I went up against GGA yesterday with my in progress Guard. It was an intense 2000 point Maelstrom game. About halfway through we shifted to using Escalation rules for his Shadowsword, which made a huge difference and gave him a fun time of destroying all my fun and important units. That made up for me seizing the initiative and grabbing 7 points right away.

The Psychic Phase was a comical battle of shutting each other down. We both rolled up Forewarning to give to our blobs, but more often than not, we denied the power. I think we only got to use it 2 times each despite getting it off every turn. The highlights for him were obviously the Shadowsword destroying everything. I didn't get a chance to do a lot of damage, but I managed to do my objectives.

I got very lucky and ended up winning by only 1 point. I rolled a 2 to see if the game went on, which saved me from being tabled.

Anyone play any fun games lately?

>>
>>52807718
It's been a slow creep to get to that point, and I don't think GW realizes what's fair to have as troops sometimes.

If they were capped at 1 weapon per 3 bikes, or just put a cap of 3 weapons if it's really that important to have a small squad be uniform, then they'd be less annoying.

What would also help is if Eldar jetbikes only gave a 4+ save. No real reason they have to have marine armor along with the toughness increase.

Doesn't help matters that Eldar Jetbikes are also special and faster than all other bikes and jetbikes. It would also be nice if you did have to have a bike HQ in order to access them as troops, but that wouldn't really change too much.

Ideally, you could have Guardian Windriders be 4+ armor, 17 points, and be limited to Catapults as the Troop choice, and then make an elite variant that can get those heavy weapons but is capped at a smaller size.

With 8th Edition coming out do you guys think GW will be able to balance all of the armies? I'm not asking you think they will, but if it's actually possible? I've only played for about four years so I've only ever known Tau and Eldar being filthy rape machines. Was the game balanced before now or has it always been this poorly done?
>>
>>52808383
its possible, but it requires a level of effort and testing and community involvement they aren't giving.
>>
>>52808383
>Was the game balanced before now or has it always been this poorly done?
Eldar have never been bad, they haven't always been top tier but they have never been bad or even mid-tier.

The fear is that, as GW isn't doing so well, they won't dare nerf popular armies because they fear losing customers.
>>
>>52808383
Any army can be OP if a player knows what list to pick and how to min/max to the fullest extent of WAAC.
It's not, really up to GW to balance the armies, it's up to the players.
>>
>>52808383
It will be shit like every edition. Since the competion sucks colosal balls GW will survive.
>>
>>52808383
40k doesn't need to be perfectly balanced, but it does need to be better than it is now. If they update everything all at once that should theoretically help, as staggered releases have been one of the largest problems with unbalance.
>>
>>52808437
Please make a WAAC list with Orks or more easy with SoB that can defeat Eldar or Tau WAAC.
>>
How scummy are Knights at lower points? I'm a new Skitarii player and as much as I love Dragoons, I can get a Knight for less than a squad of them so I'm up in the air between Dragoons or a Knight.

>>
>>52808383
It would be possible, but only if GW is actually willing to take a look at things. That said, there aren't really that many things they would need to change to bring things in line. Even just an overhaul for Tyranids/Orks to fix their point values and give them options, along with a Traitor Legions style update for both of them and guard would be enough to drag all of them up to being more solidly mid-tier.

Combine that with some nerfs to some of those top-level models and formations so that the top-tier isn't quite as strong, and you'd have things in a pretty good range.

Already I would say that CSM is on the level where it can really compete with vanilla marines, even excluding magnus. And that's an army that was tapering right on the edge of low tier against one that's in the top 4, and all it took was one supplement.

Yeah, they still have issues, but those issues are more a matter of design rather than power level. A couple point drops for the lesser used units and a general clean-up of rules and they'd be in a good place.

Besides, any Legion list that wants to not take god-specific psychic powers because of Mark restrictions could just ally in a Cyclopia Cabal for 3 Black Legion ones easily enough.

They're in a very good spot aside from Thousand Sons lists, but the same could be said of Chaos Daemons who have Tzeentch as an amazing top-tier force while the others aren't nearly as good.

The gap is much smaller, and the CSM codex has largely overcome most of its flaws.

I'm going to be playing for the first time in years next week and I need a hand filling out a 1850 point list for pure Sisters of battle.

So far I have:

+ HQ +

Canoness [130pts]: Combi-Plasma, Power Weapon (Axe), Relic - The Mantle of Ophelia, Replace With Ranged Weapon, Rosarius

+ Troops +

Battle Sister Squad [135pts]: Sister Superior x2
. Battle Sister x2
. Battle Sister w/ Special or Heavy Weapon: Heavy Flamer
. Battle Sister w/ Special Weapon: Flamer
. Immolator: Twin-Linked Multi-Melta

+ Fast Attack +

Dominion Squad [175pts] x2
. Dominion Superior: Combi-Melta
. Dominion w/ Special Weapon: Meltagun x4
. Immolator: Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer

Seraphim Squad [195pts]
. Seraphim x7
. Seraphim Superior: Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon (Axe)
. Seraphim w/ Special Weapons x2
. . 2x Hand Flamers

+ Heavy Support +

Exorcist [125pts] x2

+ Elites +

Sororitas Command Squad (C:IA) [175pts] x2
. Celestian: Combi-Plasma x4
. Hospitaller: Chirurgeon's Tools
. Immolator: Twin-Linked Multi-Melta

++ Total: [1545pts] ++

I have a lot of infantry still available with most heavy weapons, but no more rhino chasis. No new Celestine or rules for her either atm. I do have Coteaz and a generic inquisitor, along with a shooty henchmen squad. I've got a few priests and Jacobus. I can also put together some death cultists and I do have a squad of repentia.

I watched a couple of games tonight and there was nothing super cheesy, but it was fairly competitive. I will look at picking up Celestine and possibly an assassin, but for now I just want to use what I've got without proxying.

My main thoughts where coteaz, a priest, a heavy bolter retributor squad, aegis defense line and maybe another basic squad if there's still points left over.

3.7% Per trooper is 14.8% Per shooting Phase. Or about a 74% chance you accidentally kill one guy after 5 rounds of shooting.

I remain convinced that the best way to fix the game is to collapse everything into CAD and remove squadrons from the game. A riptide can be quite OP, but if you can't take more than 3 of them and doing so looses you access to crises and stealth/ghost suits, then it really isn't that bad.

BTW, if a Riptide activates countermeasures, can I use "Awaken the Machine" to shoot him with my battle cannon anyways? After all, the gun technically didn't fire to begin with.

Why do you have a power weapon in the Seraphim squad? Or a superior for that matter. You are not protecting old Celestine, so there is no point to have her.
>>
>>52808806
Invading people's worlds to destroy their homes, enslave their friends and kill their families is not funny, it's fucked up.

And at least the Imperium avoids killing civilians unless they absolutely have to. Unlike xenos filth they don't actively seek to torment the innocent.
>>
>>52808829
The actual model doesn't look bad at all though
>>
>>52808847
Yeah, that does solve a lot of problems with the current setup. I would say that the removal of Squadrons really just applies to Tau's giant battlesuits though. It's less obnoxious for Dreadnoughts and tanks and things like that.

Restricting things to CADs helps as well, since it limits LoW spam in a more direct way.

You would still need more fixes on top of that though, but it's a sensible start to make that puts everyone on more even ground for further changes.

They seized the initiative and I started to feel like an idiot for taking a single shot Shadowsword when there was just so much opposing me. And my lads suffered for it. Well besides the one Chimera that got immediately immobilized my opponent had an amazing first turn. Killed a Chimera with autocannons immediately. Murdered about 19 Guardsman out of my blob immediately as well. They ended up scoring about 8 points on turn one just based on all the cards I got so I was pretty sure I was fucked. No one that runs tanks really uses squadrons for a reason.
The only time squadrons come up is in your exact example because vehicles take hefty drawbacks from squadrons. That said, lesser vehicles, like whirlwinds, warbuggies and the like, gain from sqaudrons.
>>
>>52808913
Yeah, that's more of a problem with Thousand Sons specifically though, and is something with a lot of ways it could be fixed.

The first would be to discount the Rubric sorcerers that come in units, since they'll rarely roll a power they can actually use, and having a force weapon doesn't help with a slow and purposeful escort too often. Heck, just making it so that the Sorcerer is an optional upgrade might help Thousand Sons lists.

The alternative would be to make the Tzeentch powers for Chaos marines less garbage in general. Doom Bolt is the only one that ever sounds worthwhile, and the others aren't as good for a random sorcerer in a squad like that.

If the Tzeentch table had more blessings and buffs, it would work out better for a unit to have that psychic power as more direct support for them. Something to teleport the squad around to help their mobility, something to reduce enemy cover saves, anything that would actually help the Rubrics do their job rather than just adding more weird shooting.

>>
>>52808991
Or maybe the Tzeentch powers should really make up for the lack of firepower against certain targets that the rubricae have. Like a power that can actually clear out hordes (Firestorm doesn't do anything most of the time) something besides Doombolt that can lay down the hurt on things with a 2+ save and vehicles, a power that is good against monsterous creatures... They don't have to be OP or anything, but just be able to do decent damage against targets.

And the way psychic powers work should be changed. Less cumbersome, but also in such a way that you no longer have a bunch of low level psykers who just hang around all game, never casting anything, to providing warp charges for the handfull of powerfull psykers who actually cast things. Before 7th my Aspiring Sorcerers always got to at least try casting something, but right now I rarely have the Warp Charges left. They might as well be pink horrors at that point.

It immediately got immobilized which let it survive so long since it wasn't in the open. But in my turn I moved up my Chimera and Guard blob and moved my veterans into cover. I gave my blob forewarning to absorb some more shots and they FRSR straight into some conscripts and with the aid of a battle cannon did some pretty decent damage. But my Shadowsword was the true focus of my turn and it tried to take out the enemy warlord with a mighty D shot.

Hey I even toned it down too. A 2-5 in Escalation just blows up non superheavies so I nerfed myself. But on my opponents turn three they tried to react to the devestation. They moved their Command Chimera to get some cover from my fire and moved some Sentinels to support the Conscripts with a Chimera turbo boosting to get Behind Enemy Lines. Lucky lascannon killed my Executioner with two sixes in a row and in assault they killed my scions but I managed to win my assault as well.

On my turn three my Guard blob and Chimera moved up advancing to get Behind Enemy Lines as well. My tank commander moved back and my Plasma vets readied themselves to take out a Chimera. Nothing happened in Pyschic phase but shooting was eventful. Pask ended up going down to a battle cannon.

If I was not butt naked in the middle of my break I would look up the rules.

But basically they where a character that you could add to any squad for dern cheap. Their role beside having extra cool gear was to stay in the fight locking the enemy in combat while her sisters retreated safely.

Not sure if they did something once dead but I'm almost sure they did

Yes centurions. I have ML/LC devs atm, but I feel like it's a bit of a waste of their slow & purposeful, and their durability.

I'm genuinely curious because I've personally never tried to use it out of fear of looking like an asshole and...well...tanks don't work like that and I like my tanks acting logical.

Why a Meltagun and a Missile Launcher? At 500 points I don't think anything particulary heavy will be much of an issue, though the meltagun is actually useful, so that's not an issue. If you're planning on camping objectives with the other tac squad, then the Missile Launcher is fine as well. You have enoug points for 25 points more of upgrades, I'd say give your tac sergeant a Combi-melta to go with the other guy's meltagun, so if you go up against any vehicles or big stuff, you'll effectively have two melta shots for the turn.

SoB are fine power wise, they just lack variety. DEldar aren't quite as bad off as Tyranids and Orks, since there stuff isn't too overpriced, it's just overly reliant on Cover and that's a major weakness. The guard codex is great! Nearly perfect internal-balancing with the exception of the elites slots. The problem is it's an edition out of date and 7th Edition had a bad case of the power creep. Formations weren't even a thing when IG6E came out, there was no Mechanicus, I don't believe there was grav, and Tau weren't firing four times a turn. That means being mass-glanced to death wasn't an issue. And the orders system made the infantry ridiculously good for cost.

We're not shit, you guys just got some cool toys while we sat neglected with just our basic rules and the CAD to our name.

>>
>>52811603
I'm an engineer myself, and have always been facinated by Airships. Fun fact: They're one of the only machines on earth that directly benefits strength-wise as they grow bigger. Most constructs, even animals, grow relatively weaker with size. To the point that an Elephant can kill itself tripping over a rock but a Cat can survive a multistory fall.

Airships reverse that, because they're natural buoyancy and the fact that the outside air pressure matches the inner air pressure, and their load capacity increases with respect to volume instead of cross-sectional area like a car's axle or a plane's wing. Filled with Helium and using modern materials, they're stupid durable against punctures and impacts. But perhaps craziest of all is their ability to (with hybridization) carry hundreds of times more than any airplane, anywhere. I hear the military is looking at them again for drones, since drones are defenseless as hell anyways.

Of course everyone just looks at the Hindenburg and says "Lol! What a stupid idea! Now lets cram ourselves into a tiny metal tube filled with volatile liquids and hurl ourselves across the ocean at 400 kph!"
>>
>>52811839
Hmm...seems pretty good overall. You've got a decent amount of melta for taking out vehicles, and some nice assault Punch. I would say the powerfist on the Ironclad, if only because I think it'll help more than the Hurricane Bolter.

I feel like your model count is a bit low, thanks to having the Land Raider, Ironclad, and Terminators eating up a lot of points.
>>
>>52811725
It helps. But it's sort of a mid-edition patch that elevates us without really boosting us to the stupid levels of effectiveness other armies get. Emp's Wrath being the sole exception.

Look at the Emp's Fist: +1 BS, rerolls to vehicle damage, and a rather impractical ramming/tank shork bonus.
Compare to Riptide Wing: Only needs 3 riptides to our 5, no taxes, and lets the Tau shoot FOUR TIMES!
How about the Emp's Blade? Only new rule over CAD is preferred enemy (controlling objectives). Space Marines equivalent? Free transports!

But again, I don't see this as a guard problem. I see this as an "Everyone else gets power-creeped to hell" problem. Us horde armies in particular: Guard, Nids, Orks, are all really hurting for some love, here!

So about the admech..how come they have so much freedom to do what they want? why are they allowed to keep secrets from the Imperium?
Sorry im new but the more i read about them the more i think they would like to be on their own
>>
>>52812024
They can't exist on their own, just like the Imperium can't exist with out them. So they both just put up with each other for their own survival.
>>
>>52812024
Because the Admech is an empire within an empire and its essential for the Imperium as they are the only organization that seeks the reconstruction of lost technology while mainting everything technological.
>>
>>52812024
The admech may make all the weapons, but the imperium provides the hands to hold them.

I like it, when I first saw GK I thought interceptors would see alot of play with teleport homers for their terminators/paladins.
>>
>>52812104
Forgot to mention the list is 1850 on the nose. Interceptors are great, always felt they were underrated. Mobility and a S6 AP4 flamer is nice. The biggest drawback to the homers is they have to on the board before you can use them to deepstrike, but since I can't use the turn 1 deepstrike taking the two inquisitors it works out. Also have the option of scouting from the liber heresius.
>>
>>52811916
Have any recommendations? I was thinking about maybe dropping the LR and putting a locator beacon on my Drop Pod, but then they are limited in where they can go and have to hope they dont get shot off the board.
>>
>>52812024
Think of the imperium like the Austrian Empire. The Austrians post-Holy Roman Empire entered a steady decline. They failed to develop like other nations (like Prussia, now called Germany) and the many different ethnic groups the empire encompassed were slowly growing restless as the lower classes were exposed to modern concepts like self-governance.

The Austrian Empire cracked down on some (Which the imperium constantly does to rebellious planets), and made concessions to others. Eventually, the Austrian Empire become "Austria-Hungary", which is sort of like calling the current Human Empire the "Imperium-Mechanicum": Two distinct political entities that acted as one to the outside world but internally were very much fractured and prone to fighting. Never quite a civil war, but lots of power plays. And at least together they are a superpower: If they break up they risk being destroyed by the Space-Ottomans (Chaos? I guees?) and the Space-Germans (Tau I suppose).

Warning: All information recalled from a History class taken 5 years ago. Please consult your history textbook for a more accurate telling of the decline of Austria.
>>
>>52811844
Its not always fun and games with airships, it wasn't just the Hindenburg that scared people. Look at the R1O1 incident. People don't like them because they are unstable sometimes.
>>
I bought a bunch of used tau drones, but with no flight stands.

Should I base them on 25mm or 32mm?
>>
>>52812165
It would be a big save on points and would open up other options. Deep-striking them near the drop pod and having them wait out of sight for a turn may be the better option, plus it will allow them and the Ironclad to support eachother. I would recommend giving some of them Stormshields in that case though to help with survivability.

That would be an extra 200 points though, which could be put towards another tactical squad, or perhaps something else in a drop pod to add even more backline threats for your opponent to worry about.
>>
Looking to go to an 1850 points ITC tournament this weekend, how does my list look?
>>
>>52811948
Yea, I not to mention the infantry formations in the Cadia codex are insane. Re-Rolling the 1s on lasguns is nice though, especially with Stromtroopers. Although it is kinda muted by the fact they are really out done by vets in the Guard Codex.
>>
>>52812173
>All information recalled from a History class taken 5 years ago.
Am actual historian, can confirm this is a correct analogy. Though it's worth noting that even within other countries, such as Prussia, they had to do the same things to maintain the state.

It's a great idea, I love boots on the ground Guard. I have already completed a blob if 50 normal guys and the 2nd was Penal. I'd post them if I wasn't at work.
>>
>>52812313

No. You pay 250+ points to transport your melee deathstar, just like everyone else.
>>
>>52811764
I agree that Ogryn and Bullgryn are overcosted. They are tough and durable but they do like no damage. If Ripper guns were 18-24 inches and had Rending they would be great for their cost. If Bullgryns grenade launchers were 18-24 inches with Shred they would be worth it. Also if power mauls and Brute shields were a free upgrade or a 5 point upgrade they would be worth it.

Scions I think are nicely priced. Maybe 10 points cheaper would be good. They are one of the best units for our lack of mobility though. They nab me line breaker and far away objectives often.
>>
>>52812347
I wouldn't mind paying 250 points if it got me something decent, but land raiders are fucking terrible for their cost.

>>

My LGS does that for "events". Like, on tuesday which is 40k night anyone can play, but for specific events you have to have them painted.

I really appreciate that, as it tends to weed out a lot of jerks.
>>
>>52812259
Yup. It was a low fantasy 1940-50s e-regime RP game one of my friends was involved in and we were reading about it. They put in airships that fly on some mystery fantasy gas and walkers. Everybody is ok with it until the most powerful faction, who are conveniently dog people, got in a battle and wrecked the shit out of some dudes in an "airship battle". My friend was the one of the few human factions in a small Yugoslavia type country that was Balkinized by the fur fag people. Worried he inquired about these airships and found out they had 20 inch guns. Apparently the only way to kill them according to the GM was building enormous AA gun turrets, spending tons of money to get missile tech, or building airships. Hilariously bad.
>>
>>52812320
Whenever you have the time please post them. I'd love to see. I'm aiming for 40 Penal Conscripts and 40 infantry men. I've also got to get another veteran squad going. Im just missing some Scion beret heads.

At least Inquisition Land raiders can take psybolt ammo to actually do potential damage.
The point sink is in the damage potential of its cargo. The optimal henchmen melee warband would have 5 crusaders, 5 Flagellants, 2 priests, an Inquisitor and your 3 acolytes.
That's roughly 500pts that can tarpit nearly every unit in the game. If the warhymns work, then the unit shouldn't have to worry.
>>
>>52812397
A naval rifle that size would weigh over 150 tons. A hindenburg sized airship couldn't carry one as cargo, let alone employ one as a weapon. The most similar actual battleship turret, with a single 18" gun weighed 839 tons without ammunition.

Even if magic gas quadruples the lifting capacity of airships they aren't going to be carrying 20 inch guns.

Though I suppose if that were the case that could probably have 1 20 inch gun and have really funny long range gun duels with each other.

They are air or blood tubes. When going to the nose or mouth, they carry extra bursts of oxygen. On the Acolyte Hybrid's legs, it's carrying blood from one leg area to another.

Their alien biology knucklefucks their hybridized human form such that they need extra circulation & airflow support to operate normally.
>>
>>52812564

Flagellants are good because they have a bunch of attacks at S5 that can force saves onto units through volume.

New player here with a few questions.

First, I've been looking through some different army lists, and it seems like fucking /everything/ has Fearless. Is Fear (and other similar shenanigans) even worth taking into account when looking at units, or should I just go for raw firepower?

And also, two of my friends who are getting into the hobby as well seem keen on playing Grey Knights. What kind of bullshit should I be expecting to get thrown my way from GKs?
>>
>>52813116
>Is Fear (and other similar shenanigans) even worth taking into account when looking at units,
no

Grey knights can do some moderately serious psychic power shit but they're shitty over all. Just drop AP2 weapons on them and they die really easily.
>>
>>52813116
>almost everything is Fearless
Yeah, that's a problem when dealing with the most popular armies being space marines, or the other armies having ways of countering it. It's dumb.

Grey Knights have lots of cool gear and are all psychic, but you will always outnumber them due to how much l of their stuff costs. So if you're playing with objectives you can just ignore them.
>>
>>52813116
Very few armies really care about Fear/Leadership to a heavy degree. It's pretty much just Orks, Tau, Guard, and Eldar, and even that isn't a constant. Fear is something you should see as a nice extra bonus, but not something to go out of your way for.

Grey Knights have a lot of psykers and psychic powers to make use of. Santic in general is good at killing Daemons, but also buffing squads with extra strength or durability. Add onto that the fact that Grey Knights can bring a lot of Terminators and Dreadknights, and you've got an army with a small model count, but elite and durable units.

In practice, this doesn't always work out for them, since a single model dying is a big portion of their list, and they can only be in so many places at once.

Any critique on this admech list? Other than "use war convocation".

I was thinking I might take a knight warden instead of the kastelans and maybe drop a dragoon and some of the refractor fields to make up the difference. IWND on a knight sounds pretty sweet for grand convocation.

I haven't played since 6th but playing as daemons against GK was painful. Would not recommend them if you're mainly fighting GK, anyone else is fine though.

Oh your units all ID my models? Thats neat. Oh this squad rerolls all to wound and hit rolls against your entire army? Fun. Oh look special wargear that only works against my entire army and the occasional mage. Did you have to pay extra points for that? Oh it comes baked in. AV12 anti-daemon Flyers? Just vector strike it bro.

Not that GK are like an op faction by themselves, GW just thinks giving them tons of super special anti daemon abilities for free is fair. I guess they just assume that no one mains daemons or that because the army is only op against one faction that it's fair because you can just refuse to play against them.

Playing against daemons is like this fun adventure of discovery for the GK player, they just excitedly announce they just discovered some super special rule that only works against you turn after turn.
>>
>>52813628
Holy shit the tables have turned since you've played. I can barely dent my bud's Daemon list with all the new shit Daemons have gotten. I can barely make it to turn 3 before being tabled. Daemons beat GK at every phase.

Vestal is fucking trash. Every time I've tried it out, I wished I had ObSec instead because one turn of rerolling 1s is not worth that exchange.

>>
>>52814732

Double CAD sisters is not generally worth it, especially not for triple exorcist.

>>52814742

Honestly, it doesn't sound like you should be playing Sisters, who are an aggressive short ranged army. Heavy bolter rets are good, and I use them all the time. However, I don't base my strategy around them because almost everyone in the game has better shooting than a handful of heavy bolters. Likewise, Exorcists are great, but they are so unreliable that I've been debating cutting them, especially since Command Squads are good now.
>>
>>52814889
The HQ tax is only 25 points and the troop tax isn't that much of a tax.

The thing with SoB troops isn't that they're bad, it's that every other slot is better, so you're just hurting yourself with a double cad. I'd rather take a command squad than another troop because they're better in nearly every way.
