So... a friend of mine from 3 editions ago is suggesting we get back into 40k. I know 8th is right around the corner. Anyone know of a cheap place to pick up the Ork and Space Marine 7th edition Codexes on the cheap? We'd be fine with PDF as well. He already managed to secure 2 7th ed rulebooks used.

Predictions
>general book will only include new point costs and the new movement values
>a compendium of all the races weapons assigning them a sub class like flamer, plasma, missile, etc; plus the new rend values
>codex won't be invalidated but you'll need the general to play the updated version, so legions and other supplements will be valid
>the game will remain mostly the same but with the only real change being battleshock which Marines will ignore
>psyker phase absorbed back to movement phase
>new missions and scenarios but barely any new rules
>>
>>52740622

Love me some outflanking Scout Sentinels. I also love deep striking Scions. Astropaths from IA help too. Gotta love people who assume Guard are static and then I have 2 groups of 2 Sentinels and 10-15 Scions harassing their back lines blowing up tanks and stealing objectives.

best thing about it I think is the fact your opponent cannot protect against it to a huge degree. It's psychological, so they may end up making mistakes.

Of course it can fail but 2/3rds of the time, it works every time.
>>
Is there any way to justify using the Thunderstrike Gauntlet on an Imperial Knight? It looks so cool, but seems to be a little useless since you need that I4 to avoid Chainfist based death.

Freaking 1k Sons can't keep up with Slaanshi glory. Honestly 1 little squad of Sisters of Silence and you all puss out.
>>
>>52740763
No, you're paying to cripple yourself and the extra rules are literally worthless as a "benefit" of using the gauntlet, if it were at least ap3 the throw attack it might be situational but either way you're paying extra to strike last.

Most of us have seen the Ultramarines movie and come to the conclusion that, while meme-worthy, it was a pretty shit movie. If you were given the chance to make another 40k movie, but good this time, like... Warcraft, but sticking to the lore and not mutilating it, what would you go for? I'd like to see the events of Wrath of Magnus on the big screen, with awesome sfx, personally.
>>
>>52740812
SoS aren't difficult to take out. T3 with 3+ means bolters fuck you up, even non-AP3 ones. It's the Culexus that's the nightmare.
>>
>>52740889
Baneblade and Shadowsword would make a great movie, I'd also like to see the Age of Apostasy siege of Terra.
>>
>>52740889

Eisenhorn trilogy.
>>
Where does the multimelta on a LR go? I've never used one, so need to know where to measure from.
>>
>>52740659
Seems fairly likely, although not sure what the odds of a separate book for wargear are.

In my dream world, they would keep the first two books of the current system (i.e. background and painting guide), split the rules into a couple of books (probably rules, dataslates, wargear and scenarios) and let you buy only what you need. Chances of that actually happening seem pretty slim.

On a somewhat divergent topic, has anyone here played Betrayal at Calth? I've been playing through it with my housemate and his girlfriend (me playing the word bearers, we did a big painting session and two games today) and there seems to be a bit of a bias towards the WB in the games we've played. Their card effects generally seem a little better, they get more dudes, terminators are crippled by only having one per hex and the dreadnaught is a fucking abomination. So far it's 3-0 to me and roomie is getting bit frustrated.

I'd honestly go for the "A Thousand Sons" movie and then maybe a second part with "The Wrath of Magnus"

The Thousand Sons are one of the best stories inside 40k lore imo
>>
>>52740889
I completely agree, but only because I'm a TS fanboy.

I think The Horus Heresy would be great but it would need a full TV series. Single unconnected events would be the ideal material for a 40k movie like one the Wars for Armageddon.

The real question is, which races would you like to see on the big screen represented that aren't the usual Marines/Chaos/Orks/possibly Eldar that are the usual in most forms of 40k media.

I'd vote Nids, Tau and Necrons, they sorely need some media spotlight, Aside from DoW they've never appeared in anything (Fire Warrior game notwithstanding)

I didn't know what a melta gun looked like, it's 2nd first vehicle I've put together.
>>
>>52740889
I'll rather choose something simpler, big events like that need a shit load of back story, Eisenhorn series, the death korps series or the Uriel Ventris series need less background beyond "in the grim darkness of the 40000 millennium...." The Horus heresy is way too long or the gaunt ghosts would be better produce as series.

Hellsreach book would be awesome.
>>
>>52740982
The place you glued it on the god-damn model. You're not trying to use wargear that isn't represented on your citadel miniature are you?
>>
>>52741088
I magnetized all of my stuff

The LR has sponsons, pintle, and turret mounted weapons all magnetized so that I can switch out between redeemer, crusader, and regular.

Also the doors are magnetized, if for some reason I wanted the sponsons on the back
>>
>>52740889
I want the guy who directed mad Max to make a Gunheads movie
>>
>>52740909
Then why did the 1k Sons whimper and moan about Sisters of Silence so much and blame that on their loss, and the psychic jamming.
>>
>>52741067
I for one believe Hellsreach would be perfect as a movie or any astartes stand alone series book and would easily out sell the Warcraft movie
>>
>>52740830
Damn. Ah well, giant chainsaw is cool too.

>>52740889

Personally I think the Forge of Mars books would make a decent movie trilogy, but if I have to pick a GW campaign book it's got to be the Damocles Crusade, but told properly. Most of the rage was made from shitty writing, it would be easy to turn it into a proper war film. It's got everything good, you could pick just one aspect, and you wouldn't have to deal with explaining the whole complex background of the Horus Heresy or the Warp so much.
>>
>>52741154
Because the rhinos get the psychic null field as well.
>>
>>52741165
I'd really enjoy a less "space opera" of the heresy, but more of a character study of Fulgrim in the HH novel.

Imagine something like saving privite ryan, with the fact that there are these huge continent spanning battles going on but you only get to see one big one, and then the rest is just the effects on the characters.

I'd like to see Fulgrims' tragic arc there.
>>
>>52740889

I've always wanted to see a Band of Brothers style miniseries for Gaunt's Ghosts. 10 one hour episodes per season, you could do each book really well.

It also doesn't require a lot of explanation so it's gonna be able to draw more people into it. Straight action fans will just see a bunch soldiers in space killing crazy scary hordes of cultists, people who want more story can listen to how the cultists corrupt everything wherever they go and an entire system of planets is being cleansed of them, and people who are already fans will instantly know what's going on without needing an explanation.
>>
>>52741154
I dunno, because it's in a book and the author will write whatever needs to be written?

I'm talking strictly tabletop

Yeah, I would be so down for that. I'd almost want to make it a trilogy, with the first one the Istvaan Virus-Bombing and the second the Dropsite Massacre and the third the walls of Terra, maybe as a White Scar to justify the smaller squad action. Also something from Morturg and Decima's perspective in the first movie.

I find Istvaan V and Ferrus Vs Fulgrim the most emotional and dramatic battle in all of 40K, no matter what the SW and 1Ksons say about Prospero.
I don't even play an Istvaan Legion, I play Mechanicum, but if I had to pick it would probably be EC.

I actually wanted to ask the same thing before going to sleep, but you beat me to it

I've started building and painting a Dreadnought today, did the base colour on the body, a bit on the arms and the legs (the legs already got a wash and some drybrushing). It's all still detachable, so I can get to all the parts, and I'll leave the right weapons arm unglued, so I can easily swap out weapon loadouts. It's pretty tight anyway, and doesn't just slip off.
Hoping to get the Dreadnought ready tomorrow, then I'll start on a Rhino.

I don't know either but that's what they blamed our loss on the Sisters, and the denial of their psychic powers. I don't know much about their army comps I wasn't paying attention to that.

I do agree that TS effectiveness is 90% in the psychic phase. You can't have a shitload of infantry AND a shitload of sorcerers unless you play 3k+ points, but you can still field SOME infantry.

They dont need a lot of infantry, played a 1500 point game against them yesterday, 10 terminators, 10 rubrics, a heldrake ahriman and a sorcerer, i killed 2 models. Once they get blessings, they are basically immortal, that flying book makes them faster than they appear, and the characters are decent in cc because of biomancy and force. Game was a tie until turn 6 when he was able to score every objective he drew. If i wasnt playing necrons i probably would have lost turn 3, since all their shooting is ap3. Fearless, slow and purposeful, ap3, many strong psykers, formation buffs, All of these things are fine by themselves but combined tsons are just broken and not fun to play against, combined with magnus they are just stupid op.

>>52742026
Admittedly my list had no ap2 except a war scythe and deathmarks. I went in blind, both of us have several armies and just agreed on points so theres no chance of list tailoring.
I had an over lord with warscythe, phase shifter, nightmare shroud, res orb
5 lychguard with sword and board
3 tombblades
5 immortals
63 warriors, 10 in an ark, 2 squads of 20 and 1of 13
And 5 deathmarks. I got the reroll morale pinning and fear warlord trait. Ahriman has a set trait to infiltrate d3, he rolled a 6 so his whole army basically moved 6 inches closer, then he seized the initiative. He jumped 5 terminators up 12 with the astral grimoire, immobilized my ghost ark with the autocannon, other than that i lost 3 warriors. My turn i shuffled around, repaired one warrior and shot everything at the squad with ahriman 5 termies and ex sorcerer. He made every save. Turn 2 he jumped the rubrics up a building to gain Los on a squad, destroyed the ghost ark then charged the squad of 13 warriors. Killed a few but i made the morale test. My turn 2 deathmarks killed 1 terminator, and i charged ahriman with my warlord and lychguard. What followed was a slugfest that lasted 8 rounds of combat. We did the math, if a scarab occult terminator has a blessing on it you need to do 128 wounds to kill 1.
>>
>>52742182
>>52742251
They're not bad but they're really not all that.

The invulnerable save is only on one side of the knight and you can only change it at the start of the enemy shooting phase, leaving it very vulnerable to witchfire powers. It's armour isn't that impressive either once you get past the invulnerable.

It does a lot of damage but it's easy to bring down with the right weaponry, leaving a big 400 point hole in your army.
>>
>>52742268
Thank you anon. Off on my way to hopefully some Solar Auxila.
>>
>>52742270
Ahriman took 2 wounds from my overlord then he did a glorious intervention with the exalted sorcerer, eventually he killed the overlord because of force
>>
>>52742270
Sweet jesus. I'll call it unlucky then. Your warrior blobs should've pumped out enough shots to tear his meager infantry to pieces. Sure Rubrics have the 4++ but even 2+ termies die to massed fire, I should know, I field SO too.

Play again and take out the sorcerers ASAP.

Ad mech don't need it. Some armies it fills a useful niche but Ad mech don't need a dakka knight and melee knights are tough to get into combat.

Yes he does. You said he had 10 terminators (max 2 squads of 5) and 10 rubrics (max 2 squads of 4+1 sorc), Ahriman and a Sorc or ExSorc. That's enough to get the War Cabal formation, but not enough to activate its Favoured of Tzeentch bonus.

To do that you need 4 sorcs, 3 units of rubrics and 3 units of terminators which would be 1200 just for the infantry. If you say so, but he was not eligible for the roll.

It explicitly states he only has permission to replace the Tech Priest Dominus in a Cult Mechanicus Formation.

And if you want to be really pedantic about it the Dominus Maniple is technically neither AdM or a Skitarii formation as the data sheet has no inherent faction and GW have come out and said you must use the exact units on the data sheet in the start collecting boss. Which is fucked up because some boxes say Ranger, some say Vanguard.

I love my blood angels captain, I gave him a jump pack, thunder hammer and lightning claw.
Thunder hammers look so good I considered giving one to my assault sargent or even, as crazy as it sounds, to my tactical sargent.

It's a shame it has no synergy with any of the blood angels special rules (+1s +1I on the charge) but it works well on the captain.

I mean we only know of like a handful of craftworlds, which should at best equate to a planetary population. Who knows about DE numbers or Harlequins either? Though I'm doubting that there are hordes of space clowns just waiting to flood the universe from the webway.

Tau on the other hand live in a super dense star cluster, the number of planets they control as well as pop. numbers are unknown because GW = bad at maths. But I think there are more known Septs then we have known craftworlds. And they've got to have a decent pipeline of just Fire Caste alone as they've been feeding them into the Imperials, ala the last campaign where they were just throwing bodies at the Raven Guard and White Scars just to side track them.

Eldar don't formally control any known sector, but are scattered across the galaxy in decent numbers, and the DEldar have a gigahueg city in the webway. Also because I personally doubt that a race that's been more powerful and popular than humans in the past could have their numbers dwindle so in merely 10,000 years, but it is a possibility.

>tau feeding Fire Warriors into the Imperials
That's more just bad writing, as is most of the Tau campaign stuff, rather unfortunately. I'm rather sad about that, as I want to like Tau, but very little of anything written about them is actually legitimately good. I hate how they went from Combined Arms to Suits are the best we don't need Tanks or Fliers anymore.

You also have to remember the fact that every Eldar citizen is trained for combat, whereas the Tau strictly have the Fire Caste.

But another thing is that the Tau are too small. They don't own a sector, which is important, as the Imperium of Man own many sectors, as well as the fact that lore-wise, the Tau are under the threat of Mankind getting annoyed enough to send an actual, meaningful Crusade against them and eradicate them.

My post is very garbled because I am feeling very sick right now, sorry.

Don't forget that 95% of the Eldar were wiped out almost instantaneously in the Fall. The Eye is the heart of their empire and the Eldar at their height had pulled back towards it as they had little reason to be widespread because of their mastery of technology and their use of the webway. No reason to have settlements all over the galaxy when you can travel to any world you would actually want to visit using a short jaunt; and you sure as hell dont need the resources. Humans are only distributed the way they are because of how warp travel functions.

>more powerful and popular than humans in the past could have their numbers dwindle so in merely 10,000 years

Okay, everything falls apart here because apparently you forgot about The Fall, and Slannesh literally eating their entire race. We are not talking about like eating a big part of the eldar race, or a majority, we're talking pushing them to extinction. We are talking about the Eldar losing every major and minor world they held. The exodite worlds are their assbackwards hillbilly outpost so far out in the boonies they they managed to survive. And the only other survivors were those lucky enough to have been in a safe part of the webway (Dark Eldar), and some of the 1st craftwrolds that left (because there were those that weren't far enough out and we're destroyed or sucked in subsequently as well).

>I hate how they went from Combined Arms to Suits
totally agree with this.
>They don't own a sector
That still says nothing, because everything is pretty much owned by the Imperium. Look at the whole map, and besides the EoT, everything is pretty much Imperial Space. Is there a Necron sector? Is there an Eldar sector? or tyranids? They are all still major players and it has nothing to do with owning their own little shiny sector.

They also only "won" the Damocles Crusade because a much larger threat emerged that the Imperium needed to focus on. Prior to the Tyranids rolling in with Kraken and some other hive fleets the Tau were having a comparatively rough fight with what was then a relatively small crusade fleet.

Now they curb stomped the crusade which they upped to being the size of a massive battlefleet and handedly out manourvered Imperial Navy vessels between systems despite having FTL that is barely a quarter the speed of a Chartiste Trader.

This is what most people bitch about when they talk about plot armor for the Tau in the new fluff. The writers establish things about the Tau (like how much slower their starship are) then promptly ignore it and have them somehow do exactly the thing they were played up to not be able/wouldn't do and ham fistedly toss them the win.

I enjoyed the fluff more when they were a dangerous and adaptable enemy on the local scale but we're woefully underprepared and outmatched when encountering anything beyond fringe colonies. It gave them the little fish in a big ocean feel while keeping the underdog flavor with their own dark aspects. Now it comes off as can-do-no-wrong good guy wankery with some Shonen esque deus ex secret technique that always beats the bad guy no matter the odds.

Dude that was cannon in the 1st Tau codex, and iirc never mentioned again. GW doesn't even talk about space ship speeds anymore because the whole system is nonsensical to begin with, and paints them into the corner in terms of writing.

Granted GW are still shit writers, but thinking the Tau (whose whole trope is a race with rapidly advancing tech) is still stuck with snail speed starships, because it was mentioned in their 1st codex, is silly.

I mean, according to GW, due to the variances of the warp, fleets end up arriving years later.
And yet we've got worlds being taken over basically overnight and then some mary sue arriving just in the nick of time, etc. etc.

...I am Kol Janin the Hellblessed, One with the Truth, Eightfold Champion of the Empyrean and once-Coryphaus to 109th Host XVII. And my immediate reaction is "fuck, how does ANY of this work?!?" because, as a rule, I would be currently banished to the warp and supposed to be sending signs and portents to my old Host.

The idea is that they need them to discover/aquire/properly desecrate whichever macguffin it is this time before they can bring me back early and "crusade once more beneath the gaze of the Primordial Truth made flesh". Which is to say, act *super* smug while cruising around the Maelstrom because they roll with a personal Prince of Undivided, fully manifested and cursebound to their righteous cause. Except when their righteous cause is resummoning me to the banner of their righteous cause, of course.
Which does immediately present some problems. I'm supposed to know how and what to send for the portents thing based on details of the bind-curse underpinning this whole thing, but I never actually wrote those details when I created this fluff. Not having my banishment lifted means being stuck in the warp, where I might have to start explaining how "Undivided" managed to grant me ascension. I have a feeling that'd be an awkward conversation.

Dark eldar don't need to go to war. They literally just pop into Realspace when they're bored, cripple their target, steal a bunch of shit like such as people, and fuck off back to Commorragh
>>
>>52745990
I'd imagine that there are probably a few billion Dark Eldar by the estimates of the sheer size of Commorragh and it's neighboring realms. My personal understanding is that Commorragh itself could be roughly the size of North and South America(probably still bigger), but literally ALL city with no wildlife. Remember, they MOVED 4-5 dying stars into the Webway to use as their suns(called the Ilmaea) and coats the entirety of the city in a dim greenish light.

But yeah, DE don't ever go to war unless there's a Dysjunction and that only happens in the webway(read: Commorragh), but it's more of a survival of the fittest when the Daemons come to town. Otherwise, DE just go out in raiding parties as a part of their Kabal. There's no established DE Military that anyone can join. You can be "convinced" to join the Kabal of the Black Heart, lead by the Supreme Overlord of Commorragh, though.
>>

>>
>>52746166
>they MOVED 4-5 dying stars into the Webway to use as their suns

If you need 5 Suns to light up your city then it clearly isnt the size of a continent, its probably closer to the size of 5 solar systems since you need 5 stars to light the whole thing and that would be the parts of the city where sunlight reaches, imagine a city the size of 5 systems and then its depths underground where the sunlight doesnt reach and its nothing but dark alleys and shitty artificial light.

if u had just posted "what line ? :^)" with an iw pic, the joke woulda worked a lot better
