A French shield wall basically made the English self-bow irrelevant at Poitiers. Still, longbows were really effective so long as you have a commander who can clearly tell if the archers are being ineffective.

Still, the French cavalry being shot to pieces by peasant longbowmen is a testament to the exact power.

One-on-one fight, I'd put money on a mounted archer using a composite bow because the self-bow takes a lot of focus and skill to get a perfect shot on, all the while the horseman can gallop in closer, circle around while the archer's aiming, and close-in for a clean kill from a short distance.

A selfbow's biggest advantage is being fired from a volley.
