Infinity is the only alternative that I would personally consider. The models are pretty neat, and the smaller skirmish scale means that building a force would be easy.

The problem is that I don't know a single person who plays it, even though I think my FLGS does carry some of the models for it.

This. I don't live in a big city. The FLGS only plays 40k, even though they have some WarmaHordes models too.

There are games like Beyond the Gates of Antares, that function a lot more like 40k in army composition, they just aren't as popular. But if people don't try them out they never will be.

Infinity community building is super hard. The terrain requirements for one table and people actually struggling with the rules are huge entry barriers.

I personally think infinity is just as bad at 40k, but for completely opposite reasons rulewise

This is why there are so many complaints about 40k. Because they're all idiots who:

- Play the game "competitively" or just because of the rules
- Don't paint their armies or play on ugly boards

I'll have to see if I can find an excuse to visit the area sometime and lug some minis along with me. The only matches to be found in Interior Alaska are 40k and Sigmar with the occasional outburst of X-Wing, but that hasn't stopped me from buying three full factions of Dropzone and Dropfleet because I liked the minis.
