I'd say maybe give their faces a light dab/wash to push their definitions a bit further, but as it stands they still are quite solid, you can easily leave as is.

Trying my hand at another seeker missile design. I honestly don't like the look of fins on a missile, it seems like it's rudimentary technology the Tau should be above by now. So how about two thrusters instead?

> i like that design, it looks kinda cool, but i think three trusters would look even better.
I would also make the missile less conical and more round, like the plasma rifles, just with fins at the end
>>
>>52750770
Hm, you mean another thruster on the bottom? the flat area is where the magnet will go to attach to the bottom of the drone's wing.
>>
>>52750808
yeah, thats pretty much what i meant

Afternoon lads.

I've been priming this morning and my AP white spray is leaving a shitty residue on things no matter how I do it. What's the best white primer? (Actual hobby one, I can't seem to find a rustoleum one in the UK)

My GW Chaos black spray works like a charm.
>>
>>52750967
Tamiya Fine White should be a good one.
The biggest downside is cost, as it costs a fair bit for a considerably smaller can (only 180 ml rather than 400).
Vallejo spray primers have generally treated me well too, but I've only used the grey one there.
>>
>>52750874
Hm, just tried it. It's impossible to take a photo as I can't glue them and the pieces are too small for blutac to work properly, shit kept falling off. The third thruster on the bottom made it look a bit messed up, imbalanced. I think I'll stick with the javelin-y look of two, honestly.
>>
>>52751157
its your missile, do what you want with it, but dont forget to post the results once you finished
>>
>>52751208
Aye aye! I'm glad I'm going to paint these black. I can't fucking shape them perfectly, so there will be carving bumps.
>>
>>52750273

I see some people suggest priming models with only grey instead of white or black. What is the reason for that?

To the anon asking for a recipe:

Black primer, gun metal base coat, nuln oil all over, hard drybrush of gun metal, then a lighter drybrush of 50/50 gun metal and silver. Finally another drybrush of pure silver on the top areas.
Wash on the recesess with smokey ink.
The gold is retributor gold with sepia wash and that citadel brass color as highlight(cant remember the name)
And the stripes are golden yellow with a sepia wash.
>>
>>52751349
personal preference.
Personally I don't like doing that on plastic models cause it's hard to tell where the paint is and where not.
Aside from that the only other factor that should enter that decision is your painting scheme.
For example, if you do yellow, prime white, if you do dark blue, prime black, if you paint something in a medium brown prime whatever.
>>
>>52751349
It's hard to build up light colors over black, and dark colors over white. Grey acts as a decent middle ground, making it ideal for priming in more cases than white or black.

This guy's concept art has inspired a lot of the style I try to go for with my Marines. That said, I'm stuck now. Specifically, the servitors here.

Is there anything similarly posed- GW or not- I could use as a base model for something like this? I have some plans already for standing versions, but I don't think I've ever actually seen a mini in this pose.

>making it ideal for priming in more cases than white or black.
Sorry if that seems nitpicky, but 'statistics' on what might or might not be a common scenario are kind of a moot point.
You are painting one specific scheme at a time and it's not like you cannot have more than one primer around.

Just get the primer that's best suited for the scheme you are doing.

I'm looking at picking up a small Necron force and I'm looking round for interesting colours to paint them that aren't just the standard metal drybrush.

You can do it, just stick to an army you really like and don't spend too much time on the core/base units.

I don't let myself buy new things unless I have most of my other stuff painted.
I save money because it completely stops impulse buys, and it forces me to get things done. I wanted a new Lord of Change, skyfires, and some other stuff but I said id wait until I finished painting my other last unit of hellstriders before I bought them. By the time I finished painting them I don't really want the new stuff anymore. Saved myself $250-300 easy.

Did over 100 models... My current army is:
20 mauraders
30 warriors
10 knights
10 hellstriders
30 daemonettes
20 chosen (blood reaver conversions because I hate finecast)
3 daemon princes
1 KoS
1 LoC
1 manticore
1 war shrine
5 spawn
1 warp lightning cannon
1 plague claw
10ish heros, sorcerers, etc.

I made a pdf of the oldcron hobby section from their first non-WD codex.
Would post if I was on my other pc, but maybe another anon can help you out.

Anyway the old Necrons had a bunch of paintscheme suggestions that assumed they were made of ceramics.
The first Dawn of War also had some more colorful schemes for them.

If you want to stick with metals, but want more colors you could look into clear coats from tamiya and the like.
I think that's called candy coating or something like that? Basically gives you a finish like a metallic paintjob on a car.

You guys know its [current year] right?
If you take the money you would spend BUYING a new army, you can spend it instead on a commission painter and get all your other shit painted.
There are so many commission studios out there now, its ok to do it. They are all in business somehow. A lot of people only have time to play and cant spend time painting so it makes sense to have someone else do it for you.

Thanks again to the anon that recommended Super Clean. I've still gotta go back over some bits but happy for the most part. Worked wonders on metal. Shame I used black primer all those years ago, since I read it's a bitch to get off. Now to build and kitbash and the fun stuff.
>>
>>52751579
Try using Crypt Ghouls from GW, they have a similar hunched-over build that can be changed with some cutting and light greenstuff. They're also in about the same size-range as most Skitarii/mechanicum units, so that will probably help the kitbashing somewhat.

Hi /wip/.

How do I do a good pale with a hint of blue flesh tone?

I want to do something withthe skin of a human an ice sorceress - still definitely human, but definitely ice magic-y.

I'm worried that just blending in a bit of blue to the last few highlights will look at best shit, and at worst a horrible brown smudge.

I was thinking do pale skin, white-ish highlights and then the final highlights a very pale blue, but that might all look to blue.

I don't really know what to do with it.

Pic related is the model - limited edition Rasputina from Malifaux.

>Are 40k and WHF supposed to take place in the same universe, just on opposite ends of the timeline?

Once upon a time, before the Dark Age of Technology, GW officially stated that WHFB took place on one of the many planets that made up the WH40K universe, but since then, that statement has been abandoned.
>>
>>52752491
The Warhammer world exists in the 40k universe. They share the Old Ones, the Chaos gods, the Warp/Real of Chaos, Orks, etc.

There was also a time when Chaos champions could receive things like plasma pistols and chainswords in WHF.
>>
>>52752463
Shade with purple and go for paler flesh tones that go towards the greyer desaturated spectrum.
If you use actual blue she might end up looking a bit smurfy.
Maybe look into how people do demonette skin for GW slaanesh demons.
Sounds like a problem somebody might have solved for you already there.

But painting and converting are the two parts of the hobby I really enjoy. I've only played about 5 games of anything in the last 6 or 7 years. I've finished up a bunch of warbands for stuff like Inq28, Empire of the Dead, Necromunda and so on, but never a full army for any system.

I currently have a full WHFB Skaven army, an AoS Tzeentch Arcanites army, a large footslogging IG army, a 30K Mechanicum army and an absolute ton of other stuff either built, primed or partially painted but never finished. It's so morale destroying that they're all hidden away in boxes or cupboards.

Have any of you ever assisted to a golden daemon contest, even if just to watch? I would like to know how many prices are given in that contest. Is it just 1 bronze, 1 silver and 1 gold for each category + the sword? I ask this because I have been at other painting contests where the prizes were like 1 best of category, 3 golds, 6 silvers and 9 bronzes. If there are that many I can actually have a chance to win at least a bronze and that would justify travelling to UK and investing the next month painting for the upcoming games day.

Barrel extensions are way overkill.
Either drop the extension entirely or place the extended part under the wingd
>>
>>52755105
Managed to finally place pins and plasticard grips on the bottom to hold the guns and missiles together. I've had to reglue a few things because of accidents and me being really mad so I'm doing a lot more mistakes. Now I just have to find a way to pin the wings to the bottom of the drone top, which will be difficult as there's not much space at all.

>>52756423
How are they overkill? the official gun is 5.7cm long exactly, mine are 5.6cm. Moving it is impossible now, there's too much shit glued.
>>
>>52756483
The original gun extends behind the wing,
your has like 9/10th sticking out from the font of it.

That makes it look an d heave inherently unstable, s'why the guns flail around so much.

It's your shit but as is. it looks more like they're supposed to be arms than guns.

You have the benefit of playing orks, so it'll always look propa. Tau can't afford that kind of stuff. But I share your frustrations as well. I do dryfit a bit but it always comes out shit or uneven. Why can't I eyeball straight lines? Everything I always cut is at an angle or crooked.

That's a misconception, propa orky is a razors edge between dull and busy.

From my perspective Tau have it easy, they can get away with large plat surfaces as long as they have some grooves and a sphere to break it up, no need to maker a billion rives, layered plates, glyphs, chips and score marks.

Got more done today, feel like I am almost done the main model, just need to finish a few skulls and paint all the blood gems and vials.

May need to redo the face, was trying to give him eyes like Kaecilicus from the Doctor Stranger movie. Though Ironbreaker heavily watered down with Nulin Oil would do this but it came out really crummy. Thoughts on how to improve this? Or should I just go with glowy blue eyes? Also first time doing a Plasma gun, Heat Effect came out better than I thought.

Working on his backpack right now then will finish up the hand and hilt of his sword, still have no clue what I am going to do with that sword itself though.

Critiques are needed.

I am kinda the opposite. Doing chain work is incredibly relaxing for me. Just toss on some music or podcast. Get another batch of 20 clanrats and go paint all their weapons. Then their flesh and so on... Kinda like meditating for me.

I honestly don't need more Skaven, but I sill keep buying boxes just to batch paint them. The tally is 220 Clanrats, 80 Storm Vemrmin and 120 Plague Monks, all painted and based, along with over 300 gigant rats comming from the Monk sprues.

It does read more like rust than osl.
Mainly because light doesn't work like that.
But you could kind of salvage the effect if you push the source, i.e. the slits and make them a bright orange/yellow. Would give you the look of a glowing coal oven.
Still not super accurate, but would sell the effect better imo.

Not much lore released on her yet (though I think there's going to be a big dump of it when the new physical rulebook releases this week), but her character art makes it look like she's an albino.

I'm looking to make a custom Nurgle Planaquin/Litter. What would be some good beasties to pull it?

I was looking at the Giant Spined Chaos beast, but it occurs to me that two of them wouldn't work, since they look the same. Bile Trolls, maybe? Maybe some burly slaves or something - though those might not be big enough...

Pic related is what I'm going for, as opposed to the usual "mound of Nurglings".
>>
>>52759863
metal and plastic don't really matter to me unless we are talking orgre sized or bigger models.
Then it's just more convenient to use plastic.

The distinction is for me more like metal>resin.
Mainly cause some companies GW suck at resin. Ironically most smaller outfits I bought from never had a problem with faulty casts.
>>
>>52759992
the chaos altar is being held by some burly and bloated looking mutants. Those would be perfect as nurgle guys.

Rats would work well for nurgle too I think and you got loads of models to choose from, not just from GW's skaven range, but anybody who does minis for d&d and the usual suspects.
>>
>>52759827
pls?
>>
>>52760240
I think I'm gonna go with the Bile Trolls. They're burly enough that they could be, say, Plague Ogryn slaves and work for 40k or Fantasy. Good mix of slavery/beastmaster. Rats are just too iconically Skaven.

>>
>>52761210
That I'm not sure about. I would. You may even see some primer under the paint when you strip. Let them soak for 24-48 hours and using gloves, scrub with a mixture of a toothbrush and a knife. Rinse the paint off after scrubbing, dunk in soapy water, rinse again, dunk in clean water, put on towel to dry.

Don't make the mistake I did and hold your arms against your stomach while you're scrubbing. I ended up with a few burns because I simply wasn't thinking.

Right, yeah, so standard procedure unless there is primer already. Most guides I've seen just do dry brushes or paint over real quickly, and the results seem to vary. I have heard rumors some are actually a clear plastic underneath.

There's one a dark future gaming that I can't link because flags as spam. Only real clever trick is taking a cloth back bandaid to make some canvas texture.

Looking at what you've already done, you'll more or less just be stacking shapes like the waist plates on your dudes. Only thing to be careful of is not putting too much pressure on bags higher up the stack at the risk of deforming ones lower on it. This can be completely negated as a concern if you make 1 layer, and let it cure before starting on the next above it. Your choice of work carefully, or take a little more time.

Tried a few different brands and techniques back in the day, but was never able to make it work. The worst part is that gesso can be kind of a pain to strip depending on the brand, and will cloud up your stripper something awful. All around just not worth it imo.

Haven't painted anything since high school 4+ years ago. Just put the skin down so far--thoughts?
>>
>>52763411
As far as base coating and washing go--it's fine, albeit boring. Add some highlights or something.
>>
>>52763411
Kinda hard to tell from that pic. Face looks fine, if a little bland. If you look at the feet you can see lots of wash pooling between the toes; if you use thinner coats of the wash or manipulate it with your brush while it dries you don't get that ugly look. The feet also look overly drybrushed, and looking at the marks on the base my hunch is that you did it with too much paint still on the brush. Not bad for a first model back though, looks pretty much like what mine when I did the same thing.
>>
>>52763444

You can use 2-part epoxy or UHU super glue, you need to wait for the glue to dry a bit and it gets all stringy, then you can cross it over. It's a messy technique for a messy result.I recommend using a cocktail stick or an old fucked brush.

Rates anyone?

Does the binocular guy look ok? I've been torn whether to have his arm hanging slightly below eyelevel or just be looking through, since he has a helmet. If he doesn't look through, the arm position looks off, like he's clucking like a chicken.
>>
>>52767949
The light situation is not really great for photographing minis, but the camo looks pretty cool.
>>
>>52767976
Yeah sorry about that, need to build a proper lightbox at some point. Feedback on the binocular pose?
>>
>>52768045
You know what, I'm actually sold on the binos. When you think about, it would be both inconvenient and dangerous for a forward scout to have to remove their helmet everytime they wants to scope things out. Thus it has manual view and a connection that sends a higher-def view into their helmet display when level with the lens.

What do you mean? I highlight the different coloured streaks almost individually.
>>

I meant edge highlight the color individually when they cross an ard edged detail of the miniature.

Dark grey on the edges on the black streaks, lighter brown on the edges on the streaks of brown and so on...
>>
>>52765797
personally i would either prime black for the armor or in actual metal, GW leadbelcher or other gunmetal spray, black will work better for hand painting gunmetal.

if you do prime black, use this method for the robes: basecoat celestra gray then layer ulthuan grey mixed with a drop of white to get as close to white as possible, or just paint pure ulthuan grey. edge highlight white scar.

White Scar player here, i own a ton of bikes but no chimera, though from looking at images of a chimera online i can see bike wheels working, are you making a chimera with wheels?
i'm away from my models at the moment but i can give you some rough estimates of a SM bike tire: 3/4"-1" in diameter and about 1/2" in width.

if your not opposed to using third party bits then you can use kromlech buggy wheels or victoria lamb.
>>
>>52769565
They probably used the original GW tufts, though some of them look smaller. Maybe they cut some. What I want to say is, the GW ones have no green at all, so more like the army painter wasteland or winter tufts. Probably wastland, since that is what the GW ones are supposed to be.
For debris/rocks you better use some kind of sand and some cork as rocks to make it look less bland. I also recommend the GW technicals (armageddon dust etc) they are a little expensive but save time, always lead to the same result and you can also do one base at a time.
In general I recommend you watch some tutorials on basing, so you get a hang on which materials do what.

Look into the Hasslefree and Red Box Games ranges.

The next best thing would be to ebay some actual Conan figures from the board game.
There are 4 or 5 different version of him as warrior, general etc.
Not sure if these are standard with the boxed set or if they were kickstarter exclusive, but for the moment you should be able to still find them.

Another thing I think might work is if you look into the Hail Cesar or Saga ranges for Hero characters.
Though they are not nearly as much of a beefcake as the guy you posted.

I felt like my turn counter was lacking in readability, and I had the idea to paint the numbers and pointer on it with an antique gold color. Citadel Zandri Dust base coat, Army Painter Greedy Gold, Nuln Oil wash, and then Auric Armour Gold for highlights. I also gave the thing a coat of matte lacquer afterwards so hopefully it stays well protected.

I've never greenstuffed before, I hope beards aren't hard. As for swapping head, the sprue in that model is kinda weird where the neck and a good chunk of the lower head is attached to the torso. Swapping head might work, but the lack of collars might make it messy.

>>52771776

>>
>>52771905

>>
>>52771976
The counter is a resin kit that came from Base-X-of-war.

http://www.base-x-of-war.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=33_71&product_id=230

I made one modification to it in that I glued a 60mm MDF base to the bottom using PVA glue before I painted it. It was just the right size to mount flush with it, and the reason I did it was because it makes the piece easier to pick up off of the table since it has beveled edges (like a GW round base). I also touched up the seam with some plastic putty (aka liquid green stuff).

The way I painted it was to spray the whole thing black with primer, paint it over with Mechanus Gray, wash the seams with Nuln Oil and give it a drybrush with Dawnstone. I also used dawnstone with a little bit of white added to drybrush on some highlights.

If you've got highlights then I'm sure they look better than they appear in that image.

As for weathering, it's simple. Either use a brush or a small sponge with an irregular pattern. Paint on a general shape (find reference material) to mimic rust/paint chip/whatever in a lighter color and then fill it in with darker color.

Best way to figure it out: prime a piece of sprue and weather it to your heart's content.

Recessed color: base colour + brown or black
Highlight color: base colour + orange or yellow (try not to add too much of either--red is a bit finicky to highlight.)

There's also other weathering methods you can try.

You're right, that's the point of real life camo.

Finally got to working on my Black Coach again after like a year of procrastination. The base is pretty much completely finished now. I had to get inventive because I wanted a transition between dry land made of cork board and epoxy water with nice sharp looking edges and corners, which you can see has part of an old bridge on it. The bridge just just about exactly 50mm, in case some rules lawyer gets fussy about where the coach ends and the horses start (the corpse cart rules are kind of stupid in that way because Games Workshop didn't even manufacture a correctly sized base for it).

The next step is to paint the skeletal steeds, then glue / pin everything together (it's a pain in the ass to try and dry-fit this thing together since the horses can't stand up on their own). The vampire lord and coffin need to be painted too but they're lower priority. A bunch of stuff is magnetized too-- the tailgate of the coach, the coffin lid, and the bottom of the coffin all have rare earth magnets, plus I put a metal plate on the floor of the coach so that the coffin stays put. Not sure if the driver will be magnetized or just glued in place yet.

I also am mixing in newer bits to make it look less antiquated. I had a bunch of re-cast bits I got from Z including some Black Knight skeletal steeds and a Hexwraith's upper body which I put on the driver. The driver's whip came from my Corpse Cart kit, as did the lanterns on the back. I will be adding some silicone flames to the torches to better create the illusion of motion, since that's something the original model severely lacked (and the new driver and horses should help alleviate).

Any harm in mixing Super Clean with Simple Green?

Use a sponge or a piece of foam and lightly dab some lead belched on the model. Look up WarhammerTV's weathering tutorial, or any ork/guard vehicle video.

Nevermind. Read the back of SG and saw there's no bleach or anything.

err... shure anon but you got to help me a bit then. her inquisitor has a deamon weapen and a true names book and her fellow warband members are deamonhost and a tentacle armed magos using heretical tech. i think the local redemptionists turn their flamers en eviscerators on them while crying heresy if they walk into town

How should a primer feel when applied? I've got two smooth coats and three sandy-textured coats.

For a second there I thought that the orc in the top middle was using the Space Marine below him as a mount.

Alright so, ended up gluing the wings and burst cannons and moved them a bit back. Feels a lot better now. Missiles still pinned/magnetized as they work and it's a useful counter to see how many I have left.

As far as I know it's done, but I may add more detail to the wings or bits to the bottom (especially where the wings meet the drone). Rate/Advise?
>>
>>52777219
Looking so much better.
I would probably alter the sides of the wings to make the shape less blocky and overall obviously cut out.
>>
>>52777268
Thank you. Yeah I'm going to go over the edges with a small file to round the edges, makes it more aerodynamic. As far as shape goes, I tried to make them as close as possible to the official wings, just the positioning is different as I don't know why they decided to make them pointing forward. What's the deal with those?

A lot of planes had wings like that back in the day. Personally I think it looks fucking awesome.
>>
>>52777316
I think its to make it look more like an advanced plane.
There are a bunch of advanced planes today that have forward swept wings and are really good. They also require three computers plus a pilot to fly them.
I think it was for that advanced, silent look, so you can tell they are not conventional drones.

What are some decent models to use as basis for a child?

Looking for 40k's scale, so a bit shorter than a guardsmen, hopefully without awful "old model" syndrome where they have giant feet, hands, and heads and look like disgusting hobbits.
>>
>>52777704
>>52777746
Oh shit! The more you know, I guess. Fug, now I like them but meh, I like my drone as is. Thanks for the lesson lads.
>>
>>52777838
Incidentally, you could probably use GW's hobbit models, if you just file the hair from/replace their feet.

This guys knife arm. If just because it was so easy, looks so good, and got me started on converting.
>>

Sandy but not grainy

You want roughness for paint to latch on to as that's the whole point of primer, but too rough and it causes bumpiness and ruins your smooth layers

Most people prime too much and end up with 100% shiny smooth coats. It's ok for the primer to look see through or speckled with small amounts of grey plastic in some spots.

Obviously this ruins lazy strategies like colored primer as a basecoat. For those situations one should either airbrush, quickly basecoat over the primer with a 100% color match, or simply settle for a thick primer coat.

I'm enjoying that blood bowl orc in the back round more than anything.>>52758793
>>
>>52751769
Most models have a variety of colours. Grey would let you paint dark armour and light cloaks and flesh easily, where going with black or white primer would make achieving one or the other of those parts more difficult.

anyone have tips or a good how to on sculpting robes? I'm going to need to be sculpting some rather large and raggedy robes for an archmagos conversion and need to get some practice in before I actually tackle the job

Just got into 40k and decided to play Renegades and heretics. Does anyone have a guide for making fatigues look torn/shredded? I wanted to model my cadians from the start collecting box look like volscani cataphracts.
