>Your local spacefaring part/IOM starts travelling and exploring worlds in their local science fiction setting
>Suddenly whilst they are taking note of something in another sector, they get reports of an entire inhabited system going dark
>Heads over there immediately
>Suddenly, they are assaulted by a deafeningly loud nose that rings through their skulls, and sounds like a voice repeating the word "DIE" over and over again
>Translator states that it is having difficulties translating the language of these entities, and that there are several lingual anomalies
>Hello extremely! I hope you like to play!

Your party/favorite spacefaring civilization is unfortunate to encounter the Orz. What happens /tg/?

Ur-Quan are totally fucking radical. A race of huge predators who freed themselves from pyschic tyrants through horrid self-torture in a galactic crusade for freedom that split into genocide and tyranny? Most villains wish they had half the same backstory

I'd say they're only dangerous when startled.
>>
>>52830459
Another interesting thing to note is that the Ur-Quan DON'T see themselves as being evil, or at least the Kzer-Za don't. they see themselves as "protecting" civilizations from the dark reaches of space by enslaving them. And considering that things like the Orz exist, they aren't exactly wrong about that.
>>

I use Orz as the baseline for communing with the higher planes.

>>

Kzer-Za barely freed themselves from D'nyarri. Orz considers the only race to escape enslavement to be amusing prey, and Arilou to be mildly annoying.
I doubt that overgrown spiders could really save anyone from Orz or his cousins.

Not really a 'threat' I guess, but more of an inconvenience. Whenever the Arilou start *jumping in front* they prevent the Orz from having their *parties*, which is bad news for EVERYONE. Also I wouldn't call what the Orz are the *fingers* of a "person" per se. That implies that we can understand what it truly is.
>>
>>52837005
Word of god

><+Cap`n`Kyth> One thing I've wondered - is Orz the same as 'Them', or is Orz "competing" with 'Them' over the Androsynth (like food?), or protecting the Androsynth from 'Them' - by *pulling* the Androsynth away before 'They' can find the Androsynth again?
><+PR3> The Orz is part of Them, the projection of Them into TrueSpace.

><LordR-man> Fwiffo- What really happened to the Androsynth in sc2?
><Fwiffo> In regards to the Androsynth: They were snagged by the entity who/which projected its fingers into our dimension (which looked to us as the Orz.)
>>
>>52837065
Oh I know what the Orz really are. Just saying that it can't be described as a "person". It's an unfathomable demonic monstrosity from *below*, that seeks to *party* with everything in the universe. It is something that by very definition we can never comprehend.
>>
>>52837503
Ah ok, I misunderstood. At the very least we know that the Orz are a single extra-dimensional entity that seeks to interfere with our dimension's inhabitants for some sinister reason.

The Arilou are clearly antogonistic to them but they're surprisingly ok with you bringing Orz with you to meet them.

>>52854309
That's the best thing about Orz, and a good example of how awesome SC2 writing is. On the first glance, they're cute fish...things with funny incomprehensible speech, but upon a closer inspectiong they're some kind of eldritch monstrosity from another dimension that wiped out an entire race and whose purpose and motivation is impossible to determine.

The same game also had the Mycon, who also get freakier them more you learn of them. Although they at least have a fairly mundane orginin in artificial organism created for terraforming planets, whose original programming got corrupted over the thousands of years after the disappearance of their creators untill it became some weird religious mission to wipe out every inhabitable planet in the galaxy.

I think that's one of the most terrifying things when first making contact with the Orz. You meet these strange fish.. things who have silly dialogue, and even more silly music. But then you listen closely to what they are saying, realizing the darker implications in their words. Then you realize the music is literally just a demonic voice saying DIE in various pitches and tones, and it quickly becomes apparent that the Orz are a demonic monstrosity from what may or may not be Hell, (if you take the whole the Orz come from *below*, and the Arilou *quick babies* from *above* to mean Hell and Heaven respectively). Doesn't help that their voice has a demonic aftertone to it that you might not hear at first due to it blending in with the -other- demonic voices in the background music. Yeah, Orz are pretty fucking terrifying.

Compared to the Kohr-Ah, the Kzer-Za are pretty great they are pretty helpful to the races that don't make trouble like finding the Syreen a new planet, and allowing the Chenjesu and the Mmrnmhrm despite what they end up doing, all though I don't think they predicted that. They are definitely one of the best examples of grey villains in any media.

They did, but they also stated that if Humanity was dumb or reckless enough to reveal themselves, they can, and -would- be seen. And Humanity despite all the warnings, stupidly decides to go to Androsynth space and reveal themselves to the Orz, and their *cousins*. That's why the Orz were so happy to see you. They couldn't *smell* you so they couldn't see you at first, but you just went up and delivered yourself like a nice gift-wrapped package, right at their front door.

Kyubey is WAY nicer and more comprehensible than the Orz. Kyubey can at least be understood, and if you ask him questions looking for answers, he will give them to you, whilst leaving some tiny (from his perspective) details out. The Orz? You can't even talk about the original inhabitants of the star-cluster they have come to inhabit without them threatening to do the same thing to you. Kyubey may be a dick, but he won't harm you, at least not directly. He and his kind don't do anything REALLY devious or evil until Rebellion, and that's mostly due to their sheer apathy to most matters not concerning energy harvesting, and the fact that until Rebellion, something like the Law of Cycles hadn't even existed. Kyubey will fuck you over yes, but in a very indirect way, and will never usually take action himself. The Orz will fucking *dissolve* you for inquiring too much into what happened to the last group of people they murdered.
>>
>>52864022
So it wasn't the reason, it was a simple strawman of it you made to fit your anger. Good to know.
>>
>>52864382
True.
>>
>>52830627
How do they build their ships? If they are just projections of a single entity from another layer of reality why was their gimmick power-armoured marines as boarding parties?

Since they are *many fingers* of a greater being if you utterly destroy enough of them will that begin to have a negative effect on said entity?

Not sure it did. It just noticed them, which seems to be pretty bad for the species in question. I mean, the entity says that it's been making sport of hunting those sentinent stones ever since the sentinent milleu fell and they had to withdraw to another dimension.
>>
>>52871692
Not so much hated as much as it noticed the Androsynth due to them messing with some higher dimensional shit and grabbed them.

You have to do some digging through the conversation trees, but there's pieces of dialogue that suggest they think they're doing you a *favor* somehow.

http://www.sa-matra.net/quotes/orz/

>You are so *sticky*. You cannot *slide* like Orz from *outside* to *inside* and *in between*. It is sad, but Orz can *pull* the *campers* after being *connected*. This is soon. Orz are trying to *pull* the Androsynth, but they are so *silly*, they do not want.

>Next it is the *party* and you will *become*.
It is best. After this you are so *happy* you do not ask the many questions. Do you anticipate? Yes! You do!

>/tg/ has a whole bunch of people bringing up Star Control 2 in appropriate threads
This makes me happy.

>>52868774
The way I see it, they're material projections of a material entity, sorta like pushing a sphere through a 2D plane (except the sphere is a hand, and the shifting circles from a flatlander's perspective are Orz). So they need material ways to get around, and their need for "water" might say something about the greater entity's natural habitat.

>>52831296
It's great. Get the Ur-Quan Masters port, it's generally an improvement over emulating the original.
Here's some advice:
>Have a notepad handy, take lots of notes (about coordinates, plot points, visited systems, etc.) and keep them organized
>Train in Super Melee (the battle minigame accessible from the menu) until you have a good grasp on the battle system, then train some more later to understand how allied and enemy ships work
>Save often, especially before making contact with a new species, in case of unsalvageable diplomatic screw-ups. You have like 50 slots available, use them.
>Keep spare resources and the room for them.
>If there's *one* spoiler you should know before you dive in, it's this: the game progresses in real time and you will get a game over after a certain date. Grinding if you need to, but don't waste time being greedy, and always pause instead of leaving the game running.
>The "find system" command is your friend (default "/" key). Also, read the manual.
Have fun!

They are yet another race of scary fuckers. They have little to no interest in this universe, aside from humans. This interest was intense enough for them to alter human evolution (who knows how long ago and on what species of hominid exactly), to influence various human cultures, to protect them from Orz-like beings in other ways, perhaps they even messed with some other races or events to ensure the survival of humanity. They are even willing to die for that... If they actually die in our universe. I believe their stated goal was to grow the humanity into a species resembling their own.

With this level of investment, they may be progressors, they may be grooming humans to be some sort of servant race, or this may be their bizzare way of reproduction (possibly via possession/mindmeld).

The Kzer-Za are at least savable, and would be valuable assets against whatever the next threat could be, the Kohr-Ah less so, they are just too dangerous to be left alive.
>>
>>52890643
they ar both evil, not sure uf salvageable, but understandable

i have the theory that if an actual secuel was made, you could recruit atleast some Kzer-za to your side if you rescue/help the Taalo,

>>

The actions of the Ur-Quan can be explained, yes. But nothing excuses them.
>Cool motive, still murder
And to go as far as to say they're justified, you'd have to be kinda nuts.
>>
>>52890693
A lot of the hierarchy races seem to be pretty content with life as slaves the Kzer-Za seem to generally leave them to their own lives and only call them in for combat, ultamatly I feel like they could be reasoned with and salvaged in time, the Kohr-Ah are a different story they are so zealous that it would be impossible to reason with them.
>>
>>52890822
it would need a very serious act of goodwill and help to atleast nudge them to good-ish side

Option 1

>They choose a perfect waifu for me.
>Provide flowers and a pleasing fragrance for our date
>Plus sex pheromones
>Prepare a delicious meal
>Sing gentle music
>Whisper relationship advice

or

Option 2
>Release sex pheromones for me and my gf
>Encourage us to explore our desires.
>Helpful sexual / relationship advice.
>Provide free reproductive health

Option 3
>Release sex pheromones.
>Act as perfect alien waifu
>Doesn't care what I look like because I'm alien anyway
>Music, fragrance, delicious meal
>Jerk/suck me off, providing total release of unfathomable pleasure.
>Find girl, do the same thing
>Release my sperm into her.
>Helps raise the kids.

Which honestly isn't too different from what the pollinators do for flowering species.

They seem like the creepy child molester in the white van who saves you from the serial killer. Yeah, thanks and all, but... eww.

Either that or they're some far-future humans who've traveled back in time to ensure that the timeline results in their emergence.

I do miss the nivenesque sci fi where aliens are genuinely alien, non-human, but still have some internal logic and comprehensibility. It was a moment in sci fi history right between cliche rubber suited aliens and cliche "you will never understand them" aliens who are generically incomprehensible. Both extremes are lazy cliches.

Aliens in SC are irrational and weird by our standards, but if you take them on their own terms what they do makes perfect sense.

Trollpost, but a decent observation.

Planet surveying is more interesting than just a test of patience here, so that's something Bioware could have learned from.

Ship to ship combat rather than ground combat which ups the sense of scale, but personal combat makes sense for a Bioware game about individual characters rather than species and fleets.

The alien races are far more varied and interesting in SC2, but again, ME wants humanoid aliens for more realistic characters and readable emotions. (Not something that they've done a good job with implementing, but the intention is clear.)

They were a casual side-project to preserve human numbers in an emergency situation through sexy blue-skinned alien fucctoys.

When the humans got slave-shielded the greens saw their purpose of keeping the human species alive complete and bailed on the war and a race that held little direct importance to their goal (they already lost a hefty amount of their people and resources fighting until this point as they mention in the second game, warfare is clearly not the creepy fuckers bailiwick)

They got more unnerved after they finally found the Arilou and when investigating the Taalo mind shield and learning of a science team member commiting suicide and destroying a lot of the scavenged research. In the end the Captain decided they needed them as allies now and that any danger they posed could be addressed later
>>
Man the future humans in this series were cunts. Creating a slave-race of artificially born neutered clone-men to lord over and do all their work (apparently it started off religiously-motivated but it grew beyond the cult until all of human civilization was down with it?).

And made them smarter and stronger than regular men to boot then were somehow surprised when they managed to escape their unjust slavery... and then ended up joining with the massive empire the humans later ended up fighting, not even minding so much since the role of battle thrall gave them a chance to use their superior scientific and combat abilities to strike back against Earth.

Ah-DUUURRRRRRR!

It's kind of implied that they are full blown Angels, as the hinted with the Orz's statement of them coming from *below*, whilst the Arilou come from *above*. One of their names was even Enochian Angels. They seem to be protecting us at least and seem to be trying to uplift us to their level, but who knows what we might lose in the process.

I never got how people are hostile to the Arilou. Sure, learning you've been watched/have less agency is offputting, but they go to every degree to help humanity survive and have protected them from foul dimensional horrors. I'm willing to at least admit they might be good, after that.

It looks like one of their ships - and the shape of their ship is explained in-game as being due to their mind-control device that makes enemy crew abandon ship to join the Syreen as mind-controlled slaves.

Ergo, that is a mind-control gun, which is why it looks like their ships. Which look like huge throbbing orange sex toys, not pink!

That game disregards so many previous lore entries, and changes so many things, it might as well be an alternate universe. It also removed many of the cool features from the previous game, such as the unique music for each race, and a lot of the previous voicework from SC2 was either recycled, or straight up butchered to fit into the game.

Storytime and hoping I finish before falling asleep

Ok my group was getting burned out on a D&D campaign that was great but we had been invoked in for too long and we got it into our heads to try a sci-fi game which is when I thought up running this as a whole campaign. Heres a player rundown

>>The Captain-A huge Star Trek fan and the best roleplayer in the group.Pretty bright guy and all around boy scout who knows all the knots and everything. He has all the leader feats
>>Space Marine badass-Stereotypical REAL MAN player. Fairly good role player for a guy playing Brock Hardcheese or Chip Beefsteak. Loves boarding missions and drop ships in his power armor
>>Hotshot pilot. The Captains little bro IRL. Kinda spazzy but tries really hard. He is built to fly small ships but necessity forces him to run the Flagship
>>Autismo the engineer-Hotshots friend ride to the game and sack of protoplasm. Hes a little lazy but shows up every game. He likes SciFi enough to relish playing the Engineer. Basically a b/tard sitting in the engineering room. Loses a foot later on in hilarious fashion

I explain how the game is going to go. The PCs will be eager young space cadets straight out of the academy and into the great war thats been raging for a while. They actually want it to have a good Star trek style mix of action diplomacy Science exploration etc. and not just a whole lot of fighting. They make a characters with a good mix of skills and I give a full intro to the universe. They are staggered by the amount of alien races to have to remember but are excited by such a detailed backstory.

Of course ship they are supposed to serve on doesnt arrive.By the end of the week they are worried by the end of the first month they are freaked out. We then roleplay for a little while in the first session living on the Precursor facility with limited supplies no way of knowing what has happened or if they will be attacked at any point or die because they something broke down

Perfect setup. Please tell me none of them played star control
>>
>>52925961

The session was awesome because it was out of the regular game AND it swerved their expectations. We slowly RP various problems on the station and Autismos engineering skills end up coming up alot keeping things running while also looking for ways to salvage the only way off the planet which is with the Precursor ship. They end up spending 4 years on this rock [another difference from the game] but its more than enough to freak them out. When they finally get the ship operational they are stepping into the unknown in a way none of our other games had ever done. They figure that the battlefront has shifted and they are merely cut off from the alliance. The deafening silence that greets them when reaching Earth is even worse and the idea that the war is actually over and they lost left them dumbstruck

It goes pretty by the book for a while after that. They wanted to stop the probe alerting the Ur-Quan expecting a death sentence if it escaped but everything falls in line pretty quick after that. They beat the IllWrath ship gather resources and eventually meet Fwiffo. Its the first real encounter with an alien and they actually feel pretty bad for Fwiffo Getting him to join was easy

The Captain is eager to start rebuilding the "Free Star Alliance" and the first thing they wanna do is head straight to the Yehat, Now we are dealing with Star Trek fans here so they fully expect awesome Klingons that will still be fighting the good fight and are eager to join them. When they find out they are battle thralls they actually are pretty pissed. The Captain is usually cool headed the rest of the campaign but he completely loses his shit and he damn near insults the first ship they find into a full on fight. I felt like giving them a little bit of help so an officer on the Yehat ship sets up early "Shore leave" and ends up hopping over to their ship becoming a ally. I guess it helped me too since it let me hand a little more info their way and another NPC to play off
>>
>>
>>52925605
The doctrinal wars end, somebody spiders the precursor battleship and does whatever they want. Either way you're getting pasted.
>>
>>52926089

Thats the best part they knew nothing and figured I was just pulling all this stuff from some RPG resource or pre-written OGL adventure

>>52926149

Finding the Melnome was fun too.Once again outside of vidya context they can set-up other kind of deals and negotiation and essentially they end up brokering a trade agreement where Melnome will occasionally visit the station itself. I had to make them a little more merchanty since grinding for lifeforms wasent gonna fit and this worked great

The Crew wanted info on the enemies that surrounded them in space.Meeting the Phkunk was worth a laugh or two mostly talking with the Yehat officer about "What they hell is wrong with these guys?" and finding all the new age retro hippy stuff hilarious. They knew the swerve where they offer all the help they can was gonna be bullshit but are pretty happy they got a few ships and a funny shapred precursor thingie. The trip Spathi space went by the books up until the "Evil ones" when Chip Beefsteak decides to go on a hunting expidition. He had survival skills and damn it he was gonna use it. The Captain is interested by the Spathi because of the story of the rise of their tech and thinks they would be the super-scientists they need to break the slave shield over Earth. I chuckle inside with that part as the Spathi are MORE then happy to do that for the alliance they just joined after Big McLargeHuge just Ramboed the evil ones
>>
>>52926298
>thinks they would be the super-scientists they need to break the slave shield over Earth
Oh man you need to continue this.
>>
What the fuck are the Orz?
>>
>>52926298

Next was searching Androsynth space. I gave them the backstory in session 1 and they were fully expecting that this was gonna end badly.Recon could be good though after all it paided off in Spathi space right? It was either that or the VUX and they thought maybe they could diplomacy things and make it better.Appeal to their somewhat related humanity and mend fences and such. Well then a strange obviously non-Androsyth ship appears

So the Translation systems note that they cant properly decipher these creatures language and will use approximations. I was prepped for this hard and memorized as many Orz-isms as I could delivering the lines like a badly censored Tv movie. They arent too freaked out at first since its just silly fish aliens and they figure because they are so different from the rubber forehead or muppet type things they are used too they figure thats why they cant properly translate what they are saying. They seem so friendly and diplomacy goes well though. The crew has a lot of fun approximating the translation too. Brock Punchface in particular absolutely fucking LOVES them because the space capable power armor raids are too cool and the Howitzar is manly as fuck. Even pointing out how crazy it seems compared to conventional boarding tactics and how it seems like they dont care about the individual risk doesnt faze him

Then they ask about the Androsynth and the Orz get "Frumple" and warn to not talk about them. The collective "Oh shit" as they start putting the pieces together was fucking fantastic. The Captain knows theres more going on here but damn it they need help and a couple Hippybirds and Spathi scientists wont hold out if the base gets attacked before things get running. So he makes the deal while the rest of the crew just thinks we should bugger off and pretend we never met them. The Taalo mind shield goes off like the game but the PCs figure the shield might be something to help them deal with the Orz if things go south
>>
>>52926419
An extra-dimensional entity trying to push through into our universe, but most of their motives/methods can't be understood by communicating and to witness it would mean you're fuckin' next. It's one entity whose incomplete presence takes the form of an entire "race".
>>
>>52926361
>>52926448

The Spathi and Orz success really make the PCs feel like they are getting somewhere. Finding a Rainbow world along the way helped pay for more information and everyone really feels like the FSA is taking its first steps. The Rainbow worlds being full of valuable resources AND something the Space Jews want make the characters interested in finding more and possible finding some way to start harvesting all the resources past their little lander excursions They are able to make a few upgrades to the ship along with the info and are also feeling a lot more combat capable

Now ive avoided telling them all about the ship combat mechanics. They have the book info but ive heavily modded it because frankly a LOT of it is clunky as fuck and also doesnt work well with the ships in game. I work out the Speed/Turning ability with a simple system recharge rate based on engine power and roughly convert the "Crew" units to a combination or DR based shield and HP and a "Class" system for ships going Fighter>Scout>Small>Medium>Large>Dreadnaught. Anything Fighter based cant enter Hyperspace and anything less than Medium would need to fly in the Hyperspace bubble of a larger ship

This becomes relevant because they get a distress signal from an unknown race that they need to travel past Spathi space to investigate and apparently towards where the Ur-Quan are supposed to be. They are about to meet the Zot-Fot-Pik and have their first encounter with the BBEG race

One thing at a time/Im trying to remember a campaign of a few months at 4am and trying to keep it all in line from game to game. Im also having computer problems like crazy tonight and probably gonna have to finish it tomorrow because of this BS. Ive left out a few details too like meeting the Sylandro probes wanting to investigate Precursor tech and some of the more outlandish plans they had

>>52926633

So meeting the Zot-Fot-Pik was cool because it got them a little background on a new race not in the intro that had contact with the Chenjesu.. Its a small ally but it struck the PCs as cool because they were kinda small and obviously new to the Hyperspace age. They felt they had a responsibility to protect these guys. Of course hearing about a whole new species fighting toe to toe with the big bads is kind of amazing. After all their whole alliance lost to the Ur-Quan and the super-weapon so how amazing are these guys that they can stand up too them? I can tell they are imagining a meta-game scenario where the new player in the game is going to be key, The alliance is set but before they can exit Ur-Quan space they are intercepted by a huge Green ship

Ffirst contact with the Ur-Quan was wicked. I dropped my voice to near James Earl Jones levels gave the full "We are the Ur-Quan etc etc" bit communicated directly to their minds from the talking pets. They had heard about how dangerous the Dreadnaughts were and while they had upgraded the ship pretty well after a few sessions they still didnt know how they would fare against them. They get some info on the war that they wanted during the attempt at negotiation but when they refuse to surrender it turns into the first really meaningful battle of the game. Its fortunate that I made this battle happen on the edge because the fight is brutal. They win but lose some side ships and the Flagship is nearly crippled before they limp away. This leads to some fun RP stuff for a little while where theypatch the shipup

I liked the stealthy one. I once did a cloaked gravitational slingshot playing against a friend of mine. Kicked his ass with a single sweet maneuver; he usually beat me but we both talked about that move for months afterwards.

I liked both Ur Quan ships. The Chmmr Avatar is very good as well.

I was into Transformers when I was a kid in the 80s, so I really wanted to like the transformer. And the Orz rock, of course, but neither of those ships really worked out for me when I actually played them.

In SC3, the mycon ship was fun but my all-time favorite ship to fly was the Doog Constructor. Basically easy mode. You'd charge in, fly by with guns blazing, and then stay away jamming the repair button until you were fully repaired again. Sometimes I'd skirmish with easy ships just to top off my ships.
