Man I loved playing this.

The excitement of possibly getting a loot card in each pack also made me buy it like crack when I was younger, much more so than mtg.
>>
>>52835496
I just enjoyed the format. It was so different, having a hero who defined your deck. Felt nice. And dungeons were fucking awesome. I didn't have a good PC so I traded my loot cards for lots of good cards.

I now have a 90kg box of these cards and no one to play with

Zatch Bell.. What I liked about this was that there were "spell books" that held all the cards in your deck. And I found that cool for simulating the battles in the show and just in general for a card game. Just the little big of a prop made me sort of "get into character" and get really enthusiastic while playing it.

Despite how long it's been discontinued there's still a fairly active (albeit small) community online that plays using Google docs and a web app. They have tournaments and a bunch of maps that the community deemed balanced and fun for competitive play. There's also a committee of players that regularly release new units (using 3rd party minis) that are deemed event-legal.

It's by far the most active dead game I know of
>>
>>52847460
ZB is such a unique example of a TCG too. You literally stack the deck when you play and choose how much you mill, since your mill is equivalent to MP gain. It's such a fucking esoteric idea that I think that plus the show's lack of popularity is what kept it from taking off over here.
>>
Doomtrooper, that was my jam back in the day.

I also played that D&D card game, Spellbreaker.

i had a harry potter TCG booster set and i had no idea why as a kid.

Worse, I tried to figure out what the rules could possibly be and never got to do a real game as a kid.

but last year a friend of mine and I got together and managed to jigger the whole fucking thing based on recorded tourneys (WotC loved blogging play-by-plays back when internet was barely 2.0, the game only had Wizards attention for like 2 years though)

and now it's an upload on tabletop sim with shitty watermarked card art from individual card sale sites

but we finally played it when we finished, and it was... it was real? it felt like a great mystery of my childhood was solved.

no plans to update it to include various expansions or other wizard decks, though.

I have similar stories to yours with several card games that never took off and are now lost and forgotten.
The most notable one for me was Star Quest, a space-themed one from '95. I had a bunch of cards for it when I was a kid and thought they were cool as hell. I doubt that I ever played it properly though.

Similarly, the Wheel of Time card game which came later and involved a bunch of blank dice you had to put stickers on.

This game was definitely one of those "woah, this resource system is way too complex for the 8-year old mouthbreathers we're marketing to." Getting to the back of your book was death, but turning pages generated mana, and you could only cast what was open to you. Aside from the stupid fucking character-specific cards, it was pretty great.

Arena of the planeswalkers. MTG heroscape. Some things are different, but there's still squads/solos, combat is virtually identical, terrain is the same. Now there's colors, so you pick a commander/planeswalker and x points of dudes, and summon them throughout the game, and you also have a small hand of tricks you can play to affect die rolls, enhance units, etc.

I never played it, I1m just comparing it to the cards I had.

When the game started (in 1995) 2 mana 1/1 flying (flying is equivalent to MtG haste... it's basically a kinda crappy MtG clone) was an average, if kinda dull creature, probably a common.

That's a rare 2 mana 4/3 flying creature that destroys a card when you play it and you get mana back equal to the destroyed card's summoning cost.

I was curious about what other cards are like, and card counters (as in not spells or creatures, or artifacts only, but any card) at the common rarity cost only 1 mana.

I have no idea how the game is meant to be played now, but the powercreep is ridiculous.

Would have close games with my T. Hawk, Kazuki and Rock Howard decks but as soon as I built King I ran away with every single contest. Not my fault people can't handle throws.

When I stopped playing the "best" card in the game was a 2 mana sorcery that had "search your deck for a 2 mana card and put it into play as if you have summoned it".

Then again, there's also a bunch of 0 mana counters.

It really is legacy magic, where deck building is early game, coin flip is mid game, first turn is late game.

A little surprised nobody has posted this since from what I can tell it was slightly popular in some circles for a while. Still, outside my local friend group I don't know anyone who played it.

I used to run pic related in a Children of the Light/Trolloc army deck that would divide and conquer by sending tons of lethal damage up to the pattern challenge every turn, while using politics dice to win other contested challenges. It worked pretty well but still got its shit pushed in by light speed taveren decks, just like everyone else.

If you know some people who play it, yes. Starter box has everything you need to make a good list, plus now the game is discontinued you can find expansions for cheap prices.

>>52857375
People in the KY area obviously don't know shit.

Some models are better than others, but nothing is massively overpowered. The white dragon for instance hits like sledgehammer, but moves like a train. You just keep out of attack range, pick off everything else, then swarm her. Solar Angel? He's good, but doesn't get anything other than Concentrate to modifier his attack rolls. Mirror Image being the best upgrade in the game? Too bad it's timed, so either wait for it to run out, or spam small levels of damage to force your opponent to waste it or just take the hits.

I'd love to know what these 'auto-include' models your group think are. They'd get hammered by any reasonably-skilled player with that mindset.

>Localize Japanese TCG

>Pokemon was more fun
Not during the time both of those card games existed it wasn't, IMO.

A friend and I recently busted open some old Pokemon Base Set starter decks and some Digimon starter decks. Pokemon was dull, time consuming and had very little opportunity for strategy. Also decided from the start if someone had a type advantage.

The Digimon one was actually pretty fun, wrapped up relatively quickly and replaced raw luck with predicting what your opponent was gonna do. The blind pick mechanic and being able to fix your hand at the cost of shortening your Digimon's lifespan made it feel more like a decision-making game than "play whatever you happen to draw".

There are cards to brute force over the RPS weaknesses (meaning if the you think the matchup is going to be initially in your favor its better to stockpile counter/negation cards instead of stat boosts), and winning at a disadvantage gives you more points which is cool. It was janky but I had fun.

Later era Pokemon TCG is way better, though.

Wheel of Time CCG It was pretty fun if you liked the books. One player would play Rand, but there were several version to complement deckbuilding strategies. The other player would play one of the Forsaken. You built up armies and fought battles using politics, intrigue, combat, and one power dice as the game headed towards the Last Battle.

Every turn a war over the fabric over the pattern would happen. You had to send characters and troops to fight in that challenge, or other challenges played by players, or leave them home to recruit more resources. It wasn't exactly balanced (Tear was so shitty it wasn't even funny, some Forsaken were kickass and others useless), but it had a fun tempo.

I had a friend that loved the game but never read the books, and he built an Aes Sedai deck where his strategy was to have Rand Summon Elaida on turn 1 and just build enough one power dice to balefire the enemy commander if they ever showed up to the battlefield. It worked pretty well but triggered our collective autism to have Elaida working for Rand.

It must not be a coincidence.

It was a line of modular action figures, assembled with ball-joints and pegs. There were a bunch of kinds, like undead, elementals, Cyberpunk humans and cyborgs, beast men. They added mages and lizardfolk towards the end of the toyline's life.

All of them came with a little (also modular) hex die that you assembled based on the parts you used for Your Dude. Damage would chop off parts to the figure, and the first one to lose everything completely lost. I think everyone had to use the same number of parts.

Hecatomb is great. it's like a very slow MTG, but suited for multiplayer well, because there's no player elimination, you just play until someone's stolen enough life from other players to be the winner. Also, creatures are made from pieces of other creatures, and damage is dealt from the top down to creatures (obviously there's tricks).

It's really solid.

This game was beyond its time. It was basically the decipher lotr game, but with a map. Really neat rules about placing traps to fuck with your opponent, and finding your own gear to make your shit work. The biggest issue IIRC was that the necessary cards (sidekicks, guns, etc) were not easy to come by in packs.)

>>52857720
Pirates of the Spanish Main was my jam for a long time. We played a variant where you started with 20 points of ships, and gold would build new ships at 1g = 1point. The goal was to be the last person to have visited all of the center islands in our map (so, to have control of everything.) you'd need like 10 ships to reliably do it, so that meant farming up like 90 goddamn gold and building a fleet. took an entire evening, but it was great. Eventually it was just too much of a pain to store the fuckers.

>>52859809
Maplestory was cursed by its own license. What a neat programming game. You literally programmed what you could do each turn. Boosters were a goddamn nightmare. 8 cards, and at least 1, and up to 4 cards in a pack were "code cards" to use with the MMO. No motherfucker, i don't care about the game, I just want to pay less than 50 cents per common in this pack, fuck.

alright. This is probably the most fucking weird and obscure one.

Fight Klub. It was decipher's last game. A weird thing that has three different types of resources you keep track of with glass beads, but you also can pay threshold costs with beads printed on cards you own. Is pretty light and small, but I still am not sure i fully grok the strategy. The best part of it by far is the licenses. So weird. The third set was terminator, but i could never find any of it.

It was the unholy trinity of impossible to search/find information for, unrelated to all of it's licenses in every way, and in an OMG TOTAL REVOLUTIONARY marketing strategy, decipher decided to not sell it anywhere but on their site. Which was invite only. The community had to invite you with a code card, that you could use to join the site. no selling to stores or distributors.

I would honestly be surprised if there was very much of the game at all, made, ever.

People actually played that game. Also, if you want an old dead game, go get a 4-pack of it. It's like $1 a character/deck now.

This is Doomtown Range Wars. It was Disk Wars, but with deadlands characters and factions. And character activation order was done secretly with cute little cards. I actually also really liked the gunplay in the game, it was a lot easier than the missile system in oldschool diskwars. In this you just chucked brass or silver bullet coins (1 and 2 damage each) and a trio of joker coins. Bullet coins that were heads were shots that landed, and if all three jokers ever came up heads, it was a headshot and instant death for the target. There were also rectangular building tiles and spells and stuff that really bogged down the game, but overall I really liked it.

Cookie Fu. What a cool, but poorly executed concept. You built a character out of dice, and rolled dice each turn to answer your opponent's last attack and launch your own. There's punch and kick, block and grab, throw and chi. Punches need to be blocked, kicks can be grabbed (i don't recall if block works on kick, but there was something dumb about it), grabs and throws together are unblockable damage, and chi is used to cast spells, which actually fucking came in fortune cookies, and were on fortune slips. It was a weird game because when you took damage, you lost dice, so unless you could close the health gap in like one turn, the game fell the fuck apart-- just like dragon dice, or daemon dice, or any other game where losses took away your ability to roll well enough to prevent further losses. Also, this game doesn't have enough special dice-- a booster provided like 4 basic dice (1 of each icon), 2 special dice (chance to lose one type and double up on something), and 1 rare die (which would be 2 and 2 on 2 icons, or 3 of an icon. Building a synergistic character was the bulk of the game. Weapon expansion was supposed to make the game cooler, but never surfaced. Saw the proto dice for it at like gencon 09 or something.

Clout Fantasy.

it was a dexterity game about throwing poker chips onto the table. Had a cute little fabric tape to measure range, but the goal was to place chips worth VP onto the field, then keep them on the table until the end of the game.
Strongholds were worth the most VP, but needed to have friendlies near them to keep them on your side (or something, it's been like a decade).
It seemed to be a big hit at Gencon the year it came out, but outside of cajoling my friends into playing it a few times, i never played it or saw it anywhere else.
>>
>>52865340

reading up on it it all sounds very dodgy indeed.

Not to mention it seems to not even be a CCG if what I'm reading is right. They only sold the stuff in complete set boxes so if anything it was an LCG with a ridiculous business model.

Not to mention the cards look kinda awful. Boring film/promotional stills with some really simple stat boxes slapped over them in the most lazy way possible.

Z-G
This was a favorite of mine, mostly for the figures. What a cool idea, action figures with cards to represent their gear! This was similar to Xevoz, kinda, that as characters lost their gear, they lost parts.
Where it diverged was that these figures were minis, and you measured range with cards to move and attack with them. There were also boosters that came with different types of the same gear (eventually there was supposed to be a gear booster too for new figure bits), pilot cards, skills, terrain cards, and other actions and things.

The main problem with Z-G was that the rules were kinda flexible and iffy, and that the site never solidified them or released an FAQ. I was actually a "Z-Marshal", or demo team rep for the game, and I never once got a real FAQ from the company to help run demos. I stumbled through a few and called it quits.

It actually was worse than a CCG or LCG, because each box had playsets of the common cards, and 10 of 30 possible rares. So if you wanted the good shit for your deck, you... what, ended up with 3 playsets of the commons? that's fucking dumb. ADDITIONALLY, in set two and three, characters were rare, so you wouldn't always get the characters you wanted. In a $30 box. -_-
>>
>>52865566
fucking mermaids were the only consistent faction. thats kinda the problem with a game about the players actual physical dexterity, then having a faction that can mitigate that.
still it was fun and you reminded me of fun times, thanks

Shadowfist.

Shadowfist might not belong in this thread because it has a fucking diehard cult following. It's like the VHS rental shop kung fu movie of CCGs. Both in theme, production value, and quality. It does multiplayer stuff exceptionally well, it flows decently, but there's a lot of bombtastic shit that you'll not believe got printed, and it seems like with the right one card that's immune to X or does double damage to Y, you might see an entire faction fall apart.

There's a box set that comes with 4 preset decks that was its last release to my knowledge, and is also a very good play, if you can convince your friends to learn an entire CCG for a random afternoon or two.

On the Edge
This is another culty, weird game, but a little more actual literal cults, and illuminat-style shenanigans. Characters have several values they can start fights with, if I remember properly, and those conflicts can do different things, with the goal of the game to control enough influence/whatever points to take over the island nation you're going to end the world from, or whatever the fuck.

It's like... neo-tokyo-cuba. It's all over the place thematically, and the art takes MASSIVE jumps from almost colored pencil sketches to pages of THE MAXX comic to unused spelljammer art or something.

Please ignore the stargate boxes. both in this image, and in your gaming life.

So in that pic, the brown and green dice are the fortune cookie/chi dice?

When things are weird and entertaining and neat and unique like that, I want someone to come up with other rules that make use of 'em. Maybe I should brainstorm ways to implement it as something like a luck die and talk to the GM, but really I want a whole set of rules to, say, run an RPG with those dice.
>>
>>52865968
All of the dice can provide chi, but the fortune die determines who has initiative in each round, and also has some bearing on getting a wild result on your first turn of each round. The fortunes themselves are the slips, and you pick a set amount of them (1 per four or so dice you play with) as moves your character knows.

Secret Warrior here! They have a kickstarter like every year for a new set. I back them every time even though u never get a chance to play. It's so great with 3 or 4 players, but not great with 2. I might be able to cajole one other person in to learning a weird ass ccg, getting two people to give in at once is a tall order
>>
>>52878790

>>
>>52879311
It is. I have maybe two dozen unbroken breakeys and it's getting to the point where I kinda dont want to play anymore and run out of pieces.
>>
>>52864568
I don't exactly how it's played. It's been like 15 years, but I remember that you would chose a character to build a deck around. The Undertaker, in that picture was the physical one, there was a magical one (I think pyromancer), and a sneaky/thievy one that I forget the name of. You would build a deck of action and attack cards, as well as several rooms in the Crypt, which are those hexes. IIRC both players had to include one exit room and one key card, which you needed to play to exit the Crypt. The first one out or the last one standing won.

In long at it now, dat graphic design. They should have really chosen one for and stuck with it

Firestorm was the greatest card game I could only ever convince my little brother to play. A game could take 3+ hours especially since we never played enough to REALLY
get a handle on the rules. It was a 4x card game, really. Each player was a faction with their own solar system, and you won by either reaching 40 tech, conquering all the opponent's homeworlds, or some alternate win condition on other cards. The center of the table between solar systems was the Firestorm, which was intergalactic wormhole whatnot. You could develop worlds, put ambassadors, captains, spys on ships. Man, I might have to try and break that game out again.

>>52864391
That was me! haha, I forgotten about that. The fact that we're all Anons here makes it all the more awesome when paths are crossed again.

I'd love for Spycraft to get an LCG relaunch. Though it REALLY needs some rules clean up. The nested Reacts and counter-Reacts on top of some really strange card interactions created a lot of unintended consequences.

One of the worst unintended consequences was with a Level 2 Bloodvine leader, he had a trait that said any enemy Agent that is Baffled takes +2 to the TN of all actions. If an Enemy Leader gets Baffled while the BV Leader is in play they have to Bravado to activate (flipping over) any agents as Activating is a React Craft action, making all agents cost at least one card, possibly two if the Leader does not meet the expense of the agent being activated. I abused the hell out of that Leader to win Worlds at Gen Con.
>>
>>52857720
One year at either Gen Con or Origins they gave away two or three booster packs in the goody bags they handed out. A buddy and I set up a bunch of ships from the packs in the middle of an aisle and watch as people would walk up on it and then scramble and jump to avoid the naval battle in progress. It was funny as fuck.

Eventually as they weaken the Doubt, they can learn to manifest their dream-selves into the real world via magic.
