There is no nature fuel so travel on foot depends on knowing this sites and going from one to another in one day very fast. Lighting a fire in the cold,cold night summon dangerous wildlife.

Sandworm equivalent: kilometers long "leviathan" whales swimming beneath the ice plains, enormous shadows producing an eerie song. At any moment they can break through and kill everyone. Settlements must be built away from the ice.

The difference between the arctic and a real desert is that the water that does fall freezes when it hits the ground. You can melt it to drink. Additionally, in the summer, if you're far enough south, there's generally a lot of water on the surface because the water table is so high due to permafrost.

A lot of animism, some ancestor worship, generally what you would expect or imagine from a native American/First Nation belief system. "Trickster", "Great Spirit", etc all have their appearances, but their culture has been unquestionably tainted by white culture over the years. The vast majority of inuit, especially older ones, are Anglican or Catholic at this point and their mythology has well and truly become nothing but stories.

Leviathans should be something like this pic but with the same unhurried attitude of a Greenland Shark, at least the older ones.

Older ones are filter feeders that predominantly live off of plankton and krill but sometimes eat larger things by accident, given their size it isn't efficient for them to actually hunt. Young ones are capable of hunting actual fish efficiently and are the most dangerous as humans are fucking tasty.

They are the only organism so far discovered that has no evident Terrestrial origin. Everything else alive in the known universe is an adapted version of something that was brought from Earth. Where did they come from? It's unknown.

I had this idea that in the vastness of space some peculiar things happen that can't be explained one such being Crystalized Suns. Basically it's like a resource that can be mined, hot to the touch and able to be used for powering anything that shouldn't be physically possible to power through any other way. Companies find them in space and terraform solar systems in order to mine them, it's crazy dangerous though and if you hit the wrong place while chipping away at the Sun you can cause a solar flare to erupt from the crystal.

I was thinking the leviathans and their respective microorganisms did this. Algae covers the Ice and fills the sky, darkening the world by being sun traps. The leviathans are just masses of probiscae that feed on and protect the Algae, which form deep veins in the ice. The natives know that the best way to feed and get heat is to take it from the leviathans, only disturbing the Algae enough to attract an arm through the Ice. The leviathans are more protective of the Algae than themselves.

The "spice" is ambergris - produced by massive creatures that swim in the oceans under the ice crust.

The ecology revolves around the creatures on the surface interacting with the creatures under the surface. Many animals can exist in both areas, like seals or penguins. Native "humans" evolved to be somewhat like this - the don't have gills but often swim to gather food or suchlike.

The deeper down into the water you go, the warmer it becomes, changing from near freezing at the surface, to a pleasant 30 degrees about 100m down, to much hotter at lower depths, due to the heat generated by the core of the planet (perhaps the planets irregular obrit or shape causes it to contract and expand, creating heat in the centre, or perhaps is has a molten rock centre?)

It could have magma jets or suchlike warm areas where there are hotpools or a supply of hot water that people above ground use to stay warm.

Natives have created ingenious ways of locomotion - dog sleds with special ice runners - they heat water up in their mouths, then apply the water to the runners - just like eskimos do. This allows very low friction and easy transportation.

Look at documentaries on roald amundsen and what he learned from his living with ekimos. He learned all that dog sled stuff from them and that allowed him to make it to the south pole and back easily, as opposed to Shackleton whose sleds were nightmares to pull, and who was forced to man-pull all the sleds in the end, after all their ponies died (iirc)

One of the planets in a SWN game I ran was a stormy/oceanic Arrakis. The larval form of "mist fly" encouraged constant cloud cover causing most surface bound ecosystems to rely on debris from above or chemosynthesis. The spice analogue was called Salt, it was closer to to quartz with its electromagnetic properties but was harvested by evaporating water that mature mist fly had spawned in.
Because of sandbox game design the players decided to go and participate in a civil war a system over but it was fun to set up.
