I do Armies on Parade and a couple other modeling competitions, but mostly just build and paint for fun

I am still deciding on my first proper army, I have some Skitarii I have painted, but they're from when I was just starting, so they're kind of ugly and falling apart from improper handling. So I ask for advice between Orks and Guard. I know advice for armies is a bit difficult due to 8th being right around the corner, but I genuinely can't decide. Orks, for a bunch of mek type units with some flyers, or maybe wait and see if rumours of plastic steel legion are true?

Perhaps slightly off topic but anyone know why the newer pirated 40k rules ebooks are a mess, and perhaps how to fix them.

I was interesting in catching up with the Gathering storm lore, but the epub in the first link is a total mess, had to go with pdfs from the third link which aren't much use on my phone as I had intended but will do fine on my PC.

In that case, it's highly unlikely considering the Russ doesn't even come with an accessory sprue to begin with.

Spend $50 on a tank and they expect you to throw in another $15 just to get the rest of the bits. Typical GW.

Last I checked any unit can hurt Riptides with any weapon. Doesn't make massed Lasguns against them viable.

Besides, the thing everyone always complained about with vehicles was getting one-shotted with explodes results. That's likely going to get removed in favor of heavier weapons rolling for damage, which means with more hullpoints tanks will be less likely to get oneshot, as well as that change also meaning anti-tank guns can actually oneshot MCs

While true tanks can now be hurt by anything if a Landraider has high toughness 30 wounds and a 2+ save it would probably be harder to kill than now overall, so while this definitely won't be the statline I wouldn't automatically assume vehicles are paper.

As an aside is massed vehicles actually that good in 7th I see monstrous creatures far more.

that's not that big a change. pretty much everything can do it in 8e, gaunts can (potentially) fleshborer a russ to death.for example. really it seems a decent move, now you can't end up in that shit scenario where 1 players remaining forces can't possivle hurt the others which is fun for neither player.

tanks are sure to be very high toughness and wounds which woukd make actually trying to kill them with lasguns unfeasible as anything but a desperate last resort.

This will actually be a pretty nice time to join once it's officially released and the rules are out. I'd say check if there's
any clubs, Games Workshop Warhammer stores, or any other local game store that stocks 40k and has tables for playing. Watch Warhammer TV's how to paint videos, they're amazing, man.

A) That's already the case- there is no reason to ever take a LRBT instead of a punisher, and even though only the Paskisher variant. Blast weapons that aren't AP2 are universally shit because the scale of the game has outgrown the point where templates are useful.

B) xD6 isn't strictly better nor worse then a non-template firing tank because you still have to aim with regular weapons-they can miss.

The most I would expect would be d3 for a hand flamer, d3+1 for a normal flamer, d3+2 for a Heavy flamer, and then 2d3 or a d6 for any of the really big ones like Baleflamers or Flamestorm cannons.

Still won't be quite as good at torching hordes, but it'll also keep them a bit more sane against smaller units.

Hitting your own dudes is pretty much a non-issue if you are positioning correctly. I guess not being able to hit them is a buff in a way but not in any noticeable way.
>>
>>52886072
I mean your opponent can do the same thing so that blasts do basically nothing. The change is pretty neutral on the whole, it' wouldn't break units just on its own, as you can adjust numbers to fit. Heck, give it an accuracy boost when shooting at large targets would solve it pretty easily.
>>
>>52886069

I'm up for getting rid of this chapter tactics bullshit. It's way too convoluted, some chapters get 3-4 different abilities that are too convoluted to be a simple USR.

Just give every chapter a single USR as their tactic, and maybe an HQ that changes their army up, just like in 5E.
>>
>>52886023
Hordes of weak units will already be extremely OP, this is a known fact. In a game where 'everything can hurt everything else' there's no point in building armies around any strategy but throwing as many weak shots at the enemy as possible, because even the wimpiest stuff will still hurt his toughest units.

>>52886039
>3-5 hits

>>52886089
So instead of a fairly simple template and scatter you have every unit with a different special rule or have to constantly count out how many units are in the target unit to see if you get a bonus for firing at them.

Seems like a pretty pointless change.

>Q: Command points? what can you tell us.
>A: Charges fight first, armies playing to play style. One of the mechanisms is called Command Points which allows you to make the army. You generate command points based on how large the army is. (Reroll dice, interrupt charging going first with a command point, etc. They are super valuable and tactical to use. Once they are gone they are gone. Additional command points will be in the various codexes (see below) Command points will for example, not only define a Space Marine army - but also the FLAVOR of Space Marine Army

So every army has Faith points now and Sisters are confirmed for never ever getting updated?

>>
>>52886231
Essentially, it means your models are painted well enough that if somebody was looking at them on the table, from more than a foot away, they'd look fine. They wouldn't be too messy or have any glaring mistakes, and have a clear color scheme without just being a flat spraypaint.

Doesn't require a bunch of minute detail work to get something that looks nice on the board

Ok, guys, I have an army composition question. I know 8th edition is right around the corner, but I'm asking for games tomorrow and this weekend.

When building my army, if I want to include multiple CADs and Allied Detachments, the BRB says that the Allied Detachment must be from a different Faction than my CAD.

To outline what I want to do, I'm playing in a sort of story campaign. We have to have 3 character HQs. I run vanilla Space Marines, but I'd like to somewhat cherry-pick my detachment special rules.

I want to run my Captain on a Bike and his Biker unit as White Scars. I want to run my Librarian, Tactical Squads, and Devastator Squads as Imperial Fists. And I want to run my Chaplain, a Tactical Squad, and a Death Company squad as Blood Angels.

CAD White Scars for Bikers and Scouts
CAD Imperial Fists Librarian, Tactical, and Devastators
Allied Detachment Blood Angels Assault Marines and Tactical Squad

Is this legal? And if not, is there a legal way to do this?

Primer on the guy on the right's backpack implies bad weather conditions. so it might be worth stripping them and starting over. Get a wet palette to thin your paints , there are a lot of spots where the paint is too thickly applied. Nice to see a different scheme for an army of your dudes though

If those are thinned, another problem may just be your color choice. Flat Black is hard to get right, and the shade of green you're using really doesn't seem to be turning out well in some spots.

The guy on the right looks a bit better overall, though that's mainly in the spots where it's just green armor and bronze trim. Hard to mess that up.

I would suggest using some spare flat armor bits and taking some time to practice. Try and get a better feel for how much paint you need on the brush to cover an area. Try to use as little as possible and work your way up.
>>
>>52886550
Hrmm. I'm guessing it might've been the humidity then.

As for thinning, I think I'm putting too much paint into the palette to begin with and then applying a small amount of water to it, thus the inconsistency.

Next time I paint I'm going to put in less paint, and then put in the drop of water to smooth it out?

Thinking about getting into the hobby after mostly just playing DoW and reading the books, but I don't want to just create a generic army because I'm a special fucking snowflake. I'm considering doing a Rogue Trader themed army because I like the lore and it let's me be flexible with theming armies together, like a deviant Rogue Trader who uses alien mercenaries or is willing to shelter a renegade SM chapter for services rendered.

I'm starting off with IG because IG are awesome and it let's me make a Company Commander into a Rogue Trader, but my question is, how do I make a model that looks like a Rogue Trader? Any suggestions?

I want to expand the Sisters Squads to 20 members each and add some penitent engines because I hate suicide squads and love walkers even though they're probably shit. That is not only points inefficient, but more money inefficient as well. There is never a need to go above 5 sisters of battle, especially when the squad inside costs more money than an immolator. Take it from a 10 year SoB vet. Also, Exorcists are overrated, and yes the model is a nightmare. We use them because we have no choice.

>Pretty sure that's gonna end up making it easier, yeah. Last I checked lasguns couldn't poke a Russ to death in the current rules.

The To Wound table is going to look like pic related. Plus, Vehicles getting a Toughness stat means they also get an Armour Save. A Leman Russ with T9 (likely under the current system for AV14) would probably have at least a 3+ save as well. Under the To-Wound table I posted, you would need to hit the thing 106 times before you statistically caused a single unsaved wound. "Able to wound" is extremely different to "This is a viable tactic".

That's being balanced again Tanks no longer being able to be one-shot by every AP2 and AP1 weapon in the game.

no they fight with their arriving gods and saviors. at least that was according to the 2e and 7e cult codex.

It's almost never better to take BS squads when you have other slots available. For example, 5 plain Retributers in a rhino are better than a BSS squad. If you're looking at Castellans, don't. CAD is better for Sisters.

>>>52887291 (You)
>For Penitent Engines it makes sense, they're looking for penance. For Sisters squads it doesn't, you can't fight for the Emperor if you're dead.
You don't get the whole Sisters deal, do you. They would gladly die in service of the emperor. The army used to get bonus faith points when units die. Hell, we have a tactical objective that gives us VP when our shit dies. We're literally an army of martyrs.

>Plus how many Marines is a 5-sister squad going to kill before going down? 1?
Heavy flamer, flamer, and 6 bolter shots will do about 2 wounds on average. Here's the kicker: a 10 girl squad with HF/F only does 3 wounds. Not worth the points when you could just buy another squad.

There's a reason that specialised equipment was developed to deal with tanks, actually the entire reason the tank was developed was to counter small arms.
>>
>>52887840
Templates going away means that different AoE weapons can finally have different capabilities.

Hand flamer, 6" 1d3 hits
Flamer, 8" 1d3+1 hits
Heavy flamer, 10" 1d3+2 hits

instead of every single cone shaped weapon, from a spray of acid to the fabric of the universe being torn asunder, hitting exactly the same, the can instead fill roles more easily.

Also, if we're getting T10+, it's likely that there will be multi-tiered wounding. Like how when you need a 7+ to hit in Shadow War, but for wounds instead of hits.
>>
>>52887859
>alter hit levels at an individual level
Yes, how wonderful that every template weapon will have a completely random number of hits even among the most densely packed units.

People bitch and moan about random charge distances and yet it's apparently fine making a unit with a flamer randomly useful.

>>
>>52887905
Listen, personally I don't like that they are getting rid of templates, because I think it adds more depth to positioning - but I doubt they're going to remove templates and then leave those weapons entirely gimped by having such a lackadaisical application of hits, such as making all templates still continue to be bound to the same central method of hitting previously accomplished with the template. So, instead of heavy flamers just being better strength d3 hits like they are now as a better statted template, maybe now they are d6+3 12" (just as an example) because they are no longer restricted by the template.

You can't reasonably claim a Lasgun could even put a scorch mark on a Land Raider. >>
>>52887971
It does seem a little counter intuitive. I have the same complaint with multiple damage, and armor modifiers. >I'd much rather there be a better way than just random hits
As do I. But, as this isn't a video game, it is limited in feasible methods of representation. I still remain cautiously optimistic at best. They seem to have addressed many important issues and seem genuinely focussed on making this edition robust. We can harp on getting for their past mistakes all we want but they have changed in some important ways. Now all that remains is to see of those changes worked for the better when 8 is released.
>>
>>52887996
Unless Land Raiders are built like the USS enterprise where a single sensor being hit causes every single electronics panel in the inside to explode with sparks, never. I challenge you to find a single case of this in the fluff.
>>
>>52888013
I never said superficial, I said minor. Using the Sponson optic as an example, maybe a lucky overcharge shot hit it in just the right spot to make it crack. If the platoon pulls off that one in a thousand shot two more times, then it might burn it out, which would be represented by the Land Raiders BS going down by 1.
>>
>>52888049
And yet it would never result in the land raider just shutting down, dead in the field or being anywhere closer to being destroyed by the meltaguns next to it.

These are such far flung possibilities the game is gaining literally nothing but having them.

But I don't see how you can be so anal about the structure of a vehicle being relevant to whether or not it can take damage and yet are apparently fine with the fact that every unit is as equally likely to damage the tank on it's thick front armor as it is the thinner rear armor.
>>
>>52888074

>>52888109
That's not an improvement.
>>
>>52888074
The only reason I engaged at all is because you or a different anon insisted that there was nothing on a Land Raider or Leman Russ that a lasgun could pose a threat to. If you want to move the goalposts to "Can hinder a tank" to "can outright destroy a tank", then I'm afraid I can't help you there. I was just refuting the argument that tanks are outright immune to small arms.
>>
Listen retards, the point is, even if they do enable lasguns to wound vehicles it will likely take the equivalent of 100 Guardsmen unloading on a tank to shave a wound off and if that is what you are using your lasguns for then you have no fucking idea how this game works.
>>
>>52888121
>There's so many ways for an army to deal with hard targets
some armies maybe

A lot struggle with shit like av14
>>
>>52888074

If we're looking at 6+/6+ to wound a Land Raider, which in all likelihood, as the toughest non-super-heavy in the game, has a 2+ save, then you're looking at a truly phenomenal number of hits to disable one. Leaving aside the fact that the average game wouldn't last long enough for that to happen, from a realism perspective, even the re-enforced armour plating of a Raider isn't impregnable. The sheer amount of las-fire hitting it is going to degrade the armour, slowly to be sure, but it will eventually crack through. You'd have to be standing there firing off with entire regiments on full auto for hours, but it could happen. Lasguns in the fluff aren't weak weapons; they're just going up against some pretty nightmarish things.

If it finishes off a Land Raider that's already taken significant damage, then thematically it makes perfect sense; the armour is cracked open from previous assaults and a lucky shot gets into the ammunition/fuel/alcohol stash and the vehicle goes up. There's a bit in a Ciaphus Cain novel where the Guard takes out an Ork Gargant with autocannons and multilasers....because it's been heavily damaged in a fight against Necrons and one leg is massively damaged. They target the exposed workings inside and the leg join gives way, causing the whole thing to topple over and explode. That's thematic, yet according to you that should never happen (and doesn't in current edition 40K).

yeah, gnoblars CAN hurt a great unclean one in AoS

Not every army can drop a drop pod full of meltaguns into a vehicle's rear armour turn 1
>>
>>52888119
flamers could be something like hits every enemy model within range of the attacker. there are ways they can account for hitting more in bunched up units.
>>
>>52888132
Let's do the math on that real quick. Assuming that it's a multi-tiered wound system, which it would have to be to make t10+ matter at all, then it should take two 6's in a row, followed by a failed armor save to deal a single wound to a W10+ Land raider. Let's say that a LR only has a 3+ save, just to give the guardsman an edge.

216 lasgun shots? My mathhammer is rudty, but that's what I'm getting.

If we say that 8th doesnt have a multi-tier system, and you only need a single 6 to wound, then it would take 36 shots. If we use AoS as a baseline for how many wounds it takes to affect performance, then it wwould take 72 guardsman all firing at a LR to deal enough damage to slightly effectnhow quickly it moves.

And that's assuming that, for some reason, a Land Raider will only have a 3+ save.
>>
>>52888186
But can you actually give examples of armies that cannot reasonably deal with av14 that can't just have their anti-armor weapons reworked or given new equipment? Ones that would actually benefit from the fact that everything can damage a tank now despite people vehemently saying it's so unlikely to happen?

Either it's going to happen reliably enough to actually matter in the situations where armies cannot otherwise hurt heavy armor or it's going to be so uncommon that it won't actually change anything.

i think thats just a knee jerk assumption based only pn know that templates are gone.

just a straight roll works well enough for things that are blasts. Flamers could use a different system but overalll I don't think it would be a big deal if they just worked the same way as blasts.

All points costs and shit are getting reworked as well so changes in effectiveness will almost certainly be reflected in changes of costs.

Best part of the announcement was when they claimed to have done out-of-house playtesting, that'd be a HUGE improvement over the usual dev vs dev testing.

Maybe they even had someone without insight into the design proofread the rules.

"After playtesting we found out that the Eldar are still underpowered and Riptides need a buff, as well as a move to the troops slot"

I doubt it will be balanced until it gets stress tested by a public release. GW said at adepticon that their playtesting resources are limited so I don't really believe their claims that this has been extensively tested. Balance might come as they update but I don't see any reason to expect it out of the gate.

Seems like bandaid solution rather than actually improving the army. People keep saying units rolling 6s are so unlikely to wound it'll take hundreds of shots to do anything, so will it really make that much of a difference? Anyways you can't really base effectiveness on the current edition considering the massive rules changes. For all we know all of the previously mentioned weapons will suddenly be much more effective.

I'm an Ork player and AV14 is an absolute nightmare. At ranged we have nothing reliable for taking it down, leaving us with melee....with no invul saves or decent armour saves outside of MANZ in an edition that thinks Cover Saves shouldn't exist.

We used to be able to chuck a suicide unit of Tankbustas at a vehicle to get rid of it but GW dealt with that one nicely.

Is the Assassinorum board game worth buying?
>>
>>52889240
It's a good game, but terribly repetitive because there is only one mission with slight randomisation of what happens. Works well if you only play it a few times a year, but seems like it would get stale fast if you played it often.

>>52889372

Over 50% saving on the models IIRC.

As far as the board game getting stale goes, there are rules for a couple more missions and other enemies (daemons) in a White Dwarf if you can get your hands on it. I believe it was one of the first three of the new monthly format.

Haven't played it myself, so can't comment on what they add.
