Varg means murderer or strangler in Old Norse, but was also used to mean any form of outlaw. It means wolf in modern Scandinavian languages due to having been used as a euphemism for the actual old word which was ulf, cognate with the English word wolf, due to folklore that if you said ulf you would summon the wolf.
