Where do you live? How is it?
A jungle of towers, hundreds of floors high and miles wide?
A slum where the biggest "house" is the one with 4 floors?
A city with a skyscraper center, surrounded by Plattenbau buildings?
Something else?

Working on a setting with Cyberpunk ideas in an Ancient Egypt setting on a parallel thread:>>52736110

And now I want to test the setting. So dear /srg/ could you suggest a system and a one shot for said system that could be easily reskinned?

Shadowrun's too deeply embedded in its own setting to be of much use; Blades in the Dark is a pretty adaptable set of mechanics, I'd try that. There's a Shadowrun hack of it that you could lift some ideas from as well.

Last character I played was a technomancer street kid who lived in the top of a broadcast tower. Concept was essentially Quasimodo up in a bell-tower.

If you want to run a heist game with broad character archetypes, it's great. Unless this guy wants to play Imhotep's Eleven, it's not a good choice.

I didn't say that, but anon gave no indication it that thread what kind of game he wants (the biggest mistake a wannabe game designer can make) and BitD does one very specific thing. It's a terrible suggestion for a generic system to use for the setting, unless he wants to build the whole game around heists.
>>
>>52751624
Normal, my normal group is on hiatus for reasons and I don't know anyone else aside from myself and a couple of people on here that runs EotM in 5e.
>>52751559
Technomancy was more of a way to get at some gimmicks for the character without relying on wizard bullshit; it wasn't bad, but it helped a lot that the GM was on board with the concept and I wasn't expecting to get long-term viability out of the character. If it was a long-term character I'd probably have gone the more traditional route and disliked it intensely, but hey, maybe the technomancer book will come out and be good.
>>52751908
Honestly if the guy's taking cyberpunk's high tech/low life aesthetic, stapling it into another setting and then using that setting for standard D&D adventures or somesuch, he deserves whatever he gets. That said, provided you're prepared to work within the framework of completing a 'job', you can do almost anything. Hell, I've seen it used to run a pre-historic one-shot where the players hunted down a mammoth.
>>
>>52752211
A one-shot of BitD is missing half the game, famdesempai. Stress and Trauma become hitpoints by a different name, you don't deal with Factions and all the Crew stuff, Heat, Entanglements and Vices are gone, etc.

The game is not about a heist, singular. It's about heists, plural; about how you and your crew get pulled deeper and deeper into the life, pushed against harder and harder targets, and get more and more scarred, and how every score is never quite the last score because you're too fucked up to quit. There's a reason it works for magitech crimes and Shadowrun, but not for D&D.

Any tips for making a decker?
>>
>>52753127
If you want max security get both Quick Config and Perfect Time. That lets you, in the absolute worst case, make a huge switch of programs and attributes.

In better situations, save at least one free action for after your turn so that you can go for more defense if you do get spotted.

Overclocker's nice, almost as good as an extra program slot, so it's another one to have if you have the room.

Also, make sure to run Smoke-and-Mirrors at the highest you can without taking any noise penalties.

Remember that you ideally want to get a direct connection to something slaved to a host in order to break in more easily.
>>
>>52750528
My character lives near the mid-top of an apartment complex, with high digs and enough freedom to dive off their balcony when shit goes bad.

They actually have no windows or lookout points so snipers can't see in, and their doors are 8 inch thick steel. Gotta open them via keypad and it takes about 10 seconds to actually open, like a vault. Each room is on it's own air loop to prevent gas attacks and a single button opens the escape hatch; which is really some tamped charges that open a hole out the side of the apartment that everyone can jump out of.

No parachutes though.
>>
>>52751116

Could you make a Decker/Getaway driver with high Logic, decent Reaction and Wired Reflexes? Do half of the hacking in AR that way.
>>
>>52754270
ehh, maybe
Remember that getaway driver is like a tertiary archetype and more suited for the Street sammies/Adepts
As a decker having high REA is useless
and unless you cheese it HARD you won't be good enough with AR decking to do your job

My street sam. A rented garage (low lifestyle) just outside Lambeth, London. He sleeps next to his bike and wakes up every morning smelling of moror oil. On the plus side no one bats an eye when he moves around equipment or returns home carrying duffle bags.

Now that I have enough proxies setup, I can ask how likely it is that I would be shot if my crew finds out I used to work corporate security before I was a shadowrunner.
And more accurately, If that sort of thing is That Guy or a viable background for a shadowrunner
>>
>>52758785
>that I would be shot if my crew finds out I used to work corporate security before I was a shadowrunner.
shot? Chummer, that shit's worth orichalcum!
Saying that you have experience with that can really save an infiltrators day, when he needs to know what kind of security is usually there and how to avoid it
And having contacts with e.g. the quartermaster can get your team out of the boiling waters

It's perfectly fine as a background, and unless your other runners are totally "everyone working for The Man is evil and needs to die" (in which case they are hypocrites) they shouldn't find it too offensive.
Just give him Knowledge(Security Tactics), Knowledge(Security Design) and/or some contacts in a corp and your other players should appreciate it
unless of course you still work for them
>>
>>52758785
From my experience it really depends on the GM. One I know will insist that the assumption is that the default for all characters is that without the SINner quality they were born SINless, so you must have that quality to pull that character off for him, while another I know would tell the player to tell him how and why they burned their SIN and generally rolls with it with some advice as to what other negative qualities to take.

>>52758785
Far as I know, ex corpsec/military is a pretty common background for Street Samurai. So long as you've taken some steps to distance yourself from former employers (burning your SIN, for one) they'd probably welcome someone who knows about corporate security from the inside and wouldn't hold much of a grudge. Maybe if you did corpsec for SK or Aztechnology you might get some flak, but that's a big if.

>tfw your commission gets finished just in time for a Shadowrun thread
>>
I'm trying to figure out what stops most SINless from going out and getting a SIN.

>shadowrunners and other criminal elements just prefer going without
>ditto for the conspiracy-minded
>corp SINs are packaged with janitor duty, and there's a hundred other guys after the post as well
>national SINs need you to go through serious bureaucratic hoops, and generally try to stop you at every turn unless you do something for them (like join the army)

Is that about correct?
>>
>>52759335
How easy getting a SIN is determined by where you are, but generally yes
either you don't want a SIN (because you want to be free)
or you can't get a SIN because the corps/govs don't want to grant people citizen rights (same reason as why companies get moonlighters, less pay for same work)

>>52755784
The thing about these questions is that a complete system overhaul only works in systems you (or the GM) know well. If you don't know GURPS or Fate or Savage Worlds or PbtA and someone tells you to run your game in that, it isn't helpful unless you have familiarity with the chosen system. Either that, or someone makes a set of houserules for everything. At best, you get EotM. At worst, you get Anarchy.

Speaking of which, has anyone even attempted to unfuck SA?

Would something like an MP7 or Mini-Uzi sized gun be a machine pistol or SMG?
>>
>>52759987
I'd say an MP7 would be a SMG, and a Mini Uzi would be a Machine Pistol.
>>
>>52759987
>machine pistol or smg?
yes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch_MP7

>pdw
>submachine gun
>machine pistol
those are literally the categories the mp7 fall in.

I would say its a sub machinegun
>>
>>52760012
mini uzi is sub machinegun
micro uzi is machine pistol

an Uzi is on par with an m16 on terms of weight and cyclic rate

Mini uzi is on par with an m4 on terms of weight and range

micro uzi stands alone as a result of there being no AR machine pistol of actual functional size
this shit is complicated yo
>>
>>52760020
Honestly, what's the difference between a subgun and a PDW besides nomenclature and how they're used?
>>
5e question. What the best drone/weapon pair to use if I just want to have it use suppressive fire? Also is there any in-combat use for non-jumped-in drones other than suppressive fire? Unless you spend a fortune on pilot and targeting software their dice pool is pathetic.
>>
>>52760136
PDWs were created to be an armor-defeating option that has the same usability as an SMG. So they generally have rounds like 5.7 that work better against personal body armor than most pistol rounds.
>>
>>52759987

PDWs are generally classified such because they are designed around non-standard ammunition that is often lightweight but high velocity. MP7 fires a weird ass 4.6mm, the P90 fires 5.7mm.

The difference between an SMG and a Machine Pistol is generally harder to define, but if it was a carbine built to fire pistol cartridges, it's generally an SMG, and if it used to be or is based on a semi-automatic pistol but can fire automatic / burst, it's a Machine Pistol.

>magazine and caliber

like, a mac10 falls into both machine pistol and sub machinegun with its rate of fire and .45 cal

while the p90 is submachinegun/PDW because 50 round mag and its 5.7mm

basically a PDW is a mix between carbine and sub machinegun

machine pistol is a fully automatic pistol and normally concealable

a pp2000 can be a PDW by basically having armor piercing rounds even though its the size of a machine pistol, but it's designed for use by both hands.

>>52760160
this

>>52760184
definition of what is a sub machinegun is also weird as shit, but sub machine gun and machine pistol... I think it has to do with one hand vs two hand design intent. Throw a stock on a micro uzi with a black tallon rounds and you've got a PDW

this talk is tedious

>>52760767
in general I avoid treating the round as the sole arbiter of damage for real-world comparisons because there's some jank situations that arise when you do that. also a mosin-nagant can be pretty fine, they're just highly variable and don't really have the chops of more well-regarded rifles in their class. Where's yours from?

Governments pay corporations to employ their National SINner workers. There's a very slim margin for employing someone who doesn't come with a stack of nuyen for the corporation, and usually it involves burning that employee's SIN before paying them.

I mean I know why it is, it's because the concealment checks are really easy to cheese out with no character investment so the heavy pistol gives a larger number for no downside. 5e missed a big opportunity-- Should have made limits the primary concealment mechanic instead of check penalties and bonuses.

I tend to have 4 or 5 light fire 70s on a character sheet with no licenses, as burners if the character is a hard bastard who'd expect to find use for them. Merc-types like heavy pistols, detectives use revolvers because idk my detective characters always have this weird motif about chance so I use reliability as a callback to that while also alluding to russian roulette, and then more sociable characters tend to use the executive action or the colt america, depending on their background.

I'm a little bit meticulous.

i wouldn't say that's meticulous at all.

>Mercs want the most tactical thingy
>Detectives want reliability as they don't use their weapon that often
>Faces are suppose to have flashy/socially acceptable fire arms

i suffer from the tendency to police dead people's guns and then use those for illegal shit later on. That shit builds up quickly over time

I also like custom look on guns. Guardian is engraved with filigree
>>
>>52761346
Using dead folks' guns as burners just seems to create a trail, to me. Places you at multiple crime scenes, and all that. Buying 200 dollar dumpster guns is traceable but I figure if i'm not making a purchase that anybody would consider noteworthy, it's probably not enough to really trace even if they identify the weapon. Not that my characters are all likely to go that route, but.
>>
>>52761412
I like the idea of just using the same gun the entire time over the time span from 2070 to 2077 and eventually a detective goes insane trying to track my guy.

So it's a genemod that causes the body to produce proteins that reduce cyberware rejection, represented by a reduction in essence cost.
I'd say they lose the gene, they stop making the proteins, they suffer normal rejection rates and lose that 10% reduction retroactively as their body is fullly exposed to their cyberware for the first time. Potentially causing their essence to dip below 0 if they had enough cyber implanted.
Sucks though, I usually try to rule in the players' favor.
The more curious question to me is how did they lose the genemod?
Was it overwritten with something else?

Or you could stop waiting for the shoddily made work of a fraud company that only hires a few half-paid freelancers to butcher someone else's intellectual property, and play the complete, fully edited, better-balanced, more fleshed-out edition of the game released by the people who actually had the original idea and vision for Shadowrun.
You could wait another year to have your magical Matrix setting-mangling shenanigan adventures in a Tumblr-using art major's vaporwave wet dream with special snowflakes on every corner and nothing about the setting itself, watching mysads, pixies and technomancers run roughshod over the last remnants of what was once a cyberpunk setting but is now a Women's Studies major's clumsy satire of the modern world with barely any setting detail except for the Awakened.
Or you could play a complete, balanced and errataed game in an actual cyberpunk universe where magic plays a narrative role without taking over the whole setting, which is by the way multiple hundreds of pages deep and comes with maps, in-depth guides and references for everything you'll ever need. And you can do it while playing a character archetype you'd see in a cyberpunk work and that can interact constructively with the setting, instead of a min-maxed special snowflake magician made up in someone else's intellectual property by a thieving fraudster who's just trying to wring the largest possible sum out of Tumblrinas with a hard-on for fairies so he can pay for his next bathroom renovation.

I'm just waiting for the day where one of you power-fantasy-hungering CGL drones come up with a better reply than that.
I have yet to hear why you prefer playing a shoddy, unfinished, half-edited, unbalanced mess of a game that steps all over the original work and feeds money straight into the pockets of a proven fraudster, when you could be picking up the fully finished original game for completely free right there in the Mediafire folder.
The differences that aren't explicitly a mechanical fault or lack are that mages are powerful and metaplot-involved to the point that there's nothing to be gained from playing a non-Awakened without a gimmick build, there are multiple special-snowflake metavariants with almost no fluff that don't mesh with the setting, the devs have singled out everything even remotely cyberpunk to tear it apart with gamist methods, and of course even the Matrix is being enveloped by a metaplot that will inevitably break one of the setting's core rules by melding it with magic.
In all honesty, go play WGA. There's no reason why you wouldn't enjoy it - you're a perfect magician with a carte blanche to do everything you ever want towards the evil normies, and no one can ever do anything against you.

As for why i prefer 5th edition, well i like the basic system and i like how they handle decking. 3rd edition is errata as fuck (in the good sense) but decking is still clunky.

Not going to defend CGL, they are utter shit heads and the devs of shadowrun deserve way more than they get shit on by their company but i prefer to fix whats wrong with 5th edition than re learning 3rd and then fixing whats wrong with 3rd.

Not saying you are wrong either, all your complains are valid except maybe the one about metavariants as i heard they were also in 3rd (maybe i am wrong) and i take many ideas from 3rd for houseruling 5th.

Summoning is the super-strong thing. There's also a few OP spells that if you cheese the right way become even more OP, and some that if you cheese, they become OP.

Others need a little more work, like say some kind of pain killing 'ware, but in generally the summoning is the real nasty bit.

Lets see what need fixing with 5th ed
-Editing so relevant information will be where needed/expected and not halfway across the book
-Rules being adjust as to be written by person so parts match up. Like default run rewards making you play for an year just to get some cyberware. Or small unit tactics using different team work test rules than the core book
- The progression of Awakened characters to be put on equal level as Cyber guys. And not initiate to godhood
-Matrix activity not taking half an hour to do X

A x% cost/essence reduction and some amount of reduced Availability for 'ware if you're mundane would seem like the simplest fix without bloating the rulebook much. -10%, -4 Avail maybe? Doesn't really fix the core problem of what the hell a mundane character does with all their karma to give them an equivalence to initiation though. Maybe some kind of acclimatisation process that allows you to increase the effective grade of a given piece of 'ware by spending karma? 15*New Grade or something?
>>
>>52776666
first of all: Nice Adversary quints
second: Maybe have them be able to convert Karma to nuyen? Mages need mostly karma, while mundanes need mostly nuyen.
Or alternatively: getting "additional essence" where their soul grows onto that ware and increases how much they can take, meaning that at the end you either get better ware or more essence for it (or both). I get the feeling that it might be OP, though I don't know why

It might be a little extreme, what i do is removing inmunity to normal weapons for spirit summoned with a force less or equal than your magic and those summoned with a force higher than your magic loss the auto successes on their soak roll.

If you wanna go even further just ban immunity from normal weapons.

>>52777310
depends on the version
As I said upthread the 4e version is hard enough that it can reduce their power significantly (for those that don't know: in 4e background counts reduced your MAG by their absolute and went from -12 to 12)
With the cleansing metamagic you can reduce the rating, and domains IIRC give you bonus dice

With the 5e version? yeah, BCs of 2 should be somewhat common and should increase the bigger the emotional impact

In any case you should make it so that adepts are only affected by half of the rating, since they are damaged more in their abilities. Just fluff it as them being less dependent on ambient mana
>>
>>52777310
>That's not a bad idea. What are your thoughts on background count?

I never got background count, it seems too fickle of a mechanic. Shadowrunner shoot up a place, does that issue a background count? And what magic should it favored? I get healing magic will be affected but mind control? Fireball? Barrier?
>>
>>52777403
Yeah I was just thinking of having bc either not affect adepts or affect them by half. Since like you said it's crippling for them. Plus I don't think it isn't too far off the logical thought process anyways since most of their magic is passive it would follow that they don't need as much access to the mana flows.
>>
>>52777457
My plan is to go with me of a straightforward approach. Big fire happened here not too long ago, good for fire mages, bad for everyone else. Granted most situations won't be as clear cut, but I think my players will understand it's all in the interest of balance and will give a bit of leeway.

So how do you favor a tradition with emotions? Like i have a nordic mage and a hermetic one which emotions are their traditions?
>>
>>52777789
the ones given in SM are mostly sites of important history for the relevant tradition (e.g. a large magical library for hermetics)
I guess that by acting on things in a matter fitting the tradition you can aspect the BC to you:
Violent actions and other means of creating lots of emotions only create a background count that is initially neutral (ie. not favoring anyone). These neutral BCs can then be aspected to favor your tradition
BCs created by your tradition are already aspected to you
Though this is not RAW, just personal view on the mechanic

>>
>>52778550
The simplest way is to take the Way of the Warrior and initiate ASAP. Take Domain of the Warrior as your first metamagic. (If you're paranoid or the GM's an ass about being magically tracked prepare a hiding place with a high BC and/or a good mana barrier until you can get Masking too).

Most BCs are going to be violence aspected, so that lowers it by your grade +1.

>>52774837
The list of things that I always wanted to tweak about 5e was, well, not as long as it was for 4e but it wasn't super short either. Off the top of my head:
>curb numbers bloat
>do something to make cyberlimbs less janky
>experiment with ways to require technomancers spread their resources less thinly at chargen
>toxins and explosives are nearly unfixable
>keep most of the matrix rules but rewrite the fluff

>>52774916
Cyber and magic are about as evenly matched as they've ever been. There are specific bits of jank with each that need to be looked at, though. I'm also assuming that we'd be looking at balance as core-book specifically, and the rest would be considered optional rules. Since basically no game is balanced across a dozen splats.

I'm not sure how I'd reduce the base costs, but I know I'd do something like "Mages can only take Betaware or beta bioware/cyberware"
>>
>>52778507
Honestly, I like running both sorts of games, so I tend to be ok with CGL's approach in this instance. But more specifically, the rules are very spotty regarding nuyen as a reward and the progression system just doesn't work the same way if you change things up that way. And it's bullshit that you have stronger magic-users in low-nuyen campaigns and stronger cyborgs in high-nuyen campaigns, it should be able to be a GM-dependent lore concern and not a balance concern. The only way I can imagine that'd fix this is implementing Karma costs for cyberware implantations and rebalancing the nuyen costs to compensate, but I imagine that'd be a very polarizing decision.

I played this as my first Shadowrun character. He was an aspected Sorcerer Security Mage with two Cyberarms. He had his arms blown off in an altercation with Shadowrunners. Ended up falling into the Shadows and loved the freedom it brought. Mechanically speaking, being able to roll 19 Dice for shooting an Assault Rifle while also being able to throw up Physical Barriers and Spell Defense dice is not a bad thing.

Shadowrun is a system that doesn't take a lot of push to make a character concept viable.
>>
>>52780455
Really most of the stuff that anybody used was ported over every edition. I suppose 4e had a bunch of books that just had nothing but mostly-useless gear in them that I used to use for one or two items and forget the rest existed. Hrm. Feed me opinions on whether an adept can take the Spirit Bane quality.

SPIRIT BANE
BONUS: 7 KARMA
A character with a Spirit Bane really torques off a certain type of spirit (p. 303). Whether the character has a reputation for harming this sort of spirit or something about her aura enrages them, spirits of the type affected by the Spirit Bane are likely to harass the character when she is in their presence, and they may be reluctant to obey or perform favors for the character or her friends.
If spirits of this type are ordered to attack a party that includes the character, these spirits will single her out and attempt to destroy her first. Affected spirits will always use lethal force against these characters with the Spirit Bane quality.
If the character with Spirit Bane tries to summon or bind this spirit, she suffers a –2 dice pool modifier for the attempt. If the summoner tries to banish a spirit of this type, the spirit receives a +2 dice pool modifier for resisting her attempt. Watchers and minions do not count for Spirit Bane, as they are constructs that are not summoned like normal spirits.
>This quality may only be taken by magic users. Magic users may possess this quality for a type of spirit that is not a part of their magical tradition.

Magic users is not the usual terminology for Awakened, so it seems a bit more intentional that it's only people that can summon things that can get it, especially given the penalties.

(And that will be a bigger inconvenient during play than -2 dice on a ginormous pool.)

It wouldn't do as much if an adept took it. I'd maybe consider modifying the cost. The rest basically depends on the situation.
