Gurthang is just arbitrarily malicious as a function of being a sword forged of unearthly metal by a really hateful craftsman. The way magic works in the silmarillion means that it really just comes down to superlative physical craftsmanship that goes so far it gets wrapped up in fate and the metaphysics of the universe. For example, gold is tainted with evil because the devil spent a lot of time stealing and working it in past ages, and extremes of temperature can affect make constructs evil b/c the devil invented hot and cold. Eol, the one official "dark elf" aside from Maeglin forged the two black swords and a suit of black armor from a meteorite, at a time in middle earth when the earth was flat. In that context what he found wasn't a space rock, but a lump of matter not affiliated with a god/archangel, which he then turned into weapons by pouring in his malicious intent the same way Sauron did the ring. The weapons produced are not necessarily all that evil in the metaphysical cosmic sense, but they are hate filled specks of actualized sin, contrived in the absence of god's grace and fated to become the incidental facilitators of the enemy's will.
tl;dr
Gurthang isn't chatty about its evil plan, but its very nature has no redeeming features in the cosmic sense, and wherever it touches the course of fate the devil can actually play against god's providence. More subdued than Moorcock, but no less evil.

What I'm getting at is that while gurthang isn't as important in its setting, its not any less evil in quality. Stormbringer fucks the universe and kills and absorbs gods in a pulpy fantasy setting with good and evil deities and an evil, non-omnipotent prime mover. Gurthang is a unliving, malicious magical construct that has an unusual background that makes it interact with fate in weird ways, but its in a setting with an omnipotent, abrahamic prime mover, one that likes mucking about with true providence that Stormbringer can't touch. Their actual power levels are non-comparable, because stormbringer grants abilities and plots and gurthang just tumbles through fate ruining everything.

The tl;dr of it was that ol' Burnt Face really was the chosen of Asuryan all along, and that every other Phoenix King cheated to pass through the fire. They were all unworthy and were punished by going insane for doing it. Tyrion basically loses everything, says "fuck it" and draws the Widowmaker, gets whatever elves aren't cool with this whole "Malekith is the rightful king" bit, and jobs in the end anyway.

Here's a summary

So there are these "elves" called the Eldren who travel through the multiverse and inhabiting the various planes of existence alongside the Phoorn(dragons). At some stage, a massive cosmic shift occurs and they become separated.
One settlement kept the name and inhabited a post apocalyptic world that was home to the humans that summoned John Daker/Erekose. He leads the campaign against the Eldren but falls in love with their princess Ermizhad. Turns out they got a bucketload of weaponry that they won't use since they're not malicious at heart.
Erekose has a change of heart and decides to wipe out all of humanity and proceeds to do just that.

Another settlement called themselves the Vadhagh and were entirely pacifists. They got completely wiped out by the Mabden(humans) that were created by Arioch because he was bored with them. Corum is their last survivor(at least at the start of the series this is the case) and after seeing his people and familiy butchered and gets mutilated, wants to take revenge on the ones responsible for the annihilation of his race.

Now Melniboneans are a bit different.
They're part of the same race as the above but after various circumstances involving Arioch and the twin swords, decide to make various pacts with the Lords of Chaos and become a society of sociopaths. They also made pacts with the Phoorn, essentially making them blood brothers.
And this is the most peculiar thing. Turns out that Melniboneans AND their dragons have a chance of giving birth to either offspring.
Elric's aunt, Fenrath is one of these and has the even rarer ability to turn into a dragon herself.
