Working on a comfydark apartment CYOA and wanted to ask for advice.

Should the tone be melancholy or less so and more sort of quirky/nonsensical? The way I see it this can either be a depressing but somewhat cathartic apartment building where the dead and strange things of the world congregate or a lackadaisical Slice of Life paranormality.

Basically whether to go full comfydark or skirt around the edge and stay comfy-fun.

Any suggestions or ideas you'd want to see in such a CYOA are also appreciated.

Whats in the making at the moment thats worth keeping an eye on?

I can't help but feel this is wrong.

Wouldn't that mean dragonborn and shit count as furry? I feel like that's definitely not true.

It's almost a case where the more realistic the animal parts of it become, the less furry it is.

For example, a regular classic Minotaur. It's just a completely normal bull head on a human body. But then you start to anthropomorphize it, give it human eyes, less detail, human hair on top, a more human mouth that it becomes a furry.

IIRC, either the guy who created this or possibly just a common theory back when this was first posted was that this is more of an experiment in the presentation of CYOAs. Basically make a CYOA but overwhelmingly focus on the negatives of each option rather than the positives. It's clearest with the Innocent, since it's in many ways the exact same little girl option you'd get in many other CYOAs from the time except with the focus being on how ultimately boring a neverending dream childhood would be rather than on what endless cute fun you could have for all eternity.

I can see that for Fantasy and Innocent, as well as Stranger for the Comfy Life CYOAs. But the others feel like the negatives are just imposed to make the option terrible. Take Genius, for example - you could focus on the overwhelming mental isolation you'll feel, the guarantee that your discoveries will be used for awful purposes, and the fact that ultimately you'll fail to change society itself in any meaningful way. Or stressing that if you pick Explorer, you'll live your entire life among strangers with bizarre customs, never feeling truly at home, and (in a less arbitrary twist) never able to find your way back to Earth.

I think I thought of a way to (sort of) counter time skip.

Follow the target for a couple minutes while hoping you don't get spotted. After tailing them for a little bit you launch your attack. If they react to the attack before you make it, strike immediately.

From their perspective they are attacked, time skip out of it, then get attacked the moment they do something to defend themselves. It's not a perfect strategy, but I think it's the best I can do.

The real troublesome targets in the Highlander scenario are the guys with Relocation or Visions. The Relocators are going to jump the moment after everyone is made aware of everyone's locations. Pinning those bastard down will be tricky.

As for Visions, the smart idea would be to use their power every couple hours to look into the future. If they see a future where they're dead then they'll be scouting for the attack.

OCU that moonlights as Crisis Response when not deployed. He's debating on leaving the OCU because he's been digging up some of the data records of his superiors and has found evidence of corruption. Cop by day, On-Off Soldier, and Netrunner by night. It's less about money but hacking to find the truth about crimes, especially the ones that he's involved with as a CRD/OCU agent. If he senses corruption from the CRD, OCU, or other corps then he uses his hacking skills to expose them with Alice. His Jackpot was obtained when he found evidence of a Megacorp dealing with human trafficking with OCU and Exo Diplomats on the take. Draining the money from several of their "unmentionable" accounts he was able to buy the gear needed to bring them to justice. Leaking the evidence to Alice under his Netrunner Identity while using his CRD/OCU connections to create a sting allowed him to rescue most of the kidnapped children while CRD and his OCU buddies took out the corruption in the ranks. Under Axiom Strain he uses the remaining after his Jackpot to pay for things necessary for the kids to acclimate and recover from their ordeal.

The way I see it, being a guard should afford me some ability to explore the surrounding wilderness, as well as the ruins, castle, and cloud tower. The rusty dagger, yellowed book, and help from the chief should grant me some leeway with the old guard. Maybe he'd be willing to open up as to why he's keeping the village's secrets if I can impress him. If nothing else, I could always explore the primeval forest with the lonely monster. With the items I got, it should be relatively safe, and the mantle should allow for communication with some very old beasts. Might even try communicating with the wandering god if I can find it.

Well it definitely makes a little more sense now. I thought Traits were going to be skills, rather than just being toggle options. I'd have to try and make a Build when I have time, but it definitely feels like it's centered around you picking four contracts. If you don't, it's hard to build something functional. I'd recommend pricing it at 2 or 3 contracts - 1 gets you bare bones, 4 gets you luxuries but you're going to have to earn them.

I think that it might be worth buffing a couple of the others rather than nerfing the ones the two of us had in common. I suspect that pretty much everyone will take Caduceus-depressed anons will want it for the perfect euthanasia, everyone else will want it to maximise lifespan and quality of life.

I don't think Sinecure is overpowered. Glass Dome, P&W and Media Insight might be for people who like the idea of power and control, like I do. Eidetic felt like a guaranteed pick to me, but I'm not sure everyone would think it's worth it compared to more tangible upgrades.

Relocation and Vengeance feel pretty useless to me, since anyone willing to take some time to save with Sinecure can replicate the former trivially whilst the latter is very niche, and those who do hate someone enough to want Vengeance can probably cobble together something using other powers anyway (like blackmail with Glass Dome).

I'm tempted to suggest merging Relocation and Logistics/Administrative Support into one thing? Like a magic pass that entitles you to stay for free indefinitely at any hotel/inn/etc (with some limitations-you will be prioritised below a paying customer if the place is full, and can't book in advance).

Marlinspike is already amazing-If I had another choice, that would have been it. Professional combat training with lots of weapon access and bodyguards sounds great.

As for totally new suggestions:

-Experimental Technology: Get access to am article of absolute bleeding-edge technology monthly. Can be anything from VR to self-driving cars. Can't be sold, leakers get barred from the service. Can't choose specifics due to secrecy, but you can request particular 'sectors'.

-Some kind of super-serum kind of thing. Nothing excessive, but keeping you perpetually slightly above peak human physically. No especial resistance to disease or anything though, so overlap with Caduceus is minimised.

Could probably come up with more if you want.

Honestly for skills I'm not entirely sure what to do, so I went with the ones that I think would make things easiest. Sure a fight might be easier if I had weapon use, but I figure knowing how to deal with my enemies seems a bit more important for that. For survival I think things would be easier if I could relax and recover between things happening. For the quests, learning dark secrets seems fun, and challenging a dungeon is what adventuring is all about, slaying a dragon is similar in there, and I think Enhance on my spear should be good, provided I get a good clean shot a it.

For my weapon it's tempting to go with some combo of enchantments, but really I like the options I went with, even if they aren't much of a combo really. Though I suppose my weapon would be great up against any kind of dark mage and pretty good against mages in general.
