There are a couple of references to "James the brother of Jesus." Historical sources hint that he was the one to take over the main church in jerusalem after Jesus' death. Here's my take.

Girl=a dumb autist. I feel bad for her, but its her job to get her life in order, and I can't help. Her family are all a bit autistic, judging by their extreme social mistakes.

She should not have cheated, but honestly that doesn't fucking matter. It happens, when you do that you should break up or give them a second chance. Don't fuck them over.

She fucked up on two counts: 1, don't let your mistakes give people power over you. He clearly took advantage of her guilt. 2, she gave a fuck about him calling the cops after he screwed her over. This was her chance to kick the shit out of him, and she missed it. Who cares if you go to jail for assault? Its like 5 years. When someone does shit this bad to you, you fucking hit them. Or (speaking from personal experience here) you don't hit them, because YOU choose not to. Not because you fear the consequences, but because you don't want to be the kind of person who hurts other people for personal vindication.

Her boyfriend does sound like a psycho. Yes, she could be a total cunt (its impossible to know for sure), but he's worse. I have dealt with these charismatic, successful people before. They tend to be sure of themselves, get their way most of the time, and be extremely intense about things. You may admire them, and feel as though they are a role model.

Unfortunately, success doesn't mean someone isn't evil.

My advice when dealing with this kind of person:

there's the russian method: stand up for yourself and damn the consequences. Hit them in the face with a rock, burn their house, slash their tires. I don't do this myself, because I'm not a particularly violent person, but I'd totally reccomend you do it IF you're willing to go to jail. Jail sucks, I hear.

second is the ghost method. That's what I generally use. Its a classic autistic defense mechanism, and it works pretty well. You simply leave. Leave immediately. Leave them in your past.

creatures in dorf fortress effectively have two states when it comes to their stance, 'standing' and 'on ground' - for creatures with legs, this makes a lot of sense because that represents either being in a position where they are at full height, block their tile, and don't take any penalties to combat or speed, or a position where they are at a low height, can be stepped over or crawl under other creatures, and take penalties to combat and speed but get bonuses to stealth, etc

all creatures can enter these two states, all of them. even if they don't have legs or, if i recall correctly, are currently flying or climbing.
it's easiest to experience weirdness with these states by modding the game and playing an adventurer as one of these creatures - birds and fish, largely. but sometimes aquatic creatures get knocked over or manage to lie down, and have to 'stand up' again.
if i recall correctly, being stunned or mortally wounded will put you into the 'on ground' state.

so in the end, unfortunately, it doesn't mean that the carp has figured out how to use its tail to stand tall and isn't about to deliver a severe ass-beating to everything in the vicinity, it's just been knocked over somehow and the code for generating the message when changing posture doesn't make any distinction between creatures with legs and those without.
it's more akin to 'the carp rights itself'

I've heard a few stories of SS soldiers who joined up for the career benefits and had no strong political opinion. Someone like that posted to auschwitz might realize he was in over his head and be nice with the prisoners when he could get away with it, just to retain his own sanity.

Oskar Schindler was the same, in a way. He was a Nazi for the career benefits and wound up saving so many people because, to paraphrase him, he found it impossible to think of them as anything but human, and humans in that situation need help.

The prisoner would likely latch onto the one guard that treated her as remotely human, and it went from there.

At least that's what comes to mind for me.

The Holocaust gets a lot harder to prices when your think about it from a ground- level perspective. Your average SS soldier wasn't some cackling cartoonishly evil caricature of humanity who delighted in every minute of the cruelty he was amped to inflict on those countless innocents victimized by the regime. Such people EXISTED - that is 100% true - but that's not all of it.

There was also the naive, ordinary German, duped by his leaders into thinking this was genuinely the right thing to do, that the minorities of Europe were part of a vast conspiracy dedicated to undermining and con trolling the civilized world and it was in the best interest of the German citizen to wipe them out.

There was the career soldier, who had already seen his country live through the humiliation of losing one war and would sooner die than see that happen again, no matter what. Or at least that's what he thought.

And there were the SS who weren't even German. The SS would recruit czechs, Poles, and other nationalities who had reason, personal or otherwise, to go along with their plans.

It doesn't take a monster to do monstrous things.

The danger for Carp was that they were improperly coded such that they gained XP from Swimming.

All creatures gained XP from doing pretty much everything, and the AI would spend those resources to bolster generic stuff in non-sentient creatures like birds and fish. Aquatic creatures had flags that essentially said "don't gain XP from Swimming" and "Don't make Swim checks." Carp were missing the first one - so they gained XP constantly just from being in the water, and consequently their stats were all through the roof by the time your fisherdorf came upon them. Carp were also pretty aggressive, so when Urist McFishmonger steps adjacent to a carp, it unloads with max-Legendary Wrestling and tears him in half.

Best part was that they almost invariably one-shot your civilians, so you'd get a message and it'd just show an explosion of gibs and blood. And a carp.
