What do you kind gents think the prettiest Magic Art is.
It holds nostalgia value for me sure, but I still think it's one of the finest pieces printed.
Definitely nothing by Argyle that's for sure.
Igor Kieryluk is awesome when he's on point. When he isn't it's really bad CG.
I'm also a really large fan of anything by Chris Rahn.

ooh i got a couple. it's too bad they cropped out the little sliver of moon for the actual card because i think that really sews it together.
>>52575717
second-best terror coming through
>>52575739
rebecca guay's stuff is pretty solid imo. very evocative of like classic fairytale vibes
>>52575763
anyway, avatar of woe is the best art magic has ever produced. maybe i just think so because of nostalgia, but on the other hand, look at that shit. it's nightmarishly insistent. sticks with you. spooky stuff.
>>52575739
(for the record, this is the best terror)
always been a fan of reveillark as well. and a lot of lorwyn stuff generally
>>52575886
>Ron Spencer's Nebraskan high school homework.
>Prettiest art
>>52575930
not prettiest, but best
although i realize now OP says "prettiest"
>>52575966
It looks like something a 15 year old would stick to the bottom of their skateboard, not something anyone would consider "the best" artwork.
>>52576003
eh, agree to disagree
>>52576030
Or I could just agree that you have bad taste and move on with my day regardless.
>>52575763
I'm a big fan of Rebecca Guay. Shame she doesn't make art for cards anymore.
I really like this one. Some of the older more abstract blue art is really dope looking. Most of the first ravnica lands. Both mirodin runs, although they're not so much pretty as messed up biomechanical.
>>52576003
I'mma challenge this one.
The original artwork for Terror does its job absolutely perfectly. It conveys terror. I honestly can't think of any image that, to me, makes me think of someone literally dying of fright. Look at the body language, the color choice, and that god damn facial expression.
Sure, it's not very realistic and it's honestly not that technically impressive (I could in fact see a relatively skilled 15 year old drawing that on a skateboard) but by god does it convey terror well.
>>52576069
this one, derp
Gotta be Starfall personally, if only just because the card looks so damn pretty in foil.
>>52576067
She actually did all the Commander 2016 basic lands if I recall correctly.
An absolute favorite of mine. Wish I could find a higher rez version.
>>52576075
Eh, you make fair points. I'll give it to you that the art does convey "terror" very well. Still doesn't fit any criteria for "The Best" depiction of such, in my opinion.
>>52576150
well it's at least better than the mirrodin version
>>52576164
I believe we can all agree to that.

>>52575840
I can't believe they wasted that art on that card.
God DAMN
Basically anything completely abstract gets me rock hard.
I've got an 8-meg scan of this; shit is cash. Take the good parts of Time Walk, get rid of the daft shit like traffic cones, and add some more symbolism.
>>52574165not a great pic, but the best on google images
Love the dancing figure
More land
>>52579481
in a similar vein
>>52575840
Don't derail this into an argument, now, but Kamigawa had some great art.
>>52579515
That almost looks like thomas kinkade.
W/B has the best art of any combination.
>>52579538
That may well be intentional. I love it when they try to borrow other art styles.
More Impressionism, less generic CG!
>>52575495
I just found out that Nielsen is a flaming homosexual, which explains this art.
>>52575495
This is my favorite Nielsen art, and my favorite card.
Big fan of Peter Mohrbacer, creative hand behind Eberos and Animar

Always loved the art on this card.
Actually most of the enchantment creatures are pretty nice looking, but this one always stood out.
>>52579565
D. Alexander Gregory's stuff is generally my favorite, because it still looks like traditional art while also being strong and crisp. Plus I like how "somber" a lot of his art is, and how well his colors tend to blend without washing out.
>>52579834
>>52579565
>>52579593
That art makes me really want to play R/G Tron.
>>52579867
He's responsible for a ton of classics, but I don't like how he made Liliana look like a bony crack whore.
>>52579810
>using references makes you not creative
>>52579931
Right? I'd buy the card in a hummingbird's heartbeat if it wasn't actually good and therefore insanely expensive. Fuck.
>>52579962
I'm actually kind of a fan of him making her look gaunt and tired, but still kind of attractive. A black-aligned wizard that's made all kinds of unholy pacts with all manner of dark forces shouldn't really look made-up and voluptuous, in my opinion.I don't hate turbohot Lili either because I love women like that personally. But that's just like, my opinion man. Also, good choice on a card for your reply. Another one of his stronger pieces.
>>52575876
>Liking Restoslut

>>52575894
Of all the over rated arts in all of magic, this one is the most over rated
>>52580210
No need to knock on Johannes Voss just because you got thragged in the tusk.
I'd say the best era for MTG art is roughly from Ice Age to Ravnica. Ravinca-Alara is a lesser era. Zendikar is the decline, with Theros basically being basically the death of widespread quality art.
Not saying that current cards are universally bad (Oketra is cute) but overall a lot of magic has been lost.
>>52580276
Do you think a supplementary set printed with old borders and traditional-medium-art only would sell?
>>52578443
I see you're also a man of discerning taste.
>>52579810

>no based Dave Kendall
y'all need to step it up
>>52575763
I've heard she's a colossal cunt, which is a shame if true.
>>52580276
would agree. The art direction has gone waaaaay more uniform. Feels like they just allow the already iconic artists to do their own thing and keep the new artists from actually developing their craft.
also based Kev Walker my nigga
>>52579867
>Liliana of the Crystal Meth
>>52580327
I like van Camp's weird collages along with Margaret Knead(?)'s mosiac motif.
I think it would sell. I'd love a retro set with the five main Theros gods drawn by diTerlizzi or werewolves/eldrazi by Ron Spencer. What's more likely though is just a reprint set of "iconic" cards.
>>52580439
It feels like the styleguides have definitely become more rigid as time has progressed.
Argyle has really cheesy art but he's the only one who can depict Chandra correctly
>>52579810
>artist uses references, more at 11
>>52579834
I love it, reminds me of like a 90s point and click adventure game
>>52580610
I liked her haircut in Oath. It's cute.
>>52580276
Holy shiiiit this card
Kev Walker can bang me retarded anyday.
>>52580879
See, you get it. It's so pleasant. Doesn't club you over the head with its color identity either.
>>52579633
holy fucking shit thats ugly. is your post meant to be ironic or something?
go post somewhere else mohrbacer
>>52580868
There's a difference between using a reference and blatantly coloring over an existing photograph.
Best artist, best 'walker, and a much better interpretation of what "Planeswalker" cards should be than the current cancerous supertype.
>>52579633

Yeah, just make sure you hit up a doctor if the erection lasts more than four hours though.
But if we're talking angels, Gisela is probably my favorite. Angelic Captain comes close though.
>>52580241
It's the best mountain and forest.
>>52581926
i always liked angelic page
(more rebecca guay, too. how about that)
Maddocks and Tucker are still my favorites, Tucker especially. This one's not his best, but it's the only one I've got. His work is so fucking uneasy, it really helped flesh out the darker tone of the game's early history. As far as newer artists go, love Nils Hamm. Nielsen and Guay are also excellent and uh... RK Post. Really there are too many.
>>52574165
I don't know about prettiest, but this is my favorite. One of my desktop backgrounds.
Now that I think about it I'm using a much higher resolution monitor now and I never updated it.
>>52574165
Pretty much any art by Guay, Nielsen, rk post, and Hoover.I also unironically like the Foglios' art.
>>52576093
Cool art, but man that card is terrible.
>>52580610
A lot of his stuff looks kind of off at full size. I guess it's because he's designing it around the level of detail people will actually be able to see on the card.
Best angel coming through.
>>52579448
This card is my favorite foil that I own
>>52579878
I've always loved that pic, although I came across it in a slightly different context
>>52576087
On card art.
I have a certain affinity for this art. It's damn beautiful.
>>52574165
Yours was pretty good. I still need that card, but only because it looks nice.
>>52580276
I would strongly agree with this notion.
Personally, I really like a lot of the stuff that came out from Odyssey-block to Kamigawa-block (Onslaught-block in particular). The fact that WotC had fantastic illustrators such as the brothers Greg & Tim Hildebrandt submitting artwork for cards was a real treat!
Aside from them, and off the top of my head, I've always been partial to the works of Christopher Moeller, Jeff Miracola, rk Post, Tony DiTerlizzi, Paolo Parente, and of course Richard Kane Ferguson.
RIVER OF TEARS
I really fucking love this art, it's a shame I've never been able to find a high res version of it.
>>52580276
I'd disagree if not for how strangely inconsistent the designs of characters and set pieces has been post-Zendikar. I do think it's a good idea for Magic to have more consistent art direction, and would be willing to part with some of the more esoteric styling if they actually went from proper references and provided necessary feedback to make sure things looked consistent. We're given really terrible pieces like Deadlock Trap and character styling has gone all over the place. Almost any Gatewatch member has at least two radically different pieces.
>>52580439
it ain't all a shit sho tho
seb m singlehandedly putting magic art on his back these days
You plebs wouldn't know beauty if it bit you on the ass
>>52595252
yeah he's pretty good
>>52595252
Oh man I love Seb's work.
That being said, my mind is kind of blown that nobody has mentioned Volkan Baga yet. Dude is a true master.
>>52593846
My nigger. One day we'll get that cycle printed, considering it's basically just Landfall pre-keyword. Maybe we'll get full rez art then.
Avacyn is my waifu and ha;f the reason is because of her art alone.
>dat choker
>dose thigh-highs
>dat exposed thigh
>dat long, silver hair
>>52598604
This chick too. I might just have a thing for long, pale hair. I knew a chick in high school who had really long blonde hair. Maybe that's why.
I'd let this chick beguile the fuck out of my wills any day
>>52598707
Oh, are we posting MTG girls we want to put our dick in now? Okay.
>>52581785
>Hot dark-skinned women on my blue spells
Hell yes.
Wish they would reprint that Counterspell art to be in the new post-m15 template
I deeply adore the Vintage Masters art pieces, but my favorite has to be the updated Time Walk.
The imagery of the sun, moon, and stars being flung across the sky like meteors, while a figure (ostensibly the mage causing this) brandishes a sword (representing their own power) atop a mystic sundial, thus depicting the strength to completely dominate time (which captures the fact that it's on an utterly overpowered card) and thereby all things.
tl;dr "behold my godlike power", I love it.
>>52583661
Holy shit. I was about to say Tucker and add that I didn't think anyone would agree with me.
>>52579810
Seeing it in the context of the finished piece, this actually doesn't seem all that egregious to me, although that is very likely because I'm accustomed to Greg Land and that fiasco with the initial Exalted 3e backer pdf.
