There's an old saying (like, pre-civil war old) that I find holds up remarkably well today.

To explain, people in the areas of the US most pervasively associated with racism (i.e. the south) also have the highest minority populations. Most "racists" live and work with blacks and hispanics every day. It's hard not to see them, individually, as like yourself when you work in the same factory or whatever.

Most people have a pretty good capacity for making excuses when something seems to contradict their worldview. Orwell called it doublethink. You tend to hear things like, "He's cool, but his kind in general..." or "I don't hate blacks, just niggers."

It bugs me how few people know the backstory behind that picture.

The one being executed was a North Vietnamese soldier. Notice how he's in civilian dress? Legally, that means he is afforded no protection under the Geneva Conventions. Summary execution as a spy is perfectly fucking legal.

And the guy shooting him, who was a police chief or something like that, lost his whole family (actual civilians) to an attack the executed was a part of.

It bothers me how much that pic is the poster child of vietnamese war crimes when it was a perfectly lawful response to a north vietnamese war crime.
