First assault marine done.
Now that I've applied the blood and taken the photo I realised I should have done the tribal markings first. And that my bolt pistol highlights are botched as fuck. Shame the blood doesn't pop that much on the photo.

Still, another Void Brother done.

My FLGS finally got my order of a single pot of Lustrian Undergrowth in after about a year of waiting. I'm not even mad. I thought this shit was OOP. The fact it took forever is just funny to me.

>Same thread image sub-edition
Neat. This and the last thread are the only times I've seen that image used without having posted it myself. I'm happy it's getting some use.
>>
>>52690674
Yeah this one was already primed before I realised my mistake.
The others have all been filled.

On that note, I do recommend the jumpacks sold independently by GW. The molds are old, i.e some details might be a tad less sharp than on new sculpts, but honestly, 5 jumpacks for 5 pounds is pretty good, especially when you consider the lack of moldlines that they presented.

Thanks to that I'll be able to make another assault squad (albeit a more squatting one) without buying a whole kit.

>Finished painting 3 more stealthsuits
Slow but steady. What's your checklist for your current army, lads?

Aside from the stuff I have yet to convert and prime (3 more stealths, 4 turrets. shadowsun shield drone, ghostkeel, crisis commander, kroot assassin, remora drone) I have.

17/27 FWs
6/9 Stealthsuits
1/10 pathfinders
3/6 drones
Fireblade, Shadowsun, Darkstrider

Think I'll do like 4 pathfinders next in a batch.
>>
>>52690782
For my current army I still have 5 devs, 5 tacticals, 4 assaults, 1 apothecary and 1 captain before I'll deem myself able to build something else. For that army that is.
>>
>>52690816
That's not too bad, keep going! Is the colour scheme difficult? do you batch paint?

Light Grey/Orange or Dark Grey/Yellow?

The painter's colors kind of make them both look weird, even though they both look good on actual models

Where can I get some open books for a Librarian to hold? I'm repurposing Kurtha Sedd into a Librarian model, and I'd like to have the plasma pistol hand hold a book/scroll instead. I've got the hand already, but the book is eluding me. The Chaos Warshrine book looks best, but it's sold out in all bits stores *and* the model is apparently discontinued. I've been offered a few Ravenwing books, but getting a regular book from the cord-bound, bike-mounted version is likely to look pretty ugly.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>52690849
It's >>52690618, my Carcharodons. Getting an airbrush and having the priming and the grey basecoating done with it saves an immense amount of time.
After that I stop the batch painting and do it one by one otherwise I tend to rush stuff, and mose the pleasure in painting.

All right /wip/, I fucked up and I'm coming to you for advice. I wanted to do gold inlay text on a Venerable Dread on a black panel. Did the gold over-all (too much, but I figured the black would cover it and it's an extremely thin coat), then went back with Abaddon Black... And it fills in the letters. No matter how much I thin or don't thin, it runs straight into the letters and leaves the raised plate uncovered, even on the one I left without the gold at all so far. I'm working with a W&N size 1 series 7, so I don't think it's the brush that's the issue.

Please send help. This is the one I didn't touch with black yet. Worst case scenario I can prime the cover bits and glue them in over the letters separately, but I'd rather have the engravings.
>>
>>52690782
Checklist for current *models*, that I have done:
>0/1 Librarian
>0/2 Techmarine (one bike unprimed, one on foot primed and semi-based)
>2.5/10 Tacticals (interim till I do custom scouts)
>0/10 Sternguard (unassembled)
>0/5 Vanguard
>0.5/1 Venerable Dreadnought
>0/1 Deredeo Dreadnought
>0.1/1 Predator
>0/1 Lias Issodon for occasional counts-as Raptors matches
>Miscellaneous Skitarii, Tempestus, and Wraithblades to strip and either repaint or sell
Near future, once all that's done:
>6 drop pods
>Predator Infernus with plasma executioner
>Typhon
>40 Blackshield Marauders
>A whole host of other kitbashes I haven't even come across yet

>>
>>52691072
ah nice. Very sweet. With an airbrush I'd imagine you can probably do all of those guys in one sitting.

I'd consider it, seems so fucking easy. With a brush you have to be so careful in picking out details manually, doing 3+ thin coats. With an airbrush it's like "Just fucking spray", one coat gives you a perfect cover it seems.

>What's your checklist for your current army, lads?
Oh boy, let me count...

11 Scouts (5 CC/BP, 5 Sniper, 1 Heavy Bolter)
56 Tactical Marines w/ Bolter (7 Sergeants inc.)
9 Tacticals w/ Special Weapons (3 Grav/Plas/Flamer)
36 Devastators/Tactical Marine w/ Heavy Weapon (4 MM/GC/LC/HF/PC, 8 ML/HB)
2 Devastator Sergeants
12 Assault Marines (2 Sergeants, 4 Meltagunners, 6 CS/BP mooks)
5 Bikes (1 Sergeant, 2 w/ Gravgun)
1 Attack Bike
1 Land Speeder
2 Drop Pods
1 Rhino
3 Razorbacks
1 Baal Pred
2 Vindicators
1 Land Raider Redeemer
1 Stormraven
1 Cassor the Damned
2 Furioso Dreadnoughts
1 Furioso Librarian
1 Calth-temptor (Magentized; has a kitbashed Furioso Force Halberd)
2 Veterans
20 Sternguard
25 Death Company
20 Sanguinary Guard
20 Assualt Terminators
7 Tactical Terminators
2 Sanguinary Priests
1 Corbulo (proxy)
5 Librarians
1 Mephiston (proxy)
1 Captains
2 Terminator Captains
1 "Techmarine" (Tech-Priest Enginseer)
3 Chaplains (1 footslogger, 2 w/ Jump Pack)
1 Terminator Chaplain (kitbash)
1 Johnny
And a bunch of assorted Servo Skulls and Teleport Homers/Locator Beacons.
And this is just the Blood Angels. I also have some Skitarii, SoB, and Inquisition.
Most of these little lads are assembled for the most part, but are all missing a few little bitz here and there that are stopping me from priming 'em en masse. A few are primed and got a few base coats on 'em. Before I do some more work on them though I really need to get and an airbrush and some replacement hair brushes since the ones I got now have definitely seen better days. Oh well, hopefully I'll be able to get the majority of what I need to get started on all this once I get my tax return.
I'm not looking forward to drilling 200+ bolters...

Very old pic, but I still got *most* of the models in here to do.

I'm still getting some work done here and there, but I've been pretty strapped for both cash and time these past few months. I also have trouble due to medical complications, but I'm trying to get little lads done when I can. I'm still pretty new to this whole hobby so learning HOW to actually build and paint has been a challenge. I'm fairly confidant in my ability to build models, but painting is still vexing me something fierce.
Oh well, progress and improvement is all I ask, however slow it may be. I just wish it wasn't so costly and time consuming to practice.

it's more the painting for the group thing. I'm busy painting other models, so I cant chip the backlog, then given more models as compensation. Taking a break from group painting for a while.

I finished close to a company of space wolfs+ air support in a month so its not like I'm procrastinating.

Took anon's suggestion from a few threads ago about his shoulder, even though I said I wouldn't. The simpler one is definitely an improvement. >>
>>52694262
yes. it can cause some minor burns if it gets on skin. some normal dish washing gloves should be fine though, and once it starts rinsing off you can worry less. Make sure ALL of it washes off though, because if it gets left on it gets chalky on the mini and can be a hassle to get off.

Once you get done washing em in soapy water, throw em into a tub of normal water to get the last bits off.

I got four tacticals, two primed and ready to start
Four Saguinary guard.
5 terminators
And I have one custodes I'm converting into a character.
I have a pair of wings on him and a space marine helmet and he kind of looks like it could be a Saguinius conversion if I wanted it to be.

I'm adding fur cloaks, and other bits to each, ontop of just starting to paint so my process is slow.

The terminators came with a nice little transfer sheet that has some nice white runes which is what I was going to try my hand at free handing, so that's an nice little surprise. Time to learn how to add transfers as well.

Still around, don't worry; I'm at least idly watching wipg most of the day. I'm actually looking at Wargame Exclusive's book sets, even if they're *ridiculously* expensive in all their other things. Akshually, Red Tithe does indicate that the first ritual exile markings have to be earned, the Scouts that have their firsts are generally soon to be proper marines. So technically, you get your first blood way before your first exile marking.

Be gentle, it's my first time. Also I know the model itself is all fucked up, shoulder pad on the wrong side, mold lines etc. This was just a test using a friends left over model that he put together when he was a kid.

I think I used too much primer which lost me a lot of detail and I used a lot of layers fixing my mistakes which came out pretty thick but overall I'm not too displeased. The red looks much brighter in the photo, I'm actually pretty happy how that turned out considering it's the only thing I didn't copy from the How To Paint Tau pdf.

What should I work on improving first? Other than everything.

for a tabletop model, it looks fine. maybe work on a bit more colour variation, only two colours + black is a bit underwhelming. otherwise, great result for a first mini!
>>
>>52697748
For your first time it's not bad at all.
Always be careful with the amount and distance you apply the primer, also try to do it in a normal environment, humidity, etc can fuck you over.
As always thin multiple layers are better than one thick layer. Washes/inks can help bring out detail by pooling in the recesses, just be sure keep washes in the recesses, don't want drying "stains" on flat surfaces.
Practice lad, paint up a few more 1 at a time and get used to painting, eventually go on to try highlighting to bring out some depth of the model.
You can always watch some of Duncan's videos to learn new techniques and how to paint x and y

I didn't want to buy too many paints since I'm just starting out. What colours would you recommend adding?

>>52697786
There is wash on there, maybe I went a bit easy on it. And I did try my hand at highlighting but I made quite a mess so I pretty much went over it all with another layer, you can still see a bit on the helmet but the lighting in here isn't great because the sun fucked off.

>>
>>52697830
get some Leadbelcher or something, a nice metallic colour always looks good with infantry, takes away from the entirely-pastel-colours look and makes them look a bit more military. i think you can get 15 dollar sets of six basic paints for all the armies from games workshop, maybe look at those

get vallejo tinny tiny or whatever their equivalent was.

Bear with me lads, I know this ain't usual but it's Easter and I have been pondering painting this Last Supper statuette for some time. I'm not religious but my mother is and I think it'd make a nice gift. It's also one of the only possessions I have of my late grandfather. She's ok with it.

The cast quality is pretty shoddy of course and I'd need to sculpt a nose and back of the head that were chipped off two of the apostles. I'm at a loss as to the material though. She's been told it's resin and it has a smooth plastic-y texture, even when I knock on it. Think it's prime-able?

>>
>>52700266

if it really is made of resin then it should be primeable.
>>
>>52700325
Fair enough, hope you're right. Any materials that CAN'T be primed?

Also the surface of a lot of the apostles have a ton of tiny bubbles and bumps in the recesses. I'm actually thinking if it will be doable or not. all milky white covers such details well but if it's all painted then it might look ugly as fuck.
>>
>>52700266
Any strong enough primer should bite into it enough to hold, do not use spray paint, but real primer.
I imagine the only truly unprimable thing will be literal Teflon coated model, which isn't exactly common.
>>
>>52700266
If in doubt there's that pant on primer artists use...
"Gesso", it's pretty much chalk paste and school glue, practically impossible to damage anything with it.

>>52700338
>Any materials that CAN'T be primed?
Expanded Styrofoam just plain melts.
>>
>>52700266

Soak it in greaser for a few hours to take some of the oils out, if you don't have greaser give it a rub over with dish washing liquid and a toothbrush, soak it in alcohol (rubbing or vodka/gin), but not for more than a few hours.

Don't prime until it has the texture of bone, from a roast chicken, smooth with a fine matt feel.
>>
>>52700266
You might want to give it a wash first though, just to get the last bits of residue of it.
>>
>>52700008
You sure it's actually Games Workshop (or more likely Marauder)? Old O&G war machines were always onagers or ballistas. Heartbreaker would be my next bet if not; their stuff was at least in the same style.

You can often choose the "quality" level when you save from Raw image to jpg. (basicly how much its allowed to cheat with the compression, only really an issue is you want to scale back up or squeeze it REALLY hard.)
At 100% that one is 3 mb, at 80% only 700 kb

80-90% is more than enough for WIP purposes.

I've only got a size 1 series 7. Freehand, even just filling in details, is messy as hell. And filling in the black between letters would cause the same issue.

If you can suggest something like a silicone pencil in brush form (not micron pens), then that would be a lot easier. Or maybe just a silicone pencil.

Ceremite is not a single colour, it depends on the Forge World that manufactures it. if you're a pleb, just use whatever cheap brushes. If you're at a medium/high skill level and know how to use a brush, get winsor and newton, or da vinci. I know theres a few other brands as well. But the biggest thing as a beginner painter is to not spend a lot of money on brushes, you won't treat them right, and you'll just end up being overly careful with them. Gotta experiment and find out what works for you.

>>
>>52711311
That would be because they were in some funky poses in the Deathwatch sprue, so unlike the Genestealer command sprue which has all three HQ units on one tidy sprue, these models wernt given a lot of love.

They most likely want to give them ether a new reformed sprue with the same sculpts, or a brand new one, and only the other core models got brand new box love. Who know why they were left out.

slowly working on some chaos marines. Just had a thought about the feet undersides. Should I leave them the same white as the rest of the armour or do them a muddy brown colour as if they're dirty. Probably should mention it'll end up on a clear base when its done.

Awesome to see lots of nurgle around. I think I'm about the slowest painter in here and trying to sell our house is not helping but I've managed to finish one base of nurglings (bar basing) and just need to paint the horns on the other two. With these done I have my first legal 40k army, whoop whoop.

>>52712829
I'd go brown soles.
I think the main problem is that you've just done outlines with the brown wash without tidying it up. You either need to blend it out while it's wet or go back over with he white or light grey colour to soften the edges. Personally I'd just wash the whole surface and then highlight back up to white. I see people on here recommend to only wash in recesses, but that only works if you blend out the edges of the washes areas.
>>
>>52701177
I like it, but the mouth needs more highlights/ more vibrant colours to really make the whole peice be a wow factor. Either gradually blend the purple up to a vibrant fleshy pink, or get some bright green poison saliva to match his chest. Both would be my suggestions! Cool scheme overall though!
8/10 would play against

I have a pedro kantor, and some forge world IF bits here that I feel comfortable enough to paint now.

I have only primed plastic, so I want to make sure I do this right as ruining these pieces would make me sad.

Is there anything else I should do before I prime these guys? I've already washed off the film from the FW resin bits, pedro is pinned, I will probably put him "together" and prime him, so as not to get primer in the joints.

The vets' arms are magnetized, so I will put them "together" also when I prime them.
>>
>>52713783
Looking at the two bolt pistols, I see some mold lines I missed, so Ima clean that up real quick.

If anyone else sees anything let me know.

The heavy flamers are from cataphracti terminators, the black one I stole off of a ultramarine and simple-green'd it.

These are meant to be used as 30k marines, and 40k sternguard vets.

I've been drilling out bolter barrels after I prime, and planned to do that here.

Obviously I really don't know what else to do with kantor. I got him off ebay as you see here, he looks fine. I guess I will superglue the banner on?

Depends on what kind of basing you're wanting. If you're doing dirt/waste/etc, you can just layer some paste and dunk that bad boy, placing a couple stones or clumps of whatever here and there. If you want some actual cobblestone or wooden planks or temple ruin shit directly UNDER the model then yeah cutting off and rebasing is a much better choice. Keep in mind that the actual run of models has directional ridges for "facing" gameplay mechanics. Hope this helps.

My plan is:
1 Pre Mortarion legion
2 Mortarion just arrived, clean but plain DG colours ( haven't done this guy yet)
3 Dirty marine at start of the heresy.
4 grimy, covered in darker sigils and looking bitter and grim
5 proto-plague marine all green and bronze, end of heresy, small nurgle sigils
6 full on Plague Marine ( waiting for Gw on this one)

Now 7 ( being Nurgles number ) will either be a chaos spawn, daemon prince, or some kind of mk 3 and blightking conversion.

As very often, it depends. Some Chapters have them white, other have them gold, some might even have them black.
I do mine dirty gold/bronze, and I like them that way. Just do whatever floats your boat as long as it doesn't clash with the others.
>>
>>52716784
Whichever color the other bling on your marines is basically.
The important thing about the crux is not something you can see anyway.
Each one has a tiny bit of the Emperor's Armor in it, so what the packaging looks like is secondary.

And from GW's side there also never was any one color favored.
>>
Do you guys use games workshop brushes, or is there something far superior that I should look into?
>>

GW's middle of the road product, you just pay up-brand price for it.

There are higher end brushes on the market but you need to work at it to appreciate the difference, and they come with extra maintenance.

I haven't painted since I was in my mid teens and I did the Lord of the Rings magazine which came out. I'm interested in picking something up. I recently gave some Space Wolves a go (just a 4 pack of wolves) and know I'm much more interested in organic figures (as opposed to Space Marines) so obviously 40K isn't for me.

Can anyone recommend a set which is mostly organic and interesting looking (somewhat similar to this sort of thing, I suppose
>>52713743 >>52714117 >>52714773)?

Also, when you've first opened your paint pot, how long will they remain "fresh" after you've closed them up? Basically, what is the lifespan of a paint pot once opened, and do they have a shelf life beforehand?
>>
>>52716705
The vehicle drybrush is about 12mm across at the base of the bristles, the hobby one is about 5mm across and much thinner, and it's bristles are about half the length and a little softer. It really depends how much detail you're after and how smooth a drybrush effect you want, the larger brush will give you a coarser finish.

I meant to add to that middle paragraph - which also has some decent painting guides available.

Don't try to convert from metal though, that's a pain in the ass to repose. And just to be clear, my own aren't from termi legs, just standard marine ones. Really simple conversion, just cut legs off at the top, drill through, repose as you want, then sculpt in the gaps. Only needs basic sculpting skills, though it's always nice to sculpt on more details like the skull thing on the leg that's in the painted picture (hadnt sculpted that yet in the unpainted one).

The old figures may ooze of personality but fuck these proportions. I'm new at this, how do I make this less goofy? He's supposed to be a Chaos Cultist leader.
>>
>>52714067
This is really nice. Much better than my contemptor based prince. Did you buy the kit just to do this?
>>
>>52721671
Can't do much with metal sadly. You can always sculpt more on, but it's always hard to cut off, repose and anything like that. I've never managed to make any conversions look good with metal minis.
>>
>>52714067
This looks great.

I swear every conversion I've seen looks much better tha the original Guilleman.
>>
>>52721762
It's a good model, but looks a bit goofy when used as intended for some reason. It'd be a great base for many conversions if it weren't for all the imperial or ultramarine symbols, but as it is now it seems like quite a project to do something like that prince.

I think it all boils down to the arms. Look at his pistol hand, it's bigger than his damn head. Also that club should be bigger, I hope you didn't pay much for this. Lop off the arms and start sculpting new stuff on there, you'll be glad you did. Hell, if you like the pose you can find replacement bits and update the model in the process. Chaos Undivided?
>>
>>52721961
Yeah, hands are probably the main problem. Might be easy to replace if you can cut them off and drill a little for pinning. Then either sculpt over the wire if you're good, or replace with some other models hands. Looks like the pistol hand will be a problem though, as the pistol seems to connect with the body.

Anybody here into Nurgle? I'm in need of the two smaller brothers of the Glottkin, if anybody wants a big blobby Nurgle daemon for cheaper than in-store, let me know. We'll work something out.

You'll have to do so much work to make the Sisters look (dark)mechanacus that you're better off converting your own counts-as from other models. SoB are so definitely SoB that by the time you've mechanacus'd/chaosed them up you may have well have had used deldar or WHFB/AoS parts from the get-go.

I'll buy the sisters (and maybe greyfax) off of you, and/or offer bits for your conversions if you live in the US if you're interested. (Not against nonUS deals but shipping costs might be more painful for both of us)

The point is that deathguard just wear Iron armor.
If you are buying deathguard to fix their armor you might as well just buy regular mk3 that GW sells in plastic these days.

Sorry friend, if I knew anyone who did Nurgle beyond marine models, I'd be happy to help you.

Maybe post your country and/or region as well? Maybe someone will pick you up with that.

Working on a Knight that's going to eventually be all magnetized. Are those pistons in the shoulders meant to not attach at one end? Seems they'd fall out annoyingly often.

Which colours i should use for Troll skin?

Working on these guys for an escalation league sort of deal. Good fun and I'm fairly happy how they are turning out.
It's nice to paint a low-count elite army for once, not having to speed paint hordes is a breath of fresh air.

However, I am a bit stumped when it comes to this cloak. No matter what I do, the embroidery always looks like utter shit, as can be seen.
Anyone got some recommendations?
>>
>>52723195
Washes can help a lot with stuff like that
>>
>>52723254
Tried that several times (which is why the cloak looks already fairly ...thick, but it does not really work on the golden embroidery, which still looks akward after three washes.
>>
>>52723195
Personally I'd make the scrollwork white, that'd add some contrast and reduce the gold overload that's going on.
>>
>>52721936
It's main flaw is the top heavy look.
Add something between its legs and a cape and it immediately becomes much better.
It's like thr Stormcast, where one detail ruins the whole thing, in their case the helmet.

What is the base model you used? Looks awesome!

Looks like Austrian Line Infantry to me.

They look sweet. Just a standard IG army or are you doing a 30k Militia force? I'm considering using the Bolt Action plastic russian winter infantry as a base.
