Return of Lightning Bolt edition
Do you still play decks with Bolt in them? Or have you moved on to different removal now that Fatal Push is here and Bolts been on the downswing?
Will the new Morbid Delver bird with Deathtouch see any play?
What about Harsh Mentor in decks outside of Burn?
>>
>Do you still play decks with Bolt in them?
How else would I play burn?
>Will the new Morbid Delver bird with Deathtouch see any play?
Probably
>What about Harsh Mentor in decks outside of Burn?
I wouldn't see the point, but stranger things have happened
>>
>Do you still play decks with Bolt in them?
Yeah sometimes. U/W control is my main squeeze though
>Will the new Morbid Delver bird with Deathtouch see any play?
Not a chance
>What about Harsh Mentor in decks outside of Burn?
In the sideboard yes
>>
>>52729777
>been playing Burn as my modern deck of choice for quite a while now
>know the ins and outs of the deck generally make top 8 at FNM with it
>watching someone play the deck facing Living End after my match ended
>making mistake after mistake, even small things like the way he sequenced his lands
>fucking running Blood Moon out of SB
>slams it down with a fucking Boros Charm and Destructive Revelry in hand locking himself out of casting colored spells
>his opponent plays a Madcap into Platinum Emperion next turn
>could have easily won by Reveling the Emperion and Boros Charming next turn
How the fuck can people be so bad at playing such a simple deck? To make it even worse he had a fucking anime mat.
>>
>>52729854
Holy hell.
Jesus you'd think one would learn about the deck before playing it, or at least fucking read blood moon.
Anyways burn bro, are you going to run harsh mentor?
>>
>>52729918
It was just mistake after mistake. Like fetching tapped shocks with a Fulminator out, or not floating a mana from a land that Fulminator hit so you can cast a two mana spell.
On the subject of Harsh Mentor I will not personally be running him, I think hes a great card and he certainly pulls his weight in some of the harder matchups for Burn such as Merfolk, Affinity, and Bant Eldrazi, but overall I feel like Lavamancer is still better as hes always able to get in for damage as long as he isnt removed. I like Mentor, I really like that he hoses Eldrazi Tron and Affinity but its hard for me to find room for him in such a tight list. Still the thought of having both Mentor and Eidolon down at the same time makes me consider running it just for a few nights. I personally dont see a lot of Affinity in my local meta which factors into the decision a lot since Mentor absolutely destroys that deck.
>>
>>52730008
Was it their first time playing the deck? I know when I went from just playing a friend at my house to an actual shop I made mistakes just from nervousness/not being used to playing against any other deck. But on the other hand the blood moon in naya burn is so fucking retarded.
And yea, I don't think mentor would be too useful for my meta but I'm still going to pick up a playset.
>>
>>52730129
I have no idea, I just like to watch Burn matchups and compare what they do to what I would do. I weep when I see the deck played badly. Ill try to find a few Mentors at Prerelease. Im excited for the cards in Amonkhet, hopefully see some new strategies emerge in Modern from them.
>>
>>52730129
I almost think Mentor slots into and reinvigorates RW Taxes with Arbiter, Ghost Quarter amd Thalia to really mess with your opponents manabase.
>>
>>52730150
>>52730168
Besides mentor I'm pretty stoked for the green god since I'm going to be building mono green stompy once I finish burn (still need some fetches, an eidolon, and some sb cards)
Also maybe red white hatebears will be a thing, I'd build the shit out of that
>>
>>52730168
Hatebears will never be good. As much as I love the deck It's pretty obsolete nowadays. Discard the relevant one and remove the rest. Even if it gets a soft lock going the deck lacks a consistent threat to end the game before the opponent recovers. It's trash.

>>
>>52730419
I'm just giving it to him(you) straight. It's no sense in running these subpar decks and getting railroaded by a tier 1 deck. What is goblins gonna do against affinity, shadow jund and tron/eldrazi? Do you go around buying players free packs? Because that's essentially what you are doing by showing up at a tournament with a deck like goblins.

You have to believe that someone who is playing goblins either can't afford a better deck, or just wants to have fun playing cause they think goblins are cool. They want to be the best they can...as long as its with goblins. Telling them to just play affinity isn't helping. Anon didn't say: what deck should I play to win, they said how do I make my jank shit better.

play another atarka's command and a copy of become immense. do some other stuff.
here's what i'd play if i were on 'goblins' for modern.
>>
>>52730394
Playing kitchen table goblins lets you swipe games in a group setting, and they never learn

There's two ways to play Goblins:
>Go crazy and blow up everything/suicide run your buffed army into their face.
>Make Goblins at a very casual pace: fast enough to make you defensible but not enough to be threatening

The second one never fails while playing against a group of more serious players, because you don't look like anything that they have to worry about. Then you just be opportunistic and kill the last guy after they've all duked it out, springing your win con.
>>
I never got to ask yesterday. How did everyones FNM go?

I took Knightfall again and went 2-1. Beat burn and affinity but lost to tokens after getting my spell queller removed late game and he went free lingering souls into flashback lingering souls 2 games in a row. Still went 1-2 that round, though.
>>
>>52730867
i went to work and rode bikes instead. i'll play modern tomorrow though.
>>
>>52730867
2-1 with U/W control. Lost to dredge. I pack a decent amount of hate cards in the board but second game had to mull to 4 and didn't draw shit. Got wrecked. I beat a kiki chord deck, and elves though. Fun times.
>>
>>52730867
Went 3-1 with unfinished burn.
Spirits, storm, grixis control gg ez.
Lost to fucking bogles tho. Game 1 he had the nut draw, game 2 I didn't draw any of my enchantment hate and he outraced me.
>>
>>52730786
Become immense fueled out of what, a few fetches? Besides that, the only reason to play goblin is to avoid spending too much on the manabase, wich is why nobody runs AC
>>
>>52729483

>>
>>52730519

Against DSJ 8whack player is fucked, against affinity it can win. The biggest problem with 8whack isn't the lack of the power but inconsistency.
>>
>>52732216

On second thought DSJ matchup isn't as bad as I thought it was. All you need to do to close the game is goblin grenade+bolt/other grenade.

Still the deck is inconsistent as fuck and that doesn't change no matter the matchup.
>>
>>52730715
What about goblin wardriver?
It doesn't give haste but it also doesn't depend on you playing another spell the same turn.
>>
>>52732352

You want whacker. If you play ogblins you have enough 1 drops to kind-of consistently cast him T3. Lack of haste on wardriver is the dealbreaker (and the fact it doesn't give haste to the other creatures that entered the battlefield this turn).

Just compate:

T3 - float 3 mana, devastating summons, sac 3 lands, whacker -> 10 damage on attack +your other goblins

T3 - wardriver +one drop goblin -> damage done just by your other goblins

>harsh mentor
it's pretty cool, i'd wondered if Burning Tree Shaman was playable in any capacity and concluded that it was probably 1 cmc too high to be considered. i do hate that the effect is not symmetrical...
i could see singleton mentors showing up in chord lists

>>52730867
2-2 on grishoalbrand
R1 outraced dredge to win in three. both of us got a turn 4 kill but i got a turn 3 in. pretty fast in the post-probe meta
R2 drew wrong half of deck and lost to btl scapeshift
R3 punted game 3 against gb elves by slamming wurm instead of pyroclasm (tho he was running an unusual number of ways to kill without combat)
R4 mooned grixis control out of black mana g3, wurmed him. game 1 i got to instakill him when he tapped low for a k command in my end step. i probably would have lost had he been more familiar with the matchup
i still ended up with store credit but i was mad salty about losing to scapeshift and elves. sometimes i steamroll and sometimes i'm reminded how easy it is to lose to the deck or myself. there was also a pickup game i had against junk where he led with hierarch, discard, discard, ooze and where i hardcasted 2 griselbrands. i lost ultimately but it was a pretty entertaining game

Went 4-0 with Abzan shadow. Beat the mirror round 1, got to maelstrom pulse all 4 of his shadows in game 3 which was sweet. Round 2 against mono white death and taxes, opponent makes a bad block in game 3 that costs him the match. Round 3 against skred, cast 5 discard spells in game 1 and they can't answer a single deaths shadow, game 2 I get to play exactly one turn before my opponent concedes for missing his second land drop. Round 4 against BG zombies, it's a slow grindy midrange deck that can't deal with big threats early so I just kill myself on turns 1 and 2 and attack past his dopey grave crawlers. Despite being at table one for the last two rounds my friend who also went 4-0 amd got the pair down in the final round placed first which was a massive tilt

I'm thinking of moving to modo and not play anymore in paper, I'm so tired of fnm's that you can do a 3-1 and don't get shit, alongside pptqs in which the top 8 is decided around round 3-4 because intencional and unintencional draws.

That's just the nature of MTGO. Most prices are lower across the board- but weird stuff like Gorilla Shaman can be expensive online.
>>
>>52733642
the circumstance being you're playing b/w zombies
>>
>>52733649

>>

>Im seeing huge disparity between MTG and MTGO budget decks. Sometimes deck can cost 50 bucks but only 5 tixs

Uh, yeah. That's the whole point of MTGO. it's generally a 10:1 cost ratio.

Speaking of costs, Devoted Druid is now selling at $4. For a common. People are dumb.
>>
>>52733797
Usually yeah, tapped out has links to sites where you can buy the cards at those prices. There's a few exceptions, sometimes cardhoarder will quote a price but won't have of that version of the card in stock and hasn't for years. Happens with really rare promos that they haven't got a copy of in years and that was the last price they ever sold one for.
In general a full deck on MTGO costs about a third of the paper price. Cards with casual appeal have an even higher ratio (e.g. serra's ascendant is 7x more in paper than MTGO), and recent standard cards with high demand get closer to 1 to 1 or are higher online (e.g. collected company is more online than in paper).
>>
>>52733902
>>52733900
Thats nice to hear, I thought mtg might be too expensive for me to play but looks like MTGO is cheap enough
>>
>>52733929
if you're looking to stretch every dollar sites like MTGO wiki price will list all the publicly listed bots and tell you which one is selling the card you want for the lowest price. Other sites will just let you submit a deck list and deliver the cards to you in MTGO but you pay extra that way.
>>

3-1 with mono blue martyr

2-1 abzan DS.
Lost game 2 to a couple lingering souls from the board.

0-2 elves.
Didnt come prepared for the match up and got my shit thoroughly pushed in. Have now added hibernate to the board.

2-0 KCI.
This match up is basically free for the deck. Opponent was visibly tiled.

2-1 Abzan company.
Game one was able to keep bouncing opponents dorks with mist blade + wingcrafter to keep him off mana.
Game 2 was grindy and township eventually overpowered me.
Game 3 commandeered a chord of calling to get master of waves with 6 devotion and swing for lethal.

I, for one, think the Delver Bird is the kind of pressure that Mardu Midrange has been lacking all these years. Will definitively try him out. Should synergize well with the shittons of removal in that deck.

Elves are a serious T2 deck. They can combo off on turn 4 pretty frequently, they can recover from board wipes with coco, and keep their hand full with horizon Canopy and elvish mystic. It's not a great deck but it's solid.

Comes with being a grognard.
I guess new magic players just want to turn creatures sideways and cast Planeswalkers/lightning bolt tribal instead of get outvalued and Mindslavered to death.

Went 3-0 with GB Tron. I played a meme deck round 1 (mono-walls), round 2 I played a new guy that appeared to be playing the 2015 red welcome deck with a bunch of Theros cards thrown in to fill out the deck to 60 cards and a SOL RING, and I crushed the hopes and dreams of my local Ad Naus player round 3 (after he attempted to convince me to draw as well).

Overall it was one of the most boring FNM's I've had lately. Last week I got to play against Eldrazi and Taxes, Burn, and Ad Naus which was sweet.
>>
>>52737907
doesn't that usually just refer to turning a dice, like a d20, down in numerical succession? only d20s I've seen do this were specifically done for use as a life counter in games like mtg though since the numbers are actually printed next to the other numbers on a line

I play knightfall and I run a spellskite main in addition to 2 Selfless spirit since it can just win some matchups and help you combo out in some cases by blanking removal. The higher spirit count is nice because I like having more fliers in addition to Queller since board states can get pretty clogged in some matchups.

For DSJ you're looking to go long and make it hard for them to get in via blocking, once they start casting shadows that's when you want to start applying pressure with fliers or tap their stuff down with coralhelm and swing for a bunch. Rev up those reflector mages they do a ton of work in the matchup.

Against tron you want to bring in the counter magic if you have it and silence and just pray for the best. That or combo them out t3/4. I haven't had a rton of success vs tron desu.

Exile all of their lands and use hand attack to get rid of problem cards. Mainboard Newrakul is also a great way to kill them with their own deck. I've got 4 Collective Brutality main and 2 Thoughtsiezes + a Surgical Extraction in the side.

A lot of its misplays on my opponents part. Theres a bit of luck with Burn, but outplaying your opponents plays some role in winning with the deck. Its not a deck where theres a ton of opportunity to do tricks and fancy stuff and for the most part the deck is on autopilot once you know how to play it, but thats how I like it best straightforward and simple. I would play other Modern decks but I hate Tron with a passion and Burn crushes them so I play it out of spite for Tron in some sense.

>>
>>52739882

>>
>>52739847
In all honesty there just isn't really a good hate card for tron. The best strategies require multiple cards, such as ghost Quarter + surgical, or are 4 mana like crumble to dust. Stony silence only kills half of their game plan, and things like blood Moon and spreading seas just slow them down, and tron has a massive advantage in the late game anyways. Basically you have to stick a clock early and distupt their game plan, usually more than once. If you're not playing a hyper aggro deck they're pretty difficult to beat because it doesn't just fold to hate cards like dredge or affinity do. Tron is in a really good place right now.
>>
>>52739912
pretty sure the game play with ballista is to go for infinite mana either off of miracle sticking vizier of remedies + devoted druid or flipping devoted druid and vizier off of coco then using that infinite mana to do things like duskwatch into dig through whole deck for a ballista large enough to kill or chord into duskwatch into ballista

Every deck requires some thought to play, there's no deck that just windmill slam cards and expect a win. Affinity requires management of synergy, Burn requires proper spell sequencing, Jund needs to know which matchups to play Aggro aggro or control in.

You can trivialize decks all you want, but it doesn't make you right and it doesn't mean that Magic doesnt require a baseline thought just to play.

I swear Ballista is wrong for the deck. Duskwatch is the most intuitive combo piece, but Ballista seems like a bad fit for Coco. Realistically you could win with anything after Duskwatch, like any of the Invoker cards are gg at that point. Almost anything can be used considering you draw every creature and have infinite mana.

Also, add a sac engine so you gain infinite life off vizier+finks. seer gives infinite scrys too.

besides there's already a deck that runs nobles/birds, coco/chords, finks, ewit/rallier, a 2drop that stops -1/-1 counters (melira), a 2drop that ramps (wall of roots), and various g/w goodstuffs creatures.
Just upgrade Abzan Company and move Melira to the sideboard.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love Ballista as a card, it's a castable card at the very least, so it's good in that regard. Just feels wrong.

>>52741410
That guy's list is one Viscera Seer short of being Abzan Company. Vizier is melira/ana but non-legendary, and most people ran a 2-2 split so 4 Vizier is essentially the same.

why get loam when it's literally only played as a 1 of in one non-meme deck in the format? oh wait, a new card spiked it up to 30 bucks a shot. gifts just needs the right print, might as well pick up the foils of proven good cards while they're cheap

Living end is pretty fun, but the best (both competitively and fun) is the one with high land hate (avalanche riders, fulminator mages, blood Moons, all main board), so it becomes less budget friendly. The other cheaper versions are still fun but feel too linear and a lot more dependent on the combo, with fewer options.

Generally the kinds of decks people say are "brainless" are ones where the most consideration you have to make for your opponent is "do they have mana open and can they do something to stop my gameplan?"
>>
>>52743001
ackshually streetwraith and carabid are regarded as the best cyclers in LE, while minotaur is regarded as an unfortunate necessity and many lists don't even play architects anymore, or 2 of at most.

not really. you can cheese some wins off of aggro decks that run out of steam too quickly, and maybe piss off burn players (burn can still beat the deck with good draws and better play), but overall it's considered a meme deck for a reason and the stereotype is people only play it because it (was) cheap.

I'm thinking of 4c with Forbidden Orchards senpai.
What are your thoughts living bro
24 1cmc cyclers
4 streetwraith (will be banned desudesu)
18 lands
8 cascade
3 living end
1 simian?

and 2 flex slots (demon, wurm, spiders/abomination, beast within, extra cascade, fulmy/shriek/faerie)

Sideboard of fulmy+rider

If wraith is gone, maybe i can add 1-2 of my boi glasshulk to complete the pure1cmc cycler memedeck.

My initial test is going to be a R/B focused build with green just being a tiny tiny splash color just for violent outburst. I'm leaning away from the land destruction plan in favor of speed + power. blood moon and riders can come in from the SB for matches where they matter.

4 carabid
4 ceradon
4 horror
4 street wraith
4 mana monkey
4 faerie (no minotaur means they dont get nonbo'd anymore)
3 fulminator
2 demon

4 violent outburst
2 kolaghan's command
3 demonic dread
1 kari zev's
1 flex slot

20 lands

of course, since i'm a retard with a pet deck I'll end up trying it in a hundred different configurations. I'm just glad our card pool expanded so much.

Holy shit really? I'm putting in a breaking/entering in living end right now. Broke the meta, boiz
>>
>>52744314
living end suffered a problem of not being able to close out games because shitting out a bunch of vanilla 3/4s isn't actually that impressive. if the opponent survived the first cascade and managed to rebuild, the deck really struggled to win from there.

it's creatures just got a lot bigger making it's game ending power a lot better. the demon also makes it so the deck can easily wipe the opponent's board if they manage to rebuild after the cascade

the deck as a whole got a substantial power increase from the set. now fuck off and be stupid somewhere else you dumb bastard.
>>
>>52744445

Well other cards too. As >>52744442 pointed out.

I don't exactly think rise//fall is the best potential split card addition to the 75 of a living end list, but I do think it is the sweetest.

Rise can bounce an opponent's creature from a graveyard and one of your creatures to your hand before you cast your cascade spell, and maybe you can even cycle to get it back in the graveyard before you cascade too.

Rise can also bounce an opponent's creature on the battlefield and a cycler from your graveyard so you can cycle again.

Fall can be used against creature-less decks or almost creatureless decks like Ad Naus.

I wasn't fucking talking about the obvious cyclers you mongoloid I was trying to figure out exactly what fucking split card makes a difference to the deck that the guy I was replying to posted about and for the record the answer is literally zero. my question was "how does the new split card rule ease deckbuilding restrictions" not "what changes does living end have from this set" which is clearly fucking obvious
>>
This thread has inspired me to build a burn deck
>>
>>52745211
You're actually retarded.
>>
>>52744688

there are zero relevant enchantments in modern, and they already have a better artifact hate in the form of ingot chewer. Split cards will absolutely not impact living end whatsoever. the only relevant decks that run enchantments run mostly enchantments and point and click hate doesn't cut it
>>
>>52745261
It's for rest in piece dawg
It's a decent sb slot and I'd swap shitty krosan for it. Alongside ingot chewer for more options isn't a bad idea.
>>
>>52745241

okay, I asked how the split card changes were relevant, you went on some dumbass tangent on what changes are coming to the deck which I already knew, and spoke nothing about what difference it actually makes, and called me retarded. you're mentally incontinent.

SSG is actually useful as a measure of the health of the format. When it starts showing up in more decks, something degenerate is going on.
>>
>>52745307
I'm not even the same guy. I can't be assed to explain basic cascade rules to you.
>>
>>52745211
You don't want to cascade into anything except living end. That means you can't put cards with CMC less than 3 into the deck (aside from living end, of course).
>>
>>52745333
Wispmare also does the job, and has the upside of beatz, but the flexibility of wear/tear is sweet. Hide/Seek also works now too.
Some other neats cards it has access to are Rough/Tumble for a Pyroclasm and Dead/Gone for a Dismember alternative.
Idk it's neat new tech

>>
>>52745489
Amonkhet has enough cycling flyers that it might be worth cutting Headshot Minotaur. Then you don't have to worry about whispmare getting hit by the minotaur.
>>
>>52745610

I would cut a planeswalker and maybe an abbot for Terminate. Can't afford to not run it against Eldrazi
>>
>>52745610
One trick worth remembering is if you are above 12 life you can cast DS to cast bone picker for 1.
>>
>>52745676
Possible. I really like the line of b blossom into gideon so maybe a 1:1:1 split. Definitely cutting one or two cards to cram terminates in there because now that you mention it eldrazi goes over most of my removal and terminate triggers bonepicker unlike path and anguished. Path also kind of rapes you on the card disadvantage against reality smasher.

>>52745677
Good point if you're being stopped from draining yourself you can pitch a death's shadow and just play bonepicker. Toying with the idea with orzhov charm in one of my flex slots because of that line. I was thinking of building mardu shadow pre akh but I saw bonesplitter and new gideon and had to make a list.
