Reposting for >>52719235 Dark Mechanicum anon with sisters.

You'll have to do so much work to make the Sisters look (dark)mechanacus that you're better off converting your own counts-as from other models. SoB are so definitely SoB that by the time you've mechanacus'd/chaosed them up you may have well have had used deldar or WHFB/AoS parts from the get-go.

I'll buy the sisters (and maybe greyfax) off of you, and/or offer bits for your conversions if you live in the US if you're interested. (Not against nonUS deals but shipping costs might be more painful for both of us)

[email protected]
>>
>>52726314
You mean like cutting them out after printing or what?
>>
>>52726538
yeah, like the transfer sheets that come with the GW kits.
Bolter and Chainsword and Bells of Lost Souls both have quite comprehensive guide on what papers to use for ink or laser printers and how to treat them with sealant and what not.

The finished product should basically be comparable to what GW gives you, with the difference that - since you can't screen print at home usally - you can't use white on the transfers.

But aside from that you only need an image you like, a printer, the decal paper and some varnish to make your own decals.

Here he is, the Lord of Death himself, Mephiston.

I have been looking forward to having him arrive yet right now I am nervous as fuck to put a brush to him. I really want him to be the most badass looking model in my current army yet with his old as fuck model it seems like it will be tough.

Any advice on what colours to use to really make him stick out? Red, Gold, Black of course are gonna be the big 3. Also anything I should watch for to not fuck this up?
>>
>>52728243
I'd say you should mix the dark and light green paints and add a mid-tone around the highlights to make them less harsh, particularly on the area of the torso wit the fat stripes of light green.

Here is what I got done so far, want to get his robes and armor complete before I move onto anything else... and so far I am not feeling it. Just looking at the robes I am not sure if these are good highlights, or if I am going on the right track, should I start over? What can be done?
>>
>>52731642
Robe looks good yeah, the outer cloak shoudl halp it once you get that done

What's the plan for the chest armour though?
If its going to be red as well you might get a samey vibe going there, unless you got for a deep gore red.
>>
>>52731678
I'm not sure. Thinking maybe Korne red to start, right now it's Mephiston Red. But yeah, the panels were going to be red and the Trim I was going to lean on gold. Though maybe Black would be a better look. Though I do intend the cloak to be black with a red trim.

I'm looking to get into wargaming, specifically 40k, no prior experience in painting miniatures. I'll be starting a Tau army soon; painting some Fire Warriors and Crisis Suits. I've added everything to my cart except for brushes. I was looking at this set: http://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/brushes/element-games-kolinsky-brush-bundle and was wondering if it's any good. Would I have everything I need from this set apart from something to dry brush with? Are the brushes provided good enough for painting fine details or should I also purchase another detail brush?

If you've got the Codex for knights (check the 40kg) it shows the markings for imperium and Mechanicus aligned knight houses, as well as a couple of crests. The difference between a freeblade and a house member is that houses have a shared crest, then their honours, etc. While a freeblade has its own unique heraldry, basically to make it clear that they're on their own, as far as backup goes, for whatever reason- could be that they disowned themselves, their house was destroyed, etc. Tl;dr: personal preference, free blades are unique, knights are part of a group with similar styles.
>>
>>52733078
Just guessing but:
Prime white
Paint skin with wash of your choice
Tint skin with hue on either side of the colour wheel.
Paint flesh/guts pink, wash purple
Paint teeth bone, wash brown/yellow
Paint horns black
Paint pustules yellow, wash edge with a colour that contrasts skin
Paint weapon brown, drybrush metal

Just eyeballing it though.

Can anyone help identify what colour grey is being used for the non-armour plated parts of these models? If I want to get a similar look to this would I shade with Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil?
>>
>>52732737
I know you've posted this before, but what's that GUO model you used?

Is it a custom sculpt? Those arms look like they're from a maggoth to me.
>>
>>52734029
I would go with agrax, but nuln would work too. I can't recognize the colour, it might even be a mix.

>>52734029
This is my best guess.
>>
>>52734125
IIRC it's the maggoth with the pieces rearranged and greenstuffed together.
>>
>>52734029
Generally greys are best shaded with black rather than brown wash (so nuln rather than agrax) unless you're going for a grimy look
>>
>>52734134
>>52734219
I see, so I would use Agrax for the light blue and Nuln for the grey?
>>
>>52734243
Why would you shade blue with brown?

You need to use similar tones, Ideally just a darker shade of the original colour
If you need generalist shading then brown for warm colours, black for cold ones.

Worked on the robes a little more and am happier with them, still feels like I can enhance it some more but worried that it might be too orange. As for the chest armor, I don't know, it's really difficult to paint every muscle ridge, especially with how watered down I have my paints and I feel it may blend way too much with the robes.

Apply two or three thin layers of Averland sunset
shade the recesses with Fuegan orange
make the highlights with whatever choice of brighter yellow you feel like using, such as Yriel yellow.

Here would be my personal process of painting yellow. I chose agrax as a wash because I prefer having more contrast between the lows and highs.
>prime white
>basecoat Averland Sunset (the spray works too)
>recess wash of Agrax
>highlight with Flash Gitz Yellow, then a second extreme highlight of Dorn Yellow

Alternatively, you can try technique I found, it ends up with a paler finish than painting with Averland.
>prime with Army Painter Bone coloured primer
>recess wash of Agrax
>glaze of lamenter yellow (you may need a second if the colour is too pale)
>highlight ushabti bone
>second highlight of skull white
>>
>>52735633
It can work, but you're gonna want a bright .. blue or green for the lenses so contrast, also what colour will the armour trim be?
>>
>>52735897
Armor trim is currently Vallejo Gunmetal, should I go with something brighter for that too?

So I have an idea for customizing my marines for 30k, and was wondering if /wip/ had any experience with using these bits.

Basically, what I want to do is use the galvanic rifles from the skitarii rangers as a replacement for bolters and the plasma calivers for special weapons.
Would I be able to fit the arms already on the guns to the marine arms/bodies without any further conversion, or is greenstuff a requirement?

I won't be making a video, not got the time, but I can do a quick run down:
Base in white, yellow, pale blue or pale pink. These are the only base colours I use, it's a take on CMYK. I highlight this with white, mostly drybrush to give it texture. Then for most of them I wash with seraphim sepia, heavy in some parts and watery in others, and while that's wet I blend in other colours, mostly just guilliman blue and casandora yellow, but some variants I put in Vallejo transparent green or bloodletter glaze. Move these around until happy. When dry shade recesses with drakenhof nightshade, make sure to blend it, in some areas apply it really thin as a glaze and layer it. Highlight usually with a pale bone colour glazed on in layers. Some colours don't need much. Then the bruises are done with layers of casandora yellow and carroburg crimson, the latter needs to be glazed really as it leaves tide marks easily, the yellow can be slobbed on.
That's basically it, you just have to consider which colours to use over which base, for example the purple guys and the pink/peachy guys are painted with the same base but with different amounts of each colour over the top. Fuck formatting on my phone.

>>52732765
Thanks, they were a pain to paint!

>>52732753
Ignoring the argument, I think "lazy" is a little uncharitable. There are a lot of layers of paint on these guys, I haven't just slobbed on a wash, even the actual was is up to four colours applied at the same time. Thank you for your compliments though.

One of my D&D players wanted me to paint a mini he ordered on Heroforge. It's hard to do because the 3D printing is so grainy.
>>
>>52739802
Hmm... not sure if it's of any help at this point, but a coat of clear nail polish might help with the graininess (just using normal clear coat probably won't work - nail polish is thick, acts like a filler).
>>
question: For some reason I thought the colour of the primer has influence on how the minis look as final product. For example, I think I heard that you can create a light effect by spraying a bit of white prime on black primer from a angle.
Last week I wanted to try what happens if I use gold primer instead of my usual black primer on my blue squad. But the guys in my TT club said there would be no difference. Is that true? (I primered one in gold, ad the rest in black, but couldn't finish before my vacation, so can't compare)
>>
>>52739974
Would that be before painting it?
>>
Am I an asshole for using the kind of "glue" that is really a solvent that dissolves the top layer of plastic on GW's plastic models? And I have one model where a couple of the points aren't holding as well as I'd like. Should I use crazy glue or do something else?

These are the first minis I have ever done
>>
>>52740011
There's a bit of a difference between white and black primer. Other colors of primer are usually used as a shortcut so you don't have to do part of the base coat. Anything fancier than that is probably not worth pursuing.
>>
>>52740037
Well, yeah. If you've got some, try it on the base first, see how much it smooths things out.
>>
>>52740011
If you make the layers on top of the primer somewhat translucent, then the colour of the primer will matter.

If you make what goes on top fully opaque, then the colour of the primer won't matter.
>>
>>52740062
Thanks for the answer. No idea where I got that with the big effect.
>>
Is there any Mechanicum player here ?

>>
>>52740011
If you're just starting out, from personal experience black is harder because you need to add more layers, especially for brighter paints, which can result in thick paint jobs. Other then that i dont think I makes much of a differebce. Primer js usually a bit textured looking so it's not loke youll wabt to leave primer showing ob your final model.

If you enjoyed painting crimson fists more go with them don't paint he shoulderpad rims red though, this triggers my autism.

Not sure why you are saying yellow is so hard though. Did you prime white? Hard to tell what's going on with the bases in different colors. Cause if you prime white you can just paint like any other color or use washes and inks to get a strong yellow.

As for the paintjobs:
I think the IF need more definition. You should pick up a wash and add some shading around the panel lines. You did it on the guy on the right, but the kneepads and elbows look like they are made out of a solid piece.

The CF looks better in that regard, cause the edge highlights give the paintjob definition.
If you get more steady lines on your highlights with practice you should be able to put out pretty decent quality stuff.a

I primed the one on the right was with army painter yellow, while the left IF was brush on brown primer. >>
>>52740913
Can't advise you on the pricing, but the whole thing about being a perfectionist...
Being able to call something done and knowing when to make that call is a skill that has to be learned too.

Even if you have a relatively high standard of painting you'll be able to get something done if you set some ground rules for yourself, wether that is from a technical pov, i.e. how to paint what or from a time management one, i.e. painting so and so long every day and having x done by y.
>>
>>52740836
why?

When you crash land on the planet nearby, there are several pyramids that look a lot like the Scarif one. There are also ancient ruins that hold the Star Map pieces on Dantooine, Korriban etc that are very similar. (The Scarif pyramid is also a very generic 'Ancient Metal Pyramid' so, theres that)

Plastic is easier to work with in every way.
Easier to remove mold lines.
Easier to construct (with pewter's weight, sometimes you really have to sit and wait for glue to harden for it to take)
Easier to prime, with pewter you have to clean the model and make sure you don't handle it much prior otherwise oils can be detrimental to primer taking.
Plastic models tend to have more precise sculpts as well.

FUCK. PEWTER!
>>
>>52741630
>Plastic models tend to have more precise sculpts as well.
From about ~2010 onwards maybe. Still depends on the company though.
Anyway, metal can do undercuts and details all around the model which you can't with plastic since the tools for injection are made out of metal.

Seriously though, the only major difference in prepping is that you need a different glue.Main difference while painting is the weight, especially for big models.

It's not really that big of a deal.
Whenever I read these kind of outbursts it just makes me scratch my head.

Nice painting though.

But anon, aren't pewter models also made by injecting it into a mold? How's there a difference regarding undercuts and details? I mean, it's not like can just do an undercut while milling, unless maybe you go all-in with loads of different axises (spelling?), and even then it's a pain in the ass to do so.

t. someone who occasionally does milling on a 3 axis CAM machine
>>
>>52741837
>aren't pewter models also made by injecting it into a mold?
steel molds vs rubber molds

At least I think GW's pewter models were done on rubber molds.
>>
>>52741837
>But anon, aren't pewter models also made by injecting it into a mold?
the molds for metal models are made of rubber.
And they are not really injected, spin cast miniatures are cast in a wheel shaped rubber mold and the metal is poured into the middle from where it is pushed out into the mold due to centrifugal force.

Injection molding is done with metal molds. If you put undercuts in those molds you will simply not be able to demold the models without damaging the models.
>I mean, it's not like can just do an undercut while milling
That's another reason plastic models usually don't have undercuts. Though there are other ways you could do stuff. 3 part molds for example.
GW's baneblade tool for example has an opening where pins are inserted into the side to mold the barrels of the weapons for example.

I've seen some PVC models that were apparently done with more complex moulds that consisted of at least three parts, but they had horrible mouldlines and were a pain the ass to clean.

>>
>>52741925
Oh, okay. I mean, it's not impossible with steel molds, it's just that it would be just so much work...probably too much, if you could just do it in an easier way and have the same outcome for your tiny plastic spacemen.

>>
>>52742880
depends
traitor legions loot corpses, but it's not an absolute necessity for them, it's more something they do for fun from time to time, or if their lord has a big plan that hinges on stealing a bunch of stuff from loyalists. They all rule over a bunch of enslaved worlds and have ties with the dark mechanicum, the helforges and the chaos squats, so they have their own fairly steady supply sources and don't really need to loot stuff.

Renegade chapters, however, absolutely need to plunder everything they can from their enemies to avoid running out of stuff and often plan their attacks specifically to steal supplies. They're smaller, independent, rarely have their own empires to provide them with stuff, and are often short on equipment.

In fact, even some isolated loyalist chapters resort to plunder. Even from their own buddies.

Stupid fucking question but I'm at a loss:

I don't know what colours to paint my Imperial Guard. I've had them sitting around mostly assembled in various stages for years and haven't gotten around to painting but a few of them a long time ago.

I was going to copy the standard GW Cadian thing since I'm not very imaginative, but I've been looking at a lot of WW1 stuff and I wanted to at least get the colours the same. Good idea/bad idea? I don't know which colour combinations I should go with either. I'm thinking maybe brown and beige with brown for the uniform and beige for the webbing/armour in the early British style.

Not sure though, honestly. Thoughts? I'm literally open to any suggestions.

I didn't find the backpacks that difficult, actually. It's just edge highlighting where you can take the brush at a 45 degree angle.

On that note, however, my backpacks are the resin Crimson Fist backpacks. I'm super disappointed in them. Yeah they've got the cool Crimson Fist on the back, but that's it. The cast quality is really poor, with lots of areas that needed green stuff and serious sanding. If I hadn't worked with resin before and green stuff before, I would have been at a serious loss.

I covet the backpacks with the blank area and the skulls on them. Blood Angels denote squad markings with a design painted on the right poleyn, but I've found it useful to - as much as possible - reproduce this on the backpack. The blanks ones are great for this (shown here are Second, Third, and Fourth squads), but the skull ones also work for First (white skull on black) and Second (white skull on blue) squads as well.

>>52744783
>Huh, neat. Had no idea those were actual jets.

My brain automatically thinks of them as exhausts, too, but the two big ones at the top have always thrusters. Some of the old First Edition Bob Naismith marines, where the backpacks were actually molded in one piece with the bodies, have them pointed off at odd angles instead of straight down like every other version since.

You can see this if you look closely at the backpack that comes with the limited edition "The Imperial Space Marine" model, which is a modern re-imagining of the old LE2 model.
