>Which control-based commander is your favorite?
Well that question could go a variety of ways since there is different methods of control such as Ruric, Thar Unbowed being about punishment but Dralnu, Lich Lord being about recurring spells.

All things aside, Queen Marchesa.

How does /tg/ feel about Hapatra? It seems like there could be a lot of cool synergies with her.

I just wish she had deathtouch and was a naga.
>>
>>52581646
She's the commander I needed. I already wanted to make Blowfly/Nest/Flourishing combo work and she functions as a command zone Nest.
>>
>>52581646
Yeah, deathtouch or trample could go a long way toward making her a lot better. But stuff like Contagion Engine, any infect creatures, or that new Pit of Scarabs card could be pretty cool with her. I'll probably try brewing something up once the set comes out

I need help EDHG

I'm building a 1984 theme deck with Nebuchadnezzar as the commander

I need as many cards that abuse lookin at hands, forcing constant discard, and making discard hurt as possible.
I got telepathy, zurs weirding, seers vision , and bottomless pit type enchantments

I want to have a huge hand while my enemies have nothing, and I want to slowly grind my enemies down with cards like "the rack"

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

First: Yes, if you control both, you may stack them as you choose.
Second: Hive Mind does not cast copies. Eye of the Storm casts copies of the spell, but Eye of the Storm can only trigger on spell cards.

If Eye of the Storm resolves first, the spell card is exiled. Then, copies of each of the cards exiled by EotS may be cast. Each copied spell cast this way will trigger Hive Mind and be copied for each player. When all of these Hive Mind triggers are resolved, the original Hive Mind trigger will resolve, creating copies of the spell which started the chain.

If Hive Mind resolves first, each player copies the spell. Then, after the copies resolve but before the original spell (the spell card) resolves, EotS will exile it. Then, copies of each of the cards exiled by EotS may be cast, each copied spell triggering Hive Mind. Finally, the original spell to start the chain will resolve.

Trying to see what cards I can do straight upgrades on in my Atraxa deck. Which one do you prefer /edh/?

Unmaking saves me like 2 bucks to put towards a cyclonic rift and has a stronger removal ability with the exile. Vindicate just hits things but I also run a Beast Within in the deck.

>>
>>52583227
Yes, so long as you control carnifex demon. (Specifically, control carnifex demon's ability, but it's usually the same.)

The two cards I mentioned have effects that give all players the choice to place counters, so counters your opponents place wouldn't trigger Hapatra.

my play group is losing their fucking minds over Kefnet swearing up and down that it's going to be an extremely good card for EDH. I tell them I'm unimpressed and they start trying to gang up on me about it. So the real question would be how would you go about slapping it down to prove a point?
>>
>>52584030
It's pretty much just an indestructible permanent that reads 3U: draw a card, so yeah, it's got its place in plenty of blue decks but it won't redefine the format.
>>
>>52584030
Amonkhet gods are still creatures even when you're not satisfying their requirements so any degree of creature exile gets rid of them.
>>
>>52584060

Could make the green one interesting if there is an in-set source of repeatable fight. After all, fighting isn't attacking or blocking.
>>
>>52584030
Don't forget that if you play Kefnet on turn 3 you'll very likely have 7 cards in your hand.
An indestructible flying 5/5 creature for just 3 mana on turn 3 is pretty great.

It's not incredible, but it's definitely not as bad as /tg/ makes it out to be.
>>
>>52584024

>>
>>52584103

>>
>>52584131
Your group is not playing enough good removal then.

Song of the Dryads, Lignify, Darksteel mutation, Swords, Path are all serious cards once Gods start becoming a usual thing in your group.
>>
>>52582188
Use Sen triplets instead, literally controlling your opponent's ideas. Hell, the triplets could even stand for the three slogans if you want to think of it like that. It's also better with telepathy style cards.
>>

Guys if I have Temur Ascendancy on the field and cast something like insurrection, does it trigger?

Also if i exile I creature I stole with Yasova with Conjurers Closet, does it get back to me?

No; the creatures aren't entering the battlefield since they're already on the battlefield; they just change controllers.

He's very good for control. You cast him then just use him as a 5/5 to beat face while holding up mana. If there's nothing you need to counter or remove, you use his ability to draw so there's no real downside to playing reactively. He's an Azure Mage and a wincon for 3 mana.

You're dumb. The cast trigger makes this indefinitely better because it doesn't matter if the spell is countered or exiled by means after the 2nd cast, you will still win the game. The spell resolves on cast.

Felidar is okay, but draws you an insurmountable hate and gets removed instantly.
>>
>>52586848

>>
>>52587565

>>52587524
Yes, they can, it's essentially useless unless you just want to Mana Short them. Alternatively you can have support for it such as Price of Glory, so they don't tap their lands before you get the chance to.

Note that with Price of Glory, you tapping their lands won't destroy them since you personally are the one tapping them, and it's your own turn.

What pisses me off the most is that you're repeatedly posting wrong information in the thread when it would've taken you mere moments to figure out the truth. You're worthless, yet you parade around a trip as if anyone, in their entire lives should ever for an instant care who you are or what you have to say.

Just look at these posts.
>>52587288
>>52586881
>>52586019
They're wrong. You don't understand the rules of the game, not even some of the simplest ones like dictating what a triggered ability is. And yet you continue to post as if you do, actively lowering the quality of this thread.

You could've Googled this, but here you go because spoonfeeding children is apparently a hobby of mine.
>603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as “[When/Whenever/At] [trigger condition or event], [effect].”

So to sum it up. The first cast of Spanish Name does not have to resolve, or to even come from your hand. The second cast however must both resolve and be cast from your hand. When that happens you win the game, unless your opponent controls a Gideon Planeswalker and has his emblem, which they probably do.

While we're here, As Foretold allows you to cast Ancestral Vision and friends.

>>52587685

>>
>>52585036
I like that it's a curse.

I don't like that it's a durdly 8-turn clock if there's nothing to sac so it doesn't really hurt control, while it only kneecaps one player so control doesn't really want it. Honestly, I'd rather have Nettlevine Blight -- at least if I ramp explosively into Blight its ability to hit lands turns it into "fuck target player"
>>
>>52587815
I concede I kept posting speculation on how the cards works, but only because we don't even know if this is the actual english card text. I did mention it in >>52587288 but whatever.

>You're worthless, yet you parade around a trip as if anyone, in their entire lives should ever for an instant care who you are or what you have to say.
Shit nigga do you think I care about people caring about me in a mongolian glassblowing forum? I just trip because I can, there's nothing about it connected to that. I never got why some anons think that since someone trips necessarily they are narcissistic fucks.

Can someone explain to me exactly how this card works?

They reveal 3, choose a creature to put into play and then I reveal 3 after or at the same time? Do I get to see what their choice is before I reveal, or before I choose which to put in, or does it happen at the same time?
>>
>>52586218
Anything with the text "You win the game" is moderately interesting.

Anything with a CMC of 7 had better be more than 'moderatley interesting'

On the other hand, it is literally a 1-card instant win I see it being pretty good for those decks in casual metas that just want to cower behind their pillow fort and durdle. Maybe Zedruu can draw enough cards to have it fire in a reasonable timespan?
>>
>>52588092
Also if they don't put a creature card into play do I still reveal? Since it's a "may" on their side, does that end the effect of the card? Maybe I'm over thinking this shit I'm not sure.

Does anyone else feel a bit out of place when playing Magic at a local game shop?

I mean, I don't want to be mean but it just seems like the vast majority of Magic players are either horribly overweight, extremely anti-social, legitimately on the spectrum or all of the above. Not to mention the atrocious smell of body odor emitting from these people, and the weird shit they say, and the weird way they play the game, and the extremely strange satisfaction they get out of playing a counter spell or playing a big creature...

I don't know, every time I go into one of those places I start to question what wrong path I took in my preteen years to end up knowing how to play this game. How do I find normal human beings to play magic with? Do they exist?

Depends on your power level. It's mediocre for a meta where the precons (with maybe a bit of tuning) are the measuring stick since it does nothing when it drops and only nets one card the following turn. If it ramped you the next turn instead it's be much better.

I was supposed to go to a EDH game last night but decided to stay at home and play Nier: Automata. The people out here are the kind of people you're talking about, who are incapable of having a conversation about anything but the game.

But Southern California has the strange subtype of Magic player my friends call the "smug Asian." Fucking Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, I don't fucking care, but they're so smug when they play that I have literally walked out of a shop when I see like a dozen Asians. The worst part is all these guys travel from shop to shop in packs, so going to ANY shop means I may have to deal if I want to play.

Gideon is the only member of the Gatewatch I actually like, but he'll almost certainly die.

>Gideon doesn't have any ongoing subplots
>Gideon is the getting the most attention this arc
>Gideon is the leader and moral center of the group, making his death especially tragic
>Gideon will be overcoming his tragic past when he defeats a god
>Gideon will be overcoming his only personalty flaw by recognizing that order and brotherly solidarity aren't inherently good
And they're already got a white 'walker replacement with Ajani.

There's no fucking way Gideon survives all these death flags.

From a lore perspective, they should have started as friends who spent time together because they genuinely enjoyed each others company.
They should have started off as a group of misfits, adventurous and explorers, but slowly became dedicated hero's over the course of the story. They only officially create the Gatewatch after one of their group is killed (or something).

The point is, they shouldn't just be together out of some sense of circumstantial responsibility. The Gatewatch don't have any shared history or natural chemistry.
They tolerate each others presence because they literally have no other friends. That's not engaging, or interesting, or heartfelt.

As a result, the group-bonding scenes in the lore are very tacky, like the Nissa and Chandra bonding on Kaledesh.
Nissa's internal monologue was straight up saying "we friends now," despite the fact that they'd barely spoken to each other, or interacted with each other, or even had anything in common,
It's incredibly obvious that these characters are only together for meta reasons. Nissa and Chandra are friends because they were the only available mono-colored red or green planeswalkers, so they became auto-includes in the Gatewatch. It's like their friendship is the result of affirmative action.

It's hard for me to care about this group of people when they barely care about each other, and when they do it feels forced and artificial.

I'd be great if the Legion of Doom were the complete opposite of the Gatewatch.
Like, after arriving on a plane the LoD would destroy the natural order of the world for shits and giggles, and then leave before they had to deal with the consequences of their actions.
After every escapade they'd grab a beer together and joke about old times. They're not awkward in each others company and they're not secretly plotting behind each others backs; they don't have any reason to be a team except that they genuinely care for each other.

I dunno how you like to play, so here's a broad range of suggestions. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice on the Snake subtheme.

Hex Parasite + Tornado
Hex Parasite, Quest For Renewal, & Seedborn Muse + Freyalise's Winds
Haunted Crossroads + Lurking Predators and/or Call of the Wild
Burgeoning, Exploration, & Gaea's Touch serve one better than Khalni Heart Expedition.
If you want mana ramp sorceries, replace Kodama's Reach and Cultivate with Harrow and Life From the Loam.
Dauthi Embrace (Great fun with Vraska's assassin tokens.)
Grave Pact (You already have Dictate of Erebos, after all.)
Tortured Existence
Greater Good
Lignify
Squandered Resources
Cadaverous Bloom
Insidious Dreams
Gleancrawler
No Rest for the Wicked
Infernal Tribute
Mind Slash
Oversold Cemetery
Gate to Phyrexia
Attrition
Bonds of Mortality
Mirri's Guile
Cryptolith Rite
Diabolic Servitude
Abundance

Hope some of this proves helpful for ya.

Old Emrakul isn't indestructible, and if you think protection would stop it from being destroyed, you need to look up what DEBT stands for.

If you used that hypothetical card on a Serra's avatar, would you have to shuffle it into the library from the battlefield? or is there a "change-of-zone" rule that would allow it to stay in play?
Its effect is kind of similar to Emrakul's but phrased differently, so...

I decided to sell my Standard deck (G/R Pummeler) to buy one of the Commander 2016 decks. I never played EDH, so i'm looking for advice on which is the best deck to play (I liked Kynaios a lot, but i didn't look the other lists yet). I don't like to play blue/black, but since it's my first time on a new format, i think it would be interesting to expand my color pie, so any deck type would be appreciated (i just don't want to be a piece of shit with the other players).

Well, i just want a format where i can have fun, and commander looks like it.
>>
>>52602674
It wouldn't work with Blightsteel, jesus christ. Learn what are replacement effects, since that fucker won't hit your grave, unless he somehow loses that ability, which only happens from the battlefield to my knowledge.
Besides, 10 poison counters is enough to kill, you don't need any more.
>>
>>52602871
If we're being serious, I wouldn't pick any of the new ones, but rather anything else from 2013 onwards.
If you're dead set on the new ones though, I would recommend Breya or Yidris.

Why not? The 2016 decks are pretty good.

Is it just that they're too common?
>>
>>52602931
That's unfortunate, what's the problem with the 2016 decks?

>>
>>52603036
>>52603045
Mostly the mana bases are awful, Saskia being the worst if I recall.
If you want to play out of the box, Yidris is probably the best, but I'd say that each of them needs somewhat to be tuned.
It really depends on how do you want to play, but I'd pick probably Seize Control or Swell the Host. Boros one is only good for face sitting

I just realized, right now, that of course Wizards is gonna have the Jacestice League kill off Bolas. Even if they are on his favorite plane. Even if he is the all powerful god Pharaoh. Even if he's had these plans in motion for centuries, they're just gonna fucking seal him in a moon and be done with him and pat each other on the back and mover onto the next big bad to imprison in a moon in the name of equality.

Really, honestly, anything that would make the Gatewatch realize that they maybe weren't the actual gud guys. All they've really done so far is try to fix problems they created (IE, the near-destruction of two planes) because of their lack of foresight.

Plus, Kaladesh, which was pretty disappointing story-wise and just proved that some of their writers probably had evidence of Maro killing a hooker.

Honestly I'll never get over that.

It's a sad day when an artist for MtG tells a better story than the entirety of the lore writing team.
Isobel's story alone is so much better than anything from Kaladesh, Origins, or BFZ, and better than anything in SoI that had any of the Gatewatch in it.

Lol, no. They never listen to feedback, they think they're always right and any hate is just "part of the internet"
http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/158953269553/did-you-anticipate-some-of-the-negative-criticisms
They idiotically believe that all the hate they get is "the nature of the internet" even when 95% of players stated directly to Wizards and MaRo that they hated the Invocation and Aftermath frames.

Plus, they always go back on what they say. I wouldn't be suprised if they said they listened just to get the players to calm down, and then go back on it and make even MORE Jacetice League shit.

Your question on "the best deck to play" doesn't really fit the format. Absolute play to win is not really the point (build casually, play competitively is what most people hold themselves to).

As for what deck you should build, just think of a legendary with a cool ability, or a bunch of cool interactions and build a deck around them.
For example, when I saw gilt leaf archdruid for the first time I started building a seton druid tribal go wide deck, and am having a lot of fun with it.
>>
>>52603581
MadAvacyn would be lore-fitting.
Gisela is a redhead like Isobel and probably a little better mechanically, though being Boros commanders neither brings much to the table

Decisions, decisions...
>>
>>52602871
c16 out of the box? Eeeeh... avoid Saskia? Yidris and Breya are both commanders with a lot of room to be built up competitively. Breya is better out of the box, but Yidris represents a more unique experience.

There are also the Partners, of which Thrasios is actually fairly competitive, typically paired with Kydele (to keep things in UG and have a little synergy before infinite mana fun times), Tymna (Because CA and getting 4 colors), or Vial Smasher (Because people like Vial Smasher? For real EDH, I don't get it, sure she works in the 20-life bizarro world that's Duel Commander...). However none of the Partner pairs run their deck well to begin with and they're pretty bad access points for the new EDH player.

If you can get an older deck like Mizzix, Meren, Daretti, Teferi, or Oloro instead, consider that.

MaRo is but one man -- he made his belief that Nagas were a mistake very clear and what do we get in Amonkhet? More Nagas, because the rest of the team disagreed. His statement on the matter is amusingly passive aggressive.

And yet even he, one of the most fervent defenders of the Jacetice League, has indicated that scaling back Gatewatch presence is something coming in Hour and later. We probably won't be lucky enough to see them decimated like the Weatherlight Crew or slaughtered like the Nine Titans. Not yet. But I'm pretty sure Gatewatcher blood CAN flow, effective as of Hour. It's only a matter of time and concentrated hate before it does.
