I wouldn't be surprised if those were his actual teeth, come to think of it. Look at his eyes - they're RIGHT up against his mask. I don't think there'd be enough room for his mouth if those weren't his actual teeth.

He was horribly burned by the flames of Asuryan when he entered them. Morathi had the armour of midnight crafted for him, it's enchanted and keeps him alive. He wears the gold mask to hide his horrifically burned face.

The gold mask is actually because of his model. He used to have his face showing, but his model aged badly and they never made a new one, so instead of having his hilariously ugly face in the End Times they painted it gold and said it was a mask.

In art between that model and End Times he was portrayed with an open-face helmet but full of shadow with glowing eyes instead of a face or mask showing. This was easy to convert using the Dreadlord on black dragon plastic kit, but for some retarded reason GW insisted on continuing to use his old model even in the End Times, so the End Times art also had to be of his crappy old model instead of the much cooler newer art.
