The problem is, that the new sun while intent on purging the land, shows no mercy. Everything of the old will burn, good or bad, to make room for the New.

The sun that is approaching is colloquially known as The Plague Star.
The idea is that it purges the land once in a while to prevent the death of the world.

Vampires are taking advantage of the sun's death to destroy the mortal races.

Nobody has any fucking socks

However the people finally understanding this start to live in giant underground cities.
Ofcourse after centuries of living underground humanity starts to change.

In a manner similar to interior worlds fantasy, there are different societies further and further underground, due to the cycle of the new star passing, and in the past.

Basically every time the star passes and burns away the old, some few survivors retreat underground, and have been doing for thousands of years. Every time some survivors retreat underground, they end up supplacing the previous survivors and pushing them further underground. Since this has been going on many times, the underground is just layers upon layers of different survivor races who keep getting pushed further down.

There is a holy order of knights errant that rove the dark surface, devoted to the preservation of light. It is said that the pure can resist the power of the Plague Star, but that is little more than an old wives' tale.

The "vampires" are actually the surviving races who have developed vampire-like characteristics after being underground for generations.
The "mortal races" are those that have developed an immunity to the Plague Star's harmful effects and started to expand on the surface.

This whole process of being pushed deeper and deeper beneath the earth has been going on for longer than record-able history; as such, there could be any number of ancient civilizations, many of which still inhabited by any number of races, deep below the ground.

Scholars and scientists have debated and theorized about the nature of the world; of the academic theories of the world, some say that the world is bottomless, or that whenever one pushes down an equal amount of sediment is created above, so that this would go on forever. Others theorize that there is, in fact a bottom to the world, and that entire nations are ground up as they are forced up against it - or perhaps that they are pushed off into an endless void.

And there's something crawling up. Pushing from below just as we push down. Creaking and scratching can be heard at the lowest levels. Missing miners and grizzly murders.

But what do they want? What are they?

Elves are making plans to escape to the moon, hoping that the moon is a sepreate entity to the world and will allow them to survive

A creeping, endless blackness lies below the deepest levels. At once an ocean, a desert, a machine, an organism.

Darkness from below. Darkness from above. What little light remains is the light we create, a pale imitation of past days.

In the deepest levels of the labyrinth, there are rumors of ancient magical artifacts, said to be able to banish the darkness once and for all, however, they lie on the apex of the encroaching evil.

Those who venture so close, undergo horrific changes.

The once that survive attacks from THEM have weird fever dreams before they die. Visions of long gone cities and people.

Each one of the things is as varied as the horrors that they bring, some humanoid, some as formless as the shadows from which they strike, but the one thing that pervades them all, the visions that have become both the symptom and harbinger of their attacks, inspire two emotions:

Fear... and nostalgia?

Could they not be showing us visions, but trying to make us remember?
