Use the rules from 2E, and the random monster tables, Monster Manual, etc. from 1E

2e has a better ruleset, but Gygax was a vastly better DM than Cook ever was.

If you can only afford 2e, get 2e. If you can also afford the 1e DMG, get it and read it. You will learn SO MUCH.
