I've been running a long term worldbuilding project which is coming up on its final update. One player has set up a McGuffin that his civilization has been searching for. Over many years he has found eight books required to find the McGuffin with the set finally being completed last turn. This turn he will have what he wanted.
One problem, nobody knows what it does. The player specifically said that his nation lost it so long ago they don't even know why the thing is important other than that it was made by the wizard who founded the nation. I still have no idea what this thing does. I joked with him that maybe it just warms up coffee or something like that, which was well received, so I'm open to troll responses. Any good ideas?

The McGuffin is a deck of cards. This Deck is divided into two parts, the first it's able to foresee the entire fate of the world, but it needs to be "calibrated" to a very specific position in order to be able to foresee your upcoming events for example, or to foresee your next events and not like what will happen to you 500 years from now (Rotting) The second Part of the deck is made of a different set of cards, able to "manipolate" the course of the events if positionated in certain ways. (Put a card in a certain way and you'll discover that the lake of the realm next to yours evaporated in a night,

The deck Was retrieved as only one, big mixed deck, and most cards are badly damaged by time, but still somewhat readable with some effort.

The rest is up to you.

It is a truly advanced and irreplacable magical item imbued with literally thousands of runes and enchantments in a specific configuration that allows it to open the most heavily warded door in the world -- specifically the ancient vault of the wizard-lord.

Of course, the royals long ago lost hope of ever opening it and dug a hole down to the top and blasted a hole through the roof to create an alternate entrance.

It's a chemical equation for gunpowder.
Do you want that in your setting?

Or if you already have firearms, then it's a crop booster. It will make food in the region grow at a rate beyond anything seen before. Carrots as big as a car, and taking only 3 days to grow to full size. The downside, is that people will soon lose their drive to farm and hunt.....thus leading to sloth, and making your civ a big target for other nations.

Its a Nuke

it's a teaset. the teaset has cups for each player, and has perfectly preserved, pungent smelling tea.Preparing and drinking tea from the tea set projects the players into an alternate setting. modern, ancient, etc, your players (whom hopefully enjoy lighthearted roleplay) will be forced to survive in this setting and need to find a means of transporting themselves back.
Consider it an intermission, while they're there will they take their time and invest in their current selves? as PCs how much trouble could they PCs, how much trouble could they possibly get into? have fun with it, perhaps it's the school that's training ninja's to take PCs out on dates to assassinate them (NO NINJA DOUBLE CROSS IS COMPLETE UNLESS THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE!)

either case, good luck

Effectively a codable computer for the universe made of cards. Interesting idea.

A good possibility.

We have a more difficult and complex gunpowder recipe that is only known by one nation and requires material that can only be supplied by one other nation who they are on good terms with. I don't mind having low-level gunpowder like arquebuses and bombard cannons, but we already have those.
The crop booster might work. I'll have to review a few things.

Like a real one or some kind of magical spell that functions as a nuke? It would have to be multiple use to be any good considering the setting has other spells and beings that rival a nuke in destructive power.

While that is an interesting idea, I don't have time to implement it.
It is very funny to think of their national leaders sitting down for tea though, especially considering there's a bitter war going on with three of them right now.
In this room we have a giant fishman with necromancy gear, the Doge of totally not Venice, Grumpy Buda with a sword and DBZ powers, a completely generic tiefling-looking King with the most powerful wizard in the world and some kind of demonic ghost magically concealed behind him, a large living crystal with several arms and legs wearing a t-shirt, a blue skinned human, a half dragon, the goddess of death war and trickery, and an anthropomorphic horse that is totally not Hitler.

It's just an old looking stone totem, but it's possessed by this super ancient "entity". That entity was controlling the wizard and other prominent members of the kingdom to enact some arcane plan, but at some point someone figured out what was happening and tried to get rid of the fucker for good.

But you don't know that. It lies and claims to be an ancient helper spirit that gives advice. This advice is calculated to appeal to you perfectly and seem like a super good idea, but in reality that's how the entity deceives and manipulates people on a grand scale. Now that it's been found, presumably it will continue to do whatever it was doing before.

You say there's a war going on, maybe that will be the focus it's scheming.

A powerful artifact which causes its bearer to lose it and then forget what it does, but be sure it was important.

It's a small intricately Carved Pillar like statuette. Upon it is a series of letters and numbers which correspond to the 8 books words etc. Upon reading the words you'll cast a spell that activates the "Pillar Aesos"

Once activated the Pillar is said to have the Caster and "their blood" Ascend and become Eternity...what this means is a question in of itself

You become an imutable law upon the univerce, you exist through space and time and can experience all things, yet you can never directly touch, only living through the experiences of those within existence

>le funny randumz PCs xD
critical role was a mistake.

It's a diorama of the continent with a sufficiently vague "operators manual". The pieces include figures which represent various races & ethnic groups, prominent geographical features, long settled cities, and ancient monuments & structures plus allegorical figures for concepts like peace, fertility, weather, health, etc.

Think of it as very detailed Lego set.

Setting the diorama up and manipulating all the pieces correctly produces TRENDS and TENDENCIES rather than imposing results. Your setting's 3 way war wouldn't suddenly end, for example, but the nations involved would be more become open to negotiation and compromise thus ending the war sooner and resulting in less desire for revenge.

Similarly, a plague wouldn't be stopped or prevented. It's effects and scope would lessened instead. Extreme weather events would be smaller and last for shorter periods. Harvests wouldn't all be bountiful, but crop failures wouldn't be as devastating. Sectarian violence would still occur, but with less frequency and involving smaller numbers. You should get the picture.

Very very slowly a placid and stagnant Golden Age will encompass the continent. That's why the McGuffin was purposely lost in the 1st place. Over the centuries the diorama was set up and operating, more and more people became "fat, dumb & happy" until civilization came close to collapsing.
