Right anons I'm working on a setting and I've got some fun alien races and a bunch of other stuff I'm happy with. What I really want though is to to test this idea out on you guys
>old fashioned pulp space travel.
Everything is analog. No fancy groovy minority report screens, no fucking Apple curved white boxes. None of that.
Why?
Because unless an electronic device is heavily shielded (as in 10lbs of lead for a mobile phone) it will completely fuck the telemetry of this settings warp drives while in transit. Though the device will probably melt first.
Meaning yes the ships have AIs but no PDAs, no other technology magic. A wrench is a fucking wrench.
But it's worth it for FTL
If you're planetside you can (mostly) use technology above 1960 though a passing ship might just (if too close) fry it.
Assume the players are in the "Space police"
I really would love to see what odd things /tg/ comes up with using this premise either as little thing to add, ways of breaking it, or fun ideas because fa/tg/uys are awesome at this.
Have an adorable octopus for your troubles.
You want a houseruled Starcraft
>thanks for the octopuss, he'll go great with dinner

>starcraft
My god, it's official. I'm retarded
I mean Star Frontiers

Everything is free now

While I'm grateful, nice trips btw,
And more grateful for this >>52658234
It's more to see how /tg/ might mess around with such a setting and what they might do to it.
FTL travelers would (assuming there's significant transit time still) need analogue entertainment. Maybe there's a very widespread game that many starship crew members play and pride themselves in their skill at.
Also would they be using abacuses for quick calculations onboard? Maybe mathematically oriented idiot savants are frequently "employed" in space transportation...

Abacuses are for renfair dweebs.
Real old-school nerds use slide-rules.

True enough!

On the Analogue Entertainment front:
>Literature
Microfiche readers are practically standard equipment for warp-capable vessels, When entire novels can be scanned and stored on a piece of plastic the size of a cue card, the uses are obvious.
Also, many rocket jockeys have personal stashes of pornography that can be viewed either with a conventional reader, or a jeweler's loupe viewer that one slides the card into, then holds up to a light source.
>Music
Vinyl records are a premium luxury, being fragile (relatively) and occupying quite a large quantity of space (comparatively), if a ship has a record player, odds are very good that it is the captain's personal device, and album time is at a premium. There are several other means of enjoying soundscapes while on a prolongued warp travel: these include music boxes that read a plastic ribbon insert instead of the standard metal rotating drum, and, of course, making your own music. Personal instruments are a popular luxury for many spacefarers.
>Graphic Art
Many crew cabins could be mistaken for college dormitories: often you'll find posters of popular actors, printed pictures of family members, or cultural icons attached to the walls with simple adhesives. Some travellers bring Microfiche collections of the works of their favorite artists, others bring their own paints and dyes, and will simply scrawl on any bulkhead they find free space on. However, graffiti is still discouraged, even in the latrines.
Bump for being interesting.

All navigational duties are performed by the heavily-shielded AI, which communicates through a complex system of mirrors projecting the images from the internal monitors to the outside of the shielding. The input is handled by mechanical keyboards or voice control.
The actual controlling of the ship is handled by a large crew and involves carefully preplanned maneuvers synchronized by chronometers at the pilot station and engine room. Communications between the two are handled by a simple non-amplified semi-duplex intercom, or even a sound tube if the former is still too much for the warp drive.
A large part of the crew is there just to monitor the throngs of dials and readouts. Critical posts like the reactor are manned in triple and the watches change every hour. Skilled power plant engineers who can work your reactor like a dog without it melting are worth their weight in gold.
The pilot has a large glass window for docking maneuvers, which are slow and exhausting. There's also a glass cupola with three telescopes for astrogation. The AI will calculate your burns, but it's your job to point the ship in the right direction with these.

In theory, the main alternative is the bioengineered starship, which could be highly complex, albeit difficult to maintain.
But nobody's managed to build a thing like that. It's currently pure speculation...
