Thoughts? I'm not an experienced painter but this is definitely the best looking model I've ever done. I spent extra time on her because I played with her this weekend and she managed to, against all odds, kill Magnus in single combat.

I'm thinking I might try to add a bit to the hair, to make it pop a little more (nuln oil maybe?), and touch up the highlights on the parchment. And maybe do a bit more highlighting on the armor.

Also, do you guys have any recommendations for the inside of the cloak? I'm wary of using a wash for it because I don't want it to end up blotchy.
>>
>>52627849
That's your best looking model...? I don't ever like saying some one is a lost cause but...
>>
>>52627983
aren't you a rude little egg
>>52627849
looks fairy good, but the gold needs more depth and shade, seems a little flat. also, look up tutorials on painting white, the parchment seems a little odd.
>>
>>52627849

Looks decent anon, couple of tips.

-Put more work into that cloak, the highlights should carry all the way down to the hem, instead of clearly stopping part way down.

-Gold looks best with a highlight of silver around the edges.

-Work more contrast into the reds.

-Parchment looks unfinished.
>>
>>52627983
theres no such thing as a lost cause in a hobby like painting, unless you have a condition that gives you extremely shaky hands
>>52627849
use a small amount of wash and simply guide the brush so it doesn't look like there are blotches.

Kek I wouldn't even know where to begin with something like that. These guys arrived a lot quicker than I anticipated! Guy flat packed a few boxes to reduce shipping. Turns out the scouts box was empty barring some left overs pieces (heads, guns, a few legs). Doesn't really bother me because I really only wanted the snipers for my Gunners of Nuln warband I'm putting together. All in all I'm not complaining. Everything else is either sealed or complete. May even save the Basilisk to use at Christmas for secret Santa. Not bad for $20 dollarydoos

You've probably gone to bed now lad but in case you're still up have these. I certainly wouldn't want to assemble a miniature like that without instructions.

I had to chuck it in an imgur album because it's 7 pages long, sorry if it's a little blurry as I've only just woken up myself.

This must seem like a basic question but:
What is the real difference in Sepia, Agrax and Reikland shades?

I still see too many guides for things like bones/horns using them interchangably.
>>
>>52629924
Sepia is a dull orangish-brown.
Agrax is a very dark brown, more of a mud color.
Reikland is a very fleshy red.

They're all different hues, is the big thing. You can use all of them on bones/horns if you want to, but it'll produce slightly different effects. Reikland should be used if you want a warmer colour, Agrax for old bones and Sepia for everything else.

It's really a matter of what fits the rest of the pallette. I know using Reikland for bons on models that are suppsoed to be old and battered doesn't look quite right.
>>
>>52629970
Thanks for the reply.
I've also heard people uning Nuln to achieve more of a "gothic" look since the other 3 are very warm washes

That accurate? I'm using a ratio of 2:1 of Zombies/Skeletons in my unit comp, because not all flesh rots equally, and trying to get them looking "similar"
>>
>>52629362
Nice job so far man! I dig the sword, should be a pretty rad paint job once finished!
>>52629639
you try painting like that with a base brush m8
>>
>>52630000
Nuln would give a very desaturated look, which I guess does fit the gothic style.

If you want them to look similar, then I would suggest sticking to the same shade for all the bones regardless of what would actually make sense. A coherent army is better looking than a realistic one.

As an aside, shade dead flesh with purple. Gives it enough red to look like human flesh but keeps it cool enough to be an obvious "This thing is dead".
>>
>>52630028
I never thought of using Purple washeson flesh
Thanks so much anon - will post when painting the unit

So minor update on 30k Kharn kitbash, here's some options for shoulderpads and an alternate arm I'm seriously considering after finding it. I'm putting the fw mkIII pad on the pistol arm, it's the only mkIII pad I have free at the moment. Should I go for a pair of mkIII, go for the slimmer mkIV, the marauder one, or just go bare? And pistol arms, after throwing on the new one, I have a pretty good idea of which one looks cooler, just gonna have to fix the armor where I cut the previous hand off the B arm but still looking for suggestions. Also more head ideas are welcome, anywhere from looking like the official fw to 3rd party or kitbashes.

Man this kit has been a challenge. Mold lines and fragile as fuck parts were a headache. While I dig it overall, if I played at all, and played Vampire Lords and had to build multiple of these fuckers, I think I'd choose a different army.

I'm undecided if I'm going to put the Ghoul King or whatever on top. I kinda wouldn't mind using his head and arms for some 40k stuff and feel like the Terrorgheist looks fine without him. I'm gonna end up putting on a lot of gaps and am going to use some for a "flesh hanging" look on some spots.

What should I do with the Zombie Dragon parts?

Im new to minis and going to be properly basing my first mini hopefully tonight and have some basing grit and concrete pieces but I have a stupid question.

When using basing grit, is glueing the mini to the Base before adding the grit acceptable? To me it seems a bit easier as I can have the mini in the exact pose I need and then build the scenery around it. My issue is that it may look weird if hes not actually standing on the grit and is a bit too low down.

can't give you a guide but generally I'd say you're best of if you start with a midetone and then add a pattern with a dark and a light shade. After that adding shading with a wash of some kind should be easy enogh.
Tigerstripes and dot patterns are probably easiest to do, digital patterns are gonna drive you insane.
If you google around for some tutorials on painting actual camo for WWII games like Boltaction and the like you should find plenty of useful information.
For 40k (I assume Kommandos mean orks, right?) you can go with something more extravagant though.
If you don't want the camo to be too garish you could pick a selection of patterns and use similar colors. For example an assortment of desert camo patterns mixed together would still give them a unified look, while looking somewhat hodgepoge at the same time.

Do whatever works for you. As long as it actually works there is no correct way to do this stuff.

Glue the model down, put a layer of PVA glue + water onto the base. Dip in sand. Give another layer of PVA once the first is dry. Paint the base.

That's the classic technique any way
>>
>>52632932
Usually that's not a big deal unless you are using some really coarse grit.
If you are dealing with plastic models sandwiching a small piece of plastic card under the feet when you glue it to the base can counteract the 'sunken' look.
You can also do the bases first, but then you need to pin the model to the base, cause glue will usually not be the safest way to secure it to the base.

Hey /wip/

3 questions.
>what size brushes do I need? Do I need one of every size? How small do I go?
>how do I stop my brush bristles from going stiff after a painting session? Do I wash it in brush soap after every session?
>so far I've been using over the counter sable brushes from the art shop. Is there more specific model brushes I should get? Any recommendation on sets of brushes?
>>
>>52633064
A size 1 is your main stay brush, it does everything but dotting eyes basically.

A size 0 is for super fine detail work.

Use brush cleaner. There's a popular brand in a cream tub. Once you've done use warm water and lather it up in the pot then wash it out and point it again to dry. Also good idea to use some shampoo and conditioner once a month to give it a wash, helps keep the brush alive longer.

Any sable brush that holds it's point is good. Winsor and Newton make the best brushes but if you're just beginning don't buy their series 7. You will destroy them in no time. Stick to your art shop brushes if they're working for you then in 6-12 months time try other brands and pick up 1 series 7.
>>

Dragon dildos have been a meme since I've been on 4chan, which I'm pretty sure is over 10 years now.
>>
>>52633064
>>what size brushes do I need? Do I need one of every size? How small do I go?
You don't need one of every size. Small brushes can be useful, if you have a brush with a good tip you'll be able to paint detail regardless though. That is, if you have the brush control.
For a beginner a small brush for detail work might be more helpful.
>>how do I stop my brush bristles from going stiff after a painting session? Do I wash it in brush soap after every session?
Stiff? to some degree that is normal, at least with natural hair. It should be soft again if the hair gets wet.
If you have stiff bristles because there is paint left in the brush you didn't clean your brush properly.
Usually you don't need brushsoap if you take good care of your brushes.
That means not overloading your brushes, i.e. letting paint soak up into the ferrule. This will splay the tip of your brush if it dries there.
>>so far I've been using over the counter sable brushes from the art shop. Is there more specific model brushes I should get? Any recommendation on sets of brushes?
Sable brushes are great for the spring and the flexibility. They can last you a long time if you take good care of them.
However you can achieve good results with synthetic brushes too. These will wear out and eventually become useless, but they are cheap.
Which brush you pick is due to personal preference. If you don't mind burning through cheap brushes or you don't want to care for them synthetics are a possible alternative.

Sable brushes are universally regarded as the holy grail, but the main difference is as I said in the spring of the bristles.
If you don't take care of them properly you are wasting money on something you are not taking advantage of.

In the end it's down to personal preference.

It's a good idea to have a set of synthetics to use for washes, metallic colors and things like drybrushing and the like. You don't want to ruin natural bristles with that stuff.

Thank you for your quick response!

Awesome. I'm working with a 0 right now and wondering why painting was so tedious. I'll grab a new 1 and 0 tomorrow.

I have that one, looks like an old tobacco tin but in plastic cream. I'll have to go find it among my junk. Oh shampoo and conditioner? Didn't know that thank you.

Awesome. Not sure where I'm gonna get a Windsor and Newton being in Australia as all googling shows UK.

Last question. What do you use as a pallet? I see Duncan spreads it onto something white, mixes a little water and paints. I've been doing that so far using a cut of foamcore but it seems to dry up, maybe being absorbed by the paper. Is a plastic pallet a better idea?

So, I just bought a Chaos Rhino and some CSM, so I can cut them up and use as scenery for the Imperial Knight I'm building.
He will crush the Rhino under his foot, the roof of it pushed in, maybe at the position of the Rhinos stormbolter, with the gunner stuck under the Knights foot. Probably some CSM lying around. To make this work out a bit better, I'd use lots and lots of modeling clay to give the impression of a muddy battlefield, where both have sunk into the mud.

What are the chances of me fucking completely up and wasting quite some money on a sort-of diorama that won't really work out?

I've seen marines and tau battlesuits painted with SENMM, which looked good.

Lizardmen macuahuitl are generally more club-like than obsidian-sword. The power macuahuitl can be easily made from three layers of thin plasticard, the blades being the middle layer. From there it's thin greenstuff squiggles and attaching it to the powersword housing of a normal blade.

There's no real way of getting around learning to sculpt for the jaguar hides, but you can use oyumaru to at least recast the heads instead of resculpting them every time.

Hey I plan on doing up a Chaplain Dreadnought as a part of my Blood Angels collection. Just trying to figure out how to kit it. Left arm is close combat, for sure, but I'm deciding between multi-melta, inferno cannon or assault cannon for the right arm. Will probably never see the tabletop (I don't think BA can even field them legally) so I'm prioritizing flavor and aesthetics here. Recommendations?

seems most fluffy I for a chaplain I think. Purge the unclean and all that.
Next best thing would be an assault cannon. Cause it's simple like a croxius.

I could see a melta too for the punch it packs, but microwaving stuff is probably not as satisfying as burning it, when you are a religious fanatic.

Don't know the BA codex, but seismic hammers are a thing now right? Can a BA take one or is that something reserved for Ironclads and the like?
Anyway a Dread sized crozious could definitely pass as one.

What is it with 3rd parties and making kits that contain a vast variety of different style bits in one? If there's a helmet I really like, it's bundled with 4-9 helmets I don't like. Why can't they sell those helmets individually or in batched of a certain style per? Some companies do, but not enough.

I feel your pain, I'll make the other legs work since I'm doing chaos and cobbled together weird armor is fine by me but the ones I used on Kharn are definitely my favorite of the three.

I imagine you might be able to contact them and make a request, might work out. The leg pairs were cast individually rather than all together so they might be able to do it. Heads are usually all on one frame so those would be less likely. It's probably an issue about fulfilling custom orders, especially if the process to make stuff leaves them with leftovers that may go to waste.

>>52642168
As it looks now, you seem to have only basecoated it 2 colors. So it's a but hard to critique . However,

1) it looks like you didn't prime or used a grey primer. Regardless I can see grey through the basecoat on the leg, in the recesses of the eyes and other areas

2)the basecoat is uneven, thick in some areas and too thin in others. Try applying each color after thinning with water in 2-3 smooth thin coats

3) neaten up the area between colors, silver and gold should touch but not spill onto the other or leave parts unpainted. This is just brush control and gained through practice

4) Some parts that are silver or gold on the box art are unpainted in your picture. If you plan on painting them metal do so now.

5) apply a wash to the parts you've painted. If using gw colors I recommend nuln oil for silver and agrax for gold

It's your first model so there is nothing wrong with it inherently, just go back and take your time to be neat and thorough. I recommend watching Duncan's tutorials on warhammer tv, the long ones are much more informative than the daily tips

Why doesn't GW have a dark blue spray? The closest thing they have is Macragge, which is too light.

Also, wtf color is Incubi Darkness? It just looks black to me.

>>
>>52629544

Looks really good anon. The IW is perfect, you added tones of brown to the metal shade, and got great eyes, great stripes and great weathering. You made a otherwise "boring" pain scheme look interesting.
The undead are also good, but I feel the skeleton totally outshines the ghoul. Its just got so much character, and is splendidly painted. The ghoul is ok, but shrinks in quality next to these guys.
>>
>>52643383
The silver on the gun is from the flash and the bronze on the eye was a happy accident as I made the eye piece bronze and now it kinda pops. Making the center blue.

Making a theme for a Skitarii/Cult Mech army with an Inquisitor. What do you think of an Admech task force in an Infinity looking hive city? Thinking of making onagers look more like tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell. Also thinking of more Enforcer looking full face visor skitarii. These wouldn't be from another Forge World, perhaps the host of its own with an upper class hive city being attacked or annexed. Open to suggestions

>>
>>52643984
Line painting the helmet crest would make it look much better.
>>
>>52635746
What stuff you have? If youre using some liquid water effect then yes the framing is necesary, but you could use water texture gel by vallejo which is just a slap on and let it dry. Id suggest the first one tho.
>>
>>52643944
If it's led by an inquisitor I'd recommend having the overall color scheme be black.
>>
>>52644031
It's led by a Dominus from Cult Mech. Not sure how I'd do him, I don't like the official old man pimp model so it'd likely be almost scratch built. The Inquisitor is technically just a representative so I think the Skitarii would be almost like a military police with more of a "face" than normal war born mech. Never been a fan of the metal Star Fox feet either so they'll definitely get a swap.
>>
>>52644017

Yea I tried but totally fucking botched it. Going to try and go back over it when I return to finish off highlighting the black parts.

My army will be mostly skeletons so I'm happy people like the scheme.

Might have to darken the shading on the ghoul to make it stand out a bit, but then I kind of like the smoothness of the skin next to the high contrast look of my skeletons.

Painboy has a couple for fingers without the plunger part, 1/35th military stuff might have some but they'd be the most brittle things on the planet if they do, there's a medic arm from the scion box, I'm guessing dark eldar has needles somewhere but I'm unfamiliar with them, space marine apothecaries have needle things too. It'll likely take you chopping stuff apart and gluing it back together if you don't build them yourself from scratch. It's just so tiny, the needle would be unreasonably small if you stuck to scale and the plunger would be super breakable as well if you went for the the same style as in your picture. That's a tough one man, good luck.

Considering I'm making my Tau theme to be ambush-based in a jungle/swamp, would it make sense to have the crisis commander (whose meant to be a bodyguard for shadowsun while he gets her stealthfield) posed like Jehuty?

I can't think of a suitably badass pose and I love hiding little references to things I love in my minis.

>>
>>52648533
It's one of my fears, yeah. He'll have most of the gun options magnetised on his arms but airburst and missile pods will be shoulder-mounted. I want a pose that looks good with either setup (like having him points both arms would look stupid without actual guns..). That and the pose preferably fits with the aesthetic of a sneaky git.

The colours are all roughly where they should be and you're highlights aren't that bad.
It looks like you had a bit of an accident priming them though, the models should not look that lumpy.

Sa'acea (I believe is the name) sounds like your type of color scheme. Go for a dark bluegrey basecolor with lighter grey accents and black clothing to give a dark urban feel. To achieve this is probably base the clothing abandon black, the armor Russ grey and the accent pieces (parts of the gun, helmet stripes, etc) would be either administration grey or Celeste grey.

As far as basing goes that's actually very easy. First get your hands on some cork (you can buy this at any arts and crafts store for no more than 10$), gw technical paint called astrograntie, a drybrush, and the following paints.

Typhus corrosion
Ryza rust
Mechanicus standard, dawnsrone and administratum grey
Agrax earthshade

Also the astrogranite all over the base and let dry. Take excess sprue and cut sections of rebar and pipe from it. Prime sprue black and heavy drybrush ryza rust. Wash 2x with heavy agrax shade. Tear cork into chunks to represent rubble. Use shitty brush to paint pva (white) glue over cork to seal. Prime black or grey. Super heavy drybrush of mechanicus standard grey. Medium drybrush dawnstone. Light wash agrax. Light drybrush administratum. Place cork on base and fit rebar into scene to make it thematic. Glue everything down. Light drybrush of ryza rust around rebar. Shade with agrax only over ryza rust. Easy urban base.

For bonus points add a brighter accent color to make everything pop, things like yellow road stripes, green puddles of poison or shell casings can really break things up

He was primes with citadel chaos black, I know not a real primer but it's never been an issue before.

I carried him home since it was walking distance. He chipped from being in my hand/ jacket pocket for a half hour

Thanks for the paint recipe, dude. Im gonna make some Mark III marines in that color. Thanks again, Your stuff looks great!
>>
>>52650412
either your hands are made of stone or you had shit in your pocket. Of course it's going to fuck up the paint that way.

Cheers, can't wait to see how they turn out.

>paint STILL doesn't want to come off
What else can I do at this point? To remove anything I have to scrub hard enough that I'll scratch the metal.
>>

leave it in for longer
>>

I might be too retarded for dry brushing.

It's supposed to be super easy but I've never been able to do it correctly while following various tutorials.
>>
>>52651386
Hate to say it, but you might be right; what goes wrong exactly? If too much paint on brush, scrub more on towel until removed.

Here's an update in my Salamanders. I am very happy how they turned out so far (it's my first box).
Btw, I gave them red weapons because i felt like there is already enough black on the modell.

There is still a lot of shit to do, but it is getting there.

New thread when?
>>
>>52650316
Really good looking! Shame nobody else commented on it.

Style's very simple and muted, not flashy at all, but you clearly have a lot of skill and brush control.

On future models I'd maybe add even more hazard stripes to mix things up a bit. Put some on legs or arms, etc. Also maybe do a bit less dirt/chipping in favor of more scars/scratches on the metal. Like on the Dread: bit less dirt on the hazard lines, bit more scratches on the arm.

Hey guys does anyone have a guide on how to paint red/ginger hair?
>>

The point, you fucking mongoloid, is that being overly critical/rude to someone who is learning to paint and taking steps to better themselves is a dick move, you cunt.

Nuln Oil or Agrax on Usbanti bone?
I don't want a warm tone, and i'll be using the skellies in the same unit with zombies

Help
>>
>>52651785
but anon, with such a dark green and red weapons they basically look like dark angels!
>>
>>52652466
Nuln oil is black and agrax brown.
Your only choice here is basically nuln oil
If you don't want a warm tone it would make more sense to use a different base color (a grey an ice blue maybe) or a blue wash for example.
>>
>>52652466
Nuln gives a grimy look if you use enough. Great for skellies and zombies

Water down your washes and only apply shadows
>>
>>52653105
You can water down washes ?
Fucking hell, im a complete moron to painting
>>
>>52653165
Yeah it gets rid of the shiny effect on them. Don't apply it liberally onto skin. Also don't apply it to the entire model, you get an unsightly monochrome effect
