It's passable, paints aren't too thick.

For dust, hair etc., get a blusher brush. Essential tool. See a lot of dusty models on /wip/, I fully wipe down my painting area if it hasn't been used for more than a day or two, and give my models a quick dust before every session.

No. Greenstuff shrinks when it dries and stays flexible which is undesirable more often than not.

You need Privateer Press Brown Stuff. That's got the best properties of any kind of modelling putty I've tried. Buy that instead, it works like a charm.

>Looking at WW1 Dazzle Camoflage to liven him up though!
Hey, that's a pretty good alternative if I do say so myself. Hmm, now I want to paint some tanks...
>>
>>52899733
Maybe if you're desperate. But plastic glue, if you've just assembled a plastic miniature and have some slight gaps, is actually preferable to modelling putty provided you have the ability to file it back down once it cures

Can someone recommend me an airbrush and compressor?
I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something that'll help me prime and basecoat without breaking to a stiff breeze. My price range is around $200 USD which is I heard the bare minimum for a decent setup.

I hear the Iwata Eclipse and Badger airbrushes mentioned a lot, but I don't know how the two compare with each other. I know nothing about air compressors, at least in terms of small-scale airbrushing.

>>52904036

Anyone here have advice on carving into resin?

My other option, but I want to avoid it, was to drill out the area and re-fill it with reshaped greenstuff/putty.

I know about the whole "recasting is the better choice" thing, but still, how hard is it to carve into resin pieces, in a pinch?

If you don't want to spray matte varnish and then pick out stuff in gloss varnish with a brush, maybe just try satin?

Apparently GW's own satin varnish, Purity Seal, is actually quite decent and forgiving if you spray lightly. Going to pick up a can myself, not at RRP though.

Uck, I wouldn't buy either of those compressors. Definitely not the ones from Horrible Freight; I had one, kept getting worried about lighting my apartment on fire from overheating. Lose the crap airbrush and no name paints, just get a tanked compressor:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001738DXU/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_tFiazbZPKKG1Z

I own it, it runs, doesn't overheat.

>>52904541
I can only vouch for the Eclipse (which I own); I doubt a Patriot (Badger's equivalent) would really let you down though. The two things that swayed me to the Iwata camp were the facts that I was able to import an Eclipse from Japan cheaply and parts were readily available locally for it.
>>
what is the most basic glue I can use on plastic minis
pe/pp super glue, regular super glue, wikol or hot glue?
>>
>>52904541
Not so much a recommendation as a tip if you can, but Hobby Lobby has a once per month 40% any item code. Just go to their site and its up there. They have a decent selection of compressors and airbrushes, and I grabbed a good Iwata for $80 rather than the 140 it was going for.

If there's one near you I'd give it a go.

At the same time, amazon has some nice package deals that are pretty cheap if its your first airbrush. Some compressor/airbrush packages go for about 80, and if its your first airbrush that should last you fine for basics, or help you work up to something more expensive.

wikol is water based, most commonly used for wood and paper but some use it for plastic because it's clean and dries neat and transparent with some filling properties, which might be what I need

Hey, I got directed here from the /AoS/ thread,

I am a fairly new painter and I want some advice on painting my minotaurs. I want to do them in black and white (like Diablo 2 cows) and I'm trying to greenstuff some udders for added hilarity.

I know that it looks like shit right now and I was hoping to get some tips to make it look better. Specifically, I hate how the horns/teeth don't stand out at all from the rest of the white.

Can anyone here offer any advice for a newbie?

not that anon, but can you explain, what's the problem with painting on bare metal?
>>
>>52911133
Don't use pure white except as extreme highlight.
You're better off using off whites instead. That way you can still shade and highlight. I mean what is there to go to to highlight white with? You see what I mean?
The reason we shade and highlight miniatures is to replicate the way light behaves on larger surfaces to make it look better. If you use flat white you have to rely on the sculpt and natural light to do that instead, which usually look pretty flat and lifeless.

So my first piece of advice: Don't use white to paint white.
Want a warm shade? Use a bone/ivory color instead.
A cool shade? Use an ice blue/grey.
Working on something spooky or sickly? Then use something with a green tinge.
That way you get a lot more control over your miniature's paintscheme too.

Working from what you got there, i*d say if you apply a very thinned down sepia/brown wash over the white areas you might get a similar effect. Then rehighlight if necessary.

Same goes for the blacks. If you use a warm tone in your white you can highlight black with brown.
If you use a cool shade on your whites, highlight black with blues or greys.

I gotta say though, the udder looks udderly ridiculous.
Almost vulgar. Like four half erect penises. Not really sure what to tell you about that.
Personally not a fan of the implementation, but I get the idea behind it.

>>
>>52911298
Thanks for the advice.

I tried to mix some golden brown into my white in order to sort-of tone it down but I guess that didn't really show/work.

As for the udders, I am really unhappy with how it turned out. It was my first real attempt at using greenstuff and it turned out like shit. To be honest, I was thinking about scraping the whole concept all together and just ignoring it but a friend said it was too funny to not try. In the end, I still have it done for this one model so I want to try to make the best of what I have.

The paint won't stay on. Primer exists to create a base layer that the paint will actually stick to. If you paint on bare metal, or even bare plastic, it'll chip off really easily.

It also creates a flat, uniform base to work from and helps coverage.

Because it looks like fucking dogshit, is lazy and messy and your model will look the part.

Drybrushing is only good if you use it as a complimentary technique and got otherwise good painting skills. Blending, shading, etc.

I've seen enough armies FULL of drybrushed anything. Tanks, soldiers, you name it to see how ugly and lazy it is.

It's like drawing something with a penicl but not taking the time to properly shade but smear the pencilblotches with your thumbs.

Learn to blend and shade metallic without drybrushing first before you use it.
Otherwise it's going to suck and your army is eternally doomed to look like a lazy 12 year old rushed it to be "board ready" by taking a shortcut.
>>
>>52912694
That looks great but also amazingly breakable.

what is it?
>>
>>52912730
Seems like a sincere grievance. I typically base > wash > base highlight > highlight > then drybrush if I want a more weathered look.
>>
>>52912694
ok
>>
>>52912793
The problem with weathered is that I know people who made models that took em days to finish look like 30 minutes rushjobs because of shitty weathering.
Its only suitable for WW2 stuff t b h. Not for warhammer, thats too cartoony and flashy in concept for realistic weathering or unshaded plain colors to properly work.

I still have a bunch of 2nd generation space muhrines in my basement from when I was 10 and thought drybrushing was the smartest shortcut EVER.
Since then I've come to realize my mistakes.

the image here is the Dragon King next to a 32mm miniature from the Kingdom Death range.
He's not a small model as you can see.

He's very slender in build, so maybe not bulky enough for a daemon prince? He'd definitely be a more subtle sort if he was though.
>>
>>52912849
Agreed. I think highlighting is a more suitable method for wh40k, and I must admit I am using the said weathering technique on my WW2 DAK StuG III G. But still using highlighs as well.

Now that I'm in a full time job I feel like my priorities are changing when it comes to painting/modelling. I don't have the time (well, I don't want to allocate too much of it) for the work part of the hobby like I did as a kid.

Like seriously, I am beginning to prefer singlepose, snap piece models over multipose models. Which is a complete 180 from my mindset growing up.

It's unfortunate because I can finally afford all the gucci shit I want now. I have like 12/15 crisis suits on their sprues still because of this neglect, fire warriors, space marine dreadnoughts, and 50 death korps of krieg models plus Bolt Action models, all waiting for me to justify the time to clean/prep/model them.

Its pretty much a straight kitbash of an onager (the gun, armor plates, and arms) and a dreadknight (legs & torso) the only "specialty" part is the head, and that's the senor array from the old apocalypse upgrade sprue. You get similar results from the targeter array that comes with a lascannon sponson on a land raider.

You see those reflections on the model from where the light hits the gloss?
Now paint them on.
Literally transforming 4/10 miniatures into 10/10 by simply using highlighting.

Otherwise nice job.
>>
>>52913233
Id also recommend matt varnish to everyone, satin instead of gloss.
Having models shiny and glossy makes them look cheap and toy like.
Satin varnish and proper shading gives them more "weight" even though it's cartoony

Hey /wip/, I've finally started to move on to painting my vehicles recently and I'm kinda worried that I'm putting too much paint on it.
It just seems like the amount of paint I'm using is far too much for the panels I'm putting it on even though the paints have been thinned out properly. Is this normal?
For reference I'm painting an Ork Trukk.

I was putting some magnets on the bases of some models for transport purposes and used hot glue and waitied for it to dry but the magnets still ended up pulling out of the base, sitting there and staring at me defiantly. This will not stand. Is there a recommendation of a glue that will work between plastic bases and magnets to keep them from coming off the bases when attached to metal?

>>52914474
What are you priming with? In what temperature? What paints are you using? How much are you watering it down? What are you trying to achieve as a base color?
For armour it's not suggested to basecoat using a brush, especially not with a black primer to say, red for example. Colored primers are "1.2" next step from black to getting your basecoat done with an airbrush, the half way would be utilizing GW's spray base which are actually fantastic. If you've been using black primer, it's not great. Takes too much to get to a vast range of colors and dulls them. If you're painting an ork trukk, you would prime white, spray base silver and go into the details with watered down silver going over whatever you missed trying to avoid primer buildup on the model. Afterward all you would need are copious amounts of washes, which are watered down as well. This is all done best just clipped from the sprue with very minimal assembly, keeping the silver bits from the majority chassis which you can spray red and still go over whatever is silver easier than with black. Because you aren't using a black primer you have to rely on washes and smart highlighting to bring out the depth in the model. Doing so with different washes for red, say a brown wash than a black wash for silver provides best results.
>>
>>52914711
Ok, thanks man.
I had primed it with black and was base coating it with mephiston red so that's probably where the problem was.

Anyone here have experience with the old Warzone plastic models? I got 80 trenchers coming but I'm not sure exactly what size they are.
Will SM scout arms fit on them if I saw off their current arms, or will they look comically out of proportion? I've seen conversions that use Scion arms and they seemed to work quite well, but I'm not sure how they compare to scout arms.

Just finished off these guys today.
Spent the past few days working on them. Based them this morning.
They don't have the standard Dark Angels Green (didn't have access to Caliban green) so I replaced it with waaagh green (Heresy).
Third time I've worked on minis, first time I've actually tried dry brushing.
They also don't follow the standard color scheme of Dark Angels, white on the right shoulder instead of red. (Not a fan of red on green)

Shoulder pads done now, just need to clean up the base and paint the bolter.

Would the bolter look too outlandish if I paint it red instead of black? I'm unsure how the red will work with the greens and blues on the figure.

Spray a white undercoat then do two thin coats of... well I'm not sure what the exact match of your main armor color is. Warpstone glow or warboss green maybe? Then take a small brush and wash only in the recessed areas with nuln oil, then do some edge highlighting or drybrushing with moot green and you'll be good to go. This is the method I personally use to paint imperial fists yellow, Id imagine it works well for bright green as well. GW has several tutorials that use this method.

Patrician chapter selection btw.

Formula P3, Vallejo, and Game's Workshop's paint lines are all generally well-liked and a common sight in /wip/. It's really up to you which one you pick. They each got their ups and downs, but all are very good overall.
If you go with GW just make sure you got some spare dropper bottles to transfer your paint into. Those little pots GW uses are terrible and make scenes like pic related quite commonplace.
>>
>>52920744
I like Scale 75 as they have their Fantasy Game range which is much like Vallejo Game colours, but can be bought in useful packs e.g. Unnatural Flesh tones set. Sclae 75 main range is a much thicker, more pigmented range, that dries matt, rather than satin, and the flesh tones set for that is great.

P3 and Vallejo I then use as my impulse buys for those colours I have run out of/extra interesting tones I don't have with Scale. P3 definitely behaves differently to the others, due to liquid pigments.

GW paints
+Easy to find required paints for a canon scheme, no guesswork required
+Brush-on range with matching Airbrush range
+Good range of colors
+Great metallics
+Great washes, both in range and quality
+Good range of babby's first technical paints
+Good range of texture paints for basing
+Makes rattlecan sprays for easy basecoating
-Rattlecan sprays are obscenely expensive
-Most of their actual paint pots are also pretty expensive ($4.25 for a small pot, $7.50 for a large pot)
-Fucking terrible pots
-No tints available outside a boxed set (makes it hard to consistently replicate a mixed paint)
-Paints vary in quality and consistency (some paints are smooth straight out of the pot while others are QUITE chunky)
-Some paints are just pretty limited in usefulness while still being full price
-Fucking TERRIBLE pots

Vallejo makes better airbrush paints than GW but I've been disappointed in their brush-ons compared to GW; never used P3 or Scale 75.

Not a bad haul if I do say so myself. Whole ton of Death Company, Assault Marines, n' Terminators and barely any Tacticals - the way BA should be played.

All the BA successors are on Baal right now, so having a mix of Chapters is pretty damn fluffy for the time being. That said, I'm a personally a sucker for Flesh Tearers. I just like there fluff and scheme the most.

Wargear is the typical obvious answer, since the rest of the boys can't take special pistols or combies.

Some chapters use different colors, for example I think Blood Angels used different colored helmets for rank and role.

Good painting technique, poor understanding of your paints.
Right now your guys look almost uniformly gray aside from the white and gold highlights. Compare the contrast between all the colors of your models with the contrasts found in pic related's Spess Sherk models. For the most part, yours are flat gray - no contrast, very boring - while his have a great deal of contrast, making them more interesting to the eye.
Gimme 1 sec to grayscale both to show you what I mean.

>>52923719
>currently i use a very light grey and highlight with white
Not that anon but maybe try using an even lighter gray and then highlighting with pure white? You still got a LOT of wiggle room to go lighter from the base color of their armor.

>Gimme 1 sec to grayscale both to show you what I mean.
Pic related. Look at the difference in contrast between the bottom models and your models.

To make things relatively simple, when you're choosing paints, sometimes it's not enough to pick the colors that harmonize WITH each other (IE an analogous color scheme, similar to (but not the same as) what you have with all the similar shades of gray). Sometimes you want to pick the colors that work OFF each other - each one helping the other be more than it could be alone. A red next to a green (red's contrast, the color opposite it on the color wheel) will make both colors "pop" much more than either would by itself. These contrasting colors compliment one another, making for something much more vibrant and interesting to the eye.

However, a similar effect exists with tints and shades. A tint (a color with white added to it) will pop much more when placed next to a complementary shade (a color with black added to it). As it stands, the gray of your scheme is just that - Gray. Nothing pops because all the colors you've chosen are very similar in the amount of white and black mixed into them. Liven up your models by going more extreme with your tinting and shading.
Look at the models in the bottom of pic related. The black of the pauldrons looks a lot blacker when compared to the lighter gray of the rest of the armor (and vice versa). This is because black is just the darkest shade of grey there is. Similarly, the white looks a lot brighter than the darker gray around it (and vice versa) since white is the lightest tint of gray there is. See what I'm getting at?

If you plan things out correctly, you can come out with a model very interesting to the eye by only using variations of gray. Simply choose a gray in-between black and white, then use black and white to create contrast
tl;dr: your doods have a boring color palette; study color theory then add contrast to make them interesting

>i watched duncans video on how to paint carcharodons so i just copied that
While I love the guy, I was really disappointed with that one. I like my Charachardons with striking contrast, not just the sad gray he showed. I'd check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0YU-WqvvbY for tips on painting a Spess Shurk with more contrast. He's no Dunc, but what he ends up with is still quite nice.
Good luck anon. You're making me want to work on my own set of Tartaros Terminators again.

I think I'm more of a Cataphracii person myself, but Tartaros a close second to me.

>Word Bearers?
Flesh Tearers, actually.
I have legions of lads left to do, but I'm still learning the ropes of the hobby myself. I still need a lot of practice and conversion bitz before I'm ready to really tackle painting most o' my own mad melee men. It's getting there though, slowly and steadily, no matter how many more models I add to the backlog along the way.

What I really need to find a good transfer sheet and a way to recast Flesh Tearer shoulder pads en masse. Oyumaru molds and milliput has been okay for some small stuff so far, but I'm far from impressed with the milliput side of things. It's so messy and annoying to work with. No matter how long I knead the stuff beforehand, I can only ever seem to get one good bit out of the mold before some unhardened flecks milliput gunk up all the detail. I can never seem to get them out either. Not with dental tools or chemical cleaner. I can't even melt down the oyumaru and remold it entirely since the milliput just melts into into it and makes it all cloudy. It's like an infection.

No, EVERY idea is a dumb idea.

Well, foot fetishists aside, what's a good base to put under Auric Armor Gold.

Retributor or Balthasar depending on what kind of gold you're going for.
Retributor is much more yellow, while Balthasar is much more brown. Pic related.
>>
>>52925886
I like white or grey so I don't have to do as many layers.

Cultist #4 done. Flesh is really hard to paint and I got lazy with his pants... Happy with his eye though.
>>
>>52910168
1, 2 and 4 are the best
2 for "realism"
4 for eye pop
4 is a bit common with the red/black/white.
>>
>>52926037
Oh yeah, I like Retributor, thanks

What is a good model finish/seal that doesn't break the bank? I've never used one before, but I realized that I need to swap weapons with a lot of potential to scrap paint

Anyone got a clue where I can get tank books from AK interactive? need for painting guidance.
>>
>>52926783
I think you'll have to buy them, seem too niche to be on most sharesites.

Maybe look at scribd, they have all sorts of random garbage uploaded for DL points.

They look really nice, anon. The face of the unhelmeted one looks dirty though, which I'd guess was not the look you were going for. How did you paint it?

Terminators and representatives of two of the squads currently under construction, the Mk IV's are the last of my BaCticals, FINALLY!
>>
>>52926409
The shading on the skin is too dark, imo. Maybe something warm, for contrast?
>>
>>52927048
I think the problem was that I layed the nuln oil on too thick. I'll try applying it more lightly next time and see how it serves me.

Yeah it looks like filth because it got gold paint all over it when I did the rest of the armor. By then it had too many layers on it to really do a good job of the face. It is definitely the part I am most disappointed about. I'm seriously considering taking the head off and just putting a helm on him.
>>
>>52913970
if you have spare pwer claws you cut cut the tips off and glue them to the ends of the claws to make harpoon style claws.
>>
>>52927123
Maybe pop the head off to strip and repaint it? I think the head sculpt is pretty nice, and it distinguishes him from the rest of the goldie boys.

Trying to scratchbuild a western steampunk-esque saloon woman.
Unsure of what I should do for the base.
Thoughts?
