The cavern is collapsing and rubble is falling on the important NPC and the magical item: which do you save, hero?
>>
So none of my group have seen the walking dead or read the comics. I chose the group of bandit antagonists they're facing to be similar to the saviours, their leader of course being based on Negan. They fell for a similar "trap" to Rick and co. with attacking bandit outposts and thinking they could kill them all. Right about now they're due a line up and someone is going to die - the players know any of them can die at any moment. We made that clear from the get go. Any tips on executing this?

Rolled 6, 6, 2, 6, 4, 4, 2, 5, 1, 6, 3, 6, 1, 2, 1, 1, 4, 6 = 66 (18d6)

Right, rolling up my character for tomorrows session. Give me strength senpai. Stats in order, rolling a cleric

Basically, Rick meets another group of survivors called Hilltop. They explain that the Saviours and Negan bully them, they take half of their stuff or they get killed.Rick volunteers to kill the Saviours for them in exchange for setting up trade between the two communites. Rick and his people kill a whole bunch of saviours and think it's problem solved. Only later when they travelling to hilltop do they find themselves ambushed, and realise that there are far more saviours than they thought.

Enter Negan:

Have you ever put your party in a position where one of them has to die through the hands of another party member?

Like a situation in which someone HAS to be sacrificed or otherwise everyone will die.

No but it sounds like good bants and I know exactly what my group would do.

Unless they have an NPC follower that's been palling around with them, you can't really pull this off.

As cool as your players say they are, killing a character who has no autonomy over the circumstances of their death is not fun, and they won't like it.

They know they can die any moment, but they can control the circumstances and try to avoid death. Just getting your head smashed in helplessly is not fun.
>>
What's the best class for mini-campaign (4-5 session long) that around level 5-8?

>>

>>

Especially when I've dove back into the older books for monsters and the like.
>>
>>52614873
Probably Paladin, Fighter or Barb for a nice mix of tankiness and sweet, sweet damage.
>>
>>52614872
I mean, they did have control of the situation. They got ahead of themselves and started killing folk without doing recon. That's their bad.
>>
>>52614736
I dig how thematic they can get. You get a real idea of the way to play a creature as a DM from them.
>>
>>52614895
Seeing as how the bloodhunter is made by matt mercer ill give you a pass
>>
>>52614929
Sure, but unlike in Walking Dead where they're helplessly lined up, PCs will try fucking everything to get out the situation.

Break out of prison, bolt quickly and head for cover, swarm Not-Neegan and beat him to death with action economy. Seduce Neegan with a great Charisma check. Or pulling some other totally weird bullshit idea that works out of no where that you can't prepare for because they're fucking PCs.

The only way to stop that and have the gravitas of that scene you want, is to railroad them into it, and that is not fun.
>>
>>52614907
They do, they have a little Chinese monk lady they met two sessions ago. She'll be with them when it happens.
>>
Do you let players detect traps and hidden items and so on with passive perception?
>>
>>52614736
>>52614914
>>52614930
They seem very slanted towards combat only information though, which is somewhat disappointing.
>>
>>52614969
Admittedly, yes; which is why I loved looking through the 5th Edition Foes book, with their ecology sections; it's helped me think better on my feet for new things.
>>
>>52614967
YES.
If you don't, do your games progress one square at a time while each square is someone rolling to check for traps?

Shit, if you're going to be checking for traps while walking down this hallway, damn right, that's what passive checks are for.

are
TRAHSH!
>>
>>52614961
I'm more than happy for them to take whatever approach they like. I'm not going to have them surrounded by 100 guys or anything ridiculous.

It'd be a tough fight but if they want to fight that's what they can do.

>>52614929
That's what I think. If they'd taken a smarter approach things might be different. None of the bandits were unreasonable and none of them attacked first.

These guys are good players, I've been running with them for a few years now. I know what they're like and I've done worse to them before and they laughed it off.
>>
>>52614977
Monks are fast and do a lot of damage and are aesthetic as hell. Plus Open Palm has the only save or die in the game and Shadow Path has the best movement ability in the game. How are they trash, exactly?
>>
>>52614969
>>52614974
I admit the ecologies were useless half the time, but the other half they were fucking great.

I think some thematic out of combat abilities or powers would be nice in the statblocks instead of in the accompanying text.

That said, some of the accompanying text is pretty great too.

Do your players try to play it smart, or are they the type that charges right at the enemy and hopes they can take them?

My group is strategic as fuck and never plays it straight. This probably has something to do with most having past experience with OSR style D&D where just charging in and wailing on the enemy is going to fucking kill you. Anyhow, they don't fight fair. Not fair at all. They've become more like a group of elite commandos that strike with surgical precision at the enemy leadership and vanish into the night before anyone can react. Before entering any combat (except ambushes where they can't really decide), they will make absolutely sure that the odds are in their favor, in every conceivable way. And since they obviously like that, I've started to change the game to be more like that as well. Impossible odds that *have* to be evened out to even stand a chance. Of course, it makes the actual fights less exciting when they've already weakened the enemy in every way possible, but I guess easy fights is what they're after, and what they work for.

How about everyone else's groups? Do you go all commando or do you just charge in?
>>
>>52615288
I have one group that has absolutely no idea what on earth they're doing at any given time and basically just bullshits their way through everything, surviving by the skin of their teeth, usually through dumb luck.

My other group is a healthy mix: they're smart and cautious but still enjoy leaping in head on every once in a while, usually spurred on by the barbarian.

This meant 3 6s anywhere would allow 18 in a stat. And you could dumb all your highest rolls in 2 stats, but have to deal with shit like 5s for your lowest score.

It was actually pretty cool. It gave a lot of options before we even got past rolling, something point buy doesn't.

I DM games for a group of girls. These girls are literally normal women who are just a bit nerdy, they are not autistic neckbeards like most on /tg/.

I'm pretty normie too. But I come on /tg/ because I like to read on what to do for my next plots, and /tg/ offers some decent information if you just lurk.

Story time.

>Be me
>Bored with friends
>Suggest playing D&D
>Friends are up for it, but they don't know how to play
>Friends are girls, so they have no fucking clue how to do anything.
>They don't even play vidya
>I'm not experienced at being a DM, have only ever been a player, but I decide to give it a shot.
>Tell them I'll write up a plot.
>The next day I'm excited and help them make their characters
>They choose joke names instead of serious roleplaying names
>One Dark Elf is named Blue Gummy Bear Tits
>Days pass
>Forget that I'm supposed to do the plot on Saturday
>It's Friday, I realize my mistake
>Have no idea what I'm going to do
>Decide to rip-off the entire Morrowind plotline.
>Replace any recognizable names with more obscure names so they can't ever google my plot and spot my plagarism.
>Morrowind becomes Resdayn
>Dunmer become Drow
>Tamriel is never mentioned, I always say "Nirn"
>Ask my brother to tag along, since he has D&D experience.
>His job is to create an exciting roleplaying enviornment
>Little did I know how abrasive things would become thanks to him.

Should I continue?

I'm glad the ph devotes a full page to explaining that characters can defy the traditional Western patriarchal norms of gender, and encourages me to think about how my character might transgress the boundaries of cisnormative stereotypes.

I mean, they could have just said, "Pick a sex for your character: male or female (none or other might be appropriate choices as well)."
>>

It's actually MORE damaging than a smite. 1st level smites to 2d8, each level above does an extra 1d8. Moon bow is just 2d8 per level.

Good bond for a former slave turned misanthropic fighter? He's a Zhent so he's not going to betray the party, as long as he gets paid. Something like "I am only happy in combat" sounds too edgy.

Holy fuck. I actually thought it was just a ranged smite on a class with faster progression and more slots, on a SR timer.

That was already super good, and trample on Paladins and their smites mechanic. But it is not even just that. It actually scales better.

Like, what. Why. I can't

If You want to buff it further, you are legitimately an idiot. Unless the rest of the party are super strong somehow, this will make a Warlock outshine anyone else by a large margin, and buffing it further.. . God DAMN man.

We played5th Edition because it didn't look like absolute cancer to me, and also because it seemed pretty simple. While Pathfinder looks more in-depth and immersive, I just was too lazy for it. I'm a spontaneous last-minute kind of guy anyway.

Either way, I'll give you a rundown of the players, but I'll only use their character names.

>Eira is a short nerdy anime chick who wears glasses
>She named her character Eira so I decided to make her the Nerevarine, just because she didn't choose a joke name
>She also chose to be a Sorcerer, so it makes sense, and her natural magical abilities can easily fit in with the Nerevarine plotline.
>Eira's best friend, was Rogue named Blue Gummy Bear Tits
>Because of her name I decided to address her by her full name during the whole plot
>"You can't do that Blue Gummy Bear Tits"
>"You are under attack Blue Gummy Bear Tits"
>"It's your roll Blue Gummy Bear tits"
>You get the gist
>My brother is there with me, his character is called Rothus, and he's a Fighter who has devotion to the not-dunmer temple
>Invader Waffles was a Rogue Gnome, but unfortunately she got called for work that night unexpectedly
>It's just Eira, Blue Gummy Bear Tits, Rothus, and a filler character I played as DM.
>I open up the game with a dramatic description of the sea
>I give Eira a secret note-card, describing the dream Azura gives you at the beginning of Morrowind
>Blue Gummy Bear Tits wakes Eira up.
>I have the shirtless Dark Elf standing, who explains that he overheard the guards say they'll probably let them go.

>At this point, Eira and Blue Gummy Bear Tits characters get into an argument and begin hitting each other with fish.

>>52615592
I also agree the Smites need to be nerfed because it steps on the Paladin's toes but it is importent to remember at level 9 the Paladin has 25d8 worth of slots per Long Rest (Plus the Undead/Fiend boost) and the Warlock has 10d8 per Short Rest and gives up their large damage boost from Hex. Warlock has to do 5d8 per hit as well, they can't split it on weaker things.

Also once out of slots the Paladin does 4d6+10+GWM damage whereas the Warlock will do 2d10+10. Assuming everyone here's optimised of course.

I don't know what Warlock should replace it with on the Pact Weapons, but smite should be removed because it's copying abilities not because it's OP.

Oh I forgot to describe Blue Gummy Bear Tits

She's a short blonde chick with curly hair and she yells loudly whenever she doesn't get her way. But she's mostly cute and harmless

Anyway

>Eira and Blue keep having a fish slap fight for the next few minutes
>After we're done cracking up about it, I have an Imperial Guard approach them
>"This is where they want you, get up on deck and keep this as civilized a possible"
>Eira and Blue start planning their escape
>They don't trust that the Guards are going to let them go
>After I hint that following the guards is their best option, they cooperate
>They go through all of the paperwork
>Instead of being told to go to Caius Cosades though, they are informed that they will be working under the supervision of the Temple, with Imperial oversight.
>They walk out of the census office, and they notice a magic ring on the ground
>Eira picks it up and pockets it
>Blue and Eira have a quick argument about who gets it, but Eira keeps it
>Enter Fargoth.
>I speak in an extremely nasally voice, and hunch over, looking at them like I'm the hunchback from the 300
>"Excuse me, have you seen my ring? I'm afraid I lost it"
>Blue Gummy Bear steps up and talks to Fargoth first
>She asks how much he's willing to pay for it
>"I...I can give you a discount at Auriels tradehouse" I say, crossing my eyes like a retard, at which point everyone in the room burst out laughing
>Blue and Eira decide to keep the ring, but they don't want to go to the Temple yet like the Imperials told them to.

>They proceed to buy some potions and food from Auriel
>Overhear a human at the bar complaining about Fargoth

>At this point, Blue's eyes lit up and she looked very smug.
>Blue and Eira go and ask the human about Fargoth
>"That damn wood elf owes me money"
>Blue asks if he knows where the money is
>"Damned if I know, I searched his house, so he's hiding it somewhere else. He hides it at night, I'm sure of it."

>At this point, Blue and Eira tell the Nord that he's on his own and decide to go back to Fargoth

It's worth mentioning that at this point, I had expected them to either wait for night, or go to the temple. What they did next was unexpected and forced me to improvise.

>Blue finds Fargoth and asks him if he owes money to a human.
>Fargoth confesses in his nasally voice. "Y-Yes it's true, I don't even owe him anything, he's an extortionist!"
>Blue smiles smugly again, and says quietly and deliberately. "I think he has your ring"

At this point I was even impressed at her ingenuity.

>Fargoth replies "H-He has what?"
>Blue says again "He has your ring, I saw him wearing it."
>"B-But that's MY ring, he stole it! He stole it!" Fargoth exclaims.
>"Maybe we can help you to get it back?" Eira chimes in.

Int 4 can be fun.

We rolled for stats once, and I made a Gnome Monk who was raised by wolves. Literally. Couldn't talk with int4 and fought using fists/nails, and was basically just the pet of the party. She could talk to the animals, at least fhe wolves, but only the Warlock had some shenanigans to actually communicate properly with her.

The druid also rules to "speak to animals" allowed it, but in all cases, it was pretty difficult to make any thoughts coherent.

She got better when the GM let the Druid cast Awaken on her.

Wasting 1 minute (or 5 minute) at the end of each combat? "I change into my comfy cloth after combat! And wait! I need to get into my good armor first!" is a bit too autistic and will get old fast to your party. Especially for only 1 AC..

>>
>>52616929

>>
>>52616929
I'm running a 1-on-1 campaign right now. I can't help you with solo though, since the PC has followers. I would recommend it, since having just one character in there is going to make combat hard to balance.

If you're worried that having NPCs helping might steal the player's thunder, make them a couple of levels lower.
>>
>>52616929
If you have the DMG, you can find the XP allowances per character in there. You should probably keep away from enemies that can just shut characters down with stuns or whatever, because then he'll more or less die instantly.
>>
>>52616929
It is fine honestly.
>What's the best character to have if you're travelling solo?
Literally anything, because you design encounters based on thr class.

Rogue? Sneaky thievery shit
Paladin? Give them dudes to order around or make him a guard of some squishy cleric
Fighter? Mercenary who is hired for tasks with different groups. Or maybe a gladiator who runs around and 1v1s faggots
Once we hit spell casters, it becomes even easier.

I once played a 1 man party with a Bard. I was actually traveling with the heroes to see their great deeds, and handling a lot of shit around them they forgot about. Things like politics and public image. It was super fun playing a hero maker kind of campaign, where I was pretty much the manager of a team of NPCs.

So to the DMs here, has anyone retired a campaign setting? Not because of it didn't work out or anything negative like that but because of just simply ending a campaign story with your group that last years.

My group has reached the 7th year of our campaign and the story has come to a point where this is the final ride for them all (the usual, something about angry god, a demon, an end of the world and them saving it with loot at the end.) I have to admit, it's all good and exciting and my players are looking forward to bring closure to a story (on the side, we have a secondary campaign running at its 2nd month so it's not like we're gonna stop DnD soon) but I have to admit, behind the screen, I'm kinda getting anxiety over leaving the world we've all created together. I've grown attached to the NPCs, the cities and the home areas my players have made for themselves. I know to end it when it's all good but I can't help it, these characters we all played and interacted as a group has been with us since high school and now we're all working adults so there's that melancholic thing to it.

So yeah, to players and DMs, how did you feel about ending campaigns with your table? Was it just a "whatever, onto the next one!" or were there emotions running on your end?
>>
Why is /5eg/ and just the 5e community in general always so angry?
>>
>>52617317
Because it's volatile. The game is still being built every day, every week, every month, with new stuff being made and old stuff being fixed, all while people are afraid of the boogeyman known as "3.5" or "3.PF," saying shit like "WotC is going to make this game into another 3.5."

And to top it off, as the game gets bigger with more stuff added to it, it pushes idiots who can only work with the simplified stuff out more, so they get angry whenever new classes change the balance beyond what they can comprehend.

I love it.

There is something super satisfying about finishing this long story.

We often do small revisits, play in the same world, and have these legendary people pop up.

We had a campaign where the bard decided that she was done being a public figure (she had almost been assassinated 4 times.), so she retired herself as a maid of some Lord she kind of admired, and who was a decent wizard (level 7 only, compared to the level 20 Bard.) It was a quiet life, which was fitting after what they had done.

Much later, a new party was making trouble in the same country, and had accidentally lured 2 "powerful" warlock to this lords place. The old bard player was the only person other than me (GM) who knew this was where her Bard has retired to.

The Lord looked a bit at these two warlocks, and the party anxiously hoped he would help them (they were pretty much TPKd otherwise), as the Lord just shrugged and told them his maid would deal with them.

It was pretty hilarious letting the old Bard player just curbstomp 2 level 6 warlocks as a level 20 Bard with a lot of her super magical gear still on her possession.

Additionally, do what video games do. PC is the hero and he gets a pool of NPC party members. Your PC can create them for you and you run them on non-combat situations and make the last call on their backstories, character, etc. and the PC controls them in battle and also have a say in the NPC's ability checks.

My 1-on-1 is going well with this setup. I've set up like around 5-6 NPCs he can meet and ask to join his cause. The setting is an empire and he starts in the rundown parts of the city where crime is rampart. He joined up with a rogue he met and they've been going about the lower city doing shit and meeting more possible party members. There are times NPCs I've made on the fly even end up being party members as well cause my PC likes them and I just roll up numbers fit for an adventurer.

Yes. And here's how you pull it off.
>Start off with small cons using major and minor illusions, prestidigitation, disguise self etc.
>Use major illusion to produce an orphan, make him as pitiful as possible.
>Disguise yourself, or just dress up in fancy clothes if you have them, look like a haughty orphanmaster.
>Beat the fake child in public, really make him cry out in terror.
>Some goody two shoes will come along and demand you stop, probably a paladin or a cleric or whatever, best if you do this somewhere they're likely to be.
>Offer to sell the child to them for a measly hundred gold, otherwise they can fuck off and I will keep beating the child if I wish
>They hand over the gold, set the child free (probably from the chain around his neck or whatever, or a rope, who cares.
>If you're a high level Illusion sorcerer, make the child real so they won't put their hand through him.
>They walk away with the child, you need to run as fast as you can at this point.
>Dispel the spell, change out of your disguise into a different one, repeat.
>When you have enough money open a strip club full of illusory babes.

Does anyone have any good homebrew ideas that put mithril/adamantine weapons a step above normal weapons but still below +1 magic weapons?

I was thinking of making all Mithril weapons light and finesse. Also making Adamantine weapons indestructible and crit on 19s. Except I have a champion fighter in my group and I'd rather not introduce weapons that makes his archetype choice suck. Unless I make them crit on 18s for him.

>Evil Lord has an open audience in his castle.

>he has 4 swords, 4 daggers, a sling with a bag of pellets, and 20 throwing knives, a whip and a quarter staff strapped to him.
>after he finally dropped it all, they try to subdue him
>He kicks their ass, because the weapons are for just for show.
The monk had some issues with being severely underestimated for the first 6 levels, so he started running around with an entire arsenal at all times, just to seem more intimidating. It works, especially when someone thinks disarming him will actually make him less effective in combat.

Guys, if the sorcerer can switch his spells when he gains a level, can a wizard do the same with his cantrips?

Make them a +1/2
Mithril makes them +1 to hit
Adamantine makes them +1 to damage

Also remember that, while +1 is technically +1 to hit and damage, it almost always comes with additional effects.

Make it indestructible, but not better crit, and especially not finesse. That's actually insane. I might allow that on a +4 item, but making a two handed weapon like a Greatsword or Mail "Finesse" is a massive fuck you to strength characters.

well, my party is wandering through the heart of a great forest foolishly.

Ask yourself:

>Where is the adventure going to be set?
>What creatures roam these kind of lands?
>What non-combat encounter can I throw in?
>Should I change the encounter depending on time of day?

Look at your adventuring area, are you in a kingdom with an untamed land around it? A forest? Urban area? Swampland? A desert? These environments give you an expectation on what kind of creatures you can put in the tables.

If you're setting the campaign in a kingdom with a rather untamed wilderness, for example, things like roaming bandits, goblins, wolves, orcs roaming outside of the city walls is plausible. For non-combat you can throw traveling merchants, a chest buried in the area, commoners walking around, etc. You then try to compose the number of creatures you want per encounter. Like if you want them to run into orcs, think how many they'll run into. You can just make a solid "4 orcs" but if you want some randomness to it, make it "1d4+2 Orcs" Also it's fun to add some surprise encounters too. Players will get a good kick if they run into a monster out of their expected environment.

When you get a list of monsters/creatures/NPCs that your players might encounter in the area, tabulate them. Decide how many encounters you want and put it in the table. Of course, make it appropriate to the dice you're using. So have 12 encounters planned for a d12, d6 for 6, d20 for 20, etc. Of course you don't have to be too bound to solid numbers. You can make 19 encounters and let a d12+d8 decide. Ultimately, jot down your desired encounters on the table.

For fun, you can change it up depending on time of day or after a big event. Like in our example, the kingdom with an untamed wilderness suddenly had an uprising of demons due to a ritual gone wrong. After this point in the adventure, your PCs random encounters in this area has now demon-type enemies popping up.

To use them roll a d20, if it's 18 and up, roll your random encounter dice to see what comes up.
>>
>>52618776
Yeah I'm cutting and pasting it but I have no idea what I'm doing. I just ctrl + A everything and paste it into the new script

>>
>>52618798
Honestly I would go with the flow. I'm not saying you should always change the world accordingly to the player's theories, but if that's what the players want to do, at least this once, let them have it. It will be fun.
>>
>>52618818
I'm considering having him continue to not be a villain, and when the party finally gets to him he'll be like: "what the fuck is your issue with me, jesus christ," I'm already laughing.

I need help with maps and scales.

You see I made this city, and my players have been around quite a lot so our adventures have been very urban-heavy. Now they want to go out and see the next city. Thing is, I'm not sure exactly how to make a proper scale as I draw my map esp when hexagons are concerned. I mean, I keep thinking in my mind it should take 2-3 days to get there but whenever I draw my map, it looks so fucked up that you'd think it was just around the corner.

Pretty much, I'm not really good with calculating distances. Sometimes I underestimate just how damn far certain miles are and such. I know I shouldn't be too realistic cause this is all fantasy but I still want it to be within the realm of possibility for my players when they travel.

My ONE complaint with 5e is that scaling is COMPLETELY bizarre in it for many characters.

The OH monk, for example, gets ZERO offensive upgrades after level 5 and before 17.
The Eldritch Knight gets a cantrip + weapon routine at 7th that starts off good, but goes nowhere.

Why do they do this shit? Is it just to break my heart?

Honestly it seems d&d only has five levels worth playing and the rest are nothing but grinds. I'm not convinced my group will ever play d&d "right" but they're having fun so it's whatever. My gnome wizzy in hotdq was becoming broken quickly. I'm not looking to repeat that experience at all. Barbarian's have next to no inherent out-of-combat utility and PHB Rangers are bad, so if they're being played badly yeah a competent Druid is going to outshine them every step of the way.

A Bard is going to need to fuck up really, really hard, though. What's yours doing that is making him irrelevant compared to you?

At level 3, they have, iirc, Heat Metal and Silence, the former of which deals 22d8 fire damage to anyone who is armored (even if its just a chain shirt or breastplate), and the latter of which shuts down enemy spellcasters.
