Pathfinder General /pfg/

How do we fix rougarou and make them not suck? At-will wolf shape back and forth?
Would you ever play a naiad? They're an okay fey race!
Are yaddithians a good wizard race or are they overrated and meh?

>>
>>52915679

Alright, so I'm new to Pf, but pretty well-versed in 3.5. A lot of big stuff stayed the same, but a lot of nuances changed. The game i was asked to play in is heavily houseruled: for example, he's using a truncated feat list that helps lessen feat tax on martial characters (found here http://michaeliantorno.com/feat-taxes-in-pathfinder/) Here's my character concept: A make Froglok (custom anthro frog person) ninja traveling with his two ninja brothers and getting into standard high fantasy adventures. I plan on maximizing sneak attack damage by denying DEX bonus (feinting mostly).

If the 9 allowable custom races, I chose Froglok because they get a whopping +6 DEX, along with bonuses to climbing and acrobatics. Fantastic for dex builds.

I'm going with Alchemist (Vivesectionist) because I like the options more than the unchained rogue, and on recommendation from you guys the other day. I'm fluffing extracts and mutagens as ninja arts.

And because my DM is batshit insane, he's allowing me to use Iaijutsu Focus from 3.0 Oriental Adventures. He was the one who brought it up, and I'm not going to argue over me getting extra sneak attack damage.

The feats I wanted to take were Quick Draw (bad, but he said I would have to take it to use Iaijutsu. Fair enough), Improved Initiative (obvious reasons) and Deft Maneuvers (which combines Improved Trip, Improved Disarm, Improved Dirty Trick, Improved Feint, Improved Reposition, Improved Steal into one feat)

I guess there could be a better way to do this kind of build, and I could always dip fighter, but this is what I came up with so far. With only one feat, I was a little worried, about being effective right off the bat, and I could stick with what I've got, or look for alternatives.

Yes. Unless it's a scroll or potion (or something mechanically identical) any prerequisite you fail out on is just a +5 to the DC you have to hit.

also, I recommend picking up a Golem manual. Technically, they cover the cost of all the golem's enchantments and construction fees - you just have to provide the raw materials (such as the overwhelmingly large block of pure iron you need for an iron golem

>A shitty Magus Archetype that gives a Wolf Companion and doesn't actually change the class from being Int-based, making it entirely useless for Rougarou but potentially an entertaining memebuild option for other races

there, I gave you the Rougarou section of the supplement slated to come out in 2021 all about obscure races that Paizo didn't give a fuck about.
>>
>>52917049

Well, you'll probably do alright. Might not pin your hopes on maneuvers, though-you're a 3/4 BAB class, so you're already at a disadvantage when it comes to beating CMD.
>>
>>52917064
>>52917115
Not so - you can ignore the SPELLS for +5 DC, but not the minimum caster level. You MUST meet the caster level requirement for any magical item creation.
>>
>>52916617
>>52916802
The reality is that weebs pirate all of their books because they're cynical and tech-savvy.

Furries on the other hand, have fueled an entire alternate porn industry to satisfy their bizarre and incomprehensible fetishes. Paizo would be insane to not want that furfag money, because furfags are also buyfags and comissionfags.
>>
>>52917187
Furfags can rot
>>
Are gnolls furry?

Is Greta a furry?

Aren't Kitsune technically furry too?
>>
>>52917049
>frog
>ninja
But where are the teenage and mutant parts?!

>feinting

Feinting actually kind of sucks, because you have to burn actions on it repeatedly. The only good way to sneak attack in combat is to flank them (there are a bunch of things that enhance flanking, let you flank from different directions, etc), or use the Shatter Defenses feat, which lets you treat shaken, frightened, or panicked opponents as flat-footed when you hit them.

Note that while Shatter Defenses requires the enemy be affected by fear, it doesn't have to be fear caused by YOU. This makes for an excellent combo with any party member who gets Power Attack and Cornugon Smash, since they can start chopping through enemies and leaving them shaken/frightened and you can follow after and sneak attack them to death.

>Deft Maneuvers

One thing to keep in mind here is that 90% of the time, Dirty Trick is the best combat maneuver to focus on. It can give multi-round penalties, it doesn't depend on the enemy having a specific number of legs or using equipment, etc.

For more damage, look at the Piranha Strike feat, which is basically Power Attack for Dex builds.

>dip fighter

Don't do that. If you have to dip anything, use Vigilante, which can get you the vast majority of Fighter benefits and a lot more abilities besides, or Slayer, which is basically a fighter-rogue in one class.

Well, he is mostly teenaged, probably in his late twenties by human standards, but about 13 actual years.

Do the Improved combat feats not allow you to use a move action to perform the maneuver? With my high burst damage (with a Katana, it should be 1d8+4d6+STR at level 1) I should be able to kill things fast enough.

I'll look into those feat suggestions. One of my "brothers" will be a Minotaur with a gigantic weapon of some kind, so he can be the one to set them up with fear and whatnot.

Notice the "immediately following". Caster level is NOT a prerequisite, it just sets the base DC. You can actually make an item at any caster level if you can make the DC.

>>
>>52917382
Burning a move action every round becomes a huge problem as soon as you have iterative attacks, because to attack multiple times you need to use a full-round action. Note that sneak attack applies to EVERY qualifying attack you make, not just 1/round or whatever.

>>52917416
I see. Maybe there's a 3.5 option I can use that gives me a combat maneuver as part of a move action or use teamwork feats (which we were already toying around with). But so far what I'm getting is that I should always count on combat maneuvers and look at a few other options, but at least the basic build and idea is solid.

Generally, dirty trick will always be useful (in part because it was written after the problems with the others became more obvious), but most of the other combat maneuvers have a lot of problems. Enemies with large sizes/multiple legs get bonuses vs trip (and that's most of them, at higher levels), enemies without weapons can't be disarmed, enemies with large sizes/extra limbs get bonuses vs grapple... You get the idea.
>>
>>52918066
IMO, Sword Saint would be better if Iaijutsu Strike wasn't attached to Challenge. Either making it so you have to start the turn unthreatened and with your weapon sheathed, or once per encounter, or just about anything is better IMO.

>>52918113
A fact I've been realizing, and as a result I've been pruning a lot of pointless races from my setting. Honestly it's been great, it's way easier to build cultural differences and such when you're not trying to come up with a culture for any humanoid with an int of 7+. Currently I'm down to Humans, Elves, Orcs, Gnomes, Kobolds, and Troglodytes.
The more standard-issue races you can trim from your setting, the better the setting is likely going to be. Keeping all the base races makes every world feel like a LotR ripoff, and allowing any balanced race the players ask for makes any world feel like some senseless kitchen sink.
>>
>>52918113
Even more of the core races are just kinda there.
"Sanos forest has gnomes in it, I guess. Maybe if you go there we're put a gnome NPC into the game, but otherwise, fuck it."
>>
So I read that you're supposed to multi-class after reaching level 5 in gunslinger.
Why is this?
What class should you multiclass into to stay effective until about level 8-9?
>>
>>52918201
IMO, it's easier to make Gnomes interesting than it is to make Dwarves interesting. Gnomes are portrayed as anything from mischievous pseudo-hobbits to tinkers to NOT!Faeries, whereas pretty much all Dwarves in all settings are hardly anything more than Tolkien Dwarves with the serial numbers filed off.
>>
>>52917876

Of course we will! Through greentext!
>>
>>52918223
Personally I find gnomes to be kender-lite.
No one knows how to play the little shits without being little shits.
>>
>>52918260

>Join a campaign
>Someone's playing a Gnome
>They put on the Gnome voice

[LEAVE GAME]
>>
>>52918139
That's the thing.

People look at an archetype and see what it can do, and are disappointed when it isn't impressive.

But when it comes down to it, you want an even trade. Unless the class is shit and needs a boost, but in that case, a holding pattern still isn't BAD.

>>52918192
Sword Saint could be notably improved, yeah. Personally, I'd probably make the limit a 1/person/combat thing, but let you choose to challenge them as part of the action.

Or heck, what you could do is make it REPLACE challenge. Make your Iaijutsu be a single hit rather than challenge's continual thing, but make it triple your level or something. Or double initially, then x3 when you get your second iterative and so on, up to x5 your level. Or even if you don't wanna replace it, still make the strike a bigger flat modifier rather than a single hit of sneak attack damage. 10d6 is an average of +30, which isn't that great on one attack.

And a note that you can apply Vital Strike to it.
>>
Can a bounty hunter perform dirty tricks on ranged attacks with their sneak attack conversion?
>>
>>52918201
Honestly, I think it applies MORE to the core races than the other one.

That's basically it.

Like, how many races have had influence on the world of Golarion?

Most of the time they never even show the fuck up, let alone be relevant. Humans, elves, half-elves. Occasionally a dwarf or gnome or halfling. The occasional tiefling.

That's about it.

Catfolk are kinda shit actually.

Stat the Aurin. DO IT!!!
>>
>>52918192
To elaborate on what I'm doing with the races, just for shits:
-Elves used to have a big jungle-island empire that they leveraged into a near monopoly over sea trade. Shit happened during the Hell Wars, the ones on the island got cursed into nerfed medusas, modern Elves are the descendants of the fleets, with Northern Elves being more racist / having more of a superiority complex than southern Elves.
-Humans have a widespread territory towards the south, and have largely taken over the Elven trade routes following the collapse of their Empire.
-Orcs aren't a young people but have a young history since they don't really record it and instead rely on oral histories, but they like embellishment and exaggeration so their histories get more wrong the further back you go. Masks are a huge part of their tribal structure, with certain mask motifs denoting tribal allegiance and such. As such, The Mask is largely synonymous with The Tribe, and any Orc worth his mettle will fight to bring glory to the Mask. If you weren't getting it yet, they take a lot of inspiration from Lucha Libre. They have a lot of stories about heroes suplexing demons and shit.
-The Troglodytes, until very recently, were the lords of a large underground kingdom. That got all fucked up during the Hell Wars, their slaves rebelled, and the kingdom collapsed. It's not gone, but their cities are largely in ruins and they've lost control of most of them, leaving them as little more than dungeon monsters in their ancestral halls.
-Gnomes are mountain dwellers who formed a large Ninja tradition while defending their territory against the better equipped, numerically superior Trogs.
-Kobolds made up the brunt of Trog slaves, and were used for digging and disposable combat troops. Since the fall of the Underkingdom, the Kobold have begun utilizing their own style of ninja arts, based off the Gnomish methods they've been forced to fight against and their own elemental heritage.

So, question. If I were to run a campaign where the players are in a crusade against the fiendish planes, and the end goal was for them to fight the archfiends, horsemen, and demon lords (not necessarily at the same time, obviously), would Mythic be a good idea? Or should I just stick to standard Epic rules, and have them go past level 20?
>>
>>52918901
Probably just do epic advancement, mythic fucks with the rules a lot.
>>
>>52918901

Don't mythic beings get a lot of bonuses and resistances that make it extremely difficult for nonmythic beings to kill them?
>>
>>52918901

>>
>>52918821
Okay fine, I can concur. You can at least compress them down and keep them from bouncing around.

I'll probably play a voluptuous half-elf archer girl in the next /pfg/ game that comes up, to be honest

Hello. I am new to pathfinder and I have made my first character. Or well the backstory and everything. They are a tiefling cavalier 10th level. Order of the shield.

Would you be willing to help me if I showed you the game sheet and the pastebin with my character in it? As well as the character generation rules? Id really appreciate it.

>>52918884
Doesn't matter, as the effect is the same - proper form means that breast size isn't an issue.
>>
>>52918917
Yes. Mythic beings also tend to have things that are autosuccess unless the target is also mythic, at which point you actually get a save.

The average person is LITERALLY INCAPABLE of preventing Drakainia from xenomorphing a baby down your throat. Level 20? Doesn't matter.

Congratulations. It's an abomination.
>>
>>52918953
It kind of depends on the class combos and their tier even if thats a naughty word around here. Like some of the mythic spells get fucking ridiculous and on top of that both acrhmage and hierophont have an ability to just spontaneously cast any spell unprepared by spending power, which is fucking nuts. Giving casters just higher levels, maybe adjusting how many new slots they get and maybe letting them cast certain types of mythic spells should work. More martial characters on the other hand kind of need things like surge and the various path abilities if you aren't using PoW
>>
>>52918956

The mold of tabletop tropes, since every archer girl I recall from fiction is lithe, slender, and a redhead.
>>
>>52919008
Oh I should not, the archmage and hierophont spontaneous cast powers don't require you to actually know the spell, just be able to cast it, and they dont use up any spell slots.

I want to talk setting lore, guys. With Blingmaker rolling out soon I'm wondering who would actually win in a civil war in Brevoy between Issia and Rostland, assuming no intervention from the PCs. Rostland has the swordlords but Issia has armies, presumably this is a case of quality versus quantity respectively. There's also the issue that with Brevoy as it currently is and with Surtova leading the nation, House Orlovsky might actually not side with Issia if they think the war could dethrone House Surtova. At least, they might decide to remain neutral, which would reduce the numbers advantage of Issia. Also worth considering is that the the capital of Brevoy is actually in the middle of Rostland, giving the swordlords and Rostlandic houses an advantage of home turf. On the other hand, Rostland also has an unsecured southern border.
>>
>>52918901
Not him, but on a slightly related note how would the various powers that be react to something like this?
I mean sure it's dumb and probably wouldn't actually ever happen in setting, but how would the gods and other sorts of factions react to some epic human heroes laying smack downs on a bunch of evil demigods?

Character generation rules:

3). Level ---
Characters will begin play at level 10. All characters will receive maximum hit points at 1st level and a set amount of HP at every other level depending on their class HD. Drop fractions after totaling.
CLASS HD HP PER LEVEL
d6 4.5
d8 6
d10 7.5
d12 9

4). Traits ---
As per the Pathfinder rules. Characters will get two (2) traits for free at Character Creation. Traits must come from two different categories Players cannot take traits from the various Pathfinder Campaign Paths, or 3rd-Party Traits. Players may not take drawbacks. The Additional Traits feat may be taken to gain extra traits.

5). Equipment ---
Characters start with 60000 gp for equipment and magical items. The costs for items are the standard costs in the PFSRD.
Characters with item creation feats may not make any magic (or mundane) items at character creation. Characters may buy whatever equipment they can afford (with the exception of cursed or intelligent items) but I will ban items that I consider overpowered. Only one stat-enhancing item per character.
Characters with spells/formulae/etc can choose spells from the following sources: Core Rulebook, Advanced Players Guide, Advanced Class Guide, Advanced Race Guide (but spells created by your race only), Ultimate Combat and Ultimate Magic.

10). Feats ---
Most Pathfinder feats are available; then again, optimize your character with funky combinations of these and your character will be rejected. Leadership is banned. These are the rules that are relevant to you guys.

Divided Attention (+1 Dodge AC against enemies who flank them): Draken fight from a young age, and even the weakest among them knows how to defend themselves against multiple attackers.

Horns of Dominus: Draken gain a Gore attack as a natural weapon, dealing 1d6+str points of piercing damage.

>Extreme heat (air temperature over 140° F, fire, boiling water, lava) deals lethal damage. Breathing air in these temperatures deals 1d6 points of fire damage per minute (no save). In addition, a character must make a Fortitude save every 5 minutes (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Those wearing heavy clothing or any sort of armor take a –4 penalty on their saves.

>Extreme cold (below –20° F) deals 1d6 points of lethal damage per minute (no save). In addition, a character must make a Fortitude save (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage.

By pure RAW, if you have at least resistance 6 to fire/cold, you're completely immune to any temperature short of being directly coated in ice/set on fire. Most DMs allow resistance 5 to count for this just to make things a little cleaner.

Golarion introduced some ideas I liked and unashamedly stole (hamatulatsu, conceptually) but I don't feel like the setting itself is worth playing in. Homebrew is, imo, where the best campaigns happen, though more specialized settings are also pretty good. I'm a fucking pathetic nerd for Eberron.

For building a setting, I find starting small and working out produces better results. I use Golarion. I also have a couple incomplete homebrew settings, one of which I incorporated into a campaign I ran as a huge demiplane the PCs explored during later parts of the campaign.

The kitchen sink approach ends up making Golarion's nations feel like setting unto themselves when you run a campaign in them in my experience. Like, you could practically forget the nations other than the one you're playing in exist, and you probably do in order to keep a sense of verisimilitude in your game.

It's kind of a weird answer. Everything in PF is stronger than it is in 5e, so taken to extremes, a properly built martial in PF is going to be killing things much faster and have more broad effectiveness here than it does in 5e. Relative to the rest of the game though, martials in Pathfinder are a lot weaker than properly built caster sorts than the 5e counter-parts are to theirs.

As far as gameplay options go on the topic of 1pp, martials in Pathfinder are deceptively similar. Most of them tend to play very similarly with a few exceptions, you take a small step and you fire off your attacks. I find martials in 5e much more satisfying to play personally, but the amount of small tweaks you can make it Pathfinder might be more accommodating depending on what you expect from your martials.

Those are indeed some nice stats. Here's a short list of basic tips:

Cavalier is a fairly weak class, and I think you could probably do better with a paladin or even a fighter. If you want to stay with it that's fine as well, but you should be aware of its weaknesses.

Power Attack is basically a must for any melee combatant.

You're going to want Combat Reflexes and a reach weapon. Stem the Tide is Order of the Shield's strongest feature, and you should try to make the most of it. It might be best to just use a lance, as you're going to want one anyway and you'll save a bit on weapons.

Cavalier's major shtick is the mounted charge. Your chances to actually do so are probably going to be limited, but it is still probably worthwhile to pick up the Mounted Combat + Ride-By Attack + Spirited Charge package. Whenever it's viable, you want to be charging people on your horse with a lance. While you can use it in one hand while mounted, you should use two hands.

A level 10 start means Tactician will actually be in a usable state, so put some thought into your choice of teamwork feats. Bonded Mind is a personal favorite for (Ex) telepathy with your group. Outflank and Precise Strike are decent combat options. If you have any other melee characters in your party, you're going to want to Coordinated Charge at 11, or earlier if retraining is allowed.

I run a 5e game and find the class balance to be generally good, though we're not yet at the upper tiers of play (and probably never will be because I'm super stingy on exp).

Melee types can more reliably do everything. Fighters can add combat maneuvers as add-ons to their regular attacks reasonably often, which makes them far more interesting, throwing away the action economy debate in favor of spending resources instead. Rogues don't even need a flank, just a helper. Casters are substantially weaker (but still quite good), making mundane skills and fast-recovery options more attractive. Feats are much less of a train wreck, since they did away with feat chains being required to be effective, and they tend to be one-off bonuses used to better customize your character now.

Not really, I prefer to make my own settings. I'm always afraid I'll overlook something whenever I use another setting. If I make it myself then I have an idea of what I'm aiming for and if I don't have an answer prepared for my player then I can make one on the fly.

I usually start from the big picture working down. I think of what I want the setting to be for, then how the setting came to be. After I figure out the gods, the history and the land I pick an area where I'll have the party start and build it up around them.

I'm currently working on a setting where the world is divided into two continents: the North belongs to the Olympian gods while the Osirian Gods rule the South. Also dragons are from space.
>>

>>
>>52920620
Not him and I wouldn't say either system is realistic, but 5e is probably more-so than Pathfinder on merit of being much more grounded. It's definitely weaker at high-power games but they're manageable, and bounded accuracy works fine in combat. All in all, I think 5e has much better combat mechanics than Pathfinder does.

The system kind of falls apart after that. I think there's a thread up right now about how badly bounded accuracy affects skills which're pretty shit in the system, and while I think Pathfinder is more illusion than choice, fact of the matter is that you'll be hard pressed to make one character in a class archetype different from another. Complaints about the game typically apply more to people who've played long enough to go through the options though, they're rather limited but when the core mechanics feel good with how much mobility they add to combat.

5e isn't without its flaws and it's absolutely worth a try, but if it doesn't stick to you quickly then don't push yourself. It does what it does well, and for everything else, it doesn't.
>>
>>52920659
Well for one they aren't deities, they're close but not there

>>
>>52920620

It really depends on your point of view. 5e is still a game about big damn heroes, but it steps back from the heights that 3.5/PF went to. The point of bounded values (not just accuracy, but skills, saves, etc) is to put the brakes on power inflation. The characters in my game are probably a shadow of what the equivalent PF character would be in terms of raw numbers and power, but they're still unquestionably becoming more competent over time as they pick up new abilities and trinkets.

One of the major advantages in the math is that it removes some of the weirdness where people can optimize themselves into another league entirely. My players are not huge minmaxers at all, but the system keeps them roughly in stride anyway.

It's actually pretty simple. You make all your iterative attacks like normal, and you also make your natural attacks but treat all of those natural attacks as secondary, meaning you only add half STR mod to damage and use your highest BAB -5 to determine your bonus to hit. Also, any limb that's being used to wield a weapon you attack with can't be used for a natural attack in the same turn. Basically your natural weapons get shitter from mixing them with your iteratives, but your iteratives work just as well as normal so throwing the natural attacks in can't hurt.

Some of my understanding of 5e, admittedly having barely played it, is that it is better balanced than PF but that balance comes at the cost being much more bland mechanically. They balanced all the classes by making them run in fundamentally similar ways and by making them generally more low power. To each their own, but that's not my tastes. I'd rather have a broken system where there's a ton of material and it's all pretty different. Even if a lot of it is trash.

As a ratfolk (or any race with a tail, I guess), is it possible to get a snake for a tail? I don't mean a snake tail, I mean an actual snake... for a tail. Preferably permanently, ideally with a bite attack, especially if it's capable of delivering poison.

No third party allowed, but anything else is fair game. Any class, any spell, any feat, doesn't matter. I just want to know if it's something I can even do. I'll take anything I can get.

Pic sort of related.

>Every campaign in dnd is about wealth and power

Rise of the Runelords is about solving problems in the Varisian hinterlands, wealth and power come as a consequence.

Kingmaker, and by extension Blingmaker, are about taking a region and developing it into a colony. Wealth and power are not a consequence, they're what you're working towards.

Remember, back in these days the wealth of the kingdom was also the wealth of the king, which means the bigger the kingdom the more spending power the PCs can have.

I bet you it'll instead use Dungeons the Dragoning's Overheat model:

>attack as normal
>target dodges or uses/expends counters as normal if they can
>on hit or defense failure, roll damage as normal
>if any of the damage dice turn up one less than their maximum (so, a 9 on d10s): OVERHEAT!
>The weapon actually failed to fire. Cancel the damage roll.
>cancel and return whatever expended/used up actions/counters/defensive-items/etc on the target; they were never shot
>now roll damage again against yourself

Actual Atheism in these fantasy settings is just as dumb if not dumber than Theism in real life.

However, there's a view such as 2e Planescape's "Athar" as well as the... Godsmen I think they were? Both of these had reasonable ... equivalences.

>These fuckers die if we don't worship them, don't see all, aren't omnipotent, and often act like childish pricks. They do NOT deserve our worship energy

>Anyone has the potential to one day attain the power of the divine entities. Cultivate yourself and reach new heights!

Very friendly factions.
>>
What deity is most thematic for Blingmaker? Abadar seems obvious, but he hates fun and loves being responsible, which is just terrible.

>>
>>52921775
>Actual Atheism in these fantasy settings is just as dumb if not dumber than Theism in real life.
That's arguable. There's a safe way for atheism to work, or at least a valid way.

>These are powerful outsiders, very powerful, but how do we differentiate powerful outsiders from gods?

In 3.x we could at least find divine ranks, but there's no such method mechanically in pathfinder. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to the group.

Mhmm, it's... 9 ranks to give people up to 9th level spells? Most people will never get that far so mythic level 4 should suffice for the vast vast majority of the population. Since classes are a metagame construct there's no reason for them to even question why they can't cast 5th level spells.
