Other than being able to allegedly release pheromones to make everyone subject themselves to them, what else can an Ethereal has been canonically proven to do? Latent psychic ability? Magic? Charisma that cannot be matched? An innovative and scientific mind?
They must have something else beside perfumes and acting all important. Something that allows them to establish and reach the top of the hierachy among Tau society early on and survive.

They are decent blademasters with Aun'shi being the very best.
They train in physiology and boosting their charisma to augment their control over the Tau.
They balance the best of what the other four castes have, plus have an innate skill at leadership and organisation that lets them govern and rule effectively.

Huh. Didn't know about them being blademasters.
Then again, an Ethereal-caste fighting directly with their blade in battle must be an exceptionally rare case, considering how freaking important they are to the point where even the death of one is considered a very grave loss.

Aun'shi is so good with the sword that he fought a group of Dark Eldar to a standstill.
This unintentionally proves that fluff about Eldar agility and strength compared humans to be false since we know Tau are weaker on average than humans and poor depth perception.

Exceptions prove the rule, anon, not dispel it.
That you need to point to THE best hand to hand fighter of an entire race being able to match, not beat, but match your standard deldar means that they are indeed not so much to talk about when the best of humanity could slaughter the lot.

Have you consider they may be competent as politicians and administrators?
They can all commune with the Warp Ghost of Comrade Stalin.

Aun'shi was taken down due to being nipped by the poison dagger. He was taken to the Dark City where he became a famous fighter earning fame and titles from his Dark Eldar fans. He remained undefeated until his escape as far as we know.

>but match your standard deldar
Group.
It was a group, and I think that's a big difference.

Plus their pets.
>>52668317
Compared to SM captains, who could easily do the same?
Imperial Assassins?
Death cultists?
>>52668317
It's the power of being the protagonist!
>>52668392
We are talking unaugmented normal folks here. Base stuff.
>>52668499
Wasn't there a Tallarn Captain who dueled with an Eldar/Deldar and won?
>>52668109
Ethereals aren't normal Tau, though. They frequently fight rituals dues with their blade-staffs where they swing their weapons faster than eye can follow in perfectly coordinated patterns.
People always assume all ethereals are feeble old men because of Aun'va (who is several hundred years old), but they're actually Tau ubermench; stronger, faster, smarter, and generally all around better than regular Tau.
