A gullible dimwitted elven thief with incredible looks, a brilliant but delusional and extremely fragile elven mage, a quick tempered and distracted travelling cleric, a conspiracy spouting and racist half elven ranger, and a spaghetti spilling ex soldier who's on the run, are excellent at alternatively helping some locals while offending and insulting others, and trying to make their way in some dangerous orc and goblin infested frontier lands at the edge of civilization and discover the whereabouts of an ancient fallen dwarven kingdom that's hidden somewhere in this mountain range without dying ignoble deaths.

Also the ranger has been tricked into being part of a murder plot on a noble that may or may not explode in his face at some future point in time.

If I am, then so is one of the (current) players, who actually came up with the idea. We are doing the campaign in two parts, me doing the first and him the second. I'm playing it straight as classic D&D, evil wizards, liches, and dragons, with just little bits of foreshadowing (that they attribute to just illusion spells of someone trying to mess with them).

When we get to a certain point, we switch to the other guy being DM, which is when shit will really go down hill. The other two that are players throughout the whole thing are his wife and my brother, both of which are fans of the genre. We've orchestrated similar kinds of bait and switch games that ended up lots of fun, as shyamalamadingdong twists are our guilty pleasures.

Not the route to go for everyone, but when you get a small, close group who are all on the same page, you manage to find creative ways to make things fun. It helps that all of use have been good friends for 10+ years.

We all were trying to be the best heroes that we could, but end up saving the wrong people who happen to be a doomsday cult.
