>when removing dead models, do you have to keep 1" distance between models in a unit or is that just in movement

you can remove them from anywhere but during movement you have to return to coherency
>>
Would this be correct, Lord Celestant general with consummate commander placed on a second lord celestant would allow +2 hit for units if you overlapped command ability bubbles. I'm imagining retributors with blessed weapons that mortal wound and generate an extra attack on 4+.

Since Soulblight probably won't be getting an update anytime soon, I've gotten very tempted to make a list for them where I make use of the Darkling Coven units in addition to standard Soulblight units. Typical "count as" where I just replace their standard keywords with Death, Soulblight, Vampire, etc.

Vampire Lord plus Blood Knights plus vampire cultists or what have you sounds fun to me, just give them the von Carstein shields and paint them appropriately. I think it's work decently, especially since I only ever casual games with friends.
>>
>>52706670
Its comparable to a steam tank, flying and transport I think will cause them to price it at 280-300. That also lines up with a loose extrapolation based on what was on the field assuming that the preview army they used vs fec was 2000.

You mean incoming damage before the blimp's save?

>bonus points for incorporating the baseline wound regeneration of the blimp.
I'll have to improve my calculator to account for that. This gives me a good reason to.

>>52707384
It's like 1.98 wounds, same damage WORSE rend versus 1.65 wounds, same damage BETTER rend.
And the rigger pistols are way way better. They make up the combat difference and then some.
All the other guys get is mortal wounds on the retreat, which sucks, because then you are not shooting the awesome guns
>>
What the heck? Is that all to the Kharadron range?
>>
>>52707467
But they do have the higher POTENTIAL damage I guess... but the average is a better way to gauge. But, like I said, some yet unknown way to boast the hit rolls changes the game... which they probably don't have as a balancing factor, like the naked midgets, God Damn it
>>
>>52707091

I have no idea but the airships seem overly expensive for what they can do
>>
>>52707471
There's about 12 units total for them.
>>
>>52707471
What?
Four ranked units, 3 artillery/behemoths, 3 characters, and one special not enough for you? This is about par for the course for AoS factions... that aren't Storm cast or Khorne.
>>
>>52707435
Why do we get these like fucking clockwork? Is there just one moron making these posts every thread or are people really that desperate for a type of army that has the least possible impact on the setting?
And don't say "but muh Freeguild", Freeguild are either badass volunteer warriors from Azyr with a mile-long hateboner for Chaos or hardened survivors from centuries of warfare against oppressive forces. They are as far removed from mudraking yokels as possible.
>>
>>52707521
They get aether-khemist crack instead of hit bonuses. I'm assuming 20 thunderers with morters can get it and bomb you with 40 d3 shots from 36" for a whole 400 points.

>>
>>52707615
Christ... that's a unit neutered a turn. Savage.
>>
>>52707776
It's also a 500pts investment, is rend-less and still only has a 4+/3+ profile.
It's good, but not *that* amazing.
>>
Well, i just picked up a skeleton horde box

What should i get next?
>>
>>52707762
If by 'vile' you mean auto include, then yes. Yes it is. So vile every list will have two chemists, and two units of ten to twenty midget mortars. Oh what's that Death players? Scary 40 man skeleton units? PICK 'EM UP. Nice mortarch. Now they are gone.
>>
>>52707836
So on turn one, you have a good chance to "nope" a key unit from across the board. Extra cloud gold if it's a deathstar unit or key character/monster (and monsters can't get cover right? So only a 3+ at best)
That's worth 500. And it gets to keep doing that all game, because unless you box it in, it gets to retreat from combat for free to keep shooting

A keeper of secrets is 280 points and a daemon prince is 160
is it worth using the KoS if its not my general?
I can almost get 2 daemon princes for the same points cost, and I would be using the Lord of Slaanesh on mount as my general so ignore the KoS command ability.
>>
>>52707407
But are they allegiance battleline or standard battleline?
>>
Hmm, so you camp the back of the board with mortars and battleline tax then move a ship as screen up to the middle with 6 units of riggers.
>>
>>52707950
I could see them even being battle line in overlords anyways
>>
>>52707926
True enough, but you better hope your enemy has no teleports or super-high saves.
>>
>>52707868
well do you plan on actually using the mortarch? and in which case which one?

Regardless Skeletons in general are a good starting investment BUT they sold out on the GW-page so a new kit or a AoS reboxing (20man box for 23 pound instead of 10 for 15 or smth like that) is inbound.

Unless you're going full deathrattle you want to build the Knights in the box as Hexwraiths instead too. additonally the Malignants SC is a good addition if you want a Coven Throne or Mortis engine in your army

Deaths strength is high leadership Hordes and counterdeployment via summoning so you're looking for Wizards and a high model count unit of skeletons/zombies, therefore Necromancers are an auto-include of sorts.

Unless you wanna go full elite With Mortarch and Morghasts or Vampire+Dragon and bloodknights

What armies are people in your LGS playing ?
>>
>>52707868
wight king with black axe
>>
>>52707931

The KoS ability your opponent can just choose to ignore and is only better in combat if it has more than 6 wounds damage but it is a wizard but then again you could get a chaos sorcerer with a much better spell and a demon prince for only 20 more points than the KoS

The keeper is only really good if you can use its ability
>>
One thing that always bothered me about the dwarves was how they were supposedly really resistent to magic and also very defiant of wizardry, but had their own form of super-strong magic in the form of runes. I felt it was kind of awkward.

Now that they've clearly separated the duardin into fedora-tipping steampunks who don't need no gods on one side, and magic-infused rune-addicted Grimnir worshippers on the other, it makes more sense. The duardin resistance to magic (dunno if it's still part of the fluff though) can explain both why the former can resist to spells without wizardry, and why the latter need to hammer magic runes into themselves to make them fully work.

Now, if ONLY the fyreslayers didn't look like complete shit and hadn't normalized the slayer oath, it'd be great.

Hopefully the chaos duardin and the Dispossessed will get significant updates.

Or, maybe ancestor-worshippers from the realm of Death. That'd be pretty cool.

I can't see anyone taking them unless the battalions are amazing. I don't see a lot of reason to even take the transports when half the army will be balloon dudes.

Do you have to retain coherence when pilling in? I thought you had to pile in towards the closest model.
>>
>>52708825
Even the ironclad outguns them point for point while being tougher, easier to repair and being able to transport dudes.
>>
>>52708836
"A unit must be set up and finish any sort of move as a single group of models, with all models within 1" of at least one other model from their unit. If anything causes a unit to become split up during a battle, it must reform the next time that it moves."

So yes you have to maintain coherency while piling in, AND you have to end the move closer to the closest unit than you started. If you can't do one or the other of those, you have to sit still. That'd be my take on it.

And yet people keep saying AoS's lore is "getting there".
>>
I have two questions from a game I played earlier.

When setting up models in the beginning of the game, how close/far away do my units have to be from each other?

And second, what happens when models pile in and are now very close to a model not locked in combat. For example, my Brutes were a few inches away from my Gargant, but when my friend's Clanrats piled-in, they were extremely close to him, like within 1-2 inches.
>>
>>52709188
I think he's complaining more about nobody at his GW having armies that could be used in 9th. All three of those are new factions (assuming he means Ironjawz and Sylvaneth by AoS Orcs and Wood Elves).
>>
>>52709511
>When setting up models in the beginning of the game, how close/far away do my units have to be from each other?
I don't believe there's any restriction. They could be in model to model contact, giving each other battle brother hugs before running off to die.
>>
>>52709511
"Locked in combat" isn't really a thing anymore. If your Gargant was within 3" of the enemy unit, he'd be in combat, but otherwise he'd just be there like normal.
>>
>>52709553
So if they pile-in on the Brutes, the Gargant is now a part of the combat, and thus can't move away? Cause that's how we played it.
>>
>>52709511
Question 1: Within 1" of at lest one other model from their own unit.

Question 2: I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. If a model is within 3" of an enemy at any point it's locked in combat? So if the Gargant was out of range of clanrats, clanrats piled in (to a different unit) and that then put them within 3" of the Gargant, the Gargant is now in combat. (is that the situation you're trying to describe?)
>>
>>52709580

>>
>>52709846
It's not worthless because you can choose what you spend your reinforcement points on during the game as well as deep strike whatever you summoned. The first is insurance against list tailoring and monobuilds and deep striking is good for getting otherwise slow units up the board.
>>
>>52709846
Summoning isnt worthless

Alarielle turning someone into a tree, Morghur turning his own troops into Spawn, vampires turning people into more vampires/wight kings, Ring of Immortality especially. Summoning stuff/raising the dead I get, but if it's literally a gimmick ability to turn something into something else I don't think it should cost.

There are some 'set up a new X' abilities that would probably be fair if they didn't need points, but unfortunately points aren't part of the base game and are only imposed by a global special rule from the GHB. The stupidest one is the ring of immortality for death. Vamp on a zombie dragon died? That'll be 440 points to get a new one with only D3 wounds please.

Narrative play is fucking fun.

What? No they don't, they only have 1 attack each. Hurricane raptors have multiple attacks (3D6, to be exact, but they're 4+ 4+ so it balances out).

A full aetherstrike force with min size of everything but 1 raptor squad which is maxed costs 1620 points. If we assume the max size raptor squad gets to be the one shooting in the hero phase this whole formation cranks out ~35.7 shooting wounds a turn vs 4+.
3 units of 20 mortar manlets with 3 druglords costs 1500 points and averages 40 shooting wounds a turn against 4+. Happy now?
>>
>>52710046
Are you accounting for their headshot mechanic and battalions that let them fire multiple times per turn?

I quite like the idea of the Khemist and Aethercannons. Drop them from a ship behind enemy lines, and let them do their thing.

The manlets have a longer threat range than the raptors and enough firepower to delete the squad of 12 in 1 volley. They're not going to get any retaliatory strikes since they'll be the unit that died.

summoning is still good because you can keep shit off the board meaning it wont die, and then if you need to cap an objective or block someone across the board you can summon a block of plague bearers or skeles or whatever to do it.

It is very important for positioning and can win you games. 80-120 points insnt a big deal to keep in reserve
>>
>>52710657
>Kill the blimp
obviously

but the blimp delivers the terminators into melee before doing a 180 and providing supporting fire.

sometimes you kill the rhino before the marines get into position and sometimes you don't but in almost every case the marines are better off with the rhino than without one.

literally we now have 40k tactics bleeding into AOS.

Your right; I meant to say that he gives YOUR units a penalty, because they know how fucking crazy the Double King is.

But, I think the Double King's lack of movement, incentive to keep him away from blobs, and awful save make him very, very squishy. Afterall, a unit of Freeguild gunners would reliably sweep him off the table in one turn of shooting, as he should be.

A side note: A neat little interpretation of the Royal Recker rule means that theoretically, the Double King could slip around the battlefield, charging from hero to hero, so long as he comes within 8" inches of another hero after the first charge and keeps making those charges. imagine this is the Double King going all ADD, and running from shiny thing to shiny thing.

Is AoS fluff really as bad as it seems?
It seems completely unrelateable, like it's impossible to make a good back story to your guys now. Its just a big mess of endless armies fighting over nothing in particular.
>>
>>52716122
No, it's good.

pls inform me of the good stuff
i just felt sad yesterday cos i was reading about the attitudes of people in the empires towards skaven, and it seems like this kind of stuff about normal people just isnt really there in AoS
>>
>>52716122
The "nothing in particular" is there for a reason. That reason being that you can now make not only whatever fluff you want for your dudes, but your own geography too. Your guys can be from a high fortress of dragon trainers in Ghur or a swamp in Ghyran or a pig farm in Shyish. This of course comes at the cost of the established parts of the setting feeling disjointed and there being no connection between any two official maps, or an established scale to compare them.

In my opinion, though, that doesn't matter, because now there's a lot more freedom for personal fluff than the Old World had.
>>
>>52716208
ye thats p fun m8
the maps are cool too, better than the meme GW maps like the real of death map ive seen
>>
>>52716246
it does kinda make most of the battles feel meaningless to me tho, like what are they even fighting over, besides just a boring good vs evil theme
>>
>>52716222
Well for your regular dudes, you want to read City of Secrets. The first book with any real focus on them.
>>
>>52716289
>what are they even fighting over

Depends on who they are and where they're from.
>>
>>52716289
You have large swats of uncharted territories, full of barbarians, savages and monsters. Some are trying to find a place to live, some are searching for gold and treasures, some want to liberate the land from evil.

Basically you are playing in the exploration age in America instead of the middle age/renaissance in Europe.
>>
>>52716222
That's because GW focused so hard early on on establishing the rules of and trying to ground their new setting and all the new factions for it (not to mention trying to sell the new models) that they didn't have the time to focus on that.
They do have a novel that focuses on the Freeguild in that a Freeguild Guard is the protagonist. That book is City of Secrets, and as you would probably be able to tell from the title and the book's cover, Tzeentchian cultists are the bad guys.
There's also a project Josh Reynolds is apparently working on, which has this whole Ocean's Eleven-style plot about a ragtag band of humans and dwarfs tasked by Grungni with stealing some uber-powerful weapons of Khorne. I think the book is called "The Eight Lamentations".

For other good stuff, you might want to read Call of Archaon. Helps give an idea what those overdetailed knight guys in the Everchosen are.
If you're not a Chaos boy, I've heard Warbeast is apparently a "fun romp".
If you like those new huge orcs with huge armour, Fury of Gork can give you a look at their personality.
If you want to know about the plague rats or the new-fluff lizardmen, Legends of the Age of Sigmar: Skaven Pestilens is good. (Sorry about using the whole unwieldy title if that sort of thing gets on your nerves. I just want you to know exactly which book I'm talking about.)
Lastly, the Hunt for Nagash, that other audiobook series and Lord of Undeath are a good trifecta for fans of the undead.
>>

Why shouldn't they be undead?
If they are made using necromancy, they are undead.

Maybe they are made using multiple souls bound together and "distilled" into pure essence.

Maybe they are made from souls stolen from heroes traveling to Sigmar.
Nagash can do that if he wanted, maybe some powerful Necromancer can do that, in secret.

Maybe they are memories of grief of forgotten warriors, made manifest with dark rituals and bound to those armors, like a twisted version of the Seraphon (and yes, that would make them Death Daemons, which is cool).

You could have some massive Stormcast/Chaos Warriors equivalent for Death, which is awesome.

yeah, its now a shitty deepstrike, including chance summons like advancing your chaos lord and using blood tithe. Its no longer even a summoning to make an unending wave of zombies (ie what necromancy actually is), its literally just deep strike that you have to spend your casting attempts on and then you actually have to pass the casting value as well. its retarded.

The best way to approach this is to just houserule this abomination and play without it, just like everyone houserules the shitty rules of one about extra attacks etc.

This game is going down the shitter at an alarming rate to become 40k discount edition.
A lot of armies, aka not order or khorne, will need either buffs or new warscrolls to face all the shooting armies and be somewhat competitive as this is the second coming of eldar and tau...
Nurgle needs a boost and death is pretty dead, hell they could add obvious stuff like units with "ethereal" be unaffected by missile weapons.
