includes the completely idiotic somersaulting terminator angelos and many of the other exaggerated animations that are typical of a MOBA. Both the graphics and animations of this game were terribly designed.

It is terrible. Gabriel Angelos has been with us since the game came out and they just replace him with a generic shitty voice actor. This ties in with the immersion thing mentioned before.

This is the most important part - They attempted to bring out the best of both DOW1 and DOW2, but the thing is - DOW1 and DOW2 were on opposite ends of the RTS spectrum. DOW1 was a more conventional macro-heavy RTS, while DOW2 was a non-traditional, micro-heavy RTS with a strong unit preservation element to it. Trying to make a game with aspects of both is not possible without stripping away the many mutually incompatible elements of both. I played the beta and it was just pure grind, there was some potential for good micromanagement, but it was mostly blob-throwing.

This is where I see the MOBA influence. You have elite units that can absolutely smoke regular infantry. The infantry are bordering on fodder. Heroes were strong in DOW1 and DOW2, but there were few examples of an ability insta-gibbing half an army with an ability.

>No built-in unit preservation mechanic
In DOW1 you had morale, which would cause your units to lose combat ability but be able to escape combat faster, DOW2 had retreat. In this game there isn't really a built in unit preservation mechanic (and in many cases little economic incentive). With the many forms of slow or disruption (or awful pathing), often trying to retreat a unit is pointless.

Art design ruining immersion is subjective, i'll give you that, but still going to say you're retarded if you think there's anything 'immersion ruining' about it.
Voice acting...yeah can't say much there except there's some kind of VA Strike that fucked them over.
Dumbed down grind based gameplay is 'i am bad at dow3' and I can guess how fuckawful your win rate was in the beta.
Elites are not too strong, although i'm willing to bet this is 'i played online and the other guy raped me, must be because his shit was op'.
Unit preservation is important because reinforcing is, unlike previous games, cheaper per-unit than just buying a new unit. Keeping units alive is both possible and important. Unless, again, you're shit at the game.
Single game mode is supposedly going to be fixed but honestly it's a pretty good game mode since it gives early game, mid-game and late-game all a purpose.

I am a mid-high level DOW2 player so I have a decent grasp of RTS micro and macro. The only time I lost was against 3 people who were clearly a pre-made because of their excellent coordination. Even then, I single-handedly managed to make the game last about 20 minutes longer than it should have, just by throwing meat in the grinder, even when it became clear we were gonna lose.

He's right about slowing and disruption making it impossible at times though. There've been a couple times in a campaign where I tried to save a unit, but they had a slow effect on them, and died before they got anyway. Would have been better just to have them fight to the death.

He maybe wasn't clear, so allow me to rephrase from personal experience: DoW 3 is easy.

Easy to understand, easy to master, somewhat difficult to play well because nothing is automated and reinforcing or retreating is a nightmare, but incredibly shallow. The absence of depth of any kind is what people call 'grind based gameplay'.

DoW 3 is the shallowest RTS I have played the past ten years. There is few units, most of them with one obvious ability to use in one obvious situation. Base building is a joke. The tech tree is a joke. Most of the time, you launch a blob of units toward the blob of unit of your opponent, use three abilities you need to time correctly, and the fight is over. Total amount of depth: 0. Total amount of thinking: 0.

Eh, it's fine as long as you don't play against halfway competent Space Marines. They will absolutely steamroll everything, unless you have a proper team or a guild on your side.
The other factions are quite balanced actually, and it's fun to play against the others, but LSM really get all they toys since their players are usually comically bad at the game. But they whine the most in the forum, and are probably the biggest part of the playerbase, so they get a lot of attention from the devs. This results in LSM being extremely strong if played properly.
Meanwhile, my Dark Reaper has precisely two weapon options, my shoota boy has about three: a shoota, a big shoota and a rokkit launcher. Only my Havoc has more options, since CSM were there since the start of the game, but still.
