Best/10
He was my first toa.
>>
>>52685531
I would say you have garbage taste for rating him above Kopaka, Gali, or Onua but if he was your first I totally get it.

That said, Kopaka was mine and I'll fight anyone who questions his superiority.
>>
>>52685860
His toa nuva form was my first. (Just too young to get the earlier sets).

Anyone know if the newest sets are worth a look?

>>
>>52685898
Honestly the MNOLG era was the best. The air of mystery and magic that they managed was unbelievable, and had a huge effect on my childhood.

I have no idea what the newest sets are like, as I stopped following Bionicle after the Toa Metru line, which was okay but a little silly, and never really managed to stand up well against what had come before.

>>52685860
Honestly I love them all. They're all so well-characterized that it's hard to pick a favorite.
>>
Green guy is best guy. He has a badass axe. Don't know/care about the names and or later toys.
>>
>>52685898
Not really.
In my opinion, they over designed them and made them far too big. They just don't have the charm of the older sets.

Well taking a look at them can't hurt, just hurry cause they're being cleaned out of stores due to the line being canned again.

This guy seems to be the most popular with fans from the Generation 2 line. Not sure if he's still available since he's a year old set.

Lhikan is best toa. He died for you sins faggots. I put aside my 2001 nostalgia and went for a real 2004 toa hero that was for some reason sold with a wild animal.

Pohatu and Onua were always lobbying for the Toa to team up.

Gali as well, but I have a sinking suspicion it partially had to do with the fact she always got BTFO'd when she was by herself.

Lewa started out as a loner but his solo track record was worse than Gali's and his tune changed after awhile.

Tahu liked working together as long as everyone acknowledged he was in charge.

Kopaka was the only one who sincerely and consistently hated teamwork. But that's because he felt the other Toa had a real bad habit of turning every team up into a pointless drum circle where the others just stood around playing with themselves or arguing. He wasn't always wrong on this either. But when people shut up and got down to business he was as reliable a teammate as you could ask for.
>>
>>52696046

That's a pretty fair assessment.

Kopaka was my favorite, mostly because he was my first and I liked his sword the best of the original six.

Guy pulled his weight, too. Holding off six rakshi at once in the comics long enough for the others to get there and turn it into a fair fight took some balls.
>>
>>52696102
Kopaka was unquestionably heroic and selfless. Probably why he was so prickly. He was there to do a job, not make friends.

what the fuck
>>
>>52700147
He's an ancient forest demon thing. His mask in particular was meant to look like a broken up piece of wood.

But yeah, part of the G2 design team's MO was spamming transparent pieces and random greebles, either sculpted or painted, all over the place hoping to sorta-kinda approximate that old Bionicle look.

I honestly can't remember the comics. Were they actually as good as a lot of /tg/ says or is that just nostalgia goggles?

Also, Gali was my first. And best.
>>
>>52701561
You might be able to find the comics online
>>
>>52701561
Hell no.

I meant that about the comics, not Gali. You are totally right about Gali.

But the comics? I guess if you want a mediocrely written, inconsistently illustrated, surface-level understanding of the ongoing story that leaves out crucial chunks of the plot and the character appearances are always dictated by what toys were available at the time, then sure, the comics are the way to go.

The comics were only good when they were allowed to tell a full story and had enough pages to do so. But that was rarely the case. Several story arcs leave you with a blurb saying "go watch the movie lol". An exception being the original 2001 comics, which don't tell you anything, they just end less than halfway into the arc because they were meant to tie into the canceled PC game.
>>
>>52684479
So if I missed the whole franchise, what do I need to read/watch/play to get the full story? Not just plot summaries.

Play: Mata Nui Online Game. The Quest for the Toa GBA game is MNOG's prequel, but it's hardly essential. MNOG II is more involved and actually feels challenging, but it's a mess. Ignore all other games, they are non canon.

Read: All the books in order, concurrently with the comics. Guidebooks are optional.

The 2001 story is messy, since the comics barely cover anything, and the book about that story only came out in 2003 and was written by a freelancer who totally ignored the MNOG. And then the 2005 encyclopedia overwrote the book's ending. And to make matters worse, the English release of the book is truncated. So you really gotta gather stuff from multiple sources and piece them together by reading the wiki.

Watch: The toy promos and character clips. The 2002 side-story was told in Flash episodes made by the MNOG's creators and they also made a bunch of 2004 animations. Their 2003 animations can be ignored. 2005 had six further webisodes that also tell a side plot. Ignore the 2006 animations, they're not canon. There's also three 2-minute CGI short films, from 2007 and 2008. The 2010 stop motion vids can be ignored.

The contents of the promo CDs (released from 2001-2004) are optional, they describe the characters and the settings, but they have nice atmosphere which was an important part of the franchise's appeal.

You can watch the four movies if you want (the first covers the second part of the 2003 story, the second and third are heavily condensed versions of the 2004-2005 arcs, and the fourth is about the second part of the 2009 story). But the novelizations are part of the book series, and the novel versions of the third and fourth movies in particular are far better than the films.

There's bonus short stories which are mostly backstory fluff or filler. Beginning from 2007, there were also web serials. One or two were fine, but they rapidly became rubbish as the writer admitted he didn't plan them ahead. Just ignore the fuck out of these.
>>
>>52702223
And that's only the G1 lore.

G2 (which you may as well ignore in its entirety) had web animations for 2015, along with a few kids' novels and a comic. 2016 had a short Netflix cartoon, and one or two further novels and I think a comic too.

I don't recommend them, G2 was a waste and was canceled halfway through, with a retarded ending that screamed "just write something and lets be done with it."
>>
>>52702017
Not just the comics he'll need the books and movie too
>>
Just for reference's sake.

biomediaproject.com/
Has the comics, games, videos, CDs, music, image archive.

cross-wired-freak.tumblr.com/post/68472919868/bionicle-chronicles-bionicle-adventures-bionicle
Has the novels, save for the last one which was a free download.

biosector01.com
Beyond being the main Bionicle wiki, it's got the serials, short stories, and some of the stuff the other links also have. It also has a link for the final novel.

I don't know what places have the graphic novel exclusive comics or the guide books. Movies can be iffy to find too.
