What do you think about races with light sensitivity such as drow and kobolds?
>>
What are the rules in DnD regarding spells that pertain to trapping bigger objects into smaller space?

For example, let's say a wizard wants to trap an entire building and all its inhabitants in a cube. This cube can be transported around and even opened by anyone that knows a specific spoken password. If the cube gets opened then the building and all its inhabitants appear in a space that can be specified by the person that opened the cube, provided they can actually see it.

I am asking because I have an idea for a session in which the party stumbles upon a place that is marked as a village on their map. After some investigating they find out that a powerful wizard in a desperate attempt to save the village and all its inhabitants from the wrath of a demonic force trapped the village in spheres or cubes. The wizard was destroyed and the spheres were scattered in the surrounding region. Some of them still lie in the wilderness, untouched. Some of them were picked up by goblins that live in the surrounding mountain range, others collected by travelers as a strange curiosity and an adventuring trinket and then there are a few that found their way into the dens and caves of wild animals, maybe even horrible beasts or mystical creatures.

The adventurers will be able to collect spheres all around the region and eventually be able to piece together the village with all its inhabitants and buildings. Do you think that would be an interesting thing to do as a player?

They are pretty shit to be honest.
>>
>>52603861
Do we really need 2? Can we not just stick with 1 for now?
>>
>>52603861
Did they take down the first one on purpose or did it just go down?
Also, because I'm paranoid and a little stupid, is it possible to store this thing on a flash drive or other offline source or does it rely on an internet connection to work?
>>
What is the favored race of edgelords? I'm guessing Tiefling for guys and Drow for girls.

Nah, I'm pretty sure most male Drow are betas that want to wank about how hard it is being the only good aligned Drow. Female Drow are generally evil femdom spider queen assassins.

The guy who ran the trove, 5etools and 5etools roll20 script got in legal trouble from Roll20 for hosting their assets. He wasn't fully anon, or he could have just ignored him of course.

So now the trove is run by some other anon I guess, 5etools (which is technically fine, doesn't use any roll20 stuff) has 2 mirrors and the script doesn't work.

Does the monk's unarmed strike count as a "weapon attack?" I know it counts as a monk weapon attack, but for other creature's defenses like "You may use your reaction when you are hit by a melee weapon attack to..." would an unarmed strike trigger that?

They aren't "melee weapons", but you can make "melee weapon attacks" with them.

It's dumb I know.

Yeah, the mount from Find Steed is not independent. It doesn't even roll its own initiative like a familiar does.

If Minute Meteors targets only the caster, then having fun blowing yourself up. I know there's been long arguments about it, but the intention is that spells target the creatures they affect.

If a lizardfolk druid uses primeval savagery for a bite attack would they still heal?

Alright, let me rephrase that. I want a leader type Barbarian archetype that I can play seriously, and that can use that Dragonborn +1 CHA. The closest I've been able to find is a rather good Luchadore Barbarian Archetype, but I can't play that one seriously.

Playing around with homebrewing a class. I want something based around the Master of Mounts prestige class I've seen float around.
Basically a character entirely dedicated to fighting with a companion that they earn the trust of.
However, how high is to high? They'd get to choose their initial mounts based on CR. I was thinking going above the Druids elemental, since it'd be separate from the character and wouldn't necessarily be damage soak for them.
>>
>>52604604

Battlemaster fighter, never gets old when it comes to wreck shit without multiclassing; add a crapton of feats and start with a human variant. Bonus points for getting a magical crossbow, crossbow expert feat and sharpshooter feat; wreck fools from afar or close and personal.

>>
>>52604679

Action surge. Even though the assassin does slightly more damage with the crit sneak, the fighter gets more consistent damage, multiple attacks (4 attacks per turn instead of one super attack with assassination). Also you get ability score increases faster and more feats with the fighter. The battle master maneuvers give it more flexibility as well.

Or just any god for that manner with chaotic inclinations...Anyone done that before?
>>

Well. Generally they'd speak to you in a way that you understand, but sounds... off? Tzeentch from 40k is a good example, he has several heads that all say the same words, in a slightly different intonation or voice, so as to change the meaning. Not sure how you'd pull it off but it's pretty rewarding for the DM if you do.

I ask because one of my players, notorious for playing around with rules and such, not to be that guy, but just for fun, has asked if he can start the game with two horses and a carriage for travelling in. I want to let him have it because he's playing a merc and it makes sense to have some form of travel, but I wanted to make double sure he isn't gonna turn it into some kind of improvised horsebomb or a rocketship that converts farts into gold or something ridiculous.

No, use them. The game's point buy system doesn't let you get higher than 15, so that you got a lot of good, if not stellar, stats is really good. You won't get a 20 in your best stat any sooner, but you won't have to boost your secondary stats and can start taking feats earlier.

Numbers are more dangerous than single monsters, which is why the DMG has you apply a multiplier for more monsters. But a single monster at ANY XP level is weaker than it seems. 5e lets players make full attacks much more easily than 3e/PRG did, so their damage output tends to be very high, and disabling abilities can completely neuter even a powerful enemy if they blow one save.

Generally, if you're planning a boss fight, always have minions. Always.

I understand the confusion here.

Yes, the cliffs off to the east are obviously drawn in such a way that you'd think the part with the light border is the "top" and the solid outline with shadow is the bottom.

However, the artist also drew the cliffs bordering the obvious mountain in the reverse way. The part with the solid outline is on the inside (up the mountain), while the unbordered section is on the outside (down the mountain).

And we know from other drawings and descriptions that yes, Waterdeep is elevated. So you're right, the player is wrong, but it's 100% understandable that the player would think there's a valley because holy shit that artist really fucked up the cliffs.

>>
>>52605961
4e Tiefling is pretty OP. I don't know much about 5e Tiefling but if it isn't the best caster race by far then it counts as a nerf.
>>
>>52606019
Still, if a someone feels tieflings are too weak they have little else to choose from that's stronger
>>
So the reach property specifically states: "This weapon adds 5 feet to your reach when you attack with it."

Does that mean that enemies still only provoke opportunity attacks if they a space adjacent to you, and not within 10 feet?
>>
>>52606019
>>52606045

They're technically not a *great* race because Int is so damn weak this edition. Plus, even if you are one of the classes that use Int (EK, AT, Wiz), you don't use Cha. But resistance to fire and a few cantrips aren't terrible.
>>
So - is STR a always dumb stat in 5th ED? You can use dex bonus to hit and damage equal to any one handed weapon vs using STR. Range weapons are all Dex based. Two handed weapon damage is so-so seeing you giving up a shield to use them. Getting a high AC is hard without one.
Heavy Armor outside of full plate is a joke vs all medium armor types. You still bad a stealth with full plate.
A lot of Dex skills and spell saves - very few STR ones. Am I reading this the wrong way?
>>
>>52606094

No, if it's the reach property of a weapon, you only get opportunity attacks when they exit your 10' reach entirely.

If you're referring to Polearm Master, it's when they enter that 10' reach, not if they move from 10' to 5' of you.
>>
>>52605961
A lot of better caster races out there. The fire rest. is OK but there are spells for that and the race is best as casters so.....
>>
>>52606130
If you really want to be optimal there are very few places where strength is better than dex.
remove dex to damage on ranged/finesse attacks reeee
>>
>>52605761
Well yeah, that's what I tried to draw, but it's hard enough drawing hands with a mouse, and perspective is hard too. Let me try again.
>>
>>52606130
>is STR always a dumb stat?

No. You can use polearms and heavy weapons only using STR, and they work the best with feats and certain character interactions (e.g. half-orcs). In addition, Athletics is used for combat maneuvers like Shove, which can be very important. It's also a Barbarian's only option if they intend to use Rage Damage, which, yes, is a forced way to do it, but there it is.

>Heavy armor outside of full plate is a joke vs all medium armor types. You still bad a stealth with full plate.

Is it? Breastplate +2 dex is equal to the Chain Mail anyone can have at level 1. Half plate is better, sure, but it has that same disadvantage on Stealth you're talking about, and if you can get Half Plate, the heavy-armor user can get Split, which beats Half-Plate.

>Range weapons are all Dex based
Well, except the 'melee' weapons with the throwing property. Also Darts, which have Finesse.

I play a Wizard and my spells like Suggestion, Polymorph, Wall of Force, Blindness and Counterspell are really doing a lot of work but no one seems to pay attention because I don't really do much damage.

The DM keeps saying our party has gotten very strong and he always looks at the warlock who is just spamming Eldritch Blast or the rogue who does one decent sneak attack every round.
Honestly the biggest damage dealer in the party is the Cleric using Spirit Guardians and positioning himself correctly, but the DM hasn't noticed that either.

new to DnD. If a saving throw or any action really has a DC does the player have to match the DC or go above or does he always need to go above to succeed?

For example, someone wants to smash open a door with his body and rolls on Athleticism on a DC of 15. Does he succeed if he rolls 15 or above? Or does he only succeed if he rolls 16 or above?

The DM needs to go "Oh, you are SO strong and important" to the weak classes, because if your group is playing to win DnD with damage instead of focusing on characterization, then the players running those classes will just lose interest or reroll their characters.

>>
>>52606511
What you described sounds like no check at all
>>
>>52606852
the player handbook doesn't seem to be quiet clear on the passive wisdom distinction. If I have a passive wisdom of 14 and someone sneaks with a stealth check of 14 then does the game treat it as if the player rolled? Or does it treat it as the difficulty class someone else has to overcome?

What if no roll takes place? Let's say that there is a crack in a wall that seems strange and the DC of noticing that strange crack is 14. Does a character with passive wisdom of 14 immediately notice the crack and do I tell them about it? How does this work if the DM has to compare static scores?
>>
>>52606894

Passive Perception is just a rules patch on previous editions. Essentially, it's about the players not rolling Perception. If the DM asks the players to roll Perception, they'll think there's something sneaking around, even if they failed the check. Even good roleplayers have trouble with it.

So it just assumes you roll a 10 if you're not actively looking around for something.
>>
>>52606816
Depends. If it's something like 9 vs 18 str, no check at all. If it's a 16 str fighter vs 18 str barbarian athletics since irl arm wrestling isn't based purely on strength

>If Minute Meteors targets only the caster
The spell itself clearly targets only the caster as it has a range of self and unlike cone of cold doesn't even have an AoE.
However, the effect of the spell has a range of 120ft.

It's like casting an aura on yourself - the effect affects around you, but you cast it on yourself.

Also, if you're not mounted on the find steed ount, then there's nothing that actually says it wouldn't be able to act independently. That'd be like saying 'If you walk away from your horse and ask it to approach, it won't be able to do it.'

http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/09/16/find-steed-steed-can-attack-on-your-turn/

The steed has normal action options when you're not riding it.

Get on the mount. Cast melf's minute meteors. Get off the mount. Watch mount launch meteors.
>>
>>52607116
Seriously, that's bullshit. When my players want to train something, I have them make a note of the language or proficiency and write 480 next to it. Then, for each hour they spend studying that language/proficiency they remove 1 from that number. When they hit 240 hours left, they gain the ability to decipher languages or use the tool with a successful INT check. Failure indicates that they can't put together the information they need. Also, tutoring just makes the hour reduction double, and anyone proficient in a skill or language can tutor you.
>>
>>52607116
Know what's even funnier? You can cast a spell that let's you understand another language in ONE SECOND.
>>
>>52607041
Pretty sure the PHB states exactly that arm wrestling is a no check contest. Like that is the exact scenario they use for no check contests
>>
>>52606894
Pretty sure a passive check still counts as a roll and I haven't seen anything official that says that they count as DCs, that way you're never comparing two DCs against each other which I'm sure the rules don't intend.
So the guy using stealth would not be seen because it's a tied contest and the situation of him not being seen wouldn't change, while the character would notice the window because his (passive) check total matched the DC.

Casting bless rarely prevents enemy attacks and it's usually better not to cast it, and use cure wounds after combat instead.

+2.5 avg to saves and to hit is always good, scales with level even if you're casting it off a 1st level slot, unlike CW. Killing enemies faster is always better than casting Cure Wounds.

And particularly early on, how much HP you have doesn't matter that much; if you have enough to reliably survive the next enemy turn that's cool, but if you don't then whatever, Healing Word will prop you up and whether you have max HP or 1 is unimportant, because the Fighter fights the same at any HP - but they fight better with Bless on.

My theory is that spells would be rated based on how much HP you would have after an encounter. I know that bless is a significant increase to hit, but it only changes the amount of HP you have after combat if hitting a creature with bless would cause it to take less turns. If an enemy needs 2 attacks to be killed and there are 4 players attacking before the enemy acts again, then bless isn't likely to change the outcome. The attacks that wouldn't hit without bless need to stop enemies from taking actions, which they are unlikely to do given hp mechanics and turn order.

Been there and never allowed to do it. The fact your DM is letting it happen is why it well happen. This might lead to losing one or more players but your DM got to lean not to allowed good/evil mixed groups

I swing my sword, I swing my sword, I swing my sword.

And don't you give me that "as a fighter I get to improvise" crap, anyone can do that and more. Being a wizard doesn't make you unable to strategize.

I get what you're trying to say, but any leftover attacks can easily go on to other enemies, and Bless is also protecting you from being denied actions for failing a save.

It's better to be proactive than reactive. It's better to risk overcommitting resources than taking stock afterwards and apply the minimum indispensable to recover. You're comparing 7.5 fucking HP recovery for one person to a combat-length full party buff that is going to be used every single turn of that encounter.

And most importantly, hitting with attacks and making saves is more fun than failing.

Hey all, astranauta here again.

I noticed that someone complained about the script being broken, so I took some time to fix it up all roight and propa'. Additionally, I hooked it up to my github page, so any changes I make will always be available on the same page you download it from.

Looking to recreate an older character I played who was a Fighter/Thief.

Is there any point to multiclassing the two classes nowadays or is a Swashbuckler or Fighter X/Rogue 1 the optimal coice?
>>

There's literally no reason to multiclass as a fighter/rogue, unless you want archery fighting style. Pick a swashbuckler.

Are you noting how that's unrealistically long to accomplish in game outside of time skips, or how that's an unrealistically short amount of time to learn a language?
>>
>>52608277
Hobs are the shorter ones and therefore the children.
>>
>>52608460
it's a complete bullshit amount of time to learn something considering that most campaigns without dedicated players don't even run 250 days.
>>
>>52607116
Oh wow, it takes a WHOLE YEAR to learn a profession to the same extent as someone already well learned in the subject!
How terrible!

It's almost as if they don't want an elf having 50 years of downtime and coming back knowing literally everything in existence!

It's a conservative number. If the DM wants to drop that, they can.

Okay, so while I don't want to keep track of equipment weight, I don't like the idea of characters carrying lots and lots of equipment without consequence.

I've never been a fan of inventory slots because keeping track of weight isn't that hard.

If I was going to though I'd give an amount of slots equal to your Strength for anything of note and smaller stuff is free. Backpack gives you an extra slot or two.

Some items (Armour, Heavy weapons and etc.) take up two slots.

>Waterdeep is home to 2million people
>Luskan is home to 4000

I'm really confused by the population in some of these cities, especially compared to their maps. I'm assuming that there are many people that live outside the city walls, but even the amount of buildings within the walls seems lackluster.

in something completely unrelated, is Silverymoon the Portland of Faerun?

Where to find people to play D&D with?

If you can't return to your original body, you'll still die when the original Magic Jar ends, as with dispel magic. In other words, you'll die if you get dispelled or walk into an antimagic field, but can otherwise carry on as if this is normal.
>>
>>52605452
>Can I kill a werewolf with homebrewed rules?
Sure, I guess. Choking someone to death is probably unarmed attacks though.

>>52606130
Technically, strength has the best one-handed ranged weapon attacks, if you could keep up with the weapon drawing demands.

>>52607187
I didn't say it can't take actions, I said it doesn't roll its own initiative. It is plainly never an independent mount. As to the rest:

Actually, once it's permanent only dispelling will end it. If you die, you just die.

>>52607972
>Killing enemies faster is always better than casting Cure Wounds.
This is true, which is why it's hugely important to consider who is casting bless and what else they could do with that action.

Want to make a Monster Hunter themed character that dishes it out with a Greatsword and is mostly focused in investigation, perception, nature, arcana, and medicine.

Instead of just taking the Monster Hunter UA class I think it might fit my char more if I went 2 lvls into Fighter and the rest into the redone UA Ranger. Playing variant human though so I have no clue what would be a better feat, Alert, Observant, or Great Weapon Master.
>>
>>52611161
Why not just make a Monster Slayer Revised Ranger?
>>
>>52603889
I'd say any half-elf. It's really easy to Mary/Gary-stue the thing. You get more languages and skills with it, Darkvision, But you also have this tortured background despite being attractive.
>Elves think I'm less than them, humans expect too much of me.
It's basically a Fanfic OC.
>>
>>52603834
so you made the plot of Dark Cloud your campaign? I like it.
>>
>>52608481
Devil's Advocate here: I think the rules assume you're not adventuring 100% of the time. You can train while traveling (if the teacher is ap arty member, natch), or during downtime between separate adventures - and due to the lifestyle expenses on page 157, we can assume that the time between adventures is intended to be weeks or months.

Still, I'd lower it to 30 days in any game I'm running, since the party is intended to be Big Damn Heroes after all.
