The wording has actually been simplified to:

While I don't believe that trample as-is produces much confusion, there are sometimes instances among new players that do: some where Deathtouch changes the "required damage needed to kill a creature". Also when a creature with Trample "becomes blocked" by a non-creature source, such as a fog variant, or when the creature that blocked no longer exists when damage needs to be assigned.
