Had a thread yesterday that was about GW stores being shit. Turned into positive stuff about them. so here's a thread for all the stuff we've done at GW stores.

Good thread, OP.
>>
Haven't entered one in years. Feels good, man.

Not been to one.

because there are none nearby. I really want to go to one tho. Hopefully get a job there because GW employees get a 50% discount. One day.

Likewise. Recently came back into the hobby and the second-hand market makes life much easier for expanding existing collections, and my LGS offers 20% off GW's RRP. I'm an Ausfag so it's still hideously expensive but it makes paints and random little things more reasonable.

when LoTR was super big, I went to a GW in a mall that wasn't my usual LGS. the guy who runs my home shop was always super nice and never pushed product, just game night and such. Hot damn the GW redshirt was a pushy bastard.

Two guys in the shop, which in hind site was a red flag, counter guy was cool, floor guy keep trying to talk to me about what I'm buying. I was looking at the isengaurd troll, and he was pushing easternlings for some reason. I was like 14 and he wanted me to buy that fuck huge full army box. everything I picked up to look at he was there trying to sell me on it. walking to the counter he stopped me and practically put a box in my hands.

Ultimately he pushed me over the the counter and I said "you know, I'll get a single box, but you really have to chill out dude. I play urk-hai man"

The counter guy giggled and the floor guy rolled his head and shoulders back like I said some that killed him. At the time I thought it was weird, but now I understand that those guys really have to fight for their jobs, the quotas are crazy. they have to sell new product.

Years latter, same GW, the guy was much nicer, he talked about list building and had a store copy of the codex for me to look at. then he talked color scheme, and had this big book of all sorts of pics. Walked out with quite a few boxes.

went back a few years latter, shop was gone, but they left the giant space marine statue in its place.

today the whole mall sold, and is now a target.

>Blackshirt comes up to me
>hey, looking for anything in particular
>I'm looking at getting into 40k, so I'm just having a look
>shows me the Start Collecting! Boxes, I like the look of the skitarii one.
>tell me it's their store birthday the next week, and there'll be events on
>tell them I'll think about it for as bit.
>go back the next week, buy the skitarii kit, and a tool kit to start, get a free Aquila pin

At some point I'll actually get to play a game, but for now I'm just enjoying assembling and painting my little martian cyborgs
>>
>>52549902
No you're doing it wrong, you can't enjoy yourself, why aren't you already bitter and twisted !!!

Nah I'm the same, rarely get games but I love getting armies upto the 1500pt level, because then any new units can't be just swapped and changed.

Literally the only thing wrong with most GW shops are the fucking customers. Normally I go during the week so it's pretty quiet, but the last time I went on a weekend, holy fuck.
>ancient grognard bitching about how 0.5th edition was better while I'm trying to play
>fedoron, king of euphoria sipping a open topped large m'dew over my shit like the corn syrup of damocles
>WAACfag guy with three empty riptide bases arguing they couldn't be shot over terrain
>hungry fat dude eating the world's greasiest garlic bread and making the entire store smell

I feel bad for the poor redshirt who has to deal with it all the time.
>>
>>52540296
Since I started painting again around 4 or 5 months ago I go to my local GW store every time I need something (paint, models, sometimes tools). The blueshirts (that's how they all are here) are friendly enough and always ask me what I'm doing, trying to push the latest sales (of course) when I talk about conversion projects. I only paint for fun and didn't seriously consider playing the game.
The guy at the counter always insists that I should bring some of the stuff I paint next time, and that they have free tables for people to come and paint at the store.

Last saturday I finally gave in and went there to paint, initially only for 2 hours, just to compare myself to the locals and see what I can learn from them. I ended up spending 6 hours there, met cool people, some of which probably lurk here too and learned some tips about painting skin and energy weapons from a blueshirt and a shop regular.

I'm going back next saturday, this was one of the best days I've had in a long time.

I keep reading that GW only has a single redshirt working in a Shop. Is it really that common? Been to two stores and they were always packed with several employees. I live in Germany if it matters
>>
>>52550674
I'm in France and there's never less than two of them at one time in a store unless it's getting real close to the end of the day.

Most of them don't close on the lunch break so there's one guy then.
>>
>>52550674
Some of the satellite stores in the states are single-man. Bigger ones tend to be a manager and 2-4 dudes.
>>
I went into my local GW for the first time today
>Owner and dude playing Bloodbowl
>Tell them it's all good, no need to stop
>Wander around, grab a few paints, watch their game
>Talk about painting up some kickstarters to get back into the swing of painting
>Explain I miss Mordheim
>He's a huge mordheim fan
>We chat about past games
>watch them finish up their bloodbowl game
>Tells me to come back with some models and have a mordheim paint session

Seems like a nice enough guy

GW seem to be past their worst.... They're not as pushy as they used to be... possibly because they no longer have to pay the wages of the large number of staffers they had in the 90's and 2000's.

Some of the staff are even happy to talk about old GW games and lead mountains.
>>
The last time I went into a Games Workshop (which are now rebranded as 'Warhammer')
There were 3 guys standing around and a neckbeard sat in the corner of the store, his body was very unnaturally bent out of shape, his spine was deformed in ths smeagle ring loving pose. He then sat upright and as if his back was a finger knuckle it snapped straight, it was quite a disturbing sight, and one I can never forget, plus he was painting the Ultramarines chapter master with very detailed heraldry. Still, the way his spine was so odd like that. Creepy...

>Anyway
I've only ever been in general game stores that also happen to sell GW. As a gamer who got caught up in MTG then moved into DnD towards miniatures and board games.

Honestly, in my city 2 places have closed down due to poor sales, which is sad. One obscure internet cafe for gamers with gaming PC's and the like and a load of tables. Which ran out of money and closed, then to a tiny shop that couldn't fit all it's players in and just decided to drop having a store to going on the market, which caused the place to fold in a week.
Onto a third venue now and it's an even smaller shop profile now.

Though the Warhammer store persists through all this.

>Space Hulk, Necromunda; specialist games we don't sell, anymore
>okay, I can work with this
>have a great talk about old games and new models
>tell him about our beginner activities as a way to get back into the hobby
>another customer needs to be rung up

This is the reason why you get the hard sell from redshirts.

GENERAL.jpg

>>52540296

Last time I went into a GW was with my high school bud. We went in, were greeted by the three redshirts. I bought an Empire general, my friend got an Ogre maneater and my brother got a warrior priest (this was like 2008 back when they still sold blister packs for like $12 at most).

We sat down, and chatted with the redshirts while gluing and painting. One of the redshirts was going on a rant saying that "White Lions are stubborn," every other minute and my friend stopped painting to turn and ask the guy "Hey dude, are white lions stubborn?" and the dude just lit up like "YEAH!!"

After we finished painting, we had a small game with em on one of the cool tables. I remember it being just a rolly hilly grassy table with some trees and there was another covered in big crystals carved from foam. Back when they had a huge hobby side to the hobby.

Pic related is the General I had modeled and painted that day. Never really went back to touch him up, because Idk, I like it. I'm fond of it. Was one of the better times I had visited a GW.

Every one had slowly just closed down after a while. One just opened up in West Hartford and I may visit it someday. It's actually set up in the exact location an ancient hobby shop was (read hobby shop, not FLGS), called War and Pieces in West Hartford.and I got my very first models there in 2001 or 2002.

Am rambling now kinda lol.
>>
>>52552171
>every time I go in he's running it by himself.
Sounds cool but stores not open on Mon/Tues and single man operated are common, every London gw is one dude and they all seem good.

Honestly in my 10 years I've only ever had one 'bad' experience with GW staff and it was just some rude Italian dickhead who worked at my old lgs when i was very new, but he wasn't like a grognard if anything he seemed like a normie who didn't belong with a shit attitude

>Back when they had a huge hobby side to the hobby.
I feel you on this one. I came back to the hobby and GW after a 8 to 10 years hiatus and even in that time I see the change in the tables they have in the stores. They used to all have custom made tables with a lot of personality, but now every GW I go to has the same stale and ugly tables they sell and the pieces of terrain from the kits they currently sell.

It's a bit sad, but there are exceptions to this rule. The GW next to work has a gigantic city themed table with a train and a crane all made from GW parts. It's still made from kit parts but there's at least some creativity involved.
>>

No fucking lie. I fucking hate when retail does this shit.

I used to bag at a grocery store. One night I had a six hour shift and was kinda tired at this point. A customer comes through, smiles at me

>"Hey how're you doing?"
>"Oh I'm good, tired. Just got off work."
"Yeah I'm alright. I'm jealous," I laugh, "I've got about a half hour left and I can go relax."
>Woman's face turns stone cold.

Like, fuck retail. The worst fucking industry. Forgive me for wanting to be a human and treat humans like humans.

I like the Visiarch so much i'd be tempted to get him and start a Dark eldar force for Kill teams

But i have to trawl ebay for them, and since they are all minor vanity projects I'll probably never bother. GW fucked up not making them all separate kits

My GW has a pretty neat rule for eating and drinking near the gaming area:
Roll a d6.
1: Nothing happens...you lucky bastard
2: One random model is rmoved from the battlefield as a casualty (determined through dice role, or by the shopkeepers choice, if your being an insufferabl fag)
3: The opponent chooses one of your units. They may reroll all to-hit rolls against that unit for the rst of the game.
4: The opponent chooses one unit. It is unable to take any actions until the start of the next turn.
5: You must assemble a model for the shop.
6: You must PAINT a model for the shop...make duncan proud.
>>

It most certainly was and, added bonus, the redshirt who posed as social anxiety guy got fast tracked into his own hobby center.

He was subsequently sacked for failing to make goal and his store was closed.

And that's not even my best secret shopper story; the best had to have been when the regional manager sent his fourteen year old daughter into the store, she spent the entire time on her phone, actively avoided any attempt to engage her, and finally walked out after calling us a bunch of nerds; but since we didn't sell her a starter set, hobby kit, primer and White Dwarf, it's a failed secret shop.

My store is really good. The manager of the GW from Bordeaux is an absolute bro all around, and I'm going tomorrow to help him paint the Shadow War terrains.

It's a small place, but him and the other, part-time, dude are stellar dudes, the clients are your average cringy, sometimes smelly dudes, a lot of them are perfectly normal, social people.

Great music as well, loads of events, I remember when I came in for the very first time, Sam told me about 4 different events, in one week, an absolute blast.

Holy fuck you nigger, I didn't ask for the feels from it being the Metreon GW you were referring to.

I remember not even knowing what 40k was the first and only time I ever went in there. I'd just gotten out of a movie or something, and I went inside because I saw you tanks on the store window. I remember walking in and being awesome by a display table in the center of the room showing what I didn't know at the time was an apocalypse level fight between Guard and Nids, with the nids having a bio-titan as their center-piece.

My parents wouldn't buy me anything and we left. Wasn't until 5 or 6 years later that I got into 40k. The store had long since been turned into a target, as you said, by then though.

I wish I'd been old enough to have gotten into 40k on it's relative hayday.

At some point a few minths ago I went to my shop to buy the mandatory WD, ended up talking to the guy here about the new GW, Rountree, the upcoming stuff, and everything that was going on.

We spent maybe an hour or two, just two fans having a chat and goddamn it felt good to actually enjoy having a nice conversation where you don't have to skim through tons of complaints and whining.

>>52557513

You gotta believe me when I say this but all staff are dictated to, to sell a product, you 'must approach them with a smile on you face'.

'You must ask how there day is'.

'You must try to push the sale'.

If you do not do these things or more you are desciplined, if you are desciplined you cannot work up the ladder. Catch 22. Sales teams things this shit works, I worked in retail for 9 odd years and I was always honest and candid with the customer, I had so many charges against me by management I was known throughout the store as having an 'attitude', they sacked me because I got Numonia then 9 years of work was counted for nothing. No joke FUCK RETAIL, and the scum who steal and makes all our lives harder!

Since the hobby is a triple threat (paint, collect, play) it is a great way to be introduced to others that also do the same for the same games. At a lgs you never know what is going to be played, Makes pick up games harder to get. Then while there may be tons of space at the store, its usually taken up by magic players. I honestly dont mind paying full price if it keeps away magic. My local gw has a great community, there are no horror stories about players or staff (except those about the previous manager and guys that quit playing before i started)

Man the manager here is the representative of all French managers, used to be regional manager, yet asked to go back into the fray. That alone tells a lot about how much of a gem he is. He'd never do something like that. He doesn't even try to push sales. He just wants the stores to be friendly and welcoming. litteraly the only time I saw him get interested in a bad way about another shop is when he heard thay some manager in Paris was a jackass.

I decided to get back into painting a couple of days ago and was debating on picking up some minis and paints at my local GW (I was in the area) yesterday but just could not get myself to go because I know I can get everything I want cheaper online from non-GW retailers. I'm usually not that jewy but when it comes to GW I don't spend any cent more than I have to.
>>
I usually go to the GW in Frisco, Texas. Texas Toy Soldier is of course the popular FLGS in the Dallas area, but it's farther away for me, so I don't go there much except on the rare occasion that I need to buy something other than Citadel paint, and it's not available on eBay.

In August 2016 I had just started 40k, and went to the Frisco GW for the first time. The old manager (Moses, who was well loved) had just left. Until they found a new manager there was an alternating schedule of two on-call guys filling in. During this time the gaming scene at the store was completely dead. I ended up getting to know the Friday-Saturday on-call guy really well, and went to the store just to talk with him.

Fast forward to the end of Nov. 2016 and they found a new manager, and the call guy is gone. I exchanged phone numbers with him, but haven't seen him since November because we've both been busy. Haven't gone to the GW near as much since he left.

The new manager is a nice guy, but he's much more of a manager than a conversationalist. He's done a lot to revive the gaming scene at the store, but I miss talking to the on-call guy.
>>
>>52558318

There are 2 GWs near me.

The first one I went to was fucking gross. The dude that was there had long greazy hair; long, uncut and dirty finger nails, and was just generally everything I hate about the hobby. 2/10 shop.

Luckily, a newer store just opened up a little closer to me and the guy who runs it is a total bro. He's also building a community at his shop so people can come in and game and have fun. My only real complaint is he always tries to up-sell me when I'm in there, but he is trying to run a business so I get it. 9/10 shop.

oh geez, the autism is a real problem. my LGS has a 'free' role-play night, with any sorta game you personally wanna run kinda deal. hugely popular, which is nice, but it really calls out some real weird cats. There is a secret high sign for more normal people, its called making causal conversation. Not trying to be a dick, but you know, try to look someone in the eye and smile as you walk by.

Now this is a odd one, there are a few weird girls that are super... flirty? but like terrible at it. you make a joke warhammer or whatever they are fucking doing there in the first place and they are like super into it and then walk away to another guy and jump on his back anime style.

It's really weird and makes me feel like a creep because god knows how old they are. your like oh Jesus Christ that was a teenager. don't worry though, you just have to use the secret Jim Halpert face move to the owner and he gets it that your not in it for THE BREEDING.

Guy was super friendly, I asked if it was a problem if I didn't bring in GW minis to pain and his response was along the lines of "you buy paints from me and I'll teach you to paint anything you want". A fair enough trade. Went in for the class with a bunch of The Others minis and then went back the next day. The guy is always really helpful, and tries to push paints, but never really models which I like. It's strongly made me consider getting back into 40k, desu.

I was a redshirt ten years ago and I still remember the old 10 Commandments of Customer Service:

1) Acknowledge all customers who enter the shop.

2) Be aware of customers and their behaviour

3) Show enthusiasm and be cheerful

4) Be attentive and listen carefully to customer needs

5) Promote the Hobby

6) Establish a rapport with the customer.

7) Display an in-depth knowledge of company products

8) Maintain a high standard of personal appearance and hygiene.

9) Ask questions which best obtain information concerning customer needs.

10) Show Courtesy

still waiting for the call back to action...
>>
>>52565931
Some of these gamer girls are more awkward than the dudes. The flirting can be cringy, especially when they play dumb. I got introduced to a girl at one of these events, she twirled her hair around her finger and said in the most ditsy cutesy voice "I'm a Halfling!" I forced a smile that probably looked more like a pained grimace and said "That's nice." like you would to a child. She dropped the act and ignored me for the rest of the night.

There's a little gem that runs around and organizes players who I admire from a distance, but the others I feel like I can smell when I look at them. It's like my mind prepares me for what they probably stink like before I get close to them, just so there's no surprises.
>>

Used to be a regular back in the day and overall the store was good. Wasn't the biggest store but there was usually a 6x4 to play on if you booked it.

I eventually got a job and stopped the hobby for a while, I've since got back to painting. I heard some stories from my friends about they manager at the time stopped people from using forge world models since they weren't sold in the store. He also got rid of the 6x4 and just had tutorial boards but I feel this was a move from higher up.

I've been in a few since then and I feel out of place, I may watch a game for a few minutes or look around but I can feel the looks the regulars their give me. Sales wise it's the usual sales pitch of getting asked what I want etc.. Since I know what I want I don't fall for tricks.
Often get given a card or invited to an event, I say I might pop in but never do.

Only one negative springs to mind when I was a kid and arsehole teen messing up a GW store that wasn't either my own fault or a misunderstanding.

One holiday we got a bunch of the regular slightly younger kids into playing Mordheim. They loved it, some even bought models specifically to play different warbands.

Problem was, the company was running a country wide campaign and every day they had to report back to HQ with game results.

As a half dozen kids were busy playing Mordheim the store's numbers were down and questions were asked.

And so Mordheim got restricted to 1 day a week, I believe this rule continued after the holiday ended and the 1 day was a day when younger kids weren't allowed in the games room.

No fault of the staff at all but fuck the company.

Not really proud of myself, was young, no money no work, and i wanted to play this game.
We had like a "thief code", to never sell what we took for "real money", it was really supposed to only allow us to play.

And you know, this allowed a lot of kid like me to play and have a wonderful summer campaign in the store so meh

Now I walk into my local GW and the manager does not even play the game.

He is a face to sell shit and that is it.

He closes at before 7 on Saturdays and is closed most of the week.

It is so sad to see how this company has ended up.

My store manager is a fucking faggot like that also.

He does not even play the game. He just sells and is a huge normie faggot.

One day I bought a DA Deathwing command and built that in store.
After I had nothing else to do I notice I had parts to a T-34 model tank I was building and decided to work on that.

He walked up to me and told me to stop building that because I did not get it from the store.

I was so upset I decided never to go back to that GW or give him my money ever again.

I go to a GW 30 minutes south every other weekend out of spite just because he was a huge faggot about it.

I've been to a few in France and in Spain and most of them were one guy or soon became one man store.

This sucks though. I work as a cover for a blackshirt friend from time to time, and some days having two people is almost mandatory, especially for demos...

>>
>>52572906
>Why are the balding heebs and barren cunts that run retail too stupid to realize this?
Because retail changed a lot in the last 10 years. 10 years ago, "customer is always right" and "push sales as much as possible" were actually good tactics to increase sales.

With the rise of online shopping, brick and mortar stores need to have some value added, the first value they can bring is a spot for the community to gather (and thus not being insufferable cunts pushing sales at every turn), and second the staff has to understand that sometimes the customer isn't right, and most of the time the customer barely knows what he is doing and is here because he needs advices.

Being a dumb salesbot doesn't cut it anymore when it comes to retail.

I can only speak from a French side but I suppose it's valid in all regular armies. Loads of them pick up the hobby to have something to do in foreign operations. It's that, or lifting, not much else to do other than wait around at base I suppose.

Last time I went to a Gamesday, which was admittedly more than a decade ago, there was massive table made like Space Hulk, handcrafted, with corridors, asteroid parts, vacuum and space parts, fantastic work, made by military engineers.
Their grunt counterparts were all dressed like Cadians, and apparently they were authorised to come here inly if they would give away fliers to enlist. It was kinda hilarious to see cosplayers give enlisting flyers to everyone, neckbeards included.

My first time in a Games Workshop store was in 2002 when the LA Battle Bunker was still a thing, like right before the Witch Hunters codex released. Not familiar at all with Games Workshop, but was directed their by a Wizards of the Coast store (back when those existed) employee as I had asked about learning to paint miniatures, since I wanted to start doing so for my RPG group at the time. I'm hardcore into Shadowrun, and since I had recently purchased a collection of pewter miniatures for it, I decided I'd give this GW place a look.

I get the same answer as >>52552485 did in regards to painting non-GW models in store. Bummed, but it makes sense. I tell them my plan regarding painting them for a roleplay group, the ask me which game, and I tell them it's for Shadowrun, and another employee starts talking to me about how he played Shadowrun with a group of his own before moving to California. We talk at length, but as I did not bring money with me since I thought I'd get to learn to paint my own miniatures, I thank them, and go on my way.

I eventually come back to get a painting lesson and purchase a single Space Marine Scout blister to learn to paint as it was the closest thing they had at the time to anything I would be using for Shadowrun, and they were always super cool and never pressured me to buy anything, but actively took an interest in my Shadowrun group.

After getting into painting hardcore, I eventually started purchasing armies and learning the games, but that was my own fault. Every employee I've met at that store (save one, whose name I can't recall) has been cool, and I've been friends with two of them outside of the store for years now.

Can comfirm from our GW store, GW has some of the worst marketing policies

For example, your are expected to always make more then you did last year or else you are considered to be doing bad.

Case in point if you make x for one year, your expected to make X+Y the next year, then the year after that X+Y+z ect ect

On top of that, GW does not understand how to establish customer basis and loyalty, guy at our shop told us they are told to push sales and games rather then let people hobby in the shop, failing to understand that if you create a place were people want to hang out, they end up spending more time and money there. Because if you allow your customers a place to build they get their models done, and if they like hanging out there they most likely will end up buying another model to work on while they hang.

Our GW owner is really chill always let people use his paints and keeps a hobby area. Only down side is the store is super small, like 2 standard tables and a 4x4 hobby area

>Go into GW in Austin Tx because I happened to randomly overhear someone talking about it while I was eating lunch several days prior
>Go in trying to decide between Harlequins and Admech
>Quiet day so after talking with the guy running the shop for a bit decided to just browse for a moment
>two guys come in and Blackshirt runs them through Sigmar demo while I look at boxes.
>Decide that I want to try Skitarii
>Blackshirt asks me why I made the decision I did just out of curiosity
>Tell him that Ive never played before and had no real disposition towards any army in particular to start with and those two stuck out to me
>explains to me that they are both complicated and difficult to play, citing examples of rules and situations that commonly occur to people playing the factions
>suggests that I get the Dark Vengeance box because it is the best bang for your buck as a person starting the hobby.
>Thought about it but just wasnt really feeling Dank Angles
>One of the guys demoing the Sigmar table bumps into the codex rack and knocks off a Necron codex.
>Be the nice guy I am and help Blackshirt pick up things that fell but held on to the Necron codex
>Made a decision then to play Necrons instead
>Bought start collecting Necrons, box of Immortals I made into Deathmarks, various paints and brushes, dice, tape measure Mouldline remover and clippers.
>Spent an inordinant amount of money
>Incredibly satisfied with my experience and go on saturday after morning college to spend the day playing with the other guys and having a good time.

Another story comes from last weekend at the Grand Opening of another store close to Austin. I will have to divide my time between both of them because its an hour there regardless of where I go...

>Grand Opening, brought my models expecting to play
>Tons of people there, cake, store manager guy and like 3 corporate trainer people
>Each and every one of them is a great person
>Spot Monolith box and think "What?? They dont ever sell these on location.
>Impulse buy monolith because unique and fun model
>use the sweet little painting station to do some work on my Triarch stalker
>little girl maybe 6 years old tells me it looks like a spider and asks how im not scared of it
>Tell her spiders have eight legs, and this one only has six so really its just a yucky bug
>she sits next to me and asks me all kinds of lore questions
>her dad is buying Sigmar stuff and tells her to leave me alone
>Say its chill and let her paint one of my unfinished warriors
>If she fucks up I can just respray it anyway
>It turns out really well, I was surprised, thank her for helping when she left
>Start putting monolith together and get about half way done before realizing something is wrong
>Front door and back side sprue are not in the box, instead its another sprue of the side panels.
>Tell corporate trainer people
>Get manager guy they were training to go through the process of helping me resolve the issue
>Get my info down and phone number
>calls the customer support right then and there and orders me the pieces I needed
>Corporate guy gets on line and tells them to throw in a second monolith on the house since it was such an odd fuckup
>Helps me stabilize what I had already glued on with a bunch of rubber bands so the edges stay while glue dries and I wait for the pieces to come in the mail
>Had already glued a third side so instead of prying it off, I nigger-rigged it to look somewhat neat with a base and some sections of the leftover sprue pic related
10/10 experience

Seeing so many positive stories makes me want to see if there's a good Games Workshop in Toronto but I'm worried I'll run into tons of weird SJW degenerates. Not trying to /pol/ here, I'm just worried people here might be extra spergy.

Is Toronto good for games stores/tabletop gaming in general?

i did'nt see one of those in a long time. nice one anon, or should i say two. they handled that mistake nicely

i don't have any bad experiences with gw personally, there was a store 30mins from here wich had a nice manager, she was totaly new to the hobby though, before she signed on to she never painted a singel miniature. but very good attitude and enthuesiasm for the hobby, maybe a bit on the gw sales training train but i'm imune to that. we talked painting technics old vs. new models, blood bowl and the hobby in general. the call in grl on the other hand was a total social awkward person, never got more then ten words out of her. never played there but go there at least once a month and always buy some paint or plastic crack, manager reserved limited edition models and goodies wich i could not get on the release date becuase of work. all was good. but GW hq decided the store wasn't making enough money so it closed this february, the manager was really sad because she liked her job, gave her my snotling bb zebra as reminder of good times

there's another store 40 mins away, nothing really wrong with it, the crowd is avarege if you can ignore the 'airbrush is everything, 50 shades of green on my desk, necron waacfag neckbeard' and some other creep wo always hangs arround and is somehow the call in guy. the manager is a decent enough guy with knowledge of the hobby and reasonable painting skills, but somehow i don't like the guy, way to smooth and he has something snakelike about him,. i don't really like that store i only visit it a few times a year it's next to a smartshop, so when i buy magic truffles i will pop in there to restock some paints

>the old 10 Commandments of Customer Service

ohmy, this takes me back to my outrider training when that was still a thing. i did'nt make it trough the program. i was to much fucused on the hobby and not enough on sales. aah my innocent naiv young me when i aplied to that job

GW at your and Lawrence is supposed to be good, never been there. Meeplemart is awesome! Literally every single miniature game you can think of l, even kromlech bits and stuff. Toronto has some pretty sure that you won't get any trouble
>>
>>52580616
Every GW that hosts regulars will have cunts in it. There will always be that little group of 4 dudes that sit facing the door so they can whisper about and snarl at everybody who walks in, will judge paint jobs harshly and bitch and moan when kids come into the shop and ask kid questions and say kid things because they never really grew up themselves.

As long as you avoid them, you will generally meet good people of various social skills, but sportsmanship is everything.

Went to a Games Workshop once.

I was on vacation, there's no GW nearby me. I play at a regular FLGS, but thought it'd be interesting to see.

I had a chat with the manager. Store was empty, I was first getting into Warhammer Fantasy. Gave me some advice about the game, showed me how to pin metal models.
I bought an Alarielle the Everqueen mini and the High Elf Heraldry book.

Always awesome exp at Las Vegas store. cant stress this enough

But in terms of GW...sometimes man they really screw their own people.
was super hyped for silver tower went to physical in SoCal and preordered the whole thang. then like a week later GW releases the extra characters as a kit and charged less. so i drive my outta da way to return the one in the box set and i had to tell the guy look i know its not you, its corporate. I just want my money back i dont want to preorder the same characters i'm returning. So i havent really been back since instead got characters from webs. If they had told the guy ahead of time he could have been a hero instead they just kinda let him deal with the flack.

Last time I set foot in a proper GW store was when I was twelve. They were doing a raffle to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of White Dwarf magazine, and I won a gold-plated, granite-based metal model of Grombrindal and two shield-bearers.

The scene in my local store has really depended on the manager. It's had 3 in the last 3 years.

>First Manager
>Tough as balls
>No swearing, no riff raff, no bullshit
>Still quite a nice guy
>Kind of muted atmostphere, but everyone still had a good time

>Second Manager
>Anything goes
>Everyone chatting shit about the old manager
>Racist jokes whenever a black guy leaves the store
>Fucking mountain dew and doritos everywhere
>Hardly went in during this period

Luckily the new guy isn't as much of a twat but some of these neckbeardy little runts are still there

Ah fair, we had a guy that turned up a couple of times, won the gold-plated one and we never really saw him again. Probably in a shoebox under his bed on a council estate or someting.

I spent plenty of Saturdays there for years, mostly played 3rd/4th ed 40k. Used to have like 3 full-time staff and about 5 part-timers, all sorts of events and Specialist Games stuff. There was a mob of about a dozen teenagers who were all regulars, whilst Thursday late night opening was reserved for the more mature ones and adults. They could squeeze about 3 6'x4's, 1 4'x4' and a painting table into the small store if they tried.

There was the odd pubescent scuffle and a couple of kids using it as an excuse to drop their bags off then spend the day elsewhere smoking, but mostly we were all dedicated hobbyists and it was really fun, though towards the end I was playing a 3.5ed Iron Warriors list with 9 Obliterators and in hindsight I should have been less of a cunt, played in a few national tournaments but then realised that I didnt wan't to be an arsehole anymore. Now I play genteel skirmish games like Song of Blades and Heroes and Heroquest.

I walk past occasionally and it's just dead when it's open, one manager sat at the painting table with maybe one or two people in, all on boring Citadel™ Realm of Battle® tables. There is a big club though and a really decent FLGS with three floors and all sorts of ranges. Feel bad for the younger kids, clubs are better environments but you don't get the casual access of walking into a high street shop.
>>
Man I would love to run a fucking hobby shop. Even with just one employee. Its just so fucking difficult though.
>>
>>52584818
>Citadel™ Realm of Battle® tables
This pains me so much every time I see one.

2 former Golden demon winners have opened a shop with 2 friends of them right next to my place, it's absolutely incredible.

However, it's one thing to be passionate about it, but you gotta know your shit.
>>
>>52584939
I'm pretty sure I could run a right hobby shop, the problem is getting customers in in a town with zero public transport and huge tracts of suburbia. Like how many randoms actually buy shit from hobby shops?
>>
>>52584935
Mine is a small ass shop, and the 40k sector imperialis floors have been used for the DV demo table, which is never used.

So we end up playing any and all games on the AoS table with 40k terrains. I'm actually going back there in half an hour to help paint some stuff for Shadow War.
>>
>>52584969
Well the shop I'm talking about is in the center of the city, close to public transports so there's that. Keeping niche retails open is probably harder in the US than in Europe.
>>
>>52566152
I think most stores I've been in still follow that.

>>52582525
>Every GW that hosts regulars will have cunts in it
Oh yeah. Back when I was learning, the jokes were about my painting. A lot, because I knew I couldn't do fine detail well, and thus didn't. Simple block paintjobs while I was still hashing out a scheme and a system of getting it done.
The jokes slowed after I bought a couple of squads and had them painted in a week. Literally the only difference was a bit of detail and a blue ink wash over the Ultramarines blue. Then they stopped after I ink-washed all my other models as well. Suddenly, shading.

One little memory that just came to mind. Like most GW's, we had a shop coach to Games Day.

In 2005 UK shops had to paint up at least half a company of a new chapter, Steel Confessors, or enemy Tyranids to contribute to the mega-battle. GW even produced a cobalt paint to help. At Hull we actually bothered to name every marine after a regular or staff. Being the apothecary in the command squad, I was one of the last to be wiped out on the day. They still had the squad in one of the cases until AoS/even bigger plastic kit 40k completely took over.
>>
>>52585112
What happened to the steel confessors? Never heard of them

Founded by the AdMech using Iron Hands geneseed in the 19th Founding. Inquisition/High Lords forced them into becoming independent and swearing fealty to the Emperor directly. Defended their homeworld, the Forge World of Kalevala, from Hive Fleet Leviathan, in the massive Games Day battle featuring their entire chapter.

GW depicted them as silvery steel in the Index Astartes art, but then painted them all cobalt, like I say they even sent the shops a specially made batch of paints.

Reminder that if this shit happens to you call head office and complain about it. I'm fairly tight with a lot of dudes in nottingham and they would go apeshit on his ass. I lot of the pushy staff memes are because of a huge push under kirby to up sales to a rediculous level while not giving a shit about customer repeat purchases. HR and CS have always been more interested in the person buying and they have a zero tolerance attitude to this kind of shit.

Just because you're a beta-cuck who can be bullied into buying minis you don't want doesn't mean the rest of us are.

I'd have told the manager to fuck off right there if he's going to try and lie to my face over plastic models
>>
Posted in the other thread but whatever. Run by single dude who's quite bro, from time to time you feel the sales push taking over but he's not pushy about it. Came back from more than ten years and I'm enjoying it quite a bit thanks to the store, I can't paint there as I use Vallejo and I'm not buying citacrap paints as my main hobby are scale models and have enough expensive shit related to that to now buy shittier versions of it. Shame as it would be a perfect place to chill after work before going home if i could bring my forbidden stuff. But I get that it's a business and yada yada.
The regulars are a bit weird but nothing too bad and when you get to talk a bit with them they are pretty entertaining hobby related, but they form circles and stutter when approached by others and hurry to talk with their friend again or fall in silence for a while. I'm not an extrovert but lads it ain't that hard not to keep a bit of small talk about a hobby (I can't talk about warhammer with my friends as they either left it for good or are normie scum, I just want someone to talk about it irl ;_;)

All I did was learn to do finer details and ink wash things.

The staff were fucking based, though. On seeing that I'd produced decent-looking models, I was then called on to help with a big game they were running the next week. My models were deemed worthy enough to be used alongside the store army.

I quit going to GW stores after a game day a while ago. I, and a few friends, came to the store with our armies, only to be told that we weren't allowed to play Warhammer Fantasy, despite everything being official GW material. I don't see how any decent store should be able to dictate what you are allowed to and not allowed to play, especially when sad games are bought from their store. I can kind of understand why Mordheim is so dead now.

>>52593306
>I don't see how any decent store should be able to dictate what you are allowed to and not allowed to play, especially when sad games are bought from their store
I doubt they said you couldn't play it, just not in their store.

If you mill about a gamestop playing games on your nintendo ds, they will similarly ask you to leave even if you bought the games there.

I love this, it's the perfect example of damned if you do damned if you don't. I'm not picking on you in particular but you can see how GW staff are given shit if they talk to people too much and now they are given shit if they talk too little??

To be honest half the stories of shit GW staff are real and the other half are people just being either being social awkward themselves, rude or just plain trying to find a problem.
>>
>>52593011

I've always wanted to get into 40k, it looks like a bit of fun. But the whole fandom and player base really puts me off. The few people ive come across that play the game are full blown autistic, over weight weight neck beards, the typical "for the emperor" type shit stereotype.
