Welcome to the Accidental Magical Girl thread!

Various worlds and multiverses have become connected together via the mysterious Overcity, a sprawling landscape inhabited by monsters and magical beings. Girls and boys endowed with their new supernatural powers can work together solving conflicts that arise!

This thread houses three systems: First, QuasarBlack's CYOA PDFs which may be used as writing prompts. Second, AMGC which expands on the CYOA character creation and provides rules for combat. Finally, the SCS is an alternative to AMGC with a similar purpose. IRC uses mostly AMGC and Discord uses mostly SCS.

The CYOA's Patron Module, for choosing just who your mysterious benefactor is. Of course, not all of them have your best interests in mind...

...in fact, most of them probably don't care too much about you at all.

AMGC version 1.14. This is a derivative of the CYOA with combat rules based on Exalted. There's no easy conversion between the two, so keep that in mind.

Additional info, links, modules, and so on can be found on the IRC linkboard:
http://piratepad.net/MGCYOA

Or just drop into IRC for a quick Q&A.

The SCS was made as an addon to the CYOA to cover the combat side of roleplaying. It allows players to easily take characters made in the CYOA v1.5 and use them in Quests and long-running campaigns alike. Note that this system DOES require you to have a character made in the CYOA in the OP first.

This PDF covers the core rules of gameplay, as well as the methods of improvement and various spells and items magical girls use.

>Expansions to the SCS can be found in this link
http://pastebin.com/kVJmwcj3
These expansions include
>Order & Chaos; Friend & Foe (OC&FF): Details on the mechanical workings of Patrons, Dark Magical Girls, Monster Girls (both natural and corrupted), and also includes a bestiary
>Worlds & Wishes (W&W): Details various GM tools and a few player tools, including the function of Mundane weapons, Alternate/Optional Rules, Various tips and tricks for GMing and Roleplaying, as well as Augments for players looking for a little extra power after CharGen. It also includes the conversion process for AMGC characters into the SCS.

A CYOA is a story prompt, so let's use it as intended. Roll a random character in the CYOA and write a quick one-shot about them. I'll start.

Don't actually do this, it pointlessly clutters the thread. Instead, fill it with discussion!

What does your mahou fight for? Family? Friends? Truth, justice, and the American way?

I was wondering where the thread that introduced me to /tg/ went. Nice to see it back

>>
Okay how do you work this shit?
In what order are you supposed to run through the pdfs?
>>
>>52782634
There are two PnP systems: AMG Core and SCS
AMG Core uses the IRC at #MGCYOA https://www.rizon.net/chat
SCS uses the Discord Server at https://discord.gg/P9FWQ
If you want to try SCS, use the OP pdf first, then the Patrons pdf, and finally the 4th, SCS pdf
If you want to try AMGC, use the 3rd. blue pdf. It has everything you need.
You can start in one system and switch to the other later though, they're somewhat interchangable.
My advice to you is to try both places first and get a feel for them, then decide which community you like more.

>>

>>
>>52781489

>>
>>52782634
Ignore the PnP systems; unbalanced poorly-designed trash. Roll on the main PDF to start with. Do Corruption and Patrons optionally. Then throw it out and do something better with your life.

Good news: Corrupted magic will be represented in the spellbook when it finally comes out!
Bad news: the spellbook has been delayed a lot cause I was busy and now looking back on what I had managed to make before... eh I'm not really satisfied
Good news again: I've made a lot of progress on the new version, so it might be out in just over a week's time.
Bad news: if it's not out by then, which it very well might not be, then I won't be able to continue working on it much until the end of next term which will be like, another ten weeks.

Depends what you want to do. Want to just do the CYOA and maybe writefag a bit? Do the Pink pdfs. First >>52766482, then >>52766502.

If you want to hop on the IRC and roleplay, just do >>52766608, and refer back to the pink pdfs as sort of setting documents.

If you want to hop on the Discord and roleplay, use the Pink pdfs and then use >>52766623 to get stats for the build you create.

Grain of salt - I haven't been on either chat location in months. Or ever, in the case of Discord. But that's how it was a while back.

>>52782992
Patron is 'roll or choose patron' Once you've done that, you get a base package of 2 benefits and 2 drawbacks, and one freebie benefit. Your base package can be modified by swapping benefits or drawbacks from those on the alternate lists for your patron. If you want MORE benefits, you take more drawbacks. How many additional drawbacks you can take is determined by your patron.

>>52781489
Only if you go Beacon/Mint. Which... might not be WISE, but is possible.

In other news, I'm not dead, neither is my writefaggotry, and I'll eventually get round to making a more or less final pass on the CYOA once I actually get my editing software working again. Maybe I should actually jump into the IRC/Discord tonight just to show face.

What should be their priorities: combat, or support, or just a mixture? Which way do they lean? Also, what sets them apart from other specs, in terms of fighting style?

>Patron is 'roll or choose patron' Once you've done that, you get a base package of 2 benefits and 2 drawbacks, and one freebie benefit. Your base package can be modified by swapping benefits or drawbacks from those on the alternate lists for your patron. If you want MORE benefits, you take more drawbacks. How many additional drawbacks you can take is determined by your patron.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

Sound is a grab-bag. They'll have a mix of attack, debuff, and support magic. What they won't have is any good single target spells. Sound is largely about big area effects, but not terribly strong ones.

So an area buff, an area debuff, a couple area attacks. Probably some utility via echolocation or mimicry.

The IRC roleplays more than the Discord, as far as I'm aware. There's usually at least one channel full, and often three or four.
But don't take my word for it: come in and see for yourself

That's incorrect. Discord has almost twice or more the number of active members around than the IRC has on one of its good days. Our roleplay channel activity reflects this.

I used to do mechanics design professionally. I mostly dropped out because of a number of conflicts I had with the marketing and business sides of game development souring up the experience for me. Long story short, I don't get along with bean counters being able to tell game devs what to do without any talk-back. In hindsight, I was probably really immature about it, but I'm happy just applying myself as a trained hobbyist these days.

>Ranged + Skimpy
Naisu desu ne.
>>
>>52826245
Game development is just too strongly tied to business development. Have you considered going independent?
>>
>>52826351
I have. Decided I'd rather just make games for fun and on my own time, and study business law as an actual long-term career.

My mechanical chops have always been good, it's just that I can't really cope with people that have no business telling me what to do doing just that.
>>
>>52826380
I've tried doing game dev on the side (evenings and weekends) and it does not work out at all. You lose too much momentum from context shifting and you also sacrifice too much of your life to do it.

A strong game is necessary but not sufficient for good business. If you can make a good business as well, I'd highly recommend going indie so long as game dev is your passion.
>>
>>52826411
My eventual plan is to study up on business law and be able to competently run a studio that can understand its own hurdles in the market and legal arenas without sacrificing too much in development.

It's a pipe dream, but it's something.

So far, it hasn't been impossible. A lot of my best game development is inspiration-based, so gaps in development aren't enough to make me lose momentum. It means I'm shit at deadlines unless I push myself, but when you make your own deadlines that doesn't mean as much.
>>
>>52826455
Don't get intimdiated by the law side of it all. There is very little you need to know until you scale up your business, in which case you probably want more than just a very sparingly utilized consultant. The much more important part is being able to take your inspiration and bottle it into effective business tools. Your product has to both embody what makes your inspiration great and also serve as an efficient, useful building block for your business success.

Boilerplate contract generators are plentiful and LLC guides are everywhere, including what to do on taxes and how to manage IPs.

Definitely grab a buddy who is known for scheduling or making deadlines early.

>>52825320
This looks really good, but be careful about some of those big changes. You're halfway through to making a completely new system at this point, which while not necessarily a bad thing, might undermine your efforts later on if people decide not to switch to it.
>>
>>52827130
That's certainly a concern that I've kept in mind. It's hard to say where the right balance lies, especially since I've taken on the task of doing it alone. I think I've generally made good decisions though.

Are there any particular pieces that stand out to you? To me the standout change in this update was how Luck works, but I think it works a lot better thematically and I know it works better mechanically.
>>
>>52827130
>>52828276
I honestly do not have many concerns regarding the system for what it was, though perks can be a little odd to work with at first, the real trouble here is still, in my opinion, the spell lists. Again, still working on that. Only the Fire list has completed all play testing that I've put it through.

>>52829647
The most likely outcome of an individual effect isn't useful information if you're balancing within a greater context. You want to take into account the impact of every possible outcome on future outcomes, culminating in a win or loss. Doing such a thing in closed-form would be nigh-impossible and certainly an enormous waste of time compared to the alternative of simulation.
>>
>>52829747
Depends. I tend to use websites with automatic calculators that do the vast majority of the work for me. Even making a full statistical distribution isn't that hard as long as you're not trying to map like 10 sets of rolls or something.
Unless I'm trying to do something really complicated like 'see which spec beats which' which isn't something you can really do with a simulator anyway since people different people play their specs differently and what environment you're fighting in can have an enormous effect on the outcome of a fight depending on your spec.
>>
>>52829826
You certainly can do those sorts of complicated things. I've done it with my tech system and am now doing it with powers. You won't cover every possibility, but you'll do a lot better than guessing.

>>52766482
Let's see where this leads.
>>
>>52829914
How do you normally do it?
I wouldn't call what I do guessing: it's actually fairly easy to predict the results cause the specs in my spellbook are designed to excel at certain things, and just pitting two mahous against each other isn't really an accurate way to gauge how useful each spec is, especially since each has a whole list of spells that are a lot more complicated to deal with than a single power each.
>>
>>52829826
>>52829914
I actually don't do much testing unless I'm working on a mechanical overhaul. I do some stat testing with common spreads and the popular specs, but I usually just do some in-house testing and then release it. I keep an eye on it just in case I miss something big, and issue a patch if it's a problem. I do try to make sure big issues don't crop up, though.

Pic related.

What you're describing is an educated guess based on experience, but it can still be very wrong. I think I have pretty good instincts on what should work, but the data-based approach proves much better.

Admittedly, some spells are harder to balance than others. There's no correct answer to "how much of an advantage should water spec have near water", but there are limits of acceptability and many other questions do have clear answers. Part of the problem with AMGC is that it wasn't balanced from the ground up. The power of one build or spec vs another is practically random.

>>52830006
This is the standard that most people expect in RPGs, including or maybe especially professionally-made ones. Since I'm pursuing my ideal system and I'm pretty arrogant, I want to do better.
>>
>>52830219
That simulation does seem useful in certain situations but again, different specs might be useful in different situations. Lightning will do great in PvP scenarios because they only have to fight one target. Sound will be at a comparative disadvantage, as they're designed to fight multiple targets at once. I don't think it's possible to say which specs are better than which others, as long as each is equally good at fulfilling their own niche (and each niche is equally reasonably useful, or at least each spec has fair weaknesses to counterbalance having more frequently required niches).
>>

Oh. Developmental Phase. I was referring to post-development content. I don't break out the bar charts that often, but I do a lot more hardcore math during core development than I do now with the SCS.

Homework. Now.
>>
>>52830267
Right, but you might want to quantify how much better lightning is in one situation vs another. One potential complication is that burst damage is actually quite good in battles with multiple participants because lots of burst will remove opponents from the field. That's something I saw firsthand in one of my early versions of Ranged. They were balanced in duels but their burst was high, which made them overpowered in 2v2s.

Dice Roll!
>>
>>52830339
Joke's on you: I'm already studying! Got a textbook in front of me
>>52830343
Well, I plan to make spells a lot less capable of burst damage in general. In fact, all of my attack spells are single-target unless explicitly stated otherwise. That way they can be balanced so that spells that deal burst damage are adequately priced and given an adequate amount of strength for their spec

I could try to quantify these things, and running a calculation to find out how much damage you'll tend to deal could be useful, but eh... as long as you never really know how many enemies you're going to fight or how tough they'll be, how many dice they'll roll, etc, it's pretty futile to run complex simulations in my opinion.
>>
>>52830391
It's futile if the base of the game isn't balanced and nobody has any idea what to expect, which is the case with AMGC. That's a big part of why I'm balancing from the ground up. Once I have powers, perks, and patrons done I can make monsters and demonstrate their lethality in objective terms. Like a CR system, except that it actually works. Just because you want RPS effects to exist in the game doesn't mean that a concrete standard should be neglected.

Torque pls. Trust me, I REALLY don't want RPS effects to exist in the game. This isn't about RPS: different specs will always occupy different niches just because their powers are different. Illusion can never attack as well as Lightning, and Lightning will never be able to deceive or toy with their opponents as well as Illusion.
I don't know what you mean by a CR system, by the way.

Anyway, I think it sounds like this is starting to get heated, so I'm just gonna wish you good luck with your project and get back to studying, and maybe tinkering with my spellbook a little.

On a side note: Drakon, how long do you think it'll be until you release your spellbook? Also, how are you designing yours? Are you focusing your designs more on fluff or for maximising crunch fairness?
Just wondering, cause I'm hoping our spellbooks will be different enough that they don't end up clashing or competing or anything.
>>
>>52830526
Both the Ebon Mint and his unnamed “patron” have focused their energies into this child to make up for their losses, blasting him with power which would overwhelm far more mature beings. Yet perhaps his youth saved him, his genes and flesh still malleable enough to contain such changes, if only barely. He wears no clothing, shrouded only in veils of black energy and shimmering illusions. Stare too closely and madness will inevitably follow. Push the boy to the limit and he transforms into an amorphous hurricane of chaotic energy, lashing out with ever-changing “weapons” spawned from whim and nightmare.

The boy sleeps rarely, yet when he does his master calls to him from the blackness. He is a ghost in the machine, shrouded in darkness and warped afterimages wherever he goes. It is clear that his patron and the Ebon Mint are fully aware of each other, and they both try to get a leg up on one another in incomprehensible ways. Enemies one day, allies the next, the true relationship between the two is utterly impossible to unravel. A creature of shadows and trickery, his patron is almost playful compared to most of its type. It hates the powers of light and enjoys nothing more than bringing the plans of those who walk by day to ruin.

The beast loves to unravel and destroy, but seems to also desire humanity's protection as a whole. It frowns on artificial illumination, desiring only starlight at night. It especially despises atomic fire, and actively works to sabotage nuclear facilities and weapons. It is the constellations, and the stories mankind once told about them. It is the dim flickering of a torch held in primitive hands, casting dancing shadows on a cave wall and blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. It is the peace and the terror of midnight blackness, where the eye invents its own angels and demons.

Autism Satisfied, now I can relax. r8 and h8 or whatever yall do with these builds.

>I REALLY don't want RPS effects to exist in the game.
There's nothing wrong with inherent counters, soft or hard.

>I don't know what you mean by a CR system.
CR is a D&D term that stands for "Challenge Rating". It's supposed to be an indicator of the rough strength of a foe as compared to a party of 4 decent adventurers of that level. There's a lot of problems with it, though, namely that it ONLY takes into consideration the basic abilities of the monster, assumes that it's a party of 4, doesn't take into account acute minmaxing (which is rampant in D&D), and doesn't account for deviations in equipment (either up or down from average).

I think maybe you're reading RPS more literally than I am. When I say RPS, I mean that one is better than the other in one scenario, with the other being better in a different scenario. The two things are also balanced in the importance/frequency of the scenarios. A good game (in my opinion) has that nash equilibrium of decisions that you find in RPS.

By CR system I mean like what D&D and Pathfinder use to rate how challenging encounters are for players. It gives a ballpark estimate, but is very breakable. It's a lot better than nothing, though.

Oh, it wasn't my intent to make you angry or sound like I am. I'm just explaining the point behind me making a simulator to improve the system.

Well, in that case, yeah I favour a reasonable amount of RPS. Honestly I think it's inevitable when we're dealing with specs
>>
>>52830762
I don't mind at all. I think I've done that fairly well so far, if you look at the first PDF I posted. You can give me your opinion on whether or not the different builds feel different enough.

My approach has generally been to assign roles to different stats and techniques and then run them through simulated combat. I continue to iterate until I'm satisfied. For example, I have strength melee builds as being strong but less flexible due to their lower technique count (compared to coordination-based builds). Mystic is more flexible still. Melee has an advantage at close range. Melee with a splash of the coordination attribute is better able to adapt, but not quite as pure-strength in the latter's specialty area.

I try to make sure everything has its place, although with a sufficiently complex game it's hard to say that no choice is strictly dominated by another. There's also the fact that my mechanical balance is a means to an end, where that end is play enjoyment. I want to be able to play a character that I imagine and have it be in the same ballpark as other players. It doesn't have to be exact, but it has to be close. I think that's something I can do with my design.

I'd say she has a fair amount of Luck, just by being the virtue of a Disney princess, no?
>>
>>52843822
But she's not. She's the queen, Anna is the princess.

I mean, if you wanted to you could swap Sorcery for Fated, but I don't think she's got particularly high Luck, considering she manages to accidentally spear her sister in the heart.

What if my kid doesn't want to stop throwing a tantrum because I won't buy them a stupid toy they don't need? I ignore their (attempting to be) spoiled ass, pull them along to continue my shopping, and do the responsible thing with the better outcome in the long run.

I purify her anyway.

I am focusing more on raw mechanics and balancing out the lists. Specifically putting a cap on the amount of spells in each list. In the most recent version that I know of, some lists had as few as 19 spells, others in excess of 40. That is a big damn variance. Whats more, many spells are simply repeats or straight rehashes of others ones within these lists.

I'm focusing on given each magic their own flavor and applications, as seen in my original pitch which I'll post below. I don't care for minmaxing but all is fair in love and war. I just want an even playing field for all mahou shoujo. Currently magic is not balanced against melee or range builds.

Fire - Offense, AoE and DoT heavy; Detonate, Afterburn, Extra damage, Combust

Water - Offense, AoE, Utility; Frost/Slippery, "bubbles", extra soak penetration, Freeze/Fog

Air - Fast, AoE, Buff; Physical modifers, wide area effect, flight, "clouds"

Stone - Heavy Offense/Defense, Environmental Manipulation; Build/Destroy, Sand

Lightning - Fast, Utility, Strong Offense; Self buff, "stun"

Metal - Strong Offense/Defense, Utility; Construct/Build, add temp soak, repair

Time - Extreme DoT, Fast, Slow, Self-Buffing

Gravity - Environmental Control, AoE, Utility

Plant - Environmental Alteration, Buff/Debuff, DoT heavy; Indirect, allergy/poison, brambles

Beast - Buff, Utility, DoT; Morph, Flock/Swarm, Stampede/Rampage

Illusion - Debuff, AoE, Environmental Control; Deception, Imaginary Objects, Acting

Sound - Utility, Fast, Strong Offense; Deafen, LRAD/USW

Psychic - Fast, Heavy Debuff, Utility; Misdirection, Influence

Empathy - Heavy Buff/Debuff/Utility; Tempt/Provoke, Command, Sense

Spirit - Heavy Utility/Debuff/DoT; Totems/Undead, Poison/Disease, Bad Juju

Darkness - Heavy Offense/Debuff/DoT; Wrath, Stalk, Shadow Walk

Light - Heavy Offense/Buff, Fast; Flash, Illuminate, Order

Reinforcement - Heavy Defense/Buff/Utility; Heal, Empower, "Cleanse"

As for when I finish, at the rate I have been, I'm inclined to either give up or request assistance in completing. It'd be far easier to collaborate efforts and build something as a community. I'm a great think tank and analyst, even an awesome systems builder, but if I don't have the time to commit, I'm useless.
>>
>>52850874
The idea is to implement new mechanics to magic and even a scaling system to enhance and encourage more magic usage. This way current builds are ultimately going to see a general buff and new builds will actually have a leg to stand on in a pinch.
